1999: In 1999, after a long, 11 year separation, Bruce Springsteen, decided, to paraphrase the immortal words of John Belushi in The Blue Brothers, to put the band back together. The Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band reunion tour launched in April 1999 and stretched until July 2000. On highpoint of the tour was a record sold-out, 15-show run at Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey. Another was a 10-night, sold-out engagement at New York City's Madison Square Garden. At key points in each show, usually during Tenth Avenue Freezeout and his newest song, Land of Hope and Dreams, Springsteen played the role of preacher, calling on his disciples in the crowd to feel the healing power of the Ministry of Rock and Roll. Another special moment each night occurred during If I Should Fall Behind, a song written while Springsteen was away from the E Street band. With the band reunited, the song became a vow of togetherness, with Springsteen, wife Patti Scialfa, Steve Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, and The Big Man, Clarence Clemons each singing a verse, promising to wait for each other. It was clear that the Boss was glad to be back with his old comrades. This IEM recording captures Bruce & the E-Streeters during the early stages of their reunion tour, on September 13, 1999, 27 years ago today, in Philadelphia.

Performing GD 1990-09-10 - Philadelphia, PA

1999 - We've brought you various shows from John Kadlecik over the last few years, but today we finally give you one from the band where he got his start, Dark Star Orchestra (DSO).  The tale behind DSO goes as follows: "After thumbing through the 1990 edition of DeadBase, John Kadlecik hit on the idea of performing complete Grateful Dead shows. Not everyone with whom he shared the concept had a positive reaction but, he says, "I was able to talk the band I was in at the time, Hairball Willie, into playing an entire second set as a contest. I can't remember the exact show now, although it had to be either 4-25-77 or 5-25-77. Nobody guessed correctly, but a few got the year right and the closest guess received some band merchandise. But that was pretty much it for a while.  In 1997 as John was looking to form a new band, a mutual friend suggested Scott Larned. "I had heard great things about Scott back when he was playing with the Junction. So I called him, and when he said 'I've got this idea about covering entire shows out of DeadBase,' I knew something was going to happen. John also called up  Kevin Rosen to play bass and local singer Lisa Mackey to play the part of Donna Godchaux. The band name came in a brainstorm session that discarded other likely candidates (such as "Terrapin Nation".) Through friend and club owner Ray Quinn they secured four Tuesday night gigs at Martyrs' in Chicago.  The first Tuesday (Nov. 11, 1997) saw only 78 people, the next week doubled that, the third exponentially doubled that and by the fourth week they had sold out. Obviously there was a demand for this. They signed on for four more weeks. By year's end they became the regular Tuesday night houseband routinely selling out the room."  Kadlecik got so good at playing the role of Jerry Garcia that in 2009 he was invited by original Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh to join Furthur.  In any event, this soundboard recording captures DSO on September 10, 1999, 27 years ago today.  As was custom at the time, they recreated a Dead show in its entirety, in this case a show from Philadelpia exactly 9 years prior to the day!

I've seen Robert Cray in concert twice, both times in 1987. The first time, in April, he led-in for Eric Clapton at Madison Square Garden. Then I saw Cray again in August 1987 at Pier 84 in New York. He was the headline act with John Hiatt as his lead in. It was a fitting pairing since just as Hiatt had his commercial breakthrough that year, so did Cray. His album Strong Persuader, released in late 1986, climbed into the top 15 on the Billboard charts in 1987. This FM broadcast captures Cray in West Virginia on August 23, 1999, 27 years ago today.

On July 7, 1981, I saw Carlos Santana in concert for the first time. I was about a month removed from college graduation, and enjoying a summer off before starting business school in the fall. My buddies and I were going to see Carlos at a new outdoor concert venue that John Scher had opened, the South Mountain Muisc Fair in West Orange NJ. When we arrived, we found out that it wasn’t quite a venue at all. Nor was it an Amphitheater or Hall or an Arts Center or anything quite so fancy. It was…. THE SIDE OF A HILL. Yep, , Mr. Scher, who, as mentioned in my prior post, above all knew how to make a buck, rented space in a large park, put a stage at the bottom of a hill, put up fences to keep out anyone without a ticket, and created a concert venue. I guess it’s a little late for me to complain, especially since I bought to tickets to several other shows at South Mountain that summer. All issues with the venue were forgotten once Carlos hit the stage. He played a blistering set, featuring songs from his latest album Zebop, as well as a host of classics. We had gone hoping that Carlos would play Open Invitation, and he delivered. For the full story behind why that song was so important to us, you'll have to read my book. By the way, I would get to see Carlos again in 1986 as part of the Crack Down concerts at Madison Square Garden, which alos had CSN and the Allman Brothers on the bill!

This soundboard recording captures Carlos long after I saw him, in Sacramento on August 18, 1999, 27 years ago today. Carlos was on tour in support of the album Supernatural, which would re-ignite his career. The disc would reach No. 1 in eleven countries, including the US where it topped the Billboard charts for 12 weeks and certified 15 times platinum. The first single from the album, Smooth, featuring Matchbox Twenty singer Rob Thomas, would also go to #1 on the Billboard charts, spending a dozen weeks at the top.

Sheryl 1999 - Back To Back - #1: The summer of 1999 was a busy time for Sheryl Crow, to say the least. She was on the road as part of the Lilith Fair, an all female tour organized by Sarah McLachlan, which also featured such artists as The Pretenders, Indigo Girls, Liz Phair, Suzanne Vega, and Dixie Chicks, just to name a few.  She was also promoting her 1998 critically acclaimed album, The Globe Sessions, which went to #5 on the Billboard charts and won 2 Grammy Awards. Sheryl used a night off from the Lilith Fair to record an episode of Sessions At West 54th Street on July 29, 1999, 27 years ago today, as captured in this TV soundboard recording. Sheryl used the episode to feature both her album and the tour, playing a set very similar to what she was doing on satge at the Lilith Fair.  Downalod this one, them come back tomorrow for part 2 of thsi Back To Back set.

I saw Bruce Cockburn as the lead in band for Bob Weir in the summer of 1992. Cockburn also joined Weir during the encore of The Weight. The show was part of the Meadowlands Summer Fest series of concerts, which believe it or not, took place in the PARKING LOT of Giants stadium. The ever resourceful John Scher, a promoter who never let anything stand in the way of making a buck, through up a stage and some retractable stands in the lot, put a fence around it, and lo and behold, created a concert venue! You can read more about Mr. Scher and other crazy venues used for concerts in my book, TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT.

In any event, this FM broadcast captures Cockburn about 7 years after I saw him in concert, in Syracuse on June 4, 1999, 27 years ago today.

Shery Crow was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of fame in 2023, alongside Willie Nelson, Rage Against The Machine, Missy Elliot, and Bernie Taupin, just to name a few other members of that class.  Sheryl Crow was all over the ceremony, playing 3 of her tunes, with guest appearances by Olivia Rodrigo, Stevie Nicks and Peter Frampton, joining Willie Nelson for Crazy, and taking a verse of The Weight during the tribute to Robbie Robertson.

This soundboard recording goes back to April 21, 1999, 27 years ago today to captures Sheryl in Madison on tour in support of her 3rd album, The Globe Sessions, which had been released in September 1998. The critically acclaimed disc climbed to #5 on the charts and won 2 Grammy Awards.

The Rolling Stones were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1989, a class that also featured the star power of the Stevie Wonder, the late great Otis Redding, The Temptations and Dion. They perfomed Satisfaction with some help from Bruce Springsteen and Honky Tonk Women with an assist from Tina Turner.

This soundboard recording captures the Stones in San Jose on April 20, 1999, 27 years ago today on tour in support of the albums, Bridges To Babylon and No Security. Bridges To Babylon, which had been released on September 29, 1997 was the band's last studio album of the 20th century. While the disc met with mixed reviews, it still climbed to #3 of the Billboard charts in the US and certified platinum by November. The Stones launched a year long world wide tour in support of the album, announcing their plans at a press conference underneath the Brooklyn Bridge! The Bridges to Babylon Tour would become the largest Rolling Stones tour to date, exceeding the sales of their record-breaking 1994-1995 Voodoo Lounge Tour. Estimates are that over 4.5 million people attended the 108 shows played during the tour. Along the way, the Stones visited 25 countries on 4 continents. The band followed that up in 1999 with the No Security tour, in support of the album of the same name, a live disc featuring songs from the Bridges to Babylon run. The No Security tour launched on January 26, 1999 and would feature 43 shows, all is arenas seating 20,000 or less.

This excellent audience recording captures Neil 4 years after that 2nd induction, in New York on April 219, 1999, 27 years ago today.  I saw Neil 3 nights later at the same venue - a superb solo acoustic show!

I've seen the Pretenders live 3 times - early on in their career in October 1981 at the Palladium, in April 1987 at Radio City Music Hall after the commercial success of the albums Learning To Crawl & Get Close, and then just a few years ago, in April 2018, at the Morristown PAC. That gap of 31 years between 1987 and 2018 is the 4th longest I ever went between seeing a concert by the same band. (FYI - the 3 longest gaps were: 40 years betweem seeing Pat Benatar 1981 and 2021, 38 years between my first America concert in 1978 and the 2nd one in 2016, and 34 years between seeing John Hiatt in 1987 and then in 2021). If you like keeping track of statitsics releated to the concerts you attened, similar to what I've just discussed, my book has a whole section filled with charts I'm sure you'll enjoy!

I've only seen Sheryl Crow once, on July 28, 2019 at the Rooftop at Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport in New York. The good news - our Chase Card got us early admission so we found a spot right in front of Sheryl's microphone (it was standing room only!), not more than 5 feet from her! The bad news - it was the last concert I attended before the pandemic hit and kept us away from live music for over 2 years. That's what led to finally writing my book - since I couldn't attend live shows, figured I might as well write about them!

This TV soundboard recording captures Sheryl on the Sessions At West 54th program on December 10, 1999, 26 years ago today.  Shewas promoting her album, The Globe Sessions, which would go to #5 on the Billboard charts and win 2 Grammy Awards.

1990s - #6: In 1999, after a long, 11 year separation, Bruce Springsteen, decided, to paraphrase the immortal words of John Belushi in The Blue Brothers, to put the band back together. This IEM Audience matrix recording captures Bruce & E-Streeters during the early stages of their reunion tour, on November 18, 1999, 26 years ago today, in Minneapolis.

Everything about Woodstock 1999 was wrong. Perhaps it should have been a sign of trouble when the event was in July not August, at a site 200 miles away from the original Woodstock, without a single performer from 1969 among the scheduled acts. Instead of 3 days of peace, love and music, the effort to honor the 30th anniversary of the most famous rock festival of them all turned into a horrifying mixture of corporate greed, poor environmental conditions and terrifying violence. Whereas the original Woodstock was famous for the announcement that the the concert had become a free event, the 1999 version featured $150 ticket prices. Personal pizzas were priced at $12 and bottles of water cost $5. The venue lacked sufficient toilets and water, and the grounds became a muddy mess mixed with human waste when fans broke open several pipelines. Violence broke out on the 2nd night during the Limp Bizkit set, and fires erupted on the final night during the Red Hot Chili Peppers performance. Looking to fuel the fires, members of the crowd tore panels of plywood off the perimeter fence. More violence erupted, as many in the crowd broke into ATMs, merchandise trailers, and vendor booths, stealing what they could and setting fire to what remained. Conditions were so bad that MTV pulled out the crew they had covering the event. The National Guard had to be called in and the concert was brought to an end. One of the few positive moments from the show occurred on the opening Friday, July 23, 1999, 14 years ago today, when Sheryl Crow performed, as captured in this FM broadcast. Her set received excellent reviews from the crowd and critics alike.
