Jefferson Starship - 1984-06-30 - Costa Mesa, CA (FM)

In late 1966, the Jefferson Airplane recruited Grace Slick, and the rest, as they say, was history. Over the course of the next 6 months, the Airplane took center stage as one of the leading bands of the new psychedelic rock movement that emerged from San Francisco. Their breakthrough album, Surrealistic Pillow, produced by the Dead's Jerry Garcia, and released in February 1967, spawned two huge hits, Somebody To Love and White Rabbit. The Airplane played at the Human Be-In in January and then at the Monterrey Pop Festival in June, helping inaugurate the Summer of Love, in which thousands of young people converged on the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco.  The Airplance remained a leading voice of the counter culture  for the rest of the 1960s, but in the mid 1970s morphed into the Jefferson Starship, For a while hey made great music with tunes such as Ride The Tiger and Miracles, but then came We Built This City, and well, the less said about that the better. This FM broacast features Jefferson Starship, with Grace Slick on vocals, 17 years after the Summer of Love, and 38 years ago today, in Costa Mesa on June 30, 1984.

1982: I try not to post anything from Jeffeson Starship after 1979 as I'm no fan of the direction the band took in the 1980s, especially since they released a tune that many feel is the worst rock song of all time, We Built This City On Rock and Roll (go here for more on that!). But I'll make an exception with this soundboard recording from May 28, 1982, 4 decades ago today. First, the concert features original Jefferson Airplane members Grace Slick & Paul Kantner. Second, the show was a benefit for Viet Nam Veterans. Third, and finally, the bill also featured Country Joe and the Garateful Dead, making this a 1960 reunion of bands who firmly opposed the war in Viet Nam.

When the Jefferson Airplane dissolved in 1973, its successor almost immediately rose from the ashes. Jefferson Starship, led by former Airplane members Grace Slick and Paul Kantner, released the album Dragonfly in September 1974, featuring the single, Ride The Tiger. The disc would climb to #11 on the Billboard charts. By 1975, Marty Balin, another Airplane refugee, would join the Starship full time. In June 1975, the Starship would release the album Red Octopus, which would become the best selling album that any configuration of Jefferson Airplane/Starship would release. The album hit #1 on the Billboard charts, and the single, Miracles, went to #3. This excellent audience recording captures the Starship in its earliest days, featuring material from Paul Kanter's disc Blows Against The Empire, at the Capitol Theare in Passaic on April 6, 1974, 46 years ago today. Th eband does reach back ito its Airplance days, however, for an encore of Volunteers!

SNACK Benefit Concert - 1975-03-23 - San Francisco, CA (FM)

In 1975, legendary promoter Bill Graham, known for his shows at venues such as Winterland and The Fillmores, undertook his first large-scale outdoor stadium concert. On March 23, 1975, 45 years ago today, he presented the SNACK Benefit Concert at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. SNACK was an an acronym for Students Need Athletics, Culture and Kicks. At the time, budget cuts had almost completely wiped out all after-school activities in San Francisco’s public school system. Graham went to bat for the kids, and recruited a host of rock legends to help him. Billed as Jerry Garcia and Friends, The Grateful Dead opened the show, one of only 4 concerts they played that year. Tower Of Power, Santana, The Doobie Brothers, Jefferson Starship and Joan Baez also were also on the bill. The show closed with a set from Neil Young and Bob Dylan, backed by members of the Band. Not sure if Neil was sitting in with Bob and The Band, or the other way around, but either way, this FM broadcast of the show is a must have for your collection.

This soundboard recording of Jefferson Starship from San Francisco on January 9, 1995, 25 years ago today, is an interesting show, to say the least.  Normally, I avoid posts of the Starship in their later days to avoid the "We Built This City on Rock & Roll" era.  Thi set, however, features original Airplane members Paul Kantner, Marty Balin, and Jack Casady as well as a guest appearance by Todd Rundgren on Midnight Hour.  All that made it one worth posting!

In May 1975, the Jefferson Starship played a free concert in Central Park before 100,000 fans, a show that we you can find here. Well, seems that the Starship had so much fun with that gig that they decided to do it again the next year! Just 3 days after the bi-centennial, on July 7, 1976, 43 years ago today, Jefferson Starship returned to the Sheep Meadow for another free event, this one hosted by WNEW-FM. Torrential rains plagued the show, but the weather didn’t seem to bother the crowd of 75,000. Jefferson Starship debuted several songs from their latest album, Spitfire, which had been released in June, including Cruisin', Big City, With Your Love, St. Charles and Hot Water. The album would eventually spend 6 weeks at #3 on the Billboard charts. Download this FM Broadcast to hear Jefferson Starship during what would be their last tour for almost 2 years (and their last before the band would dissolve into the eventual mess that produced the infamous We Built This City).

In June 1976, Jefferson Starship released their 3rd album Spitfire, the follow up disc to their chart toping 1975 album Red octopus. Spitfire would eventually spend 6 weeks at #3 on the Billboard charts, but would not produce a hit single comparable to Miracles from Red Octopus. This FM broadcast captures the band on tour in support of Spitfire in Hartford on July 14, 1976, 42 years ago today.

The Jefferson Starship itself is a legacy of the 1960s. The band emerged from the ashes of the Jefferson Airplane, who released their debut album, Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, in August 1966. Of course, it would be their next disc Surrealistic Pillow, released in the Summer Of Love in 1967 with Grace Slick on board, that would skyrocket the band to stardom. As mentioned earlier, when the Airplane dissolved in 1973,   its successor almost immediately rose from the ashes. Jefferson Starhsip, led by former Airplane members Grace Slick and Paul Kanter, released the album Dragonfly in 1974, featuring the single, Ride The Tiger.  By 1975, Marty Balin, another Airplane refugee, had joined the Starship.  In June 1975, the Starship would release the album Red Octopus, which would become the best selling album that any configuration of Jefferson Airplane/Starship would release.  The album hit number 1 on the Billboard charts, and the single, Miracles, went to number 3.  Just a few weeks before the album's release, the Starship played in front over over 100,000 fans on the Sheep Meadow in Central Park.  During the show, the police continually harassed the band to ask the fans to get out of the trees!  This tape of the WNEW-FM broadcast captures that historic show from May 12, 1975, 39 years ago today, in its entirety.  The band plays several songs from soon to be released Red Octupus, but ironically, Miracles isn't included in the set list.  They do play several Airplane tunes, however, to close the show.  Download this one to catch the Starship when they still were a major force in the music world, long before the horror of We Built This City On Rock and Roll.
