Tommy James  & The Shondels - 2018-07-28 - North Tonawanda, NY (Ex Aud)

I've seen Toomy James live once, on January 27, 2018 at the MPAC in Morristown NJ. They delivered all the big hits from Dragging The Line to Crimson & Clover to Hanky Panky to Crystal Blue Persuasion. They even played my favorite tune, I Think We’re Alone Now - twice! First, an acoustic version, which Tommy explained was recorded for a crucial scene in a movie being made of his life. Later in the show, the broke out, the electric version we all remember from the radio. They encored with Mony Mony and Sweet Cherry Wine, during which Tommy took selfies with the crowd!

This excellent audience recording captures the band just 6 months later, in North Tonawanda, playing a very similar show. on July 28, 2018, 4 years ago today.

Tommy James - 1992-06-14 - Pittsburgh, PA (FM)

As mentioned in  some earlier posts this month, while the 1967 album charts reflected the psychedelic sounds of  disc such as Sgt Peppers, Surrealistic Pillow and Are You Experienced?, the singles charts continued to be dominated by pop music. That year, Tommy James and the Shondels, had 5 top 40 singles, including I Think We're Alone Now, which climbed all the way to #4 as the Summer of Love dawned. Many critics believe that Tommy James was a major influence on the genre know as Bubblegum Rock, with the tone and tenor of songs such as I Think We're Alone Now and Hanky Panky setting the stage for bubblegum hits such as Dizzy, Yummy Yummy Yummy and Sugar Sugar. This FM broadcast captures Tommy James, a quarter century after the Summer Of Love, in Pittsburgh on June 14, 1992, 30 years ago today.

Tommy James & Shondells - 2015-04-25 - Morristown NJ (Ex-Vg Aud)

On January 27, 2018, my wife and I ventured to the MPAC in Morristown NJ for a night of 1960s pop featuring Tommy James & The Shondells.- They delivered all the big hits from Dragging The Line to Crimson & Clover to Hanky Panky to Crystal Blue Persuasion.  They even played my favorite tune, I Think We’re Alone Now, - twice! This sometimes excellent, sometimes very good audience recording captures the band 3 years earlier at the same venue, on April 25, 2015, 6 years ago today, playing a very similar show.

Happy Together Tour - 1985-07-16 - New York, NY (FM)

While critical attention in 1967 was focused on the psychedelic sounds of albums such as Sgt Pepper's and Surrealistic Pillow, the singles chart was still filled with breezy pop tunes and one hit wonders. Songs such as Windy by The Association, Incense & Peppermints by the Strawberry Alarm Clock, to Sir With Love by Lulu and Ode to Billy Joe all went to #1 on the Billboard charts in 1967. The Turtles has their only #1 hit as well that year, when Happy Together reached the top spot, knocking out Penny Lane in the process! The Turtles broke up in 1970, though the band co leaders,Howard Kaylan and Mark Volma, found a 2nd career as a musical comedy act known as Flo & Eddie. In 1985, the duo put The Turtles back together to headline an oldies tour, appropriately named The Happy Together Tour, after their best known tune! Also on the bill were Tommy James & The Shondells, The Buckinghams, Gary Lewis & The Playboys, and The Grassroots. This FM broadcast captures the Happy Together Tour on the Pier in New York, on July 16, 1985, 34 years ago today.
