Bruce Springsteen - 2002-08-12 - New York, NY (IEM Matrix)

Bruce Springsteen had really no connections to Jerry Garcia or the Grateful Dead. As he admits in his autobiography, he went to one show and didn't get it at the time. Only years later did he come to appreciate Garcia's playing style and what the Dead were all about. Bruce's right hand man, however, the one and only Big Man on the saxophone, Clarence Clemons, was well connected to Jerry and the Dead. Clemons sat in with the Grateful Dead for at least 5 shows in 1988 and 1989. As such, he joined a select list of horn players to sit in with the Dead, which included such legends as Branford Marsalis and David Murray. In addition, Clarence played 7 concerts with the Jerry Garcia Band in the fall of 1989. Those shows that were so good that 5 of them have now been officially released - September 1, 2, 5, 6 and 16.  Blair Jackson documents all of Clarence's appearances with the Dead and Jerry in this article. By the way, at one point, Garcia and Weir actually considered inviting Clarence to join the Grateful Dead as a full time member. According to Weir, it was in the early 1990s, right after Springsteen broke up the E-Street band (temporarily, it turned out). It might have worked according to Weir, except that a couple members of the Dead “hated saxophones”. Go here to read more about how close Clarence came to being a Dead Head!

1988 - In 1987, the Grateful Dead rode a new wave of popularity, spurred by the success of the In The Dark album in 1987 and the Touch Of Gray video, which thanks to extensive airplay on MTv brought the band a whole new generation of fans. As a result, in 1988, the band did something that no artist previously had done, namely sell out 9 nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden. I went to the first 8 of those September shows, only missing the September 24 Rain Forest benefit in order to attend a good friend’s 30th birthday bash. The band was not yet playing at the level that would mark the next 3 years, but if you listened closely, you could hear it coming, The fall/wintwr 1988 shows all hint at the classics concerts that would emerge in 1989, 1990 and 1991. which we’ve discussed numerous times on this blog. This FM broadcast cpatures the Dead on their home turf in Oakland, closing out the year with some help from Clarence Clemons, on December 31, 1988, 34 years ago today.

Concerts For The Clinton Inauguration - 1993-01-17 - Washington DC (SBD)

He was dubbed the Rock & Roll President, which later became the title of a 1997 MTV documentary about his life.  He played saxophone on the Arsenio Hall show during his campaign for the Oval Office. He used Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop (Thinking About Tomorrow)" as his campaign theme song. Bill Clinton, the first baby boomer president, once thought of becoming a musician before life led him in a vastly different direction.  So, its hardly surprising that his inauguration on January 7, 1993, 27 years ago, today featured a veritable who's who of rock legends. This soundboard recording captures shows on the National Mall and at The National Building Museum celebrating the start of the Clinton presidency, featuring Bob Weir, The Band, Clarence Clmeons Stephen Still, Bob Dylan and a host of other rock legends.

In Concert Against Aids Benefit 1989 Daily Double - #2: After siting in with Forgery, Garcia and Weir rejoined their Grateful Dead band mates to rock Oakland for 2 sets of fun. Clarence Clemons sat in with the Dead for almost the entire show, starting with Iko Iko in the middle of the first set right through the encore of Brokedown Palace. That was one of almost a dozen appearances Clarence would make with either the Dead or the Jerry Garcia Band in 1989, as documented in this article by Blair Jackson.

In Concert Against Aids Benefit 1989 Daily Double - #1:  As I mentioned in earlier posts, I've somehow missed out on seeing John Fogerty in concert, a big gap in my concert "resume". But I have seen many of the friends who joined him at this show 226 years ago today on May 27, 1989, -- Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir and Clarence, The Big Man, Clemons! Fogerty's set was part of the "In Concert Against Aids" Festival produced by Bill Graham, which included such acts as Tower of Power, Joe Satriani, Los Lobos, Tracy Chapman and the Grateful Dead. Fogerty plays a nice mix of Creedence and solo material.  Don't forget that in 1989, it had been just about 2 years since Fogerty once again began playing Creedence tunes after years of ignoring those songs due to a dispute with his record company. So for fans in attendance, his set must have been quite a treat.  For those of us who couldn't be there, we fortunately have this soundboard recording of his entire set. By the way,  Fogerty's back up musicians  at this show also included one Randy Jackson, who spent years as a judge on American Idol! Jerry Garcia Band - 1989-09-10 - Mansfield, MA  (SBD)

In 1989, the Grateful Dead’s traditional East Coast tour started about a month later than normal. The Dead were having a variety of issues with concert venues that fall. For example, one traditional tour stop, Madison Square Garden in NY, was under construction, forcing the band to re-locate to the Byrne Arena in NJ. When the band arrived at the Byrne Arena in October, they turned the last night of their stay into one of the great shows of the decade, which was later officially released as the album, Nightfall Of Diamonds (I was lucky enough to be in the audience that night!). Another regular tour stop, Hampton VA, no longer wanted the band to play in their city due to crowd control issues, including having thousands of Dead Heads camping out days prior to the show. To circumvent the ban, The Dead booked themselves into the Hampton Arena under the pseudonym “Formerly The Warlocks”. They then played 2 shows for the ages, during which they brought back songs such as Death Don’t Have No Mercy and Attics of My Life, which hadn’t been played in almost 20 years! As a result of the delay in the start of the Dead’s tour, the Jerry Garcia Band stepped in to fill the gap and played several concerts in September. Fans that got to see any of those JGB shows got an early taste of the magic. The performances were so good that 4 from that tour - 9/1 and 9/2 in Maryland, 9/5 in Hartford and 9/6 in Long Island - have all been have been officially released. This soundboard recording captures Garcia on September 10, 1989, 25 years ago today, in Hartford with special guest Clarence Clemons.
