2000s - #4: While Phil Lesh took an occasional vocal during Dead concerts, he hardly seemed like the type to front a band. Yet, once the Dead officially disbanded in 1995 after Jerry Garcia's death, he did exactly that. In 1998, he began playing under the moniker Phil Lesh and Friends. Over the years, the friends have included a virtual who’s who or rock and roll, including Jorma Kaukonen, Warren Haynes, Stanley Jordan, Steve Kimock and Derek Trucks, just to name a few. This version of Phil & Friends, as captured in this soundboard recording from the Beacon Theater in New York on February 12, 2006, 17 years ago today, includes Trey Anastasio and Joan Osborne.

Comes A Time: Tribute To Jerry Garcia – 2005-09-24 – Berkeley, CA (SBD)

Ten years after the death of Jerry Garcia, many of his former band mates, as well as numerous other friends, joined together to pay tribute to the man and his music. The Comes A Time concert (the name was taken from one of Jerry’s most poignant tunes – you can find the lyrics here) opened with David Nelson and the Black Mountain Boys, a band that Jerry Garcia played banjo for back 1964. Melvin Seals and Merl Saunders, two of the Jerry Garcia Band’s legendary keyboardists, followed that set. Then, the evening’s master of ceremonies, former Grateful Dead rhythm guitarist Bob Weir took the stage to play a set with his band, Rat Dog. As Rat Dog concluded their set, the main event began. Weir stayed on stage and was joined by the rest of the Jerry Garcia Tribute Band – former Dead members Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart, Bruce Hornsby and Donna Jean Godchaux as well as Jeff Chimenti, Hamza El Din, Bill Walton, Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring and Trey Anastasio. For the next 3 hours, this all star contingent roared through 20 of Garcia’s Grateful Dead tunes, with Hornsby and Anastasio providing some of the most memorable moments of the night. A full review of the show can be found here.  Fortunately, the amazing music helped folks forget about 3 glaring omissions from the show. Phil Lesh of the Dead; Robert Hunter, Garcia’s lyricist; and David Grisman, Garcia’s bluegrass partner, all were absent from the show, for reasons no one seemed to be able or want to explain. The night though was not about the negative. As Mickey Hart said at the show’s conclusion, all those present needed to take this spirit and positive energy of the night and "do something with it.” I suggest the first thing you do is share in the spirit and energy of September 24, 2005, a dozen years ago today, by downloading this soundboard recording of the Jerry Garcia Tribute Band’s set.

We mentioned in out post earlier this month that Phil & Friends always seems to have a Guitar God on its roster. Well, this version of the band, as captured in this soundboard recording from July 9, 2006, 11 years ago today, is no exception. It features Trey Anastasio, of Phish, sitting in with Phil in Bethel, NY, site of the original Woodstock Festival, recreating the Grateful Dead's set from Yasgur's Farm in 1969.  By the way, Trey appeared at #73 on the 2003 Rolling Stone list of the greatest guitarists, but was inexplicably not on the 2011 list.
