1980s - #6: Neil Young has always been a man who marched to the beat of his own drummer. Just take a look a the years 1988 to 1990 for a perfect example. In 1988, Neil briefly reunited with Crosby, Stills and Nash to record the album American Dream, but he chose not to tour with his sometime band mates. The next year, he recorded the solo album Freedom, a disc which included several songs featuring the heavy use of feedback and distortion. In 1990, he was back with Crazy Horse, recording the album Ragged Glory, an album similar to Freedom in its use of distortion. Those 2 discs foreshadowed the rise of grunge, with musicians such as Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, citing Young as a major influence. This soundboard recording cap[tures him on Saturday Night Live on September 30, 1989, 33 years ago today, previewing tracks from Freedom (along with the classic The Needle And The Damage Done ) which would be released 2 days later.

David Bowie - 1990-09-29 - Buenos Aires, Argentina (SBD)

1990s - #6: David Bowie launched his Sound & Vision tour on March 4, 1990, a run of shows built upon an unusual premise. The set list for the tour would feature a host of his greatest hits, which Bowie would then retire from all future concert performances. For fans, it would supposedly be their last opportunity to hear classics such as Suffragette City, Ziggy Stardust, Rebel Rebel and Changes, just to name a few, in concert. Fortunately, Bowie didn’t completely abandon his old material in future tours, but at the time no one was quite certain how serious he was about the claim. This soundboard recording captures Bowie at the Derby Rock Festival on September 29, 1990, 32 years ago today.

1970s- #6: From December 1970 to March 1971, Led Zeppelin spent time at Basing Street Studios and later, Headley Grange, working on their 4th studio album. During these sessions, the band decided that the album would have no title! After the adverse reviews their 3rd album had received, despite going to #1 on the carts in the US and UK, Led Zep decided that their 4th album should be almost anonymous. In place of a title, each band member would pick a symbol that would appear on the record’s inner sleeve. “We decided that on the fourth album, we would deliberately play down the group name, and there wouldn't be any information whatsoever on the outer jacket", Jimmy Page explained. "Names, titles and things like that do not mean a thing.” The record company strongly opposed the decision, but the band, using their considerable clout, held fast. Clearly the band knew what they were doing. The 4th Led Zep album – unofficially known by any and all of the following names: Led Zeppelin IV, Untitled, Zoso, and Runes - would be their biggest yet. Since its release on November 8, 1971, the disc has shipped over 23 million units in the United States alone, making it the third-best-selling album ever in the US. The album featured such classics as Black Dog, Rock & Roll, When The Levee Breaks, Going To California,and of course, the one and only, Stairway to Heaven. This soundboard plus adience recording recording captures the band on September 28, 1971, 1971, 51 years ago today, in in Osaka just before the release of Led Zep IV.

2010s - #6:  Powered by the dynamic husband and wife duo of Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, the band, which formed into 2010, won a Grammy for best blues album for their debut disc, Revelator, in 2011. That disc climbed to #12 on the Billboard charts, matching their circuital acclaim with commercial success. Their follow up disc, Everybody’s Talking, was a live album released in 2012, that featured their unique take on a host of cover tunes, such as the title track. The band then released studio albums, Made Up Mind in 2013 which cracked the top 15 on the Billboard charts. This excellent audience recording captures them on tour in support of Made Up Mind on Septmeber 27, 2015, 7 years ago today, during their annual fall residency at the Beacon Theater in New York City.

2000s - #6: When Paul McCartney launched his Driving The USA tour in April 2002, his first tour since 1993, he had 24 dates scheduled over 2 months. The shows proved so successful that he came back for another run in the states in the fall, performing another 23 shows as part of the appropriately named Back In The US tour.. This excellent audioence recording captures him during that second run, in Hartford on September 27, 2002, 2 decades ago today.  As he was throughout this tour, Paul's in fine form, as is the new band he assembled for his return to performing; Brian Ray, Rusty Anderson, Paul "Wix" Wickens and Abe Laboriel Jr (who also plays drums for Clapton). Despite the recent tragedies in his life -- the death of Linda, the passing of George Harrison, and the events of September 11, 2001 -- Sir Paul seems to have found peace. Beatle songs abound throughout the performance, as Paul demonstrates he had come to terms with his legacy!

2010s - #5: On June 30, 2009, U2 launched 360 degrees tour, which encompassed 110 shows over a 2 year stretch. The tour was undertaken in support of the band's then new album, No Line On The Horizon. Why a name for the tour that was different from the album title? U2 decided to name the tour after their unique stage configuration allowed the audience to almost completely surround the stage. To accommodate that set up, a massive four-legged structure nicknamed "The Claw" was built above the stage, with the sound system and a cylindrical video screen atop it. The tour became the highest grossing by any rock band in history, with $736 million in ticket sales This IEM Matrix recording  captures the band during the 2nd European leg of theour, in Spain, on September 26, 2010, a dozen years ago today.

1970s- #5: On September 14, 1970, The Byrds released the album Untitled, a double disc featuring both live and studio material. The disc was a critical and commercial success, being heralded as a return to form for the band. The line-up for the album, original member Roger McGuinn alongside Clarence White, Gene Parsons and Skip Battin, would turn out to have the longest tenure of any configuration of The Byrds. They had also begun to build a reputation for stellar live performances, and the shows during the fall of 1970 would be no exception. This soundboard recordings captures The Byrds less than 2 weeks after the release of Untitled, in Providence, on September 25, 1979, 52 years ago today.

1990s - #5: As long time readers of this blog know, I've spent numerous posts discussing the Dead's renaissance between 1989 and 1991. That period includes numerous shows that the Dead have officially released including the famed Warlock shows in Hampton Virginia on October 8 and 9, 1989; the Meadowlands NJ concert on October 16, 1989; the Landover, Maryland show on March 15, 1990;  the Madison Square Garden concerts from September 14 to 20, 1990 and 2 - yes 2 - box sets encompassing the entire Spring 1990 tour. The Dead ended this wonderful 3 year run in the fall of 1991 with 9 shows at Madison Square Garden, 6 at the Boston Garden and 5 in the San Francisco/Oakland area. The Septembe 25 show from Boston has been officially released, and a few years ago we brought you the final night in Boston on September 26, which Deadbase rated as even better than the prior night! (go here for that). Today we bring you the Dead from September 24, 1991, 31 years ago today, a show that often gets overlooked in comparison to the 2 following nights, but shoukldn;'t as it features a great Dark Star, not to mention fine versions of New Speedway Boogie, Foolish Heart.and The Weight.

1990s - #4: In 1994, Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody of The Allman Brothers Band launched a side project called Gov’t Mule. Haynes and Woody, who were fans of power trios such as Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, recruited Matt Abts to handle the drums. The new band, affectionately known to its fans as The Mule, released their self titled debut album in October 1995. This soundboard recording captures The Mule just about a month before the release of that disc, on September 13, 1995, 27 years ago today, in Macon.

1990s - #3: As the 1980’s became the 1990’s, the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career. The band reformed in 1989, on the heels of Greg Allman’s solo success with the song I’m No Angel and renewed public interest after the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the band’s 20th anniversary. Original members Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Wood, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. Pink Floyd - 1972-09-22 - Hollywood, CA (Ex Aud)

1970s - #4: In February 1972, Pink Floyd did something very few rocks bands ever have - they played 4 concerts to give the press a sneak peak at 45 minutes of new music they were developing. Those 4 shows were at the Rainbow Theater in London. That suite of tunes, originally entitled Eclipse, would eventually comprise the legendary album Dark Side of The Moon. The Rainbow concerts took place over a year before the album was released, but the reviews provided a preview of what was to come.. Michael Wale of The Times described the piece as "... bringing tears to the eyes. It was so completely understanding and musically questioning." Derek Jewell of The Sunday Times wrote "The ambition of the Floyd's artistic intention is now vast." So too would be the success of Dark Side of The Moon, as the album would sell over 50 million copies worldwide and remain on the Billboard Charts in the US for an almost incomprehensible 741 weeks spanning 15 years from 1973 to 1988. Pink Floyd would eventually play over 90 shows that year, each one previewing the soon to be released masterpiece. This excellent audience recording captures them in Hollywood on September 22, 1972, a half century ago today.

Bruce Springsteen - 1978-09-21 - Capitol Theatre, Passaic NJ (SBD)

1970s - #3: On August 23, 1978. I saw Bruce Springsteen for the first time, a show that was part of  Bruce's first run headlining at Madison Square Garden. While the Boss had become a big enough draw to fill 20,000 seat arenas, he was still at a point in his career where he could also play smaller venues. For example, in the late fall of that year, he played a host of college campuses, including the November 1, 1978 show from Princeton posted on this blog. Prior to that, he spent 6 nights at two of the NY/NJ areas most famous small concert theaters, the Palladium on September 15 to 17 and the Capitol on September 19 to 21. Perhaps inspired by being on home turf in venues where he could almost touch his audience, Bruce was at the top of his game for those half dozen shows. This soundboard recording captures the last night at the Capitol,, on September 21, 1978, 44 years ago today,  Note - while it looks like the September 19 and 20 shows have been officailly released, as far as I can tell, this one has not been!

2000s - #5: In fall 2004, Sheryl Crow, Bruce Springsteen, John Fogerty, REM, James Taylor, Neil Young Dave Mathews and a host of other rockers performed a series of concerts in 8 key states leading up to the Presidential election.  Called the Vote For Change concerts, these shows were officially non-partisan, with the goal of getting people from all parties to register and vote, but most of the performers urged concert goers to vote for John Kerry against incumbent George Bush.  While the concerts did not seem to have much impact on the election - all 8 states voted as predicted prior to the shows, 4 for Kerry and 5 for Bush - they did demonstrate the continued connection between rock and social protest, a connection dating back to the protests of the 1960s.  Crow also perfrormed a series of concerts of her own in support of Kerry. This FM broadcast captures one of those shows, in Iowa, on Sepetmber 19, 2004, 18 years ago today.

2010s - #4:  For his 80th birthday in June 2016, Kris Kristofferson releasaed a 25 track  collection of songs recorded over three days in the summer of 2014. Enitled the The Cedar Creek Sessions, the two-disc set featured new takes on some of Kristofferson’s most revered tunes, including Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down, Help Me Make It Through the Night, For the Good Times and Me and Bobby McGee.  All Music gave the album 5 stars and Rollling Stone wrote the "performances reflect Kristofferson’s craft and bone-dry conviction with the sort of integrity that can only be achieved when such a seasoned songwriter revisits his own history. The disc earned Kristofferson a Grammy Award nomination for Best Americana Album.  This FM broadcast captures Kristofferson just 3 months after the release of The Cedar Creek Sessions, in Sweden on September 18, 2016, 6 uears ago today.

1990s - #2: In September 1992, 10,000 Maniacs released the album Our Time in Eden, which featured the singles These Are Days, Candy Everybody Wants and Few and Far Between. The disc would be the last that the band would record with original lead singer Natalie Merchant. While recording the album in 1991, Merchant had informed the other members of the group that she would be leaving with the next 2 years to start a solo career. This soundboard recording captures 10,000 Maniacs on their last tour with Merchant on September 17 1992, a3 decades ago today, in Philadelphia..Just 11 months later, on August 5, 1993, Merchant formally announced her departure from the band on MTv.

1960s - #6: In addition to their set at Monterey Pop, The Who made another historic West Coast appearance on 1967. On September 17, 1967, 55 years ago today, they played 2 songs on the Smothers Brothers Comdey Show, as captured in this TV soundboard recording. The Smothers Brothers show had become a voice for the counter culture, featuring musical guests such as Joan Baez, Buffalo Springfield, Cass Elliot, Cream, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix and Pete Seeger, who had been blackballed from television for years due to his anti-war stance. No musical guest made more of an impact, however, than The Who. At the end of their performance the band destroyed their instruments on stage, including blowing up Keith Moon's drum kit.  A series of oversights and mistakes resulted in the drums having 3 explosive charges inside, however, instead of the normal one.  As a result, when Moon detonated the drums, the explosion was so intense that a piece of cymbal shrapnel cut into Moon's arm. Moon is heard moaning in pain toward the end of the tune. Townshend, who had been in front of Moon's drums at the time, had his hair singed by the blast - he is seen putting out sparks in his hair before finishing the sketch with a visibly shocked Tommy Smothers. The blast allegedly contributed heavily to Townshend's long-term hearing loss. Download this one to hear the blast for yourself, and you can go here to see it!

1960s - #5: Back in June, we brought you several posts featuring the legnedary 1967 Monterey Pop Festival.  Monterey had been hosting music festivals, howveer, long before the rock world made history there.  On October 3, 1958, the Monterey Jazz Festival made its debut, championed by Dave Brubeck, and co-founded by jazz and popular music critic Ralph J. Gleason and jazz disc jockey Jimmy Lyons.  The festival celebrtaed its 10th annversary in 1967, headlined by BB King and T Bine Walker.  This soundboard recording capture's King's set, which included a guest appeaance fro Walker, on September 16, 1967, 55 years ago today!  By the way, Janis Joplin also apeared at the the Jazz festival, making her the only artist I beleive two appear at Monterrey Pop and Monterey Jazz in 1967!

2000s -#4: After the tragic death of bassist Allen Woody in August 2000, Warren Haynes and Matt Abts decided to soldier on with Gov't Mule, recruiting David Schools as their new bass player. The 2001 tour was dubbed the New School Of Mule, a play of the new bassist's name and also a reflection of the fact that the band was entering a new stage. Overcoming adversity the Mule continued to deliver searing live performances, as evidenced in this soundboard recording from Telluride from September 15, 2001, 21 years ago today.  By the way, they get a little help at this show from the legednadry Chuck Leavell on keyboards. not to mention Alvin Youngblood Hart and Duane Betts on guitar.

The album went to #59 on the Billboard charts amd received decidely mixed reviews.  On the one hand, Rolling Stone gave the disc 4 stars and called it "a propulsive, brilliantly sung lp."  On the other hand, however, Trouser Press called the album "a disc that is watered down and should have been harder.":This FM broadcast captures Parket on tour in support The Real Macaw, on Septmber 15, 1983, 39 years ago today.

2010s - #3: In 2014, Chrissie Hynde took a break from the Pretdneders to  release her debut solo album, entitled Stockholm, after the city where she recorded it.  The abum, which featured guest appearnces by Neil Young and John McEnroe went to #36 o nthe Billboard charts and received mostly favorable reviews. Hynde went on tour in support of the disc, playing shows in both the US and Europe.  This FM broadcast captures her in London on September 14, 2014, 8 years ago today.
