Beach Boys Live - Re-Post Folder

Couldn't celebrate Independence Day without something from the quintessential "all American" band, the Beach Boys.  Afterall, in the early 1980s, the Beach Boys often played outdoor shows on July 4, once drawing over a half a million people to a show in Washington Dc.  So here's a folder of live Beach Boys shows that contains everything from them we've previously posted on this blog.'

Grab them while you can as due to space limitations this folder can't stay up forever. That said, please don't hammer the folder as that will set off alarm bells and may get it taken down by Mega. Grab a few shows each day, the come back for more the following day.

Beach Boys 1966 - Back To Back - #1: In May 1966, The Beach Boys released the album Pet Sounds, which would eventually climb to #10 on the Billboard charts.  The disc was in many ways a Brian Wilson solo album, almost entirely written, composed arranged and produced the the group's leader.  A departure from the surf and cars on the band was know for, the disc represented Wilson's first attempt at creating the greatest rock album ever made.  The disc also sparked dissension in the band, as members questioned everything from the sound and the lyrics of the album, as well as the direction Brian was setting for the band.  It was a foreshadowing of what was to come to following year, when Brian began recording Smile, the album which would almost destroy the band and would drive him to have a nervous breakdown. Despite the internal disagreements over the disc, Pet Sounds was a critical and commercial success for the band. Rolling Stone ranked the album at #2 on its listof the 500 greatest albums of all time.  Two singles from the album cracked the top 10 - Sloop John B at #3 and Wouldn't It Be Nice at #8, while God Only Knows charted in the top 40.  In addition, Good Vibrations, recorded during the Pet Sounds sessions but released as a stand alone single on October 18, 1966, climbed all the way to #1. Today we bring you highlights of the first Farm Aid, held in Champaign, IL, 4 decades ago today.  We've used AM, FM and TV soundboard sources to bring you as much of the show as possible, so many artists that I couldn't list them all in the labels accompanying the post.  We even have Bob Dylan's appearance alongsideTom Petty.  It was, of course, Dylan's somewhat controversial comments at Live Aid that prompted Neil Young, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp to embark on this 40 year old venture known as Farm Aid that has raised almost $80 million to supoport the American family farmer.  You can donate here.

Here's part 2 of our post of the FM Broadcast of the complete Live Aid concert, from July 13, 1985, 40 years ago today. This post features 2 of the most memorable performances of the day, by U2 and Queen. U2's set established them as rock superstars, while Queen's performance has often been ranked as one of the greatest live moments in rock history. This post also includes sets from Elton John, with both Kiki Dee and George Michael; Santana, with Pat Metheny; the Who in their first show since their 1982 farewell tour, and Ashford & Simpson, with a wheel chair bound Teddy Pendergrass making his first public appearance since the car accident that left him paralyzed. The Beach Boys - 1980-07-04 - Washington, DC (SBD)

Beach Boys 1980 - Back To Back - #1: As promised yesterday, here's the 2nd half of our Back to Back set featuring the Beach Boys in 1980.  This one is a soundboard recording from 44 years ago today that captures their July 4, 1980 concert at the Nationa Mall in Washington, DC. Over 500,000 people gathered on the grounds near the Washington Monument for the show.  Portions of the show were taped for an HBO special, and much of the concert was broadcast on the radio. The band returned to DC in both 1981 and 1982 for Independence Day concerts.  However, in April 1983, James G. Watt, President Ronald Reagan's Secretary of the Interior, banned July 4th rock concerts on the Mall. Watt said that the "rock bands" that had performed on the Mall on Independence Day in past years had encouraged drug use and alcoholism and had attracted "the wrong element", who would mug people and families attending any similar events in the future.  After learning, however, that the President and First Lady were both fans of the Beach Boys, Watt apologized and the band returned to the Washington DC on July 4, 1984 for a show that again drew 500,000 fans!

1988 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1988-01-20 - New York, NY (SBD)

The 1988 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class was one for the ages -  The Beach Boys, The Drifters, the Supremes, Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Les Paul, Berry Gordy Jr. and arguably the greatest American and British rock performers of all time, Bob Dylan and The Beatles, respectively. But Paul McCartney skipped the ceremeony as he was in legal battles with his ex-band mates at the time. Diana Ross also did not attend and everyone wished Mike Love had made the same decision, as his acceptance speech raged against everyone and everything, including his fellow inductees.  Fotunately, the speeches ended and the music began, and it transcended any tension that may have still lingered. George and Ringo took the stage for a rendition of I Saw Her Standing There, backed by Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Mick Jagger,  Dylan played All Along The Watchtower and Like A Rolling Stone, supported by Harrison on the first and Springsteen on the second.  Elton John played a medley of 1950s tunes and Fogerty sang Born On The Bayou. And the night ended with Jagger and Springsteen sharing vocals on (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.

In spring of 2012, the 5 remaining Beach Boys - Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks - reunited for a tour to commemorate the band’s 50th anniversary. Brian dedicated the shows, to his brothers Carl and Dennis, who had passed away in the 1980s. All told, The band played 73 shows o 4 continents during this run. This FM broadcast captures a portion of their concrt on Mya 12, 2012, 11 years ago today, at the Beacon Theatre in New York City.

According to several sources, the Beach Boys, the ultimate summer band, were actually scheduled to headline and close the concert that epitomized the Summer of Love, the Monterey Pop Festival. Brian Wilson was on the of festival's advisory board, along with Paul McCartney, that had helped conceive the event. The band pulled out of the show however, for a host of reasons. Carl Wilson was in a feud with government officials for his refusal to be drafted into military service during the Vietnam War. In addition, the band feared that their older, surf music wouldn't play to the counter-culture crowd. The band had no new materiel because they had aborted work on Smile, an album Brian had hoped would rival discs such as Rubber Soul and Revolver. Brian suffered a nervous breakdown in the process, as the workload coupled with his dependence of drugs, keft him mentally and emotionally scarred. He could barely take care of himself, let alone play live in front of thousands of fans. Smile would become , however, another element in 1967's legacy. as over the next 5 decades years, the legends surrounding the disc grew until it became possibly the most famous unreleased album in the history of popular music. In any event, ths FM broadcast captures the Beach Boys 13 years later, at the Knebworth Festival, on June 21, 1974, 42 years ago today.

The Beach Boys - 1966-01-07 - Tokyo, Japan (SBD)

1960s - #2:  The Beach Boys left California on January 5, 1966 and arrived in Tokyo the next day, their first visit to the Land of The Rising Sun.  The next day,  they played the first show of their tour, which would run until January 23. This soundboard recording captures that first concert, on January 7. 1966, 56 years ago today. What transpired at home in the US with the Beach Boys, however, was far more interesting than what took place on stage in Japan.  Brian Wilson has stayed behind, and began work on what would be perhaps the most important and influential album of the band's career, Pet Sounds.  The disc consistently shows up in the top 10 in almost every major rankling of rock albums.  For example,  in Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 ranking of the top 500 albums of all time, Pet Sounds finished 2nd, topped only by the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

1960s - #4 - On September 18, 1967, The Beach Boys released their 12th studio album, entitled Smiley Smile. Almost 16 months had passed since their last release, the new legendary album Pet Sounds. As we all now know, Smiley Smile was neither the album the band had hoped to release nor the disc the public expected. Brian Wilson suffered a mental breakdown attempting to record Smile, an album that he hoped would match the work done by the Beatles on Rubber Soul and Revolver. He also drove a huge wedge between himself and the other band members, especially Mike Love, who felt the new music was far too complex and would alienate the group's core audience. Eventually, Smile was shelved, and over the next 40 years would become the most legendary unreleased album in rock history. Smiley Smile, would only reach #41 on the Billboard charts, and Brian Wilson would withdraw from the band soon after its release. So, when the Beach Boys launched their 5th annual Thanksgiving tour in Detriot on November 17, 1967, 53 years ago today, Brian did not accompany the band. In addition, for the first time, the Beach Boys used backing musicians while on the road, including Daryl Dragon on piano, who would later go on to fame as the Captain, in the Captain and Tennile! This soundboard recording captures that Detroit show, as well as excerpts from several other dates on that tour.

Here's part 2 of our post of the FM Broadcast of the complete Live Aid concert, from July 13, 1985, 35 years ago today. from This post features 2 of the most memorable performances of the day, by U2 and Queen. U2's set established them as rock superstars, while Queen's performance has often been ranked as one of the greatest live moments in rock history. This post also includes sets from Elton John, with both Kiki Dee and George Michael; Santana, with Pat Metheny; the Who in their first show since their 1982 farewell tour, and Ashford & Simpson, with a wheel chair bound Teddy Pendergrass making his first public appearance since the car accident that left him paralyzed. The Beach Boys - 1981-07-05 - Long Beach, CA (SBD) 

A day after performing their annual July 4th concert in Washington DC, The Beach Boys flew  back to California for another performance the next day. Simulcast on both radio and TV on July 5, 1981, 39 years ago today, the concert, entitled, The Spirit of America Spectacular, featured the Beach Boys as headliners, with Three Dog Night, Rick Springfield and Pablo Cruise as opening acts. The show originated from the site where the Queen Mary is permanently docked in Long Beach, CA. and was hosted by DJ's Wolfman Jack and Charlie Tuna. The Beach Boys - 1968-12-01 - London, UK (SBD)

Beach Boys - 1968 - #1:  For The Beach Boys, the period 1967 to 1968 was the most difficult time in the band's history to that point. Tensions were high between Brian Wilson and other members of the band as Wilson, determined to create an album comparable to The Beatles' Rubber Soul and Revolver, pushed the band's music in new directions. Recording sessions for the album, Smile, drove further wedges between Wilson and the rest of the band, who felt the new music was far too complex and removed from the band's established style. Mike Love in particular felt that the Beach Boys would lose their core audience if the band continued to follow Brian's new musical direction. Eventually, Smile was shelved and Brian suffered a complete nervous breakdown.  The late 1967 album releases, Smiley Smile and Wild Honey failed to excite critics or fans.  Their 1968 album, Friends, became the groups first disc to fail to crack the Billboard top 100.  That same year, Denis Wilson found himself briefly working with with Charles Manson, whose followers would commit the horrific Tate-LaBianca murders.  The band also was forced to cancel 24 concerts that year, due to poor ticket sales. The Beach Boys reputation in the states had never been lower, with fans believing that the surfer image simply was not in step with the more psychedelic music of the day. Yet, despite the issues at home, the band's image abroad remained strong. In late 1968, the Beach Boys traveled to London whee they played 2 sold out shows.  This soundboard recording captures the first show, on December 1, 1968, 51 years ago today at the Palladium. The Beach Boys - 1981-07-04 - Washington DC (FM)

On July 4, 1980,  the Beach Boys played the National Mall in Washington DC, with over 500,000 people gathering on the grounds near the Washington Monument for the concert.  Portions of the show were taped for an HBO special, and much of the concert was broadcast on the radio.  The band returned to DC in both 1981 and 1982 for Independence Day concerts.  However, in April 1983, James G. Watt, President Ronald Reagan's Secretary of the Interior, banned July 4th rock concerts on the Mall. Watt said that the "rock bands" that had performed on the Mall on Independence Day in past years had encouraged drug use and alcoholism and had attracted "the wrong element", who would mug people and families attending any similar events in the future.  After learning, however, that the President and First Lady were both fans of the Beach Boys, Watt apologized and the band returned to the Washington DC on July 4, 1984 for a show that again drew 500,000 fans!   This FM recording captures the Beach Boys on July 4, 1981, 38 years ago today, the 2nd year they played the nation's capitol on Independence Day.

Beach Boys - 1969-06-16 - Paris, France (FM)

In March 1969, The Beach Boys released 20/20, their 15th studio album and 20th overall including live discs and compilations, hence the name. Much of the disc consists of outtakes from earlier albums, pieced together by Carl and Dennis Wilson, as Brian was absent during most of the album's recording after admitting himself into a psychiatric hospital. The album went to #68 on the Billboard Charts, a far cry from the bands chart performance earlier in the decade.  This soundboard recording captures the Beach Boys, sans Brian, on tour in support of 20.20, in Paris on June 16, 1969, a half century ago today,

Beach Boys/Allman Brothers Connections

• When the Allman Brothers closed the Fillmore East on June 27, 1971, one of the evening's special guests were the Beach Boys.
• According to legend, the Beach Boys told promoter Bill Graham they would only play if they went on last. Graham told the to pack up and leave, as he had his closing band, The Allman Brothers. The Beach Boys swallowed their pride and went on in their scheduled spot, leaving the Allmans, one of Graham's favorite bands, to be the last act to ever perform at the Fillmore

The Beach Boys - 1971-05-01 - Syracuse, NY (SBD)

The early 1970s found the Beach Boys struggling to remain a relevant musical force. In a time where the counter culture ruled the music scene, the band's surfer image and tunes seemed woefully out of place. The fact that Brian Wilson was hardly himself anymore, having suffered a nervous breakdown trying to record Smile, didn't help matters. The band attempted to rectify matters by moving to Reprise Records, described as probably "the hippest and most artist-friendly major label of the time." Reprise booked the band to sit in with The Grateful Dead at the Fillmore East on April 27, 1971, in an effort to change the band's image.  They were also booked for the closing of that venue on June 27, 1971, on the same bill with the Allman Brothers. This soundboard recording captures the Beach Boys between those 2 Fillmore East gigs, on May 1, 1971, 4 dozen years ago today, in Syracuse.  By the way, the effort to remake the band's image met with limited success as evident in a Rolling Stone review of the album Surf's Up, released in August 1971. Critic Jim Miller praised the album as "without doubt the best Beach Boys album in recent memory, a stylistically coherent tour de force", but mused: "It makes one wonder though whether anyone still listens to their music, or could give a shit about it."
