In 1999, The Who were part of a stellar Briodge School line up, which also included Emmy Lou Harris, James Iha & Billy Corgan, Lucinda Williams, Brian Wilson, Green Day, Pearl Jam, Sheryl Crow, and of course, host Neil Young. The Who ran through acoustic versions of a host of their greatest hits, and threw in some Johnny Cash covers for good meaaure. For November 2023, in honor of our 14th anniversary, our them will be Ten Rules Of The Road - Bands I've Seen Live - 1976 to 2019.   So, every concert we post will be a band I've seen in concert, and every show will takle place between 1976 and 2019, the years covered in my book, Ten Rules Of The Road I Learned At My First Concert.  In total, we'll post 44 shows, as the book covers a period of 44 years! Grateful Dead 1985 - Back To Back - #1::In 1985, The Grateful Dead celebrated 20 years together, dating back to their early days as the Warlocks. Deadheads tend to passionately debate the quality of the music that year. Some feel that the band, inspired by their milestone anniversary, played their best shows of the 80s. Others don't believe the music was much different from the prior years, and certainly not up to the standard of 1980, 1987 or 1989. Moreover, the 2nd half of 1985 was difficult period for the band, as Jerry Garcia’s heroin addiction began to consume the guitarist. Yet, even that period had its high points, as the November 1, 1985  show has been officially released.  In any event, take a listen to this back to back set just days before that November 1 concert and make up your own mind, starting with this soundboard recording from October 28,, 1985, 38 years ago today. U2 2000 - Back To Back - #1: In the fall of 2000, U2 launched a series of promotional events designed to promote their latest release, All That You Can’t Leave Behind. The events all set the stage for the following year’s Elevation tour, which we have featured on numerous occasions on this blog. The promotional activities included numerous radio broadcasts in the US and UK, as well as appearances on MTV’s TRL, Saturday Night Live and the MTV European VMA awards. The band also played 2 free concerts, for audiences of about 100 people, one in New York and one in London. This FM broadcast captures one of the radio station  promotional appearances, on the KROQ morning show, on October 26, 2000, 23 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back to Back set.

Rockpile - 1978-10-24 - Bottom Line, New York, NY (FM)

Rockpile 1978 - Back to Back - #1:-For a band that released only one album, Seconds of Pleasure, Rockpile has an amazing legacy. What many folks don't know is that songs like Cruel to Be Kind, credited to Nick Lowe, and Girls Talk, credited to Dave Edmunds, were really recorded while they were working together as Rockpile! Because the two were on different labels, however, they could not credit the band! Moreover, it’s a bit strange, to say the least, that an English group that started as a new wave band also was known for its strong rockabilly influences. Unfortunately, Rockpile had a short lived career as tensions between Lowe and Edmunds split the band apart. Fortunately for me, I got to see them during their 1979 tour, on July 8, as the lead-in band for Blondie as part of the Summer Concert Series at Belmont Race Track. Unfortunately, I've never been able to find a tape of that show. I do have, however, this WNEW-FM broadcast from the Bottom Line in NY on October 24, 1978, 45 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back to Back entry.

Neil 1986 - Back To Back - #1: Neil Young, unlike The Who, The Stones and Pink Floyd,  didn’t vanish for a good chuck of the 1980s - it only seemed that way! In 1979, Neil was at the top of the rock world, as he was honored as artist of the year for his album Rust Never Sleeps. The disc, which is clearly some of Neil's finest work, was also recognized as album of the year. Yet, on the heels of that masterpiece, Neil would enter one of the least productive periods of his career. To put it mildly, the early 1980's were not the best of times musically for Neil Young. After signing on with Geffen Records, he released a series of albums that were baffling to fans and critics alike. From Trans in 1982, an experiment in electronic music, to Everybody's Rockin' in 1983, a rockabilly album with the Shocking Pinks, to Old Ways in 1985, a country music disc, Neil's run of releases were hardly the stuff folks had come to know and love. In fact, his own record label sued him for making music that was "unrepresentative of himself". By late 1986, Neil finally began to emerge from this experimental stage of his career, reuniting with Crazy Horse for Live In A Rusted Out Garage tour. With the Horse at his side, Neil again was stomping around on stage, playing the fierce, ragged, searing music that had become his hallmark, as evidenced in this soundboard recording from Columbus form October 20 1986, 37 years ago today. The Byrds 1970 - Back To Back 0 #1: On September 14, 1970, The Byrds released the album Untitled, a double disc featuring both live and studio material. The disc was a critical and commercial success, being heralded as a return to form for the band. The line-up for the album, original member Roger McGuinn alongside Clarence White, Gene Parsons and Skip Battin, would turn out to have the longest tenure of any configuration of The Byrds. They had also begun to build a reputation for stellar live performances, and the shows during the fall of 1970 would be no exception. Elvis 1976 - Back To Back - #1: When The King took the stage ain Chicago on October 14, 1976, 347 years ago today, the sold our crowd was treated a much slimmer Elvis who was in fine voice, generating hope that the legendary singer was trying to regain his past form. Behind the scenes, however, Presley was dealing with a host of personal drama. He had hired a private investigator to try to prevent his former body guards, Red and Sonny West, from publishing a tell-all book about him. They declined a large cash offer, and just days after this show, The Star published an article entitled “Elvis’ Dramatic Plea To His Ex-Body Guards: Don’t Write This Book About Me.” Elvis was mortified that the issue went public, and fell deeper into a spiral of drug abuse and erratic behavior. A Note About Kraken Files

As you know, we use Kraken files for all our downloads.  Its quick and easy, both on the upload and download!

A couple of weeks ago, they added pop up ads which are causing some folks issues.  Here's the best way I have found to handle it.

• Use Chrome as your browser and set up pop-ups to appear in a new tab or window

• Click on the link in the post like you always do.

• When you get to the Kraken page, click on the blue download button like you always do,

• If Kraken creates a pop up, it should appear in a new tab - IGNORE THAT TAB

• Go back to the original Kraken download page and hit the blue download button again.  The  download should begin.

I've tested the above of 2 different computers and works every time for me.

Sorry for any inconvenience but finding a free file host is a nightmare. Kraken is the best I've found and I've tried tons, some long gone, like the original megaupload, and some still around, like the always difficult to use, file factory.

Phil Lesh 2021 - Back to Back - #1:  When Phil Lesh returned to the Capitol Theatre in October 2021, he brought as many friends along as he could,  His 9 night stand was broken into three 3 show segments, each featuring a different band line up.  But no trio of shows was more anticipated by fans than the first one, from October 11-13, as it reunited the Phil Lesh Quintet, nicknamed the Q.  That line up, featured, in adddition to Lesh, Warren Haynes on guitar & vocals, Jimmy Herring on guitar, Rob Barraco on keyboards and vocals, and John Molo on drums. The Q's original run, from 2002 to 2003, produced some of the best shows ever played by any iteration of Phil & Friends. This webcast recording captures the Quintet's first night in Portchester, on October 11, 2021, 2 years ago today. Los Lbos 1996 - Back To Back - #1: In March 1996, Los Lobos released their 8th studio album entitled Colossal Head.  Reviews of the album were mixed and sales were disappoiting.  As a result, it would be the band's last release on Warner Brothers, who dropped Los Lobos from the label. The lack of commericial and critical success, however, did not stop the band from touring behind the a'bum.  Thsi soundboard recording captures the first of two nights at Irving Plaza in New York City, on October 10, 1996, 27 years ago today.  Downlaod this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set.
