Lone Justice 1986 - Back To Back - #1: As long time readers of this blog know Lone Justice is one of my guilty pleasures - I could listen to the the tune Shelter or Ways To Be Wicked non stop! Today we capture Lone Justice in New York on December 13, 1986, 33 years ago this very day, on tour in support of the album Shelter. .The disc featured the 2 tunes I just mentioned and was co-produced by Jimmy Iovine and Steve Van Zandt. Yet even those two rock heavy weights and an infectious title track, couldn’t help the band achieve the breakthrough commercial success they sought, The album stalled at #65 on the Billboard charts, while the single made it only to #47. A shame that the public didn’t take to this vastly under rated band. Thos soundboard recording captures them on tour on support of the album Xhelter, during the early show at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, aon May 31, 1986, 38 years ago today. Downloas this one, then come back later today for the late show in this Back To Back set.

Chuck Berry 1995 - Back To Back - #1: The Grateful Dead's 1995 Spring/Summer tour was a train wreck. Jerry Garcia, suffering from the after effects of his 1992 health issues, coupled with an ever increasing drug addiction, often was unable to rember lyrics or chords, sometimes turning off his instrument off during shows. Looking back, it's now easy to see the signs that pointed to his untimely passing in August 1995.  Beyond  Garcia's health, a host of other issues arose during the tour. Two fans fell from the upper deck at the June 24 show, lightning struck 3 fans before the June 25 show, the band was forced to cancel their July 3 show due to damage done to the venue the previous night, and 108 fans were injured when a structure collapsed during their July 6 concert. And of course, the band played their final show on July 9, just a month before we lost Jerry.  The only bright spot of this tragic run was the opening acts.  Bob Dylan, The Band, Dave Matthews, the Black Crowes, and Rusted Root all opened shows for the Dead during this1995 tour. So did the legendary Chuck Berry!  This soundboard recording captures Chuck leading in on May 28, 1995, 29 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

JT 1974 - Back To Back - #1: When James Taylor played Carnegie Hall on May 27, 1974, a half century ago today, it was just days prior to the release of his 5th album, entitled Walking Man. That disc was Taylor’s first in 2 years, as he spent most of 1973 enjoying married life with his then wife, Carly Simon. The layoff clearly appeared to have an impact. Despite guest appearances by Paul McCartney and David Spinozza, Walking Man was not as successful as his previous discs, climbing to only #13 on the Billboard charts, his first album not to make the top 5 since signing with Warner Brothers in 1969. The disc sold a mere 300,000 copies in the US and received poor reviews. In addition, the title track, which was released as a single, failed to chart at all. Fortunately for Taylor, he would bounce back with his next album, Gorilla, released in 1975, Gorilla would reach #6 on the Billboard charts and spawn one of the biggest hits of his career, a cover of Marvin Gaye’s How Sweet it Is (To Be Loved By You).  That tune, with backing vocals by Carly Simon, would climb to #5 on the charts. This sounboard recording captures night 1 at Carneige Hall.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Bacl set.

Belinda 1988 - Back To Back - #1:  After the Go Gos broke up in 1983, the band's former lead singer, Belinda Carlisle, embarked on a solo career.  In 1985, she released her first album, appropriately titled Belinda, which climbed to #13 on the Billboard charts and featured the single, Mad About You.  A year later, she released her 2nd disc, Heaven On Earth, which also reached lucky #13 on the Billboard charts, and featured the singles Heaven Is A Place On Earth and Circles In The Sand. Thus soundboard recording captures Belina on tour in support of both albums, at the Tower Theater on May 25, 1988, 3 dozen years ago today. The set list features numerous hits from her time with the Go Gos alongside her solo material. Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back Set.  Note - with thanks to the original uploader at Albums That Should Exist.

Elvis Presley - 1974-05-23 - Lake Tahoe NV (DS) (SBD)

Elvis Presley 1974 - Back To Back - #1: Starting in August 1969, Colonel Parker signed Elvis Presley to a 5 year deal to appear at the Hilton International Hotel in Las Vegas every February and August, for the then unheard of sum of $1 million annually. In the summer of 1971, rather than send The King on a tour between the two stints in Vegas, Parker booked him at the Sahara Hotel in Lake Tahoe for 2 weeks, leading into his August run at the International. Elvis opened in Lake Tahoe on July 20, 1971, playing the first of what would be 28 shows over the 2 week run. He would come back again in 1973, 1974, and 1976, ultimately giving a total of 98 sold out performances in the hotel's High Sierra Theatre.  This soundboard recording captures Elvis during his 3rd run in Lake Tahoe, which went from May 16 to May 27, on May 23, 1974, a half centtuey ago today. Led Zep 1973 - Back To Back - #1: Led Zeppelin launched their 1973 North American on May 4, about a month after the release of the band’s 5th album, Houses of The Holy, which had gone to the top of the charts in both the US and UK. Led Zep would play outdoor stadiums for the first time on this run, including a show in Tampa on the 2nd night of the tour that drew 56,800 fans, breaking the attendance record set by The Beatles at Shea Stadium in 1965. The shows also incorporated more theatrics and special effects, including dry ice, lasers, backdrop mirrors, hanging mirror balls and pyrotechnics. The last 3 shows of the tour at Madison Square Garden were filmed and taped for use in compiling the band’s first concert movie and its accompanying live album soundtrack, both entitled The Song Remains The Same, which would be released in 1976. This soundboard recording captures the band early on in that tour, in Dallas on May 18, 1973, 51 years ago today. Macca & Wings 1973 - Back To Back- #1: In May 1973, Paul McCartney launched a tour of the United Kingdom to promote the album Red Rose Speedway and the singe Live and Let Die, from the James Bond film of the same name.  The album would climb to #1 on the US Billboard charts, powered by the single My Love, which also claimed the top spot.  Live and Let Die, would reach #2 on the Billboard charts.  For Macca, whose earlier solo releases had mixed commercial success, this was the start of a 5 year run that would feature 4 more #1 albums (Band On The Run, Venus & Mars, Wings Over America, and Wings At The Speed Of Sound) and a #2 (London Town), as well as 4 more #1 singles (Band On The Run, Listen To What The Man Said, Silly Love Songs, and With A Little Luck). Memorial Day Is Just Around the Corner - Order The Perfect Summer Read - TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT

Ten Rules Of The Road I Learned At My First Concert is one ordinary guy's saga of 160 concerts over the last 44 years: "From scalping tickets to catch Captain Fantastic at the height of his success to missing the opportunity to see Sir Paul close down Shea Stadium; from meeting one band in the middle of 43rd street to watching another play in a parking lot; from seeing a crowd throw objects at an amateur lead-in band to hearing two legends, Macca and Bruce, play "I Saw Her Standing There" - twice in a row; from never seeing Van Morrison play "Someone Like You" to having him surprise us all with a rendition of "Send In The Clowns"; from attending a concert that never started to being at a show that we wouldn’t let end; the “Ten Rules Of The Road” have marked the moments of my journey from August 15, 1976 right through today."

Frank Sinatra 1976 - Back To Back - #1: In June 2016, the Sabre Room in Hickory Hills' IL, closed its doors after 67 years in operation. The family-owned business was founded in 1949 by Arnold and Marie Muzzarelli, who actually lived upstairs! Sabre Room encompassed 100,000 square feet of entertainment and ballroom space, and acres of parking (go here for a video tour). In recent years, it was known for holding wedding receptions, New Year’s Eve parties, and countless other celebrations in its various rooms. In its heyday, with space for up to 2,500 people, it was a popular concert venue for top stars such as Dean Martin, Liberace, Bob Hope, Dorothy Lamour and Rudy Valle, just to name a few. The biggest name of all to play the Sabre Room, however, may have been Frank Sinatra, who played  the venue from May 13 to 15, 1976, doing 2 shows each night. Our Back To Back set will bring you 3 of those 6 shows, starting with this soundboard recording from May 13, 1976, 4 dozen years ago today.  Download this one, then come back the nect 2 days for parts 2 and 3.
