I've only seen Sheryl Crow once, on July 28, 2019 at the Rooftop at Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport in New York. The good news - our Chase Card got us early admission so we found a spot right in front of Sheryl's microphone (it was standing room only!), not more than 5 feet from her! The bad news - its the last concert I attended before the pandemic hit and kept us away from live music for over 2 years. That's what led to finally writing my book - since I couldn't attend live shows, figured I might as well write about them.

This webcast recording captures Sheryl about a year before I saw her in concert, at the Lockin' Festival on August 26, 2018, 8 years ago today.

I've seen U2 twice - once in August 1992 during the ZooTV tour and then again in October 2001, after the tragedy on 9-11, when the band's emotional tribute to the victims provided a much needed catharsis for us all. You can check out my book, TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT to learn the story of the time I tried to see U2 on November 24,1981 which didn't quite worked out as planned.

This FM broadcast captures U2 on June 11, 2018, 8 years ago today, during a special concert, arranged in conjunction wit SiriusXM, at the Apollo Theater in New York.  The band was in the midst of a huge stadium tour in support of the album, Song Of Experience, but on this night played to a crowd of just 1500 invited guests.

I've only seen the Stones once, in October 1989 at Shea Stadium, during their Steel Wheels tour, which is fine, since one near death expereince per life time is more than enough. You can read more about that show and why I'm thankful to be still be walking this earth in my book, TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT.

In any event, this IEM Matrix recording captures the Stones in Manchester on June 5, 2018, 8 years ago today during their No Filter tour. The tour had launched on September 9, 2017 in Hamburg, the first of a 14 show run in Europe. A second European leg of the tour was launched in May 2018. The Stones then announced a North American leg of the tour which was originally scheduled to begin in April 2019. When Mick Jagger required a heart valve replacement, those dates were all postponed by about 2 months. I'm still amazed that he only needed 60 days to be back up performing after such a serious surgery.

Elton 2018 - Back To Back - #1: In September 2018, Elton John launched his final tour, aptly named Farewell Yellow Brick Road, a play on words on the title of his #1 album and single from 1973. Due to the pandemic, the tour stretched over 5 years, encompassing more than 300 shows, across 3 continents, before coming to an end in Sweden in July 2023. I saw Elton early on in that tour, in November 2018 at Madison Square Garden.  It was a bittersweet moment  since my very first concert has been Sir Elton at that very same venue in August 1976. In fact, I dediciated an entire chapter to it in my book. In any event, this soundboard recording captures Elton during the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, just about 2 weeks before I saw him, on October 18, 2018, 7 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

For 3 straight years, from 1968 to 1970, The Isle of Wight, a small island just off the south east coast of England, was the site of major rock festivals attracting some of the biggest names in rock music.  The 1968 festival was headlined by The Jefferson Airplane while the 1969 concert featured Bob Dylan and The Who.  The 1970 festival, however, has garnered the most attention, however, for two reasons.  First, Jimi Hendrix headlined the show, which in turn attracted additional actsuch as Jethro Tull, Ten Years After, Chicago, The Doors, The Who, ELP, The Moody Blues, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, and Miles Davis.  Second, the event attracted over 600,000 people, making it the largest concert ever held until that point.  The massive nature of the event also meant it would be the last such show on the Isle of Wight for over 32 years. In 1971 the British Parliament passed the "Isle of Wight Act" preventing gatherings of more than 5,000 people on the island without a special license. The festival was revived in 2002, and has been held every year since except 2020 due to the pandemic. This webcast recording captures Sheryl Crow at the 2018 edition, in June 24, 2018, 7 years ago today.

JRAD 2018 - Back To Back - #1: Formed in 2013, Joe Russo's Almost Dead (JRAD) are one of the many Grateful Dead offshoots and cover bands that emerged in the wake of Jerry Garcia's death in 1995. Of course, JRAD has a bit more credibility tha most such bands since their leader, drummer Joe Russo, was part of Furthur with Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, as well as a member of the 2014 line up of Phil & Friends. This soundboard matrix recording captures JRAD on January 12, 2018,7 years ago today, at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY, a very appropriate venue for a Dead releated band.  Afterall, in recent years Phil Lesh has tended to celebrate his birthday there, while the theater's bar is named Garcia's, in tribute to the departed lead gutarist of the Grateful Dead!  Download this one, then come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this back to back set.

I've seen Joan Jett just once, at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ on August 17, 1983. It was the last concert I ever saw at the Capitol. Joan ended the night with a very appropriate cover of Bowte's Rebel, Rebel.

This webcast recording captures Joan some 35 years after I saw her live, in France, on June 22, 2018, 5 years ago today!

Powered by the dynamic husband and wife duo of Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, the band, which formed into 2010, won a Grammy for best blues album for their debut disc, Revelator, in 2011. Their follow up disc, Everybody’s Talking, was a live album released in 2012 that featured their unique take on a host of cover tunes, such as the title track. In 2013, they released their 2nd studio album, Made Up Mind, which climbed to #11 on the Billboard album charts. Then in January 2016, they released their 3rd studio album, Let Me Get By, which would eventually climb to #15 on the charts. This excellent audeince recording captures the band on tour about 2 years after the release of Let Me Get By, in St. Asheville on January 21, 2018, 5 years ago today.

Los Lobos is another of those artists, like John Hiatt and Marshall Crenshaw, that despite brilliant song writing and superb musicanship, simply never have been able to generate sustained commercial success.  In 1987, between the release of the album By The Light Of The Moon, and their chart topping cover of La Bamba, I tough they had finally broken through.  But their place on the charts would be short lived. The band has never let the lack of commercial success dter therm, hoevver, and they have built a career based on incendiary live performances. Thisexcellent audience recording captures them in Rancho Cucamonga on January 13, 2918, 5 years ago today.
