I've seen Bob Dylan on 3 occasions - with the Grateful Dead serving as his back up band for a set in 1987 (after the Dead played 2 sets of their own!), as a headliner in 1989, and as the lead in band for the Dead in 1995, their last tour before Jerry Garcia passed away.

Today's post captures Bob Dylan in 1994 making up for missin out on the most famous rock festival in history. Twenty five years after the original festival, rock royalty came together once again at Woodstock in August 1994.  That 25th anniversary concert was originally scheduled for August 13 and 14 and billed as “2 more days of peace and music”, borrowing from the 1969 concert’s promotional posters. A 3rd day was eventually added on August 12. Interestingly, many of the artists who played Woodstock 1994 did not perform at the original festival, such as the one and only Bob Dylan.  This soundboard recording captures Dylan on August 14, 1994, 32 years ago today, performing before an audience of 350,000. Despite the rain and mud, conditions similar to those in 1969, the crowd was mostly well behaved and embodied the spirit shown by those who attended the original Woodstock.

Bob Dylan - 1993-07-01 - Barcelona, Spain (Pre-Board)

On June 12, 1993, Bob Dylan launched a summer tour of Europe, which would run until July 17.  It was his second trip to Europe that year. During this run, Dylan played some of the longers shows of his career, with many tunes faturing long extended jams and improvisation, unlike anything Dylan had done before or since. This "pre-board" recording captures Dylan in Barcelona on july 1, 1993. 33 years ago today, during that summer tour.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of ths back to back set.  Note - this and many other shows from the 1993 run are listed as "pre-boards".  They are not quite soundboards, but rather are most likey line recordings, probably hooked to a sound monitor.

I saw Tom Petty live once, in April 1983 at the Brendan Byrne (later the Continental Airlines, and finally, the Izod) Arena. Nick Lowe was the lead-in band, making for quite a new wave night of music. I've seen Bob Dylan on 3 occasions - with the Grateful Dead serving as his back up band for a set in 1987 (after the Dead played 2 sets of their own!), as a headliner in 1989, and as the lead in band for the Dead in 1995, their last tour before Jerry Garcia passed away.

What I haven't seen is Dylan and Petty on stage together, but that's just what happened in Minneapolis on June 26, 1986, 4 decades ago this very day, as captured in this soundboard recording. Believe it or not, the 1986 Dylan/Petty tour was an outgrowth of two major concert events – Live Aid and Farm Aid. At the end of his set at Live Aid, Dylan said "I hope that some of the money…maybe they can just take a little bit of it, maybe…one or two million, maybe…and use it, say, to pay the mortgages on some of the farms and, the farmers here, owe to the banks…". While that comment angered Live Aid organizer Bob Geldorf, it did help spark the effort to organize Farm Aid. The first Farm Aid show was held just 2 months after Live Aid, on September 22, 1985. Both Dylan and Petty played at that show and struck up a mutual friendship. That led to Dylan inviting Petty and the Heartbreakers to serve as his backup band for his 1986/1987 True Confessions tour. The Dylan/Petty collaboration would later continue in the Traveling Wilburys.

In late 1975, after releasing the album Blood On Tracks earlier in the year, Bob Dylan launched the Rolling Thunder Revue tour. Dylan recruited a host of other musicians to join him on this tour, including Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Mick Ronson, Kinky Friedman, T Bone Burnett, and Bob Neuwirth. Patti Smith was also invited to be part of the Revue, but politely declined. According to Larry Sloman, who documented the tour, "onstage it was like a carnival. After intermission, the curtain rose to an incredible sight, Bob and Joan, together again after all these years. The tour met with tremendous critical acclaim. For example, Clinton Heylin Wrote "The Rolling Thunder Revue shows remain some of the finest music Dylan ever made with a live band."  Them after releasing the album Desire in early 1976, Dylan went back on the road with the Rolling Thunder Review for a series of Spring shows.  This soundboard captures the tour in Austin on May 12, 1976, a half century ago today!  Note: this one was too big for MirrorCreator so tested a new transfer host.

The 1988 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame class included arguably the greatest British and American rock performers of all time, The Beatles and Bob Dylan. The former Mr. Robert Zimmerman was inducted by Bruce Springsteen, one of the countless rock stars who at one point in their carrer was labeled the "next Bob Dylan".  Dylan played All Along The Watchtower and Like A Rolling Stone at the ceremony supported by Harrison on the first and Springsteen on the second. 

This soundboard recording captures Dylan during the legendary Rolling Thunder Revue tour in Mobile on April 29, 1976, 5 decades ago today. Supporting Dylan as part of the Revue were future Hall Of Famers Joan Baez, Willie Nelson, and Roger McGuinn.

1960s - #6: On March 22, 1965, Bob Dylan released his 5th studio album, entitled Bringing It All Back Home. The disc would climb to #6 on the Billboard charts in the US, makling it Dylan's first top 10 album in the states. Across the pond, the album would go to the top of the British charts. With tunes such as Mr. Tambourine Man, Subterranean Homesick Blues, It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue, It’s Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), and Maggie's Farm, the album would eventually be considered one of rock's masterpieces, with Rolling Stone ranking it #31 on its 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. This FM broadcast captures Dylan 5 days after the release of Bringing It All Back Home, in Santa Monica on March 27, 1965, 61 years ago today.

Today, we bring you highlights from Farm Aid 2023, held in Noblesville, IN on September 23, 2023, 2 years ago today.  This TV soundboard recording captures full sets from the 3 founders - Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young, as well as performances by 2 Bobs - Weir and Dylan. Weir hadn't appeared at Farm Aid since 1987, when part of the Grateful Dead's Madison Square Garden show was simulcast for the Farm Aid crowd.  Dylan, who had participated at the first 2 Farm Aids in 1985 and 1986, had not made an appearance since.  His participation in Farm Aid 2023 was not advertised in advance,  so the crowd was stunned when he took the stage.

Jerry Garcia's connections to Bob Dylan could fill a book. Garcia, both with the Dead and in his solo shows, made covers of Dylan tunes such as Maggie’s Farm, All Along The Watchtower, Stuck Inside of Mobile, Tangled Up In Blue, Quinn The Eskimo, It's All Over Now, Baby Blue, Senor (Tales of Yankee Power) and When I Paint My Masterpiece, just to name a few, staples of his live sets. In 2005, Rhino Records released a compilation disc entitled Garcia plays Dylan, featuring Jerry playing live versions of 18 different Dylan tunes either as a member of the Grateful Dead or at a solo show. It was a companion to an album entitled Postcards From The Hanging, released 3 years earlier, that featured 13 Dylan tunes as covered by the Grateful Dead, some with Bob Weir or Phil Lesh on vocals. Robert Hunter, Garcia's song writing partner,, co-wrote 2 songs on Dylan’s 1988 album, Down in The Groove. In 1987, Dylan and The Dead played 6 shows together, where the Dead opened with their material, then served as Dylan’s backing band for a closing set. In both 1986 and 1995, Dylan served as the lead-in band for several Dead concerts. He also made several guest appearances at their shows, most notably a February 12, 1989 show in Los Angeles and an October 17, 1994 performance in New York. Fittingly, when Bob Weir played a concert the same night his brother in music, Garcia, passed away, the song he chose to close the night was Dylan’s Knockin on Heaven’s Door. That's the very same song that Jerry played for the encore at my favorite Grateful Dead concert on September 18, 1987.

This post takes us back to 1997, when while on tour in the US, Bob Dylan was forced to cancel numerous dates after being hospitalized for a potentially fatal chest infection, called histoplasmosis. Since Dylan had embarked on what he called the Never Ending Tour in 1988, his 1997 hospital stay was his longest break from playing live. Dylan recovered, and continued to tour the US throughout August. This soundboard recording captures Dylan in Vienna VA, on August 23, 1997, 28 years ago today! By the way, the last tune of the night, Alabama Getaway, is a cover of a Grateful Dead tune sung by Garcia.  Fitting given our theme this month!

Bob Dylan - 1965-07-25 - Newport Folk Festival, RI (SBD)

The Newport Folk Festival was founded in 1959 by George Wein, who was also the founder of the already-well-established Newport Jazz Festival. The festival introduced to a national audience a number of performers who went on to become major stars, most notably Joan Baez by her appearance as an unannounced guest of Bob Gibson in 1959, and Bob Dylan, in turn a guest of Baez at the 1963 festival. Dylan, of course, is responsible for the most legendary moment in the Festiva's long storied history. On Saturday, July 24, 1965, he performed three acoustic numbers, “All I Really Want to Do”, “If You Gotta Go, Go Now”, and “Love Minus Zero/No Limit” at a Newport workshop. According to Jonathan Taplin, a roadie at Newport, Dylan made a spontaneous decision that Saturday that he would challenge the Festival by performing with a fully amplified band. Taplin said that Dylan had been annoyed by what he considered condescending remarks made by festival organizer Alan Lomax about the Paul Butterfield Blues Band when he introduced them. Dylan’s attitude, according to Taplin, was, “Well, f**k them if they think they can keep electricity out of here, I’ll do it. On a whim he said he wanted to play electric.” Dylan then assembled a band and rehearsed that night at a mansion being used by festival organizer George Wein. The next day, Sunday, July 25, 1965, Dyaln took the stage backed by  Mike Bloomfield on lead guitar, Al Kooper on organ, Jerome Arnold on bass, Sam Lay on drums, and Barry Goldberg on piano.  After an introduction by Peter Yarrow, (of Peter, Paul & Mary), Dylan launched into an electrified version of Maggoe's Farm, follwed by Like A Rolling Stone, hs\is latest single rleased just 5 days earlier.. The crowed booed, some fans felt betrayed but Dylan never looked back. Like A Rolling Stone would go to #2 on the Bilboard charts, but more importantly, would be recognized as one of the greatest songs in rock history. In 2004 amd 2010, Rolling Stone ranked it as the #1 song on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time. Dylan had gone electric, as, to paraphrase another of his classic, the times they were a changing.   Thsi soundboard recording captures that historic moment, 6 decades ago this very day.

Welcome to our 3rd and final post of the FM Broadcast of Live Aid from July 13, 1985, 4 decades  ago today.  This post features the finales at both Wembley and JFK. In London, Paul McCartney played Let It Be, but was not joined on stage by George and Ringo, despite a flurry of rumors. In fact, at one point, when Geldorf and Bowie walked on stage to sing back up for Paul, an announcer briefly yelled "there will be a reunion" before quickly correcting himself! Wembley closed with a rendition of Do You Know Its Christmas by all the performers, after which Sir Paul and Pete Towshend triumphantly hoisted Geldorf up on their shoulders. At JFK, the final acts included Eric Clapton making a triumphant return to the world stage; Phil Collins arriving from London via the Concorde to play a solo set, then playing drums for a reunion of the 3 surviving members of Led Zeppelin; and a solo set by Neil Young followed by his reunion by Crosby, Stills, and Nash. With Mick Jagger and Keith Richards feuding at the time, the Rolling Stones did not appear. Instead, Jagger played with Tina Tuner, while Richards and fellow Rolling Stone, Ron Wood, backed Bob Dylan, the last performer at JFK. Dylan stirred controversy with his remarks about redirecting some of the money to US farmers, which would lead to the first Farm Aid concerts. Live Aid ended with the all star finale at JFK playing We Are the World, the US song written for the event. An amazing and memorable day! I watched and listened to all of it, and had dozens of Maxell tapes of the show. Now we all have a digital recording of one of the most memorable events in rock history, an event that truly showed the power of rock music to make a difference. Farm Aid - 1986-07-04 - Manor TX (TV SBD)

On September 22, 1985, Neil Young, Willie Nelson & John Mellencamp, inspired by Bob Dylan's pleas at Live Aid to help the family farmer in America, launched Farm Aid intending to do just that! That first festival, which was held at the University of Illinois, attracted 80,000 fans and raised over $9 million. Over the past 4 decades, the effort has raised well over $75 million to help America's family farms while also serving a a key organization to raise awareness of the importance and plight of those farmers. This TV SBD recording captures highlights from Fam Aid 1986, held in Manor, Texas on July 4, 1986, 39 years ago today.  In addition to all the artists who performed live in Texas, the organizers simulcast portions of a concert in Buffalo featuring Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead!

During the early 1990s, Bob Dylan took a break from writing new songs. Instead, he focused on recording traditional folk songs that had influenced his musical style. In late 1992, he released the disc, Good as I Been to You, which included covers of 17 folk songs, He followed that with another album of traditional tunes in 1993, entitled World Gone Wrong. Both discs received positive critical reviews. For example, famed critic Robert Christgau gave a B+ grade To Good As I Been To You and an A- to World Gone Wrong. This soundboard recording captures Dylan on tour during that period, in the London, on February 11, 1993, 32 years ago today. While the set list is filled with Dylan classics, about mid show he plays 2 tunes from Good As I Been To You, Tomorrow Night and Jim Jones.

In May 1988, Bob Dylan released Down In The Groove, his 25th studio album. While the disc did not receive good reviews, nor sell particularly well, Dylan launched a summer tour in support of the album. The 1988 tour marked a dramtic shift for Dylan in his live performances. Where in prior years, Dylan’s live shows often featured collaborations with high-profile artists such as Mick Taylor, the Grateful Dead, and Tom Petty, the 1988 run centered around a small, 'garage rock'-type combo, consisting of guitarist G.E. Smith, bassist Kenny Aaronson, and drummer Christopher Parker. Influenced by his time with the Grateful Dead, Dylan’s set list became more adventurous, with song selection varying from show to show. He also began to incorporate more traditional cover songs into the set lists. For Dylan, the 1988 concerts would be the start of what is now known as the Never Ending Tour, which is now over 3 and a half decades and over 3000 shows strong. This soundboard recording captures Dylan during that historic 1988 tour, in Stanhope on September 10, 1988, 3 dozen years ago today.

Incredibly, as half a million gathered for an Aquarian Exposition on Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, Bob Dylan was actually living in Woodstock. He hadn't performed live since his near fatal motor cycle accident in 1966. Promoters offered him a headlining spot to make his comeback, but Dylan declined. Some sources claim it was because his son fell ill.  Others say that Bob was tired of the growing numbers of "hippies and druggies" gathering near his home. Whatever the reason, Bob passed on Woodstock.

Ironically, while the organizers of Woodstock couldn't get Dylan to play live in his own backyard, the promoters of the Isle Of Wight Festival enticed him to cross the pond with tales of the island's cultural and literary history. So, just two weeks after Woodstock, Dylan, backed by The Band, took the stage for a 17 song set, as captured in this soundboard recording.  Also on the bill were Woodstock veterans The Who, Joe Cocker, and Richie Havens. Dylan's appearance drew over 150,000 to the festival, not only for his coomeback, but also because rumors abounded that he would be joined on stage by The Beatles!  In truth, 3 of the Fab Four - John, George, and Ringo - were in attendance, but simply as fans.
