I saw Blondie in concert once, on July 8, 1979 as part of a double bill with Rockpile at Belmont Race Track.  More on that show when we get to our Rockpile post in a few days.

This FM broadcast captures Blondie over 3 decades later, in Liverpool on August 1, 2011, 15 years ago today. The band was on tour in support of their 9th studio album, enitled Panic of Girls, which had been released in May. It was  their first disc of new material in nearly 8 years, since 2003's The Curse of Blondie. By the way, Blondie paid tribute to the fact that they were in The Beatles' home town by playing Please Please Me!

Hornsby 2011 - Back To Back - #1: In early 2011, Bruce Hornsby ventured into the world of musicals, wrting the msuic and lyrics for a play entitled SCKBSTD, which told the tale what happens to a family when a mysterious stranger arrives in a small town bringing fear and paranoia in his wake. Later in the spring, he released the live album, Bride Of The Noisemakers.  That summer, he was back on the road, playing concerts that featured tunes from both the play and the live disc.  This soundboard recording captures him, backed by the Npisemakers, in Woodinville, on July 30, 2011, 15 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Southside Johnny - 2011-05-07 - Stroudsburg, PA (SBD Aud Matrix)

The New Jersey music scene rose to prominence in 1975 thanks to Bruce Springsteen. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the 2nd most famous act to emerge from that scene. Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences. All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band. Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. While Southside never rose to the prominence that Springsteen achieved, the band remained a vibrant live force in the 1990s and beyond, touring almost non stop! This soundboard matrix recording captures them taking the Jersey sound to Stroudsburg on May 7, 2011, 15 years ago today.

2010s - #4: Furthur, named after the psychedelic bus used by Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters in 1964, was the 3rd post Grateful Dead band, following the Other Ones and the Dead, to feature multiple members of that group In this case, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh teamed up to launch Furthur in 2009. The band toured from 2009 to 2014, with a host of supporting players and numerous guest sitting in along the way. This soundboard recording captures the band in  WallingfordMarch 8, 2011, 15 years ago today.  

Historical Notes - The Grateful Dead, of course, served as the house band in 1967 for Ken Kesey's Acid Tests, which were chronicled in Tom Wolfe's book, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. The bus, Furthur was driven by Neal Cassady, the inspiration for the character Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac's On the Road, who is referenced in the Grateful Dead tune The Other One in the line "Cowboy Neal at the wheel of the bus to Never Never Land".

2010s - #3:  David Crosby and Venice, a band from Santa Monica, teamed up on several occaisions to play the "For The Arts" Benefit" at Santa Monica High School.  While the set list featured all CSN songs, Crosby only sang lead on the tunes he had written.  Members of Venice took the lead vocals on the other songs, such as Ohio and Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, with Croz providing harmonies.  This spound board recording captured them Crosby and Venic at the 2011 benefit, on March  5, 2011, 15 years ago today. In October 2010, Joe Cocker released the album, Hard Knocks, his twenty-first and penultimate studio  It featured nine new songs produced by Matt Serletic plus Cocker's version of the Dixie Chicks tune, I Hope, which was produced by Tony Brown. The album reached #1 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart and #2 on the same magazine's European Albums chart. U2 - 2011-06-24 - Glastonbury, Pilton, UK (SBD)

Launched on June 30, 2008, U2’s 360° tour would run for over 2 years, visit 5 continents and encompass 110 shows, sell over 7 million tickets and gross over $736 million. The tour took its name from the unique stage configuration that allowed the audience to almost completely surround the stage. To accommodate that set up, a massive four-legged structure nicknamed "The Claw" was built above the stage, with the sound system and a cylindrical video screen atop it. As the tour wound down in June 2011 with a series of shows in North America, U2 flew across the pond to the UK on June 24, 14 years ago today, to headline the Glastonbury Festival. They left The Claw behind, but made sure to bring the intensity and fire that that has made them legends as live performers.

2011 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2011-03-14 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 2011 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony was, as cleveland.com put it, "a night for toasting cult figures, fringe characters, and somewhat unsung heroes." Neil Diamond, Leon Russell, Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, Dr. John and Darlene Love made up a class that to call it eclectic would be an undertstatement. In fact, cleveland.com suggested it might be the worst hall of fame class in history in terms of star power.  That said, every inductee showed up and played a set, filling the Waldorf with some of rock's most iconic tunes, from Right Place, Wrong Time to A Song for You to School's Out to Da Doo Run Run to Sweet Caroline.

Warren Haynes 2011 - Back To Back - #1: Since 1998, Warren Haynes has presented his annual Christmas Jam in his hometown of Asheville, NC. The concert that has provided an opportunity for the performing artists, audience and the local community to give back during the holiday season. The first show was dubbed, "The Christmas Jam: Musician's X-Mas Reunion" and was held at 45 Cherry, a local club in Asheville, on December 22, 1988. This event has continued to grow every year and is now dubbed "Warren Haynes Presents: The Christmas Jam". In fact the event has gotten so big thare's even a concert the night before, a warm up you might say, that's aptly dubbed "The Pre Christmas Jam" and is usually held at the Ornage Peel in Asheville.  At the 2011 Pre-Jam, host Warren Haynes did double duty, first playing a solo set and then later coming back to play with his band Gov't Mule.  So, those 2 sets make up today's Back To Back offering.  Ths FM Broadcast captures Warren opening the concert on December 9, 2011, 12 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back later today for part 2 of this Back To Back Set where Warren fronts Gov't Mule.

Tedeschi Trucks Band - 2011-08-15 - Denver CO (SBD)

As promied, here's another post where one of the members of our 3 featured bands in involved in a side project. After touring together in 2007 as the Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi's Soul Stew Revival, the husband & wife duo merged their respective groups to form the Tedeschi Trucks Band in 2010.[ The newly formed band released their first album in 2011, entitled Revelator. The album went to #12 on the Billboard Charts, and won a Grammy for best blues album. This FM broadcast captures the band in Denver in support of Revelator on  August 15, 2011, a dozen years ago today.

Derek Trucks, of course, played guitar for the Allman Brothers from 1999 to 2014, before leaving to work full time on the Tedeschi Trucks Band.  It should be no suprise that he spent 16 years with the Allmans since his Derek's uncle Butch Trucks, was a founding member of the band. His wife, Susan Tedeschi sat in with the Allmans during their 40th anniversary run at the Beacon in 2009 at the March 19 and March 23 shows,  Susan also has one of the most unique connections to the Allman Brothers that one could imagine - she was born on November 9, 1970, the very day the aLbum Layla was released.  That album, by Derek an the Doninoes is not only where her husband's first name was derived, but also featured Duane Allman's guitar playing, which helped propel Eric Clapton to new heights of greatest!

2010s - #6: In the summer of 2010, Gregg Allman was recovering from a liver transplant that was required after doctors found cancer had spread throughout that organ. A year later, he was back on stage, at one of the Allman Brother’s favorite venues, The Beacon Theater in New York, for a special charity show to raise money to combat hepatitis C, the very disease which had caused his cancer. The Allmans were joined on stage that night by special guests, Natalie Cole, David Crosby, Graham Nash, and Phil Lesh. This FM broadcast captures the entire 3 hour event from July 27, 2011, just 2 short years ago today. Paul Simon - 2011-07-01 - London, UK (SBD)

201os - #1 - On April 8, 2011, Paul Simon released his 12th solo studi album, entitled So Beautiful or So What. The disc debuted at #4 on the billboard charts, selling almost 70,000 copies in its first week. The disc also received critical acclaim, with Allmusic giving it 4 ½ star review, while Robert Christgau gave it a grade of A. In addition, Rolling Stone ranked it #3 on its list of the 50 best albums of 2011. Simon went on tour from April to July in support of the album, then after a 2 month break, went back out on the road from October to December. This soundboard recording captures him in during the first leg of his tour, in London at the Itunes Festival on July 1, 2011, a dozen years ago today.

Bruce Cockburn - 2011-06-26 - Laytonville, CA (FM)

I saw Bruce Cockburn as the lead in band for Bob Weir in the summer of 1992. Cockburn also joined Weir during the encore of The Weight. The show was part of the Meadowlands Summer Fest series of concerts, which believe it or not, took place in the PARKING LOT of Giants stadium. The ever resourceful John Scher, a promoter who never let anything stand in the way of making a buck, through up a stage and some retractable stands in the lot, put a fence around it, and lo and behold, created a concert venue!

In any event, this FM broadcast captures Cockburn almost 20 years later, in Laytinvilled on June 26, 2011, a dozen tears ago today.  By the way, Cockburn ends the set with Waiting On A Miracle, the same tune he finished with when I saw him, which is a song that became a regular part of the Jerry Garcia Band's set lists in th 1990s.
