1995: In November 1994, The Black Crowes released their 3rd album, entitled Amorica. The album cover, which featured a picture taken from a 1976 bi-centennial edition of Hustler that showed a bikini bottom that failed to cover all of a women’s pubic hair, generated a host of controversy. Some retailers refused to carry the album until the record company re-issued the disc with an alternate cover. Despite the controversy - or maybe because of it - Amorica climbed to #11 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures the Black Crowes on tour in support of their controversial album, headlining the H.O.R.D.E. Festival, in Mountain View on September 3, 1995, 31 years ago today.

When Jerry Garcia passed away in 1995, the Grateful Dead's long strange 3 decade trip came to an unexpected end. The members of the band decided, at least temporarily, not to continue to play together out of respect for Jerry. They would change their minds in 1998 and reform as The Other Ones, and later play as the Dead and now as Further. In 1996 and 1997, however, they took a different approach to touring. The Further Festival made the rounds in the summer of those 2 years, a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum, kindred spirits Hot Tuna, the Black Crowes, and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby, just to name a few. This soundboard recording captures the entire Furthur Festival from Cincinnati on July 16, 1997, 28 years ago today. The performances include two jams that were highlights of each stop on the tour, featuring the the various members of each band sitting in with one another, adding to the festival feeling!

2000s - #6: In 2002, Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes announced that the band was going on hiatus.  He was planning to puruse a solo career while brother Rich also has individual projects in the works. In truth, tensions between the brothers, constant line up changes in recent years, and the lack of sales sucecss of thgeir most recent album, all contributed top thge band's temporary break up.  Three years later, they reformed and went out on the road.  This soundboard recording captures them on that reunion tour, in Asheville on April 30, 2005, 2 decades ago today.

In 1996 VH1 launched Storytellers, a program in which artists performed in front of a small audience, and recounted stories about their music, writing experiences and memories. The show had its hey day between its debut and 2002, when 67 of its 98 episodes aired. This soundboard recording captures The Balc Croes on the shows's earliest episode, in New York on Augsut 27, 1996, 27 years ago today!

The Black Crowes have ties to all 3 of our featured bands this month. Former Allman Brothers's Band keyboardist Chick Leavell played on the Black Crowes debut album. On April 6, 1995, the Black Crowes were joined in studio by members of the Allman Brothers for a jam session. The Allman Brothers and Black Crowes both played at the One For Woody Concert on September 15, 2000, in honor of Allen Woody, who had passed away a month earlier. A night after the jam session just referenced, the Black Crowes opened for the Grateful Dead in Tampa.  The Crowes were part of the 1997 Furthur Festival, which featured a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum, Hot Tuna, and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby, The Crowes first hit, Hard To Handle, was one of the signature tunes of Ron "Pigpen" McKernan of the Grateful Dead .  Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes had a stint with Phil Lesh & Friends  In 2009, the Crowes played 4 nights at Levon Helm's Studios, shows that produced the live album, Before the Frost...Until the Freeze.  That same year, Levon Helm joined the Black Crowes on stage in Atlantic City for a rendition of The Weight.

1999 - In October 1999, Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes teamed up for 6 shows, 3 in New York City. 1 in Worcester, MA and 2 in Los Angeles. Each night's set list featured a mix of Led Zep and Black Crowes tunes. The LA shows yield a live album entitled, Live At The Greek. Unfortunately, due to contractual issues, the album could not include any Black Crowes material.  The October shows were so successful that Page and the Crowes went on tour together from June to October 2000.  This soundboard recording captures theie Wiorcester show from October 13, 1999, 23 years ago today.

1996 - In the early part of 1996, The Black Crowes began work on their 4th album which would be entitled Three Snakes and One Charm. The disc was recorded at a rented home in Atlanta, where the band took up residence for several months to work together on the album. The band kicked off their world tour in support of the album on July 5 in Burbank, 3 weeks prior to the disc's official release. The album climbed to #15 on the Billboard charts and received 3 star reviews from both Rolling Stone and All Music. As part of the promotional efforts in support of Three Snakes, the Crowes appeared on the VH1 program Storytellers. The show was relatively new at the time, with each episode capturing artists performing in front of a small and intimate live audience, telling stories about their music, writing experiences and memories. The Black Crowes' installment was just the fifth in the series, which eventually comprised 87 episodes over its original run. This soundboard recording captures the band in St Louis in support of the Three Snakes album, on October 1, 1996, 26 years ago today..
