David Bowie - 2004-01-31 - Los Angeles, CA (IEM Aud Matrix) 

On September 16, 2003, Bowie released the album Reality, his 23rd studio disc. The album received mixed reviews but climbed to #29 on the Billboard charts in the US, and made it all the way to the #3 spot in the UK. On October 7, Bowie launched a world tour in support of the album, which included stops in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The tour was cut short in June, however, when after a show in Germany, Bowie was diagnosed with a blocked artery that required an angioplasty procedure. This IEM matrix recording captures Bowie during that tour, in Los Angeles, on January 31, 2004, 19 ago today.

Neil Young - 1973-01-29 - Norfolk, VA (SBD)

While the album Harvest, released in February 1972, was a massive success for Neil Young. the following months proved to be trying times for him. On a personal level, his first child was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. On the musical front, he had to fire Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten because of drug us. Tragically, just a few days later, Whitten died of an overdose. Young described the situation to Cameron Crowe who was then writing for Rolling Stone magazine:: “we were rehearsing with him and he just couldn't cut it. He couldn't remember anything. He was too out of it. Too far gone. I had to tell him to go back to L.A. 'It's not happening, man. You're not together enough.' He just said, 'I've got nowhere else to go, man. How am I gonna tell my friends?' And he split. That night the coroner called me from L.A. and told me he'd OD'd. That blew my mind. I loved Danny. I felt responsible. And from there, I had to go right out on this huge tour of huge arenas. I was very nervous and ... insecure." Burdened by heartache, Neil struggled throughout the tour, especially with is voice and with the band's performance, especially drummer Kenny Buttrey, who he eventually replaced. This  recording captures Neil during that very difficult time, in Norfolk on January 29, 1973, a half century ago today. Note - 0 the text that came with this show debatea whether it is a professional soundboard or an excellent audience recording,  Eiher way, it sounds good to my ears - enjoy.

On November 29 1994, Nick Lowe released the album The Impossible Bird, which marked yet another reinvention of himself as an artist. According to reviews, the album "has a lot more to do with 1956 country music than with 1978 punk." That's hardly surprising for a man who was quoted as saying his greatest fear in recent years was "sticking with what you did when you were famous." This FM broadcast captures Lowe promoting his then new disc on the show in Philadelphia on January 28, 1995,  28 years ago today.

Paul Simon - 1965-01-27 - London, UK (FM)

Simon and Garfunkel's first album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., was released on October 19, 1964. It consisted of 12 songs, five of which were written by Simon. The album initially flopped.  The dou was at odds with each other, which unfortunately, would become all too common place during their on agian, off again career.  And so, Simon left Garfunkel behind and moved to England.  In London, he played small clubs and found a music scene where he felt valued.  He would eventually return to the US and reunite with Garfunkel after the release of a remixed, electrified version of Sounds of Silence, which originally appeared as an acoustic track on the aforementioned Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M,, soared up the charts reaching #1 in January, 1966.  This FM broadcast captures Simon solo during his time in London, on January 1, 1965, 58 years ago today.  Note - this is a rebroadcast of the show from 201 so the DJ commentary s from the re-broadcast, not the opirinal 1965 show.

Elvis Presley - 1970-01-26 - Las Vegas, NV (SBD) 

In early 1969, buoyed by the success of his December 1968 televised comeback special, Elvis Presley was ready to make a return to live performing. His manager, Colonel Tom Parket booked Elvis at the then new International Hotel in Las Vegas, which boasted the largest showroom in the city, for 57 shows spread over four weeks beginning July 31, 1969. The King was nervous, however, as those would be his first series of live shows since 1961, and his first in Las Vegas since a disastrous 1956 engagement. All nerves vanished when Presley took the stage for his first Vegas show as the audience of 2,200, including many celebrities, gave him a standing ovation before he even sang a note. Presley was spellbinding, so much so that the next day, Parker was able to negotiate a 5 year deal with The International for Elvis to play each winter and summer, at a then unheard of salary of $1 million annually. This sounbiard recording captures Elvis during the first run in that contract, on Janury 26 1970, 53 years ago today.

In August 1987, Warren Zevon released the album, Sentimental Hygiene, his the sixth studio album. but his first in over five years. The disc featured a host of notable guest stars. The track Even A Dog Can Shake Hands was composed by Peter Buck, Bill Berry and Mike Mills of R.E.M., who also recorded an album with Zevon under the name Hindu Love Gods. Michael Stipe, also of R.E.M., appeared on the album, providing vocals and harmony on the song Bad Karma. In addition, the album featured Bob Dylan playing harmonica on The Factory. This FM broadcast captures Zevon in London, on tour im support of the album, on January 25, 1988, 35 years ago today.

Allman Brothers Band - 1976-01-24 - Columbia, SC (SBD)

In 1973, in the wake of the deaths of Duane Allman and Berry Oakely, the Allman Brothers somehow found the stregth to continue on.  Increbibly, tHt year they had a #1 album, Brothers and Sisters, and a #2 single, Ramblin Man. That chart sucess, however, hid the fact that the band was disintegrating.  Drug use ran rampart. Tensions mounted between band members.  The recording of the 1975 album Win, Lose Or Draw was a chaotic mess, with Gregg recording his vocals from Los Angeles, where he was living with then girl friend Cher, while the rest of the band worked from the studio in Macon. From August 1975 to May 1976, the Allman Brothers Band played 41 shows to some of the biggest crowds of their career. but the members of the band grew apart during that run, joining together on stage but not for rehearrsals, soundchecks, or even a band meeting.  By the end of 1976, the band had broken up (they would reunite in 1979), with the final straw being when Gregg turned state's evidence during the drug trial of Scooter Herring. His bandmates labled him a snitch and refused to speak with him.  This soundboard recording from Columbia captures the band during that turbulent time, on January 24, 1976, 47 years ago today.

After John Sebastian left the Lovin Spoonful in 1968, he embarked on a solo career that never quite acheived the same level of critical or commercial success. Despite that, Sebastian toured relentlessly, often pairing up with other folk rock artists with similar sytles to his. For example, he often played with NRBQ, and in 1975, teamed up with David Bromberg.   This soundboard recording captures Sebastioan and Bromberg in Chicago on Jnauary 23, 1975, 4 dozen years ago today, taping an episode of Sound Stage. By the way, just about a year after this concert, Sebastian woul have his one moment of solo commercial success, as the tune, Welcome Back, which he wrote as the theme song for the TV sitcom Welcome Back Kotter, went to #1  on the Billboard charts.

In November 1994, The Black Crowes released their third album, entitled Amorica. The album cover, which featured a picture taken from a 1976 bi-centennial edition of Hustler that showed a bikini bottom that failed to cover all of a women’s pubic hair, generated a host of controversy. Some retailers refused to carry the album until the record company re-issed the disc with an alternate cover. Despite the controversy - or maybe because of it - Amorica climbed to #11 on the Billboard charts. This FM broadcast captures the Black Crowes on tour in support of their controversial album in Sweden on January 122, 1995, 28 years ago today.

Powered by the dynamic husband and wife duo of Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, the band, which formed into 2010, won a Grammy for best blues album for their debut disc, Revelator, in 2011. Their follow up disc, Everybody’s Talking, was a live album released in 2012 that featured their unique take on a host of cover tunes, such as the title track. In 2013, they released their 2nd studio album, Made Up Mind, which climbed to #11 on the Billboard album charts. Then in January 2016, they released their 3rd studio album, Let Me Get By, which would eventually climb to #15 on the charts. The 1988 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony could be described in the words of Charles Dickens:   "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times."  The list of inductees was unparellelled - The Beach Boys, the Drifters, the Supremes, Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Les Paul, Berry Gordy Jr.  and arguably the greatest American and British rock performers of all time, Bob Dylan and The Beatles, respectively. But Paul McCartney skipped the ceremeony as he was in legal battles with his ex-band mates at the time. Diana Ross also did not attend and everyone wished Mike Love had made the same decision, as his acceptance speech raged against everyone and everything, including his fellow inductees.  Fotunately, the speeches ended and the music began, and it transcnded any tension that may have still lingered. George and Ringo took the stage for a rendition of I Saw Her Standing There, backed by Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Mick Jagger,  Dylan played All Along The Watchtower and Like A Rolling Stone, supported by Harrison on the first and Springsteen on the second.  Elton John played amedley of 1950s tunes and Fogerty sang Born On The Bayou. And the night ended with Jagger and Springsteen sharing vocals on I Can't Get No Satisfaction.  This soundboard recording catures all those historic moments, from the Waldorf Astoria on Jnauary 20, 1988, 35 years ago today.  By the way, this article ranks all of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musical performances - the 1988 show came in 4th, behind only the 2004, 1986 and 1992 jam sessions.

Frank Sinatra - 1955-01-19 - Melbourne, Australia (SBD or Ex Aud)

In 1952, Frank Sinatra's career hit rock bottom.  He was barely drawing 100 people to concert halls that helf over a thousand people. His relationship with Columbia Records fell apart.  Frank appeared done.  Then in 1953, two  major events changed everything for Sinatra.  First, he won an Academy Award for best supporting actor for the movie From Here To Eternity, outting his film career back on track.  Second,  he moved to capitol Records, where he began recording with Nelson Riddle. The first song they worked on toegther was I've Got the World On A String, and after listening to the playbacks, Sinatra could not hide his enthusiasm, exclaiming, "I'm back, baby, I'm back!"  And he was!  His first single for Capitol, Young At Heart, released in early 1954, climbed to #2 on the charts and was eventually named Song Of The Year. So, when Frank headed down under in early 1955 for a series of shows in Austrailia, the Chairman Of The Board had officlaly regained his title!  This soundboard or excellent audioence recording captures Frank during the first of two shows in Melbourne, on January 19, 1955, 68 years ago today!  By the way, this is now the oldest recording on this blog!

In 1987, Eric Clapton opened the year with a series of concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London. That tradition would last for another 9 years, until 1996. Over that decade, EC played countless memorable shows at the RAH. Highlights from the 1990 and 1991 runs were captured on the live album 24 Nights. While 24 Nights is a wonderful album, I’ve never been a big fan of live discs that pick and choose songs from different nights on the tour. Every concert has its own unique feel and rhythm and live compilation albums can never capture that energy or emotion. That’s why we all love bootlegs, because we get to hear the show exactly as it happened, spectacular moments, unexpected surprises and even outright flubs. In that vein, this soundboard recording captured Slowhand at the RAH on January 18, 1990, 33 years ago this very day.

Van Morrison - 1974-01-17 - Kansas City, MO (SBD or Ex Aud) 

On January 11, 1974, Van Morrison launched A US tour that would run until March 16. At just about that same moment, Van released the classic live album. It's Too Late Too Stop Now. which featured his historic 1973 tour backed by the 11 piece Caledonia Soul Orchestra. Of course, in typical Van fashion, he had disbanded that group and was playing with a new assortment of musicians for this 1974 tour. He was also testing out material he had written during a 3 week vacation in Belfast back in October 1973, songs which would eventually comprise the album Veedon Fleece, released later in 1974. So this show from Kansas City from January 17, 1974, 49 years ago today, finds Van in a period of flux, something he too must have realized, as his 1977 album follow up to Veedion Fleece would be entitled A Period of Transition! Note - some sources claim this is a sounboard, others say its an excellent audience recording, Sounds good to my ears and sincc not much is available from this period of VAn's career, it was definitely worth psosting

In late 1999, Sting released his 6th album, giving him one more solo disc than he had studio albums with the Police. That album, Brand New Day, hit the top 10 in both the US and UK, and went triple platinum. The album featured numerous guest artists, including James Taylor, Branford Marsalis, and Stevie Wonder, as well as a host of string players conducted by Dave Hartley. In 2000, Sting won 2 Grammy awards for Brand New Day. He also toured extensively in support of the album, launching a world tour on October 14, 1999 that continued until July 29, 2001. This soundboard recording captures Sting during the South American leg of the tour, in Buenos Aires on January 16, 2001, 66 years ago today.

Jerry Garcia  with Merl Saunders - 1973-01-15 - Cotati, CA (SBD)

From December 1970 to June 1975, Jerry Garcia, when not playing with the Grateful Dead, often found himself collaborating with keyboardist Merle Saunders. In fact, Garcia and Saunders played over two-hundred and fifty shows together, The duo even released a live album together, entitled Live At Keystone featuring tracks from their concerts at that venue in Berkeley on July 10 and 11, 1973. This soundboard recording finds the duo about 6 months earlier, on January 15 1973, a half century ago this very day! NOTE - the first few songs of the first set sufffer from some sound issues due to problems with the master tapes.

In 1994, Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody of The Allman Brothers launched a side project called Gov’t Mule. Haynes and Woody, who were fans of power trios such as Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, recruited Matt Abts to handle the drums. The new band, affectionately known to its fans as The Mule, released their self titled debut album in October 1995. This soundboard recording captures The Mule about 3 months after the release of that disc, on January 14, 1996, 27 years ago today, in Fort Myers.

Los Lobos is another of those artists, like John Hiatt and Marshall Crenshaw, that despite brilliant song writing and superb musicanship, simply never have been able to generate sustained commercial success.  In 1987, between the release of the album By The Light Of The Moon, and their chart topping cover of La Bamba, I tough they had finally broken through.  But their place on the charts would be short lived. The band has never let the lack of commercial success dter therm, hoevver, and they have built a career based on incendiary live performances. Thisexcellent audience recording captures them in Rancho Cucamonga on January 13, 2918, 5 years ago today.

All were inducted into the Rock & Rol Hall of Fame in 1995.  And all were overshadowed that night by the headline inductees, the mighty Led Zeppelin.  Most artists get to play 1, maybe 2 songs at their induction. Zeppelin, with Jason Bonham on drums in place of his deceased father, played 4, supported by Aerosmith on two tracks and Neil Young on another. This soundboard recording captures all of the speeches and music from Led Zep from that legendary January 12, 1995 night, 38 years ago this very day.

This TV soundboard recording captures a special Country Music Edition of the show, from January 11, 1972, 51  years ago today, that saw Glen singing alongside Johnny Cash, June Carter, Merle Haggard, Buck Ownes and Jerry Reed.
