Bruce Springsteen - 1970s: In January 1973, Bruce Springsteen released his debut album, Greetings From Asbury Park, a title which paid tribute to his Jersey Shore roots. Critics loved the disc, with Robert Christgau writing “This boy has a lot more of the Dylan spirit than John Prine. His songs are filled with the absurdist energy and heart on sleeve pretension that made Dylan a genius instead of a talent.” The record buying public, however, was far less impressed. The album sold only 25,000 copies in its first year of release, and neither single, Spirits in The Night nor Blinded By The Light, dented the Billboard charts. In fact, the latter tune wouldn’t become a chart success until Manfred Man re-recorded it in 1977 and took the tune all the way to #1. Undaunted by the lack of commercial success, Springsteen went out on the road, playing small clubs across the US. This FM broadcast captures bBruce on May 31, 1973, 43 years ago today, in Richmond VA, long before he would become one of rock's biggest stars.

James Taylor - 1990s: In May 1997, James Taylor released Hourglass, his first studio album in 6 years. An introspective disc, Hourglass focused largely on Taylor's troubled past and family. For example, Enough to Be On Your Way was inspired by the alcoholism-related death of his brother Alex earlier in the decade. The dark tone of the disc was also inspired by Taylor's divorce from actress Kathryn Walker just a year earlier. The album earned Taylor his best critical reviews in some 20 years. In addition, Hourglass was also a commercial success, reaching No. 9 on the Billboard 200, Taylor's first Top 10 album in sixteen years. This sounboard recording captures Taylor the following year on tour in the wake of the succes of Hourglass, at the Beacon Theatre in New York on May 39, 1998, 18 years ago today

David Bowie - 1970s: No one show could ever fully capture David Bowie's music in the 1970s as the man proved to be a chameleon, constantly changing directions and personas.  Early in the decade he was Ziggy Stardust, the glam rocker.  By the middle of the 1970s, he was The Thin White Duke, ta hollow character reflecting Bowie's addiction to cocaine that left him almost lifeless inside.By the end of the decade, he was teaming with Brian Eno on a series of albums called the Berlin Trilogy that reflected a decisive shift in his musical style toward an electronic and avant-garde approach. In 1978, Bowie launched a world tour in support of the first 2 albums of the at trilogy, Low and Heroes (the 3rd disc, Lodger would follow in 1979) that ran from March until December, featuring 77 shows on 4 continents. This soundboard recording captures part of Bowie's show in Bremen, Germany during the European leg of the tour, on May 30, 1978, 38 years ago today.

Eric Clapton - 1990s: This soundboard, from May 29, 1998, 18 years ago today,captures EC  in Anaheim backed not only by 9 piece band but also a 20-piece orchestra with Nick Ingman as conductor. The show takes place about a month after the release of Pilgrim, an album EC dedicated to his son Conor, who died in a tragic accident at the age of 4 in 1991. While working on Pilgrim, Clapton told producer Simon Climie that his goal was to make the saddest album possible. The disc included such songs as My Father’s Eyes, River Of Tears, One Chance, Broken Hearted and Circus, about the last event he attended with Conor the day before the boy’s death. Several of those tunes, as well as Tears In Heaven, the first song he wrote dedicated to Conor, appear in the set list for this concert. Needless to say, the addition of the orchestra helped make this show not simply a rock concert, but rather a majestic tribute to his departed son. .

In 1976, Elton John was at the summit of the rock world. He had released numerous number 1 albums and singles, appeared in the movie Tommy, sold out arenas worldwide, including a then record 7 nights at Madison Square Garden, and was featured on the cover of Time magazine. While his climb to the peak had taken almost 10 years, the fall was quicker. His Blue Moves album, released in late 1976 and featuring a new backing band, did not fare as well as previous discs. In late 1977, overwhelmed with the stress of super stardom, he announced he was retiring from live performing. He spent much of the next 2 years in seclusion. When he returned to the stage in 1979, it was not at sold out stadiums with a full band, but at smaller arenas accompanied only by percussionist Ray Cooper. This soundboard, from May 28, 1979, 37 years ago today, captures one of those 2-man shows, this one from Moscow, where Sir Elton had the honor of becoming the first western rock star to play in Russia. John Fogerty -1990s: On May 20, 1997, John Fogerty released the album Blue Moon Swamp, his first studio recording in 11 years. The disc climbed to #37 on the Billboard charts and certified gold. Rolling Stone gave the album a 4 star review and in 1998, it won a Grammy for best Rock Album. After years out of the spotlight, John Fogerty was back. He went on tour in support of the album the same month it was released. In December 1997, he recorded a live album, Premonition, then continued to tour well into 1998 in support of both discs. This soundboard recording captures Fogerty on May 28, 1997, 19 years ago today, in Chicago during the early part of his tour. Download this one to capture the former Creedence front man live, before, incredibly, he took another 6 year break from recording, until he released Déjà vu (All Over Again) in 2004.

James Taylor - 1970s: When James Taylor played Carnegie Hall on May 27, 1974, 38 years ago today, it was just days prior to the release of his 5th album, entitled Walking Man. That disc was Taylor’s first in 2 years, as he spent most of 1973 enjoying married life with his then wife, Carly Simon. The layoff clearly appeared to have an impact. Despite guest appearances by Paul McCartney and David Spinozza, Walking Man was not as successful as his previous discs, climbing to only #13 on the Billboard charts, his first album not to make the top 5 since signing with Warner Brothers in 1969. The disc sold a mere 300,000 copies in the US and received poor reviews. In addition, the title track, which was released as a single, failed to chart at all. Fortunately for Taylor, he would bounce back with his next album, Gorilla, released in 1975, Gorilla would reach number 6 on the Billboard charts and spawn one of the biggest hits of his career, a cover of Marvin Gaye’s How Sweet it Is (To Be Loved By You), with backing vocals by Carly Simon, which would climb to #5 on the charts. regardless of chart success, JT always sounded good in concert, as you'll find out when you download this soundboard recording of the Carnegie Hall concert.

Bob Dylan - 1990s:  On May 27, 1995, 21 years ago today, Bob Dylan's Never Ending Tour headlined Laguna Seca Daze, a 2 day festival in Monterrey that also featured the Black Crowes, Widespread Panic and the Indigo Girls.  The Monterrey show, as captured in this soundboard recording, was Dylan's 8th stop on a West Coast swing, which had started on May continue until June 7, at which point Dylan zoomed cross country for shows in Vermont, Boston, East Rutherford, Philadelphia and Washington DC. In both East Rutherford and Washington DC, he opened for the Grateful Dead on what would proved to be their final tour before Jerry Garcia's passing.. At just about the same time Dylan launched this tour, Columbia Records released his MTV Unplugged album. Dylan had his appearance on that show at Sony Music Studios in New York on November 17 and 18, 1994. Originally, Dylan had wanted to do a set of traditional folk songs, however, at MTV's request, he instead performed mostly classics from his early albums. The result was that the album gave Dylan his best sales in years, as it reached #23 on the Billboard charts in the US, while climbing all the way to #10 in the UK.

Greg Alllman - 1990s: As the 1980s became the 1990s, the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career. The Allmans reformed in 1989, as the success of Greg Allman’s tune I’m No Angel, coupled with the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary, generated renewed public interest in the band. Original members Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Wood, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. Paul Simon - 2006-05-25 - London, UK (FM)

Paul Simon - 2000s: On May 9, 2006, Paul Simon released Surprise, his 11th studio album and first since in 6 years, since You’re The One in 2000. The album went to #14 on the Billboard charts, the best any of his discs had performed since Rhythm of The Saints climbed to #4 back in 1990. Simon promoted the album extensively, including TV appearances on Sunday Morning, Good Morning America and Saturday Night Live. In June, he launched the Surprise tour in support of the album, which ran until November and consisted of 27 dates in the US and UK. This concert finds him in London right before the tour launched, on May 25, 2006. a decade ago this very day.

Van Morrison - 2000s: Van Morrison closed the 20th century with the release of the labum Back ON Top, aptly named as it became his highest charting album in the US since Wavelength in 1972. His first album of the 21st century, Down The Road, released in 2002, continued that success.  The album not only received strong critical reviews, but became his best charting disc since St. Dominic's Preview in 1972,  reaching #26 on the Billboard charts. In between, Morrison continued to tour regularly across the US And Europe.  This FM broadcast captures Van The Man on his first visit to Poland, on May 25, 2001, 15 years ago today.

One of my good friends is a poker player, so he helped inspire our theme for the upcoming month. Bruce Springsteen - 2000-05-22 - Anaheim (SBD)

Bruce Springsteen - 2000s: In 1999, after a long, 11 year separation, Bruce Springsteen, decided, to paraphrase the immortal words of John Belushi in the Blues Brithers to put the band back back together. The Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band reunion tour launched in April 1999 and stretched until July 2000.  Some highlights included a record sold-out, 15-show run at Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey and a 10-night, sold-out engagement at New York City's Madison Square Garden, which ended the tour.  At key points in each show, usually during Tenth Avenue Freezeout and his newest song, Land of Hope and Dreams, Sprinsgteen played the role of preacher, calling on his disciples in the crowd to feel the healing power of the Ministry of Rock and Roll.  Another special moment each night occurred during If I Should Fall Behind, a song written while Springsteen was away from the E Street band. Now the song became a vow of togetherness, with Springsteen, wife Patti Scialfa, Steve Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, and The Big Man,  Clarence Clemons each singing a verse, promising to wait for each other. It was clear that the Boss was glad to be back with his old comrades. This soundboard recording captures Bruce and the E Street Band near the end of the tour, on May 22, 2000, 16 years ago today in Anaheim.

Jerry Garcia (Legion Of Mary) - 1975-05-21 - Berkeley, CA (SBD)

Jerry Garcia - 1970s:  For a man who was the spiritual leader and lead guitarist for the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia sure found an awful lot of time to play with other bands.  From his own solo ensemble, to duets with Merle Saunders, Dave Grisman, and John Kahn, to his acoustic venture Old & IN The Way, to Reconstruction, which featured Kahn and Saunders along with Jerry, Garcia always seemed to be "playing in the band."  Another side band that Jerry formed was Legion of Mary, which performed during the Dead's hiatus from October 1974 to June 1976. In addition to Garcia, Legion of Mary (LOM) included Saunders on keyboard, Kahn on bass, Martin Fierro on sax, and Ron Tutt on drums. While the band’s tenure was short, Garcia used it to continue to explore and experiment with a host of musical styles. In their live shows, the band melded together an eclectic mix blues, funk, reggae, rock, psychedelia, and especially jazz. This set from Berkeley, on May 21, 1975, 41 years ago today, is a perfect example of the breath and range of music covered by LOM. The band played R&B songs such as I Feel Like Dynamite, blues tunes such as That's What Love Will Make You Do, soul numbers such as Finder's Keepers, and reggae classics such as The Harder They Come. Perhaps almost as interesting is that the set list does not include a single Grateful Dead tune. Download this soundboard to hear a very different side of Jerry Garcia.

Elton John - 1980s: Elton John’s 1988/1989 World Tour occurred between 2 traumatic moments in his life. In early 1987, after completing a series of shows in Australia, he entered the hospital for surgery on his throat, which fortunately did not impact his ability to sing, though it did lower his register. In 1990, he entered himself into rehab to deal with his addictions to drugs and alcohol, as well as to help him overcome bulimia. Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood - 2007-05-19 - Berkshire UK (SBD)

Eric Clapton - 2000s: Few bands stayed together for less time, yet produced such a lasting legacy, as did Blind Faith.  They recorded one album, which when released in August 1969,  immediately went to number 1 on the Billboard charts. They toured in support of the album that same month, the band's only live perforances, except for their debut concert in Hyde Park in July.   Since the band had less than an hour's worth of material, they also had to play tunes from Clapton's days with Cream and Winwood's time with Traffic. Clapton was unhappy that the band was evolving into Cream, part 2, and by October, Blind Faith was no more.  It took almost 40 years for EC and Winwood to reunite for a live performance. On May 19, 2007, 9 years ago today, about halfway through Steve Winwood's set at the Country Side Rocks Festival in England, Slowhand strolled on stage to recreate history. This soundboard recording captures every note of that reunion. That night's collaboration was followed up by appearances together at Clapton's Crossroads festival in July 2007, 3 nights at Madison Square Garden in February 2008 and a joint tour in 2009.  The more things change, the more they stay the same!

Bob Dylan - 2010's:  On May 20, 2015, David Letterman hosted the final episode of his late night talk show, which had aired on CBS for over 20 years.  Leading up to the finale, each episode featured incredible guests who paid tribute to Letterman's incredible run. The penultimate show, on may 19, 2015, just 1 year ago today featured Bob Dylan who Letterman introduced as "the greatest songwriter of modern times."  As captured in this TV audio recording, Dylan fittingly performed the tune The Night We Called It A Day.  What's amazing , though, is that even as Letterman, at age 68 was calling it a career, Dylan, who is 6 years older, continues to tour and perform, over 5 decades after he first started out as a young folk singer in Greenwich Village.

Van Morrison - 1990s:  For an all too brief moment in the Spring of 1998, 3 of rocks greatest singer songwriters joined together to captivate audiences with their craft.  Between May 14 and 23, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison played 7 concerts together in 5 cities in Northwest Canada and the US.  Some nights Morrison would open and Dylan would close, other nights the reverse woas true, with Mitchell's set always occurring the middle slot of the show.  Perhaps the presence of these 2 other legends inspired Van The Man to be at his best. Rolling Stone magazine wrote of this tour, that "There have been nights when Morrison has taken a stage and crooned and yowled and raged and stomped with a transfixing passion that is peerless. The next night, though, he may seem so misplaced, frozen or detached that he cuts his show short, leaving an audience with uncomfortable memories. But Morrison's performances at the two L.A. shows, and again at the final Anaheim appearance, were a reminder of all the things he can be: a soul man who sings about love, sex, God, loss, rock & roll and poetry, and who sings about the possibilities of spirit – spirit as a way of getting through mortality's confusion, a way of seeing the world and celebrating its mysteries and treasures. Dressed in a sharp black blues-man's suit and fedora, and leading a seven-piece band, Morrison performed as if these were some of the prime nights of his life."  Those sentiments could just has easily have been written about Van's performance a few days earlier in San Jose.  This soundboard recording of that show from May 19, 1998. 18 years ago today finds Van at the top of his game, calling out song titles to the band, dedicating That's Life to Frank Sinatra, introducing Its A Man's World by saying he's about to perform the King James version of the Bible in tribute to Jame Brown.  Shows like this one is why he's called VAN THE MAN!

Jerry Garcia - 1980s:  The mid 1980s were a tough period for Jerry Garcia. Gracia became more and more dependent on heroin, neglecting his personal health in the process.  He grew overweight, exacerbating his issues in the process. In late 1984, the rest of the Grateful Dead staged an intervention, demanding Jerry check into rehab. That seemed to work for a while, as the Dead's Spring 1985 tour featured some stellar playing and creative set lists.  By the end of that year, however, Jerry had lapsed back into heroin dependency.  In the middle of 1986, the drugs, weight and other health issues all came home to roost, as Jerry lapsed into a diabetic coma after a concert in Washington DC. Fortunately he made a miraculous recovery and we were blessed with 8 more years of music before his untimely passing in 1995. This soundboard recording from May 18, 1984, 32 years ago today. captures Jerry just before the start of that dark 2 year stretch.  Incredibly, for a man about to fall into the oblivion of drug abuse, his live playing shows few, if an,  signs of the trouble ahead.

David Bowie - 1990s: David Bowie released his self-titled debut album on June 1, 1967, the same day that The Beatles released the now legendary album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Perhaps there’s something symbolic about that. After all, the album featured The Beatles portraying a fictitious band, and Bowie would spend a good portion of his early career switching from one alter ego to the next. From his androgynous Man Who Sold The World to the glam of Ziggy Stardust to the pasty Thin White Duke, Bowie continually changed characters and musical styles, reinventing himself in the process. Interestingly, when this soundboard recording was made at Bowie’s Tokyo show on May 16, 1990, 26 years ago today, the singer seemed ready to leave all those personas behind. The set list for the tour would feature a host of his greatest hits, after which Bowie would retire from all future concert performances. For fans, it would supposedly be their last opportunity to hear classics such as Suffragette City, Ziggy Stardust, Rebel Rebel and Changes, just to name a few, in concert. Fortunately, Bowie didn’t completely abandon his old material in future tours, but at the time no one was quite certain how serious he was about the claim.

Bob Dylan - 1960s:  Unlike the triumphant 1965 tour, Bob Dylan’s 1966 sojourn to England was filled with controversy. Having gone electric at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, Dylan brought The Hawks (later The Band) with him on tour, the first time he had gone on the road with a backing band. Each show consisted of an opening acoustic set and a closing electric one. Those electric sets became a lightning rod for open hostility from his audiences, who felt betrayed that he no longer played just acoustic folk songs. At the May 17 show in Manchester, which has been officially released, someone in the crowd screamed “Judas”, to which Dylan responded by telling the Hawk’s to “play it f***ing loud” as the launched into Like A Rolling Stone. At other shows, portions of the audience walked out during the electric sets. Even the critics took swipes at Dylan’s electric set, with one reviewer complaining that Dylan was “sacrificing lyric and melody to the God of big beat”. This soundboard recording captures the acoustic set from his stop in Sheffiield during that tumultous tour, on May 16, 1966, 5 decades ago this very day!

For example, in early 2011, he began recording the album Wrote a Song for Everyone which would be released on May 28, 2013, his 68th birthday. The album is a collection of classics and tracks from his canon of hits performed with other artists.  Also in 2011,  on November 17 and 18, Fogerty performed two Creedence Clearwater Revival albums, Cosmo's Factory and Green River (respectively), in their entirety at the Beacon Theater in New York City.  This FM broadcast captures him earlier that year, May 15, 2011, 5 years ago today, in Chile, playing a setlist filled with classics from his 5 decade, hall of fame career.

U2 - 1980s:  As the 1980s progressed, U2 moved from their new wave/dance roots toward a more serious and complex musical style. The albums War in 1983 and The Unforgettable Fire in 1984 expanded the band’s audience beyond the UK. Their set at Live Aid in 1985 brought them worldwide acclaim and positioned them to headline the 1986 Amnesty International Tour. None of that could have prepared the band or the music world, however, for what transpired in 1987 when they released their 5th album, The Joshua Tree. The album was filled with lyrics and music that, in Rolling Stone’s words, turned “spiritual quests and political struggles into uplifting stadium sing-alongs.” In the US, the disc debuted at #7 on the Billboard charts, then quickly climbed to #1, where it stayed for 9 weeks. The album yielded the band’s first two #1 singles, With or Without You and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, as well as its first 2 Grammy Awards. In April 1987, the band became just the 4th act to appear on the cover of Time Magazine, demonstrating that their influence had transcended the music world. Gregg Allman - 1987-05-14 - San Francisco, CA (FM)

Gregg Allman - 1980s: In 1982, the Allman Brothers broke up, unable to operate as  band anymore due to tensions, alcohol and drugs. Betts explained that :we broke up in '82 because we decided we better just back out or we would ruin what was left of the band’s image." For most of the next 5 years, Greg Allman wandered around in a drunken haze, unable or unwilling to make new music.  He later explained that “No two ways about it, the ’80s were rough. [...] It was seven years of going, "What is it that I do?” Being self-employed your whole life, that becomes a certain rock, a reinforcement. When that’s gone, not only are you bored stiff, but you just want to cry—"What do I do? I know I used to serve a purpose."  In 1987, somehow, Allman again found that purpose, recording a solo album for Epic Records appropriately entitled I'm No Angel.  The title track became a top 40 hit, and Allman went on tour in support of the disc.  This FM broadcast captures him on May 14, 1987, 29 years ago today, in San Francisco,  The success of the album brought new attention to the Allman Brothers, which was further reinforced the 2 years later by the release of the box set Dreams, celebrating the band's 20th anniversary. As the 1980s closed, the Allman Brothers would reform, and sat together for another quarter century!

Elvis Costello - 1980-05-14 - London, UK (FM)

Elvis Costello - 1980s: Although Elvis Costello was one of the 3 Angry Young men of the new wave era. in time, he moved away from that persona, diversifying hos musical style. Costello’s 4th studio album, Get Happy, released in February 1980, was one of his ventures in a new direction. The songs on the album were influenced by both R&B and Soul music. In addition, the title may be a reference to gospel music, where the phrase "getting happy" is synonymous with receiving the Holy Spirit. Some sources claim that the R&B and Soul flavor of the disc was Costello’s way of making amends for racist comments he had made about James Brown and Ray Charles in a February 1979 argument with Stephen Stills and Bonnie Bramlet, comments that Bramlet had reported to the US news media. Costello denied that was his motivation, though it does seem like more than simply a coincidence. In any event, despite the change in style, the album went to #11 on the Billboard charts, just one slot lower than Costello’s previous disc, Armed Forces. This FM broadcast captures Costello on tour in support of Get Happy, on May 14, 1980, 3 dozen years ago today. The show opens with the most famous track from Get Happy, I Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down, and includes 5 other tunes from that disc.
