I've posted numerous shows from U2's 2001 tour on this blog and with good reason. First, the shows highlight about 1/2 dozen songs from the band's album All That You Can't Leave Behind, which ranks among the best work they have ever produced. The album received tremendous critical acclaim, sold 12 million copies and won 7 Grammys. In addition, the songs Beautiful Day, Walk On, Elevation, and Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of, all were successful singles. Second, the concerts from this tour show a band with a renewed energy and purpose. The staging was more intimate than the previous Pop Mart tour, with U2 making a concerted effort to get closer to its audience. Finally, and most importantly, I will always have an emotional connection with this tour. I saw U2 on October 28, 2001 in New Jersey, in the wake of the September 11 attacks that struck nearby New York city. Songs from their new album such as Walk On, Peace on Earth and New York, all took on added meaning in the wake of that tragic day. Moreover, the sight of the names of the victims of that attack being projected on a tall backdrop, scrolling up towards the sky during One, is something I will never forget. This soundboard matrix recording captures U2 near the start of the tour, on April 13, 2001, 15 years ago today Download this one, then come back on April 20 and 24 for parts 2 and 3 of this SAme TOur, Different Show entry from U2 in 2001.
