I've seen James Taylor just once, last year at the PNC Bank Arts Center, on August 30, 2025, exactly 1 year ago today. It was a perfect night of folk rock under a starlit late summer sky.

I saw James Taylor for the first time just a year ago, on August 20, 2025, at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel.  I hadn't been to that venue in a quarter of a century, since I saw the Go Gos' there in 2000.  The reason - I hate the corporate changes made to the Arts Center. Once a place where for $5 you could sit on the lawn and picnic, now they charge you for everything from early admisson to parking close to the exit.  I put aside my hatred though to see JT  - and it was worth it. He played a set filled with classics under a moonlit sky - a perfect summer evening of song.

In any event, this soundboard recording captures JT on A&E's Love By Request programon June 25, 1997, 29 years ago today. Launched in 1996, Live By Request featured artists playing before a small studio auience where the set list was determined by viewings calling in to the show.

In 1996 VH1 launched Storytellers, a program in which artists performed in front of a small audience, and recounted stories about their music, writing experiences and memories. The show had its hey day between its debut and 2002, when 67 of its 98 episodes aired. This soundboard recording captures James Taylor's edition of the show, recorded in New York on May 31, 1997, 29 years ago today. Taylor had recently released the studio album "Hourglass," his first studio album in six years. It was seen as a comeback for him, both commercially and critically. The disc was his first Top Ten album in the U.S. in 16 years, selling over a million copies. It also won him a Grammy Award for Best Pop Album. 1980s - #7: In the early 1980s, James Taylor found his life falling apart around him. His marriage to Carly Simon ended, he was once again hooked on drugs, close friends John Belushi and Dennis Wilson both died tragically, and his music career had stalled. He thought it might be time to retire. Then he was invited to play at the Rock in Rio Festival in Rio De Janiero in January 1985 and his life changed dramatically. In an interview years later, Taylor described the experience as follows: “We put the band together and went down and it was just an amazing response. I played to 300,000 people. They not only knew my music, they knew things about it and were interested in aspects of it that to that point had only interested me. To have that kind of validation right about then was really what I needed. It helped get me back on track.” He penned the tune Only a Dream in Rio as a tribute to that night, filling the song with hopeful lyrics such as “I was there that very day and my heart came back alive.” This soundboard recording captures the rejuvenated JT about 15 months later, in Germany, on March 27, 1986, 4 decades ago today.

In May 1997, James Taylor released Hourglass, his first studio album in 6 years. An introspective disc, Hourglass focused largely on Taylor's troubled past and family. For example, Enough To Be On Your Way was inspired by the alcoholism-related death of his brother Alex earlier in the decade. The dark tone of the disc was also inspired by Taylor's divorce from actress Kathryn Walker just a year earlier. The album earned Taylor his best critical reviews in some 20 years. In addition, Hourglass was commercial success, reaching No. 9 on the Billboard 200, Taylor's first top 10 album in sixteen years. In addition, the album won 2 Grammy awards, for best pop album and best engineered album.  This FM broadcast captures Taylor on tour in the wake of the succes of Hourglass, in Switzerland at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 15, 1999, 26 years ago today.

Nuclear Disarmament Rally - 1982-06-12 - Central Park, NY (FM)

On June 12, 1982, 43 years ago today, a rock & roll "festival" was once again at the heart of a movement for social and political change. As the UN debated the issue of nuclear weapons, 750,000 people marched into New York's Central Park, demanding the removal of the “nuclear sword of Damocles,” that President John F. Kennedy two decades earlier had seen poised, “hanging by the slenderest of threads,” over the heads of every human being alive (and uncountable multitudes not yet born). Nothing like it had ever happened before  or since. The rally was not only the largest antinuclear demonstration ever, but also the largest political demonstration of any kind in American history. The day ended with a concert on the Great Lawn, featuring Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, James Taylor Linda Ronstadt and many more. Of course, WNEW-FM, the station whose motto was 'where rock lives" was there, as it had been for so many historic concerts, broadcasting live. Was the rally effective - well by year's end a referendum calling for the immediate halt of nuclear weapons deployments appeared on the ballot in 10 states, 37 cities and counties, and the District of Columbia. It passed almost everywhere. Moreover, polls showed that 85 percent of Americans supported the nuclear freeze movement.  The power of rock & roll!

1997 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1997-05-06 - Cleveland OH (TV SBD)

1990s - #1: The 1997 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction ceremony took place in the very city where the museum is located, Cleveland. Stephen Still became the first person ever inducted twice in one night, when both CSN and Buffalo Springfield entered the hall. Neil Young skipped the event, annoyed by both the ticket prices and the fact it was televised. Michael Jackson joined his brothers on stage for the induction of the Jackson 5, but did not perform. Perhaps the highlight of the night was that the The Rascals reunited, putting aside years of infighting, to accept their induction and perform People Got To Be Free.

On February 28, 2020, James Taylor released the album American Standard, provding his take will  on the Great American Songbook. The disc, his 20th studio album, was Taylor’s first since 2015’s Before This World. American Standard featured Taylor’s version of tunes such as My Blue Heaven, Moon River and Pennies From Heaven” as well as a trio of tracks penned by Rodgers and Hammerstein.  This webcast recording captures him the day before the album's release, in New York, playing tunes from the new disc alongside his own classic lie Shower The People.

On February 10, 1971, 54 years ago today, Carole King, who had spent years writing top ten hits for other people with her ex-husband, Gerry Goffin, released her 2nd solo album, entitled Tapestry, and the rest as they say is history. The disc went to #1 on the charts, and stayed there for 15 consecutive weeks, which is still a record for an album by a female artist.  Tapestry spawned two #1 singles for King, I Feel The Eart Move and It's Too Late, while James Taylor, who played on the album, went to the top of the charts with a cover of You've Got A Fried. The disc received 4 Grammy Awards, including album of the year. In addition, King became first solo female artist to win the Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and  Song of the Year. Tapestry has sold over 25 million copies worldwide, spent 313 weeks on the Billboard charts (2nd only to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon) and in 2020, was ranked as the 25th greatest album of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. This FM broadcast captures Carole on the same day Tapestry was released, playing as  set of song from that soon to be historic disc in London for the BBC.  By the way, I highly recommend seeing the musical Beautiful which tells King's story from her days writing songs with Goffin (and their friends, the song writing duo of Barry Mann and Cythia Weil) up through the release of Tapestry.  It's a wonderful retrospective of not just her early carreer, but the amazing music that emanated from the Brill Building in New York in the 1960s. According to some sources, James Taylor, who was signed to the Apple label at the time, was invited to play Woodstock on the condition that the Beatles played the festival.  When the Beatles declined (more on that in a post later this month), the invitation to Taylor was pulled. Taylor's first album, and only one the Apple label, was released in the US in February 1969. The disc included 2 tunes that would become classics, both of which also had links to the Fab Four. Paul McCartney and an uncredited George Harrison guested on bass and backing vocals respectively on Carolina in My Mind, which includes the lyric "holy host of others standing around me", which referenced The Beatles. The tune Something in the Way She Moves provided the starting point for Harrison's #1 single, Something. Ironically,  Taylor said he originally wanted the tune to be called I Feel Fine, but the title had already been taken by a Beatles song.  

In any event, this soundboard recording captures Taylor over 4 1/2 decades after Woodstock, at Fenway Park in Boston on August 3, 2015, 9 years ago today.

JT 1974 - Back To Back - #1: When James Taylor played Carnegie Hall on May 27, 1974, a half century ago today, it was just days prior to the release of his 5th album, entitled Walking Man. That disc was Taylor’s first in 2 years, as he spent most of 1973 enjoying married life with his then wife, Carly Simon. The layoff clearly appeared to have an impact. Despite guest appearances by Paul McCartney and David Spinozza, Walking Man was not as successful as his previous discs, climbing to only #13 on the Billboard charts, his first album not to make the top 5 since signing with Warner Brothers in 1969. The disc sold a mere 300,000 copies in the US and received poor reviews. In addition, the title track, which was released as a single, failed to chart at all. Fortunately for Taylor, he would bounce back with his next album, Gorilla, released in 1975, Gorilla would reach #6 on the Billboard charts and spawn one of the biggest hits of his career, a cover of Marvin Gaye’s How Sweet it Is (To Be Loved By You).  That tune, with backing vocals by Carly Simon, would climb to #5 on the charts. James Taylor - 1986-03-24 - Amsterdam Netherlands (SBD)

James Taylor entered the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2000, alongside Eric Clapton, the Lovin' Spoonful, and Bonnie Raitt, just to name a few.  Sir Paul McCartney inducted James Taylor, harkening back to the dyas when JT was o ne of the earliest artists recruited by Apple Records. 

Today's post goes back to the 1980s, a time when it didn't seem like Taylor might build the resume needed to be inducted into the Hall. At that time, Taylor found his life falling apart around him. His marriage to Carly Simon ended, he was once again hooked on drugs, close friends John Belushi and Dennis Wilson both died tragically, and his music career had stalled. He thought it might be time to retire. Then he was invited to play at the Rock in Rio Festival in Rio De Janiero in January 1985 and his life changed dramatically. In an interview years later, Taylor described the experience as follows: “We put the band together and went down and it was just an amazing response. I played to 300,000 people. They not only knew my music, they knew things about it and were interested in aspects of it that to that point had only interested me. To have that kind of validation right about then was really what I needed. It helped get me back on track.” He penned the tune Only a Dream in Rio as a tribute to that night, filling the song with hopeful lyrics such as “I was there that very day and my heart came back alive.” This soundboard recording captures the rejuvenated JT about 15 months later, in Amsterdam, on March 24, 1986, 38 years ago this very day.

2000 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2000-03-06 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 2000 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony was highlighted by the inductions of Eric Clapton, Bonnie  Raitt and James Taylor, all of whom not only performed solo, but also particated in the All Star Jam to close the night. For Clapton, it was his 3rd induction, after having been recognized as a member of Cream and The Yardbirds.  Diana Ross performed God Bless The Child in honor of Billie Holiday's imduction, while Ray Charles played Nature Boy to commerate Nat King Cole. The Lovin Spoonful reunited to play 2 songs, while Patti Smith performed People Have The Power in honor of Clive Davis's induction.  The ceremony also featured the first inductions into a new category, Sidemen.
