Today's post features 3 artists, all of whom I've seen live.  John Hiatt was the first show I attended after a 2 year hiatus due to the pandemic, on September 25, 2021 in Morristown. That was 34 years after the first tine I saw Hiatt, in August 1987 at the Pier in New York City. That gap is the 3rd longest time for me betwen seeing an artist, behind America (38 years between 1978 and 2016) and Pat Benatar (40 years between 1981 and 2021).  I saw Nick Lowe for the first time in July 1979 as part of Rockpile, at the same bill as Blondie at Belmont Race Track.  Then I saw Lowe for the 2nd time on April 1, 1983, backed by Paul Carrack. They led-in for Tom Petty.

This TV soundboard recording captures Hiatt, Lowe and Carrack in Hamburg on the German televison program Rockpalast on December 11, 1983, 42 years ago today.  Four years later, Lowe would help Hiatt record his breakthrough album, Bring The Family.

Freedomfest - 1988-06-11 - London, UK (FM)

The 1980s saw a resurgence of benefit concerts/festivals where rock artists used the power of their music and popularity to spur social & political change. While Live Aid may be the best known of those efforts, it was far from the only one. On June 11, 1988, 37 years ago today as captured in this FM broadcast, Wembly Stadium hosted Freedomfest, officially know as the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute, a concert celebrating the life and sacrifices of the anti-apartheid revolutionary and freedom fighter. The show was also designed to help pressure the Apartheid government of South Africa to release him from jail. The concert featured dozens of musical acts and entertainers, including Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Joe Cocker, Jackson Brown, and Steve Van Zandt (who appropriately played the song, Sun City, protesting Apartheid), just to name some. The show was broadcast live to 67 countries and an audience of over 600 million people. The political pressure Freedomfest place on South Africa had the intended results - 20 months after the show, Mandella was released from prison, having spent 27 years in jail. By 1994, apartheid ceased in South Africa, and Mandella was elected President of the country, a nation which would become a multicultural democracy under his leadership.

In fact, the set list includes Carrack’s two best known tunes, How Long and Tempted. When Lowe went on tour in support of the album, his backing band, Noise To Go, consisted of Carrack, Belmont, James Eller and Bobby Irwin. My in-laws are snow birds - spend the summer up North near family and spend the winters down south in Fort Lauderdale. When in Florida, they’re regulars at the Hard Rock casino, playing enough blackjack and slots to earn plenty of “comps.’ The casino normally sends them 2 tickets for every concert or show that the venue hosts. A few years ago, my wife was on her weekly call with them to see how everything was going in Florida. I overheard something about getting tickets to a show, but giving them away because they had no idea who the performer was. My wife filled in all the details for me when she got off the phone. Turns out the tickets my in laws gave away were for Eric Clapton. I still haven’t recovered. At least as a consolation prize, I found this high quality audience recording of that EC Show, from March 29, 2013, 5 years ago today.

Our second post today features an FM broadcast of Nick Lowe on March 15, 1982, 32 years ago today, from London.  In 1981 after the break up of Rockpile, Lowe recorded a solo album entitled Nick The Life.  The disc, however, has several ties to his former band.  First, it includes a slowed down cover of the Rockpile tune, Heart.  Second, both drummer Terry Williams and guitarist Billy Bremner from the band back Lowe on The album.  So too do guitarist Martin Belmont, from The Rumour and Paul carrack, from would Squeeze. Bremmer, Belmont and Carrack also join Lowe for this set for the bBC, which draws tunes from Nick The Knife, Lowe’s days with Rockpile and his classic 1978 debut disc, Jesus of Cool, which was originally released in the uS as Pure Pop for Now People to avoid having the Jesus reference in the UK title offend anyone! By the way, Carrack takes the lead on Tempted from his days with Squeeze and Lesson In Love, from his 1982 solo album Suburban Voodoo.

Having brought you some post Rockpile, solo Dave Edmunds earlier this one, it seems only fitting we do the same treatment for Nick Lowe! In 1981 after the breakup of Rockpile, Lowe recorded a solo album entitled Nick The Knife. The disc, however, has several ties to his former band. First, it includes a slowed down cover of the Rockpile tune, Heart. Second, both drummer Terry Williams and guitarist Billy Bremner from the band back Lowe on the album. So too do guitarist Martin Belmont, from The Rumour and Paul Carrack, formerly of Squeeze. Then in March 1983, Lowe released an album entitled The Abominable Showman, which included the now well know tunes  Ragin' Eyes and Time Wounds All Heels.  Carrack and Belmont also played on that album along with James Eller and Bobby Irwin. Those 4 also served as his backing band when he went on tour in support of both albums in Spring 1983, as captured in this FM broadcast from Macrh 30, 1983, 28 years ago today.
