After hosting a summer replacement show for the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, country music legend Glen Campbell was offered an opportunity to hiost his own variety show on CBS staring in January 1969,  The show ran for 4 seasons, ranking in the top 20 in its first 2 years on the air.  Naturally, Gentle On My Mind was used as the show's theme siong. This TV soundboard recording captures a special Country Music Edition of the show, from January 11, 1972, 51  years ago today, that saw Glen singing alongside Johnny Cash, June Carter, Merle Haggard, Buck Ownes and Jerry Reed.

Merle Haggard - 1997-09-11 - Shreveport LA (FM) 

Believe it or not, the Grateful Dead covered 3 different songs by the late great Merle Haggard during their 30 year long strange trip. The tune Mama Tried was a regular part of their live performances, being played over 300 times in concert. The Dead also played Haggard’s Sing Me Back Home on several occasions between 1971 and 1973. The third and final Haggard tune in their repertoire was Okie From Muskogee, which was played only once, at the Fillmore East on April 27, 1971. Incredibly, not only did the Dead also play both other Merle tunes at that show, but for Okie (and 4 other songs) they were joined on stage by the Beach Boys! This FM broadcast captures Merle on September 11, 1997, 2 decades ago this very day.

Willie Nelson – 1997-12-03 – Austin, TX (SBD)

Hard to believe that I’ve been working on this blog for over a year and haven’t gotten around to posting any Willie Nelson. Willie is more than a country music legend -- he has become an American icon. A driving force behind Farm Aid, Willie has performed alongside such rock legends as Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and John Mellencamp. I saw Willie on September 2, 1978 at Giants Stadium when he led in for the Grateful Dead at their last concert before heading off to Egypt to play the Pyramids. Willie was supposed to play alongside Waylon Jennings, but Waylon no-showed! That didn’t stop Willie from playing a set of his classics, including my favorite, Whiskey River. In any event, while Willie didn’t have a partner that September day in 1978, this soundboard recording from Willie’s from December 12, 1997, 15 years ago today, makes up for it. Willie is joined by Merle Haggard for this show, another country music legend who also has had a tremendous influence on rock and roll (The Grateful Dead, for example, have played Haggard’s Mama Tried and Sing Me Back Home in concert.) Like our last post, therefore, this one also features 2 legends on stage together, so you’ll definitely want to download it for your collection.

Here’s our first of several country western posts that we’ll have for you this month at So Many Roads. This soundboard recording captures Merle Haggard on February 13, 1981, 31 years ago today, the same year he published his autobiography, Sing Me Back Home. At that point, at age 44, enough had transpired in his life for a man twice his age. After an early life of crime, Haggard became one of the leading lights of country music, with over 30 number one hits. He helped develop the “Bakersfield Sound”, a harder edged genre of country that as a reaction against the slickly produced, string orchestra-laden Nashville sound, which was becoming popular in the late 1950s. Haggard was later associated with the outlaw country movement, along with such legends as Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. His songs, such as Sing Me back Home and Mama Tried, were covered by such rock legends as the Grateful Dead, Joan Baez and The Everly Brothers. Twenty years after he published his autobiography, Haggard continues to record and tour. In 2010, he was recognized for his lifetime of musical contributions at the annual Kennedy Center Honors ceremony. Merle’s a living legend, and no music collection would be complete without one of his live performances.
