On June 21, 1965, The Byrds released their debut album, Mr. Tambourine Man. The disc would go to #6 on The Billboard charts, which would be the best commercial performance by any album released by the band. The title track would climb all the way to #1 on the singles charts. The band would have another #1 a few months later with the title track from their 2nd album, Turn, Turn Turn, and then incredibly, never score another top 10 single. As discussed in other posts, however, while The Byrds studio work peaked early on in their career, their live apex occurred much later, long after all the original members had left with the exception of Roger McGuinn. The line up of McGuinn, Clarence White, Gene Parsons, and Skip Battin, which came together in late 1969 and lasted until 1972, was group’s longest tenured configuration and the one which established the band’s reputation as dynamic live performers. This soundboard recording captures the band during their European tour in Spring 1971, on May 7, 1971, 55 years ago today.

1970s - #3: For the Grateful Dead, the period from 1970 to 1971 was a year of transition. After the psychedelic intensity of 1969's live shows, captured in the album Live Dead, the band stunned fans and critics alike when they released Workingman's Dead in June 1970, followed by American Beauty in November. Those were laid back, Americana-styled albums, featuring carefully crafted tunes, tight harmonies, and folk and country rhythms. The 2 discs would feature what would become some of the band's best known tunes - Sugar Magnolia, Uncle John's Band, Casey Jones, and Truckin, just to name a few. The band's live concerts also evolved during this period. Songs such Dark Star, St. Stephen, The Eleven, Caution (Do Not On The Tracks) and Cryptical Envelopment which had been at the center of 1969s psychedelic jams played a less prominent role in the band's set lists. In their place, the band built jams around tunes such as Truckin, Not Fade Away and Going Down The Road.  As the band entred 1971, more change was on the horizon. Mickey Hart would leave the group in February 1971 (to return in 1974) while Pigpen's role diminished due to health issues and  an inability to truly grasp the new material. By October 1971, the band would add Keith Godchaux on keyboards to help deal with Pigpen's changing role. This soundboard recording from January 24, 1971, 55 years ago today, therefore captures the Dead right in between those 2 periods of change. Somehow, through it all, the Dead continued to shine on stage - you can read a more detailed description of the show here.

01. One More Saturday Night

GD 1971 - Back To Back - #1: When the Grateful Dead embarked on a late fall tour in 1971, they had a new addition to their live performances. Keyboardist Keith Godchaux played his first show with the band on October 19, filling in for Ron “Pigpen” McKernan who was ill, then quickly became a full time member. Keith’s wife Donna Jean would join the band the following year. The band also had some new material as they debuted future classics such as Brown-Eyed Women, Jack Straw, Tennessee Jed, “Comes A Time, Ramble On Rose, Mexicali Blues, and One More Saturday Night during this tour. In addition, the Dead used the tour as part a well planned strategy to publicize the band. They had just released their self titled double live album, better known as Skull & Roses, and had secured $100,000 (a hefty sum for the time) to promote the disc. As they often did, the Dead took an out of the box approach for their publicity campaign. Rather than spend the money on advertising, they instead used the dollars to broadcast 15 shows on their fall tour between October 19 and December 31. Rarely in rock history has such a concentrated series of live broadcast ever taken place to promote a band and a album. Often times the broadcasts lasted 5 or 6 hours, as in addition to the Dead's 2 set show, the opening act, the New Riders of The Purple Stage, also was aired live. Incredibly, Jerry Garcia usually sat in with the Riders before his show with the Dead. You can find more detail on these historic broadcasts here at the blog Lost Live Dead. This soundboard recording captures the Dead during that Fall 1971 run, in Cleveland on October 29, 1971, 54 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Today's tale tells the story of a festival that wasn't! In May 1971, rumblings spread throughout Paris that a huge music festival would be held from June 18 to 20, featuring French bands on the opening nioght, followed ny Bristish and US groups on the next 2 days. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, Jefferson Airplance and the Grateful Dead, were among the bands that were rumored to be on the bill. While its questionable if the first 4 bands listed ever truly considered playing, the Grateful Dad, and 3 tons of equipment made their way to the chateau d'Herouvillenear Paris by Saturday June 19, only to discover that due to heavy rains during the Friday perfromances, the rest of the festival had been cancelled. During their stay at the chateu, the Dead looked for a suitable place to play a concert, and even considered flying to Glastonbury.  In the end, unable to secure a location for a major show, the band played a "festival" by the side of the chateu's heated swimming pool for an audience which consisted of the entire population of the village, including the mayor, the local fire brigade, and 200 French farmers, with wives and children. This soundboard recording captures that performance, on June 21, 1971, 54 years ago today. By the way, the chateau where the Dead stayed and played is also where Elton John recorded not only the album Honky Chateau in January 1972 (hence the album title) but also both the disc's Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.

1970s - #6: In October 1970, Neil Diamond released his t6th studio album, entitled Top Root Manuscipt.  The disc certified gold in less than 3 months, rising to #13 on the Billboard album charts, thanks in large part to the success of the sinlge Cracklin' Rosie, which became Diamond's first #1 hit. The album also featured a cover of the Hollie's He Ain't Heavy (He's My Brother), which went to #20 on the charts, and the tune, Soolaimon, which would eventually become a staple of his live perfromances. This FM broadcast captures Neil on tour in support of the album, in London, on May 29, 1971, 54 years ago today.

On February 10, 1971, 54 years ago today, Carole King, who had spent years writing top ten hits for other people with her ex-husband, Gerry Goffin, released her 2nd solo album, entitled Tapestry, and the rest as they say is history. The disc went to #1 on the charts, and stayed there for 15 consecutive weeks, which is still a record for an album by a female artist.  Tapestry spawned two #1 singles for King, I Feel The Eart Move and It's Too Late, while James Taylor, who played on the album, went to the top of the charts with a cover of You've Got A Fried. The disc received 4 Grammy Awards, including album of the year. In addition, King became first solo female artist to win the Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and  Song of the Year. Tapestry has sold over 25 million copies worldwide, spent 313 weeks on the Billboard charts (2nd only to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon) and in 2020, was ranked as the 25th greatest album of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. This FM broadcast captures Carole on the same day Tapestry was released, playing as  set of song from that soon to be historic disc in London for the BBC.  By the way, I highly recommend seeing the musical Beautiful which tells King's story from her days writing songs with Goffin (and their friends, the song writing duo of Barry Mann and Cythia Weil) up through the release of Tapestry.  It's a wonderful retrospective of not just her early carreer, but the amazing music that emanated from the Brill Building in New York in the 1960s. Note: with thanks to Albums That Should Exist for the original files.

Despite frequent critical acclaim, The Youngbloods never achieved commercial success, with the brief exception of the summer of 1969 when the Woodstock generation propelled their cover of Get Together to the #5 position on the Billboard charts. The tune became synonomous with the band to some degree, as evidenced by their experience with the Johnny Carson show.  The band wanted to play both that tune and a new song during their appearance. Carson's producers, claiming time constraints, insisted on get Together and no other songs.  The band refused and did not perform at all, which, of course, didn't do much for getting the band national exposure.  In any event, as 1971 wound down, the band was on its last legs.  In 1972, they would disband and Jesse Colin Young would launch his solo career.  This FM broadcast captures the band's final live performance, in San Francisco, on December 5, 1971, 45 years ago today.  Maybe the band knew it was the end, because they finish the show with Get Together!

The first 2 years of the decade of the 1970s produced one success after another for Leon Russell. In early 1970, he organized the backing band for Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour, which included himself as well as host of musicians who had supported Delaney and Bonnie during their 1969/1970 tour. He also released his self titled solo album which included the the first recording of what would become his signature tune, A Song for You, That song has since been covered by more than 40 different artists including the Carpenters, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Willie Nelson, Helen Reddy, Whitney Houston, Donny Hathaway, and Christina Aguilera. Also in 1970, Russell played piano on Dave Mason's album, Alone Together, most notably on the song Sad and Deep as You. In March 1971, he produced some tracks for Bob Dylan, including Watching the River Flow and When I Paint My Masterpiece, both of which prominently featured Russell's gospel-flavored piano. In August, he played a set as part of George Harrison's Concert For Bangladesh. He also played on Badfinger's album Straight Up, including piano on the band's hit single, Day After Day. On top of all that, Russell released 2 albums in 1971 - Leon Russell & The Shelter People in May and Asylum Choir II in November. This FM broadcast captures him early on in the 2nd year of that incredibly productive period, in the Netherlands on February 5, 1971, 53 years ago today.

We couldn't have a month featuring the Allman Brotehrs without at least 1 post with Duane Allman at the helm.  As 1971 began, the Allman Brothers Band was riding a wave of critical success. Their 2nd album, Idlewild South, released in late 1970, had received a strong review from Rolling Stone magazine. The band’s best work, however, was still to come. The Allmans played 2 shows at the Fillmore East on March 12 and 13, which would be recorded and then released as a live album in July of that year. The resulting 2 disc set, simply entitled At Fillmore East, is often called the finest live album ever produced. Rolling Stone ranked it 49th on its list of the greatest albums in rock history. That album sealed the Allman’s reputation as one of rock’s most innovative, exciting and powerful live acts. While the Fillmore shows get the attention thanks to the historic album that documented them, the truth is that on almost every night in 1971, The Allmans, with Duane leading the way, were on fire. This soundboard recording captures the band at A&R studios in NY on August 28, 1971, 52 years ago today, just 5 months after the band's historic Fillmore East shows.  Pay particular attention to the The You Don't Love Me and Soul Serenade combination near the end of the set.  The band effortlessly moves in and out between the two songs, demonstrating the magic that was the early Allman Brothers.  Unfortunately, Duane would die in a motorcycle crash just 3 months later.  Fortunately, you can download this show and keep the spirit alive.

In September 1970, Neil Young relesased his 3rd allbum entitled After The Goldrush. The disc would rise tho#8 on the Billboard charts, and while initialt critical reviews were mixed, over the years, the album has become legendary. In 2003,, Rolliing Stone, ranked it at #71 o n its list of the greatest albums of all time, while 3years later, Time magazine ranked it among the 100 greatest albums ever. Just under 2 years later, in February 1972, Neil released Harvest, which rose to similar heights.  That album went to #1 on the Billboard charts, and was rsanked #78 on Rolling Stones' 2003 list.  Those 2 backto back albums, with sonsg sich as the the 2 title tracks, Heart Of Godl, The Needle And The Damage Done, Only Love Can Break Your Heart and Southerman, just to name a few, may have been the pinnacle of Young's legenary career. This excellent FM Broadcast captures Neil between the rlease of those 2 albums, in London, on February 23, 1971, 52 years ago today.

Elton John - 1971-12-08 - London, UK (FM)

1971 - In late 1971, Elton John released the album Madman Across The Water, which rose to #8 on the Billboard charts. The two singles from the disc, Levon and Tiny Dancer, would climb reach chart at #24 and #41, respectively. The songs on Madman, similar to those on his 3 previous albums, Tumbleweed Connection, the self titled Elton John, and Empty Sky, would often feature strings and lush orchestration. This FM broadcast, from December 8, 1971, 51 years ago his very day, captures Elton premiering several tunes from the Madman album, including both singles, the title track and one of my personal favorites, Holiday Inn.  By the way, this set is often posted in conjunction with May 22, 1970 and listed as Summer 1970. That is incorrect, however, as Madman Across the Water was not released until 1971. Some sites say the date was Summer 1971, specifically 08-12-1971. The Eltonography site, however, shows Elton on tour in Portugal that date. Other sites indicate the date was 12-08-1971, which seems more likely, as Elton was in the UK on tour at that time, having played shows in Croydon on 12-5 and Newcastle on 12-10.

Grateful Dead 1971 - Same Tour, Different Show Double Play - #1: When the Grateful Dead embarked on a late fall tour in 1971, they had a new addition to their live performances. This sounboard recording comes from that legendary tour, from San Francisco on Movember 6, 1971, 51 years ago today. Donload this one, then come back on November 20 for the 2nd half of this Same Tour, Different Show Double Play. NOTE - their are some PA problems with the piano on this one (and on every source for this show) -  its a bit scratchy in parts - beware of your use headphones.
