1989: If you’re as old as I am, you’ll remember Paul Masson Wines, and their slogan,“we shall sell no wine before its time.” That line was delivered in ultra serious tones by Orson Welles, who was eventually fired from that job when he admitted on talk show that he never drank Paul Masson wine. In any event, when I was watching those commercials as a kid, I never imagined that one day, Paul Masson wines would be associated with rock and roll. Yet, at some point in the late 1980s, perhaps recognizing that the Woodstock generation was gettting older and its tastes in beverages was changing, the vineyard began hosting rock concerts. This soundboard matrix recording captures Santana at the winery on September 9, 1989, 37 years ago today. By the way, now now known as the Mountain Winery, the venue’s annual concert series features up to 60 shows each summer.

1989: In 1972, the Jefferson Airplane broke up, then found new life as Jefferson Starship, and later just Starship. But in 1989, 20 years after Woodtstock, for a brief moment the Jefferson Airplane flew once again. Original members Paul Kantner, Marty Balin, Jack Cassady, Jorma Kaukonen and Grace Slick reunited to record an album and tour. This soundboard recording captures the Airplane during that reunion tour, at the Garden State Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ on September 2, 1989, 37 years ago today.

I've seen Joe Jackson on 3 occasions - in February 1981, in August 1980 and then in October 1982. When I saw him that final time he was in the midst of making the transition from angry punk rocker to an artist playing tunes influenced by Cole Porter, jazz and big band music.

Today's post brings us more of later day Mr. Jackson, on tour in support of his labum Blaze Of Glory.  This excellent audience recording captures him in Berkeley on August 25, 1989, 37 years ago today.

I've seen Van Morrison 7 times, across 3 decades - the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s - and each time has been unique. Van changes up the set list from tour to tour, and you never know what mood he'll be in for a concert. For example, his September 1990 show at the Garden State Art's Center was a contemplative, introspective performance. In contrast, his April 1992 concert at the Paramount in New York was an upbeat religious celebration. Then again, his 1989 show at The Beacon Theatre was a bluesy affair, with a guest appearance by John Lee Hooker. With Van, you never quite know what you'll be seeing or hearing, which is part of the fun. 

This primarily FM broadcast, with some audience tracks intersperrded, captures Van in Italy on June 29, 1989, 37 years ago today.  Unlike the perfromance I saw later that year, Van skipped the blues for a setlist filled with classics.

After several years of relentless touring, Huey Lewis and the News took some time off from live shows in 1989 with one notable exception. In May of 1989, promoter Bill Graham presented a series of benefit concerts, called "In Concert Against AIDS at multiple venues across the Bay Area. The goal was to to raise awareness about the deadly disease, while also raising funds for both research and care for those afflicted in the Bay Area. Huey Lewis and The News took part in that effort, playing a concert on May 23, 1989, 37 years ago today, at Slim's in San Francisco.

Grateful Dead - 1989-02-10 - Inglewood, CA (SBD)

Dead 1989 - Back To Back - #1: The Grateful Dead's Fall 1989 tour gets a host of attention and rightly so as the band was in peak form.  For example, on October 8 & 9, the band plays 2 shows in Hampton, VA billed as “Formerly The Warlocks”. For thOse shows, The Dead reached back into their song catalog and played some tunes that hadn't been in the set list for nearly 2 decades, including Attics of My Life, We Bid You Goodnight and Death Don’t Have No Mercy. Both shows have been officially released. A week after the Hampton shows, the Dead played another masterpiece for Bob Weir’s 42nd birthday, on October 16, 1989 (I was there), another show which has been officially released as an album entitled, Nightfall of Diamonds.  The October 26 show has also been officially released, as part of the 30 Trips Around The Sun box set. Given how strong the Fall tour eas, folks sometimes forget that the band played well throughout 1989, with shows from April and July also being selected for official release.  Moreover, the year started out with 6 excellent shows in their home state of California, 3 in San Francisco on February 5, 6 and 7 followed by 3 in Inglewood on February 10, 11 and 12.  This soundboard recording captures night 1 in Inglewood, on February 10, 1989, 37 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this Back to Back set.

Over the years I've seen Neil 6 times - 3 acoustic shows, 2 electric shows and once with CSNY. I've seen him play quiet, heartfelt,, spare renditions of his tunes, and I've seen him stomp around, backed by Crazy Horse, like a man possessed, living up to his nickname as the Godfather of Grunge. I've seen him perform the rock opera Greendale and I've seen him help turbo charge his on again, off again band mates Crosby, Stills and Nash. No matter what, one thing remained constant in all these performances - Neil stays true to himself and plays what moves him at the moment.

This excellent audience recording captures Neil just a few months after I saw him live for the first time, doing an acoustic show in the Netherlands on December 13, 1989, 3 dozen years ago today.

1980s - #5: In 1985, Edie Brickell, was invited to sing in a local folk rock group, New Bohemians. Soon after, she would join the band as lead singer. Three years later, their 1988 debut album, Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, became surprise critical and commercial success. The album sold over 3 million copies and climbed to #4 on the Billboard charts. The single, What I Am, went to # 7 on the Billboard charts and received extensive airplay on MTV. In addition, What I Am was featured in a 1989 episode of Miami Vice, an episode of Beavis and Butt-Head, an episode of Doogie Howser, M.D. and in the 1989 Patrick Dempsey film Loverboy.  This soundbaord recording captures them during that breakthrough year, in Chicago, on November 29, 1988, 37 years ago today.

1980s - #4: On October 17, 1989, an arthquake wuth a magniude of 6.9 struck the San Francisco area, killing 63 people and injuring 3800 others.  The quake, the strongest to hit the region since 1906, did over $6 billion in damage. As had been the case with other tragedies, rock and rollers came together to help raise money for those impacted by the deadly quake.  This FM broadcast captures highlights of the Earthquake Relief Benefit concert from the Cow Palace on November 26, 1989, 3 dozen years ago today, including sets from Neil Young, Crosby Stills & Nash, America, Eddie Money, Steve Miller, and Jessie Colin Young.

1980s - #2: Maria Mckee was the lead singer for Lone Justice, and is the voice that powered one of my favorite, and one of the most under rated tunes, in rock history. The tune Shelter, from the album of the same name, has every quality of a #1 single, yet it barely cracked the top 40. Maybe that's why soon after the song was released, McKee broke up Lone Justice and started a solo career. She released her self-titled debut album on June 1989, which received glowing reviews from the Washington Post, New Musical Express, and Melody maker.  This FM broadcast captures her on tour in spport of that first album, on November 11, 1989, 3 dozen years ago today.

The first time I saw Jerry Garcia solo was the late show on March 17, 1978, at the Capital Theatre in Passaic, NJ.  The first song I heard him play - a cover of the Jimmy Cliff's, The Harder They Come.  Garcia played that tune over 350 times in his various solo bands, making it the 2nd most played song behind How Sweet It Is.  So, it was only fitting, that on Augut 26, 1989, 2 dozen years ago today as captured in this excellent audience recording, Cliff joined Garcia on stage, to sing what else, but the Harder They Come! By the way, Garcia was also fond of playing another Cliff tune, Sitting In Limbo, when performing live.

Welcome to a post about another artist that folks may not realize had connections to Jerry Garcia.  In the summer of 1990, Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians led in for the Grateful Dead at several stadium shows. That led to her working with Garcia and Rob Wasserman on 2 songs three years later  - Zillionaire and American Popsicle - for the latter’s album, Trios. She then sat in with the Dead on September 20, 1993 at Madison Square Garden, and legend has it her pressence so inspired Garcia that he threw down a masterful version of Morning Dew. That guest spot also Garcia thinking about a new venture - a an improv band, and Edie Brickell signed on to be a key part of it. The band would have headed out on the road with other great musicians - Branford Marsalis, Bruce Hornsby, and Rob Wasserman were also to be part of the group - without any material, making it all up on the spot at each show. Garcia's wife at the time, Deborah Koons, put an end to any notion of a new band, so unfortunately, we never got to see what that incredibly talented group could have done on stage.

The first Telluride Bluegrass Festival was organized in 1974 by members of the Fall Creek Boys. Approximatey 1000 people attended! Since then, the festival has grown into a 4 day event, with attendance of approximately 12,000 each day. While tehe ven has promarily stayed true to its bluegrss roots, artists such as Elvis Costello, Robert Plant, Phil Lesh, Steve Winwood, John Fogerty, Bruce Hornsby, and Counting Crows, just to name a few, have all played Telluride.  This sooundboard recording captures the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band with a host of special guests at teh Festival on June 23, 1989, 3 dozen years ago today.

On September 19, 1970, at Worthy Farm between the small villages of Pilton and Pylle in the county of Somerset, six miles east of the town of Glastonbury, the T-Rex headlined the first Glastonbury Festival before a growth of 1500 people. Over 4 decades later, the Glastonbury Festival, now held in June over a 4 day period, is still going strong, with crowds a 100 times larger than those at the first concert! Artists such as Paul McCartney, Elton John, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Tom Jones, The Who, and U2 and have all headlined the festival, and we will bring you all of those and more later this month. Those 2 discs yielded tunes such as Someone Like You, Queen Of The Slipstream, When Will I Ever Learn to Live in God, These Are The Days, Whenever God Shines His Light, and Have I Told You Lately, all of which now have taken a prominent place in his vast catalog of music. This excellent audience recording captures Van on tour in support of his then newly released album, at The Point in his home country, on December 18, 1989, 35 years ago today.
