Janis Joplin entered the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1995, the year that the induction of Led Zeppelin overshadowed everyone else. Melissa Etheridge made the induction speech and performed Piece of My Heart in hinor of Janis.

This soundboard recording captures Janis in San Francisco on April 25, 1967, 59 years ago today.  Just a few weeks later, she would take the rock world by storm with her performance at the Monerey Pop Festival.

Monterey Pop - 1967-06-18 - Sunday Evening, Monterey CA (SBD)

It was the first major rock festival that attracted national attention (the Magic Mountain festival took place a week earlier to far less fanfare - go here for more on that), hosting over 200,000 people over 3 days, with 90,000 fans in attendance at its peak on Sunday night. It was the place where Jimi Hendrix and The Who made their U.S. debuts. It marked the first major public appearances by Janis Joplin and Otis Redding. It embodied the counter culture spirit of San Francisco, with almost all the acts performing for free. It was the first multi-racial and multi-genre musical event. And it will ever be synonymous with the Summer of Love. It was officially, The Monterey International Pop Music Festival, better know simply as Monterey Pop. Today in a month dedicated to festivals, we bring you a soundboard recording of the closing night on June 18, 1967, 58 years ago today. The early highlight was the US debut of The Who, who followed a set by the Buffalo Springfield. For The Who, who had been recommended for the festival by advisory board member Paul McCartney, it was the moment in which they captured the attention of fans and critics in the states. For the Springfield, it was the usual chaos, as Neil Young missed the show due to bickering with Stephen Stills, forcing the band to have David Crosby sit in. Of course, that was only the start of the fireworks that transpired on that night. Though on their home turf, the Grateful Dead had the unenviable position of having to play right after The Who's and right before the man who would become a rock god at Monterey.  Jimi Hendrix was also at the festival on the recommendation of  McCartney, who had seen Hendrix play in London. On this night, the whole world got to see what McCartney already knew. The image of Hendrix pouring lighter fluid on his guitar and burning it, is one of the most memorable in rock history. And his playing was unlike anything anyone had ever seen or heard. It was quite unfair that The Mamas and The Papas, who had been leading lights in organizing Monterey Pop, had to follow Jimi on stage. No one could have. 1960s - #3: In early 1969, after splitting from Big Brother and the Holding Company, Joplin formed a new backup group, the Kozmic Blues Band, composed of session musicians like keyboardist Stephen Ryder and saxophonist Cornelius "Snooky" Flowers, as well as former Big Brother and the Holding Company guitarist Sam Andrew and future Full Tilt Boogie Band bassist Brad Campbell. The band was influenced by the Stax-Volt R&B and soul bands of the 1960s. This FM broadcast captures Janis on tour in Europe with the Kosmic Blues Band, in Amsterdam, on April 11, 1969, 55 years ago today.

1960s - #5:  While Janis Joplin's performance at Monterey Pop, is the stuff of legends, most of the country didn't get to see it until D. A. Pennebaker's film documenting the festival was released in 1969. Joplin's first national exposure, therefore, came on July 31, 1968, when she was a guest on Dick Cavet's television show.  Just a few week's after that appearance, Joplin released teh album Cheap Thrills, which went to #1 on the Billbioard charts, a posotion it held for 8 non ocnsecutive weeks. Just  feew days before her natioan TV debut and top selling album rlease, Janis appeared at the Newport Folk Festival on July 27, 1968, 55 years ago today, as captured in this sounboard recording.  her set list included many of the tunes that helped Chaeap Thrills clinb to the top spot on the charts, including Piece of My Heart, Summertime and Ball & Chain.

Welcome to our 3rd and final dedicated to Monterey Pop. This one provides soundboard recordings from the afternoon and evening sessions from June 18, 1967, 55 years ago this very day. Here's our 2nd of 3 posts dedicated to the Monterey Pop festival. This one features soundboard recordings from the afternoon and evening sessions session from Saturday, June 17,  1967, 55 years ago this very day. This afternoon session featured a host of San Francisco bands, such as Steve Miller, Country Joe & The Fish, and Quicksilver Messenger Service. But it was Janis Joplin who stole the show with her breathtaking performance that day. For the evening session, The Byrds and The Jefferson Airplane were the 2 biggest acts on the bill, but it was Otis Redding, singing to the "love crowd" in his first major appearance in front of a predominately white audience, who turned in a perfromance for the ages. Tragically, Otis died just 6 month's later, at the age of 26.

Janis Joplin - 1970-06-28 - Toronto, Canada (SBD)

Janis Joplin was yet another artist whose released her debut album in 1967 and gained national attention thanks to a performance at Monterey Pop. Her debut disc, entitled Big Brother and the Holding Company after the band she fronted, was released in August 1967, went to #60 on the Billboard charts and produced 4 singles. It was Janis' live performances, however, not her studio work, that made her a star. Her performance with Big Brother & The Holding Company on day 2 of the Monterey Pop Festival was so powerful, that the festival organizers hastily arranged to have her and the band perform again on day 3 to ensure it was captured by D.A. Pennebaker's film crew. Janis' rebdition of Ball and Chain at Monterey played a major role in helping the band get signed to Columbia Records once the festival concluded. This soundboard recording captures Janis 3 years later in Toronto, on June 28, 1970, 47 years ago today.  The show was part of the Festival Express, a train excursion across Canada, taken by Janis along with The Grateful Dead, The Band, Delaney and Bonnie and Buddy Guy,  The artists performed concerts in 3 Canadian cities (2 other shows were cancelled) and jammed together in between shows while riding the train.  The event was documented in the film, Festival Express, released in 2003. Tragically, Janis would be dead less than 4 months later.

Monterey Pop - 1967-06-18 - Sunday Sessions, Monterey CA (SBD)

Welcome to our 3rd and final dedicated to Monterey Pop. This one covers the afternoon and evening sessions from June 18, 1967, a half century ago this very day. The afternoon featured Ravi Shankar, who of course,  taught George Harrison how to play sitar and was a spiritual influence on the Beatles' guitarist.  The early highlights of the evening session was US debut of The Who,  who followed a set by the Buffalo Springfield. For The Who, who had been recommended for the festival by advisory board member Paul McCartney, it was the moment in which they captured the attention of fans and critics in the states. For the Springfield, it was the usual chaos, as Neil Young missed the show due to bickering with Stephen Stills, forcing the band to have David Crosby sit in. Of course, that was only the start of the fireworks that transpired on that night. Though on their home turf, The Grateful Dead had the unenviable position of having to play right after The Who's US debut and right before the man who would become a rock god at Monterey.  Jimi was also at the festival on the recommendation of  McCartney, who had seen Hendrix play in London. On this night, the whole world got to see what McCartney already knew. The image of Hendrix pouring lighter fluid on his guitar and burning it, is one of the most memorable in rock history. And his playing was unlike anything anyone had ever seen or heard. It was quite unfair that The Mamas and The Papas, who had been leading lights in organizing Monterey Pop, had to follow Jimi on stage. No one could have.

Here's our 2nd of 3 posts dedicated to the Monterey Pop festival. This one features the afternoon and evening sessions session from Saturday, June 17,  1967, 50 years ago this very day. This afternoon session featured a host of San Francisco bands, such as Steve Miller, Country Joe & The Fish, and Quicksilver Messenger Service. But it was Janis Joplin who stole the show with her breathtaking performance that day. For the evening session, The Byrds and The Jefferson Airplane were the 2 biggest acts on the bill, but it was Otis Redding, singing to the "love crowd" in his first major appearance in front of a predominately white audience, who stole the show. Tragically, Otis died just 6 month's later, at the age of 26.
