Bob Dylan - 1976-05-12 - Austin, TX (SBD)

In late 1975, after releasing the album Blood On Tracks earlier in the year, Bob Dylan launched the Rolling Thunder Revue tour. Dylan recruited a host of other musicians to join him on this tour, including Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Mick Ronson, Kinky Friedman, T Bone Burnett, and Bob Neuwirth. Patti Smith was also invited to be part of the Revue, but politely declined. According to Larry Sloman, who documented the tour, "onstage it was like a carnival. After intermission, the curtain rose to an incredible sight, Bob and Joan, together again after all these years. The tour met with tremendous critical acclaim. For example, Clinton Heylin Wrote "The Rolling Thunder Revue shows remain some of the finest music Dylan ever made with a live band."  Them after releasing the album Desire in early 1976, Dylan went back on the road with the Rolling Thunder Review for a series of Spring shows.  This soundboard captures the tour in Austin on May 12, 1976, a half century ago today!  Note: this one was too big for MirrorCreator so tested a new transfer host.

Ian Hunter with Mick Ronson 1979- #1:  In March 1979, Ian Hunter released the album You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic, which was produced by his long time collaborator Mick Ronson. The album included the tunes Just Another Night and Cleveland Rocks, the videos for which would eventually get plenty of airplay on MTv. In fact, Hunter’s concert on Pier 84 in New York in 1981 would be one of the earliest concerts shown on the then fledgling network. This FM broadcast captures Hunter on tour in support of Schizophrenic, on June 12, 1979, 42 years ago today, at My Father's Place in Roslyn, NY.  Download this one, then come back on June 18 for part 2 of this Same Tour, Different Show set.

Previously on So Many Roads, we've posted several shows from the fall 1975 installment of the Rolling Thunder Revue tour. Today we post a show from the Spring leg, a soundboard recording from May 3, 1976, 43 years ago today,  in New Orleans. Dylan was accompanied by the same all star line up for this show, and all of the Spring concerts, as he was for the Fall run. Folks like Kinky Friedman, Joan Baez and Roger McGuinn took solo turns out front, while others, such as Mick Ronson and Bob Neuwirth, played supporting roles in the Rolling Thunder Review Band.  Prior to the start of the Spring shows, Dylan had released the album Desire, which went to number #1 on the Billboard charts in the US and to #3 in the UK.  The album included such classics as Hurricane, Isis and Joey, though the only tune from the disc that Dylan played on May 3 is Mozambique. While some sources say that the Sping shows lacked the spontaneity and emotion of the earlier Fall shows, the Dylan bootleg site, Bob’s Boots, indicates that this May 3 show is among the best of the April/May run of the Rolling Thunder review.

Bob Dylan - Back to Back 1975 - #1: We kick off our month of back to back concerts with the first of 2 shows from Bob Dylan's legendary Rolling Thunder tour in 1975. For the former Robert Zimmerman, 1975 was one of the most incredible years in his long storied career. In January, he released Blood On The Tracks, one of his finest albums. Then in June, he released The Basement Tapes, the legendary recordings he and The Band made at Woodstock in 1967. In October, he finished the album Desire, which was released in January, 1976. As if that wasn’t enough, Dylan decided to go on the road in late 1975, launching the Rolling Thunder Revue tour. In addition to the core band he used to produce Desire, Dylan recruited a host of other musicians to join him on this tour. Among those featured in the Revue were Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Mick Ronson, Kinky Friedman, T Bone Burnett, and Bob Neuwirth. Ian Hunter - 1979-07-07 -  Berkeley, CA (SBD)

The late Mick Ronson doesn't really get the attention he deserves as a guitarist. Folks usually forget that Ronson played with David Bowie as part of the Spiders From Mars, with Bob Dylan as part if the Rolling Thunder Review, and as part of Ian Hunter's backing band. Rolling Stone recognized him on both their 2003 and 2011 lists of the best guitarists of all time, ranking him #64 and $41, respectively. This soundboard recording captures Ronson supporting Ian Hunter in Berkeley on July 7, 1979, 38 years ago today.

1975 - About a year ago, I shared with you an amazing show from Bob Dylan's 1975 Rolling Thunder Review tour that took place in Boston on November 21 of that year.  Like most of the bootlegs from that tour, it featured only Mr. Zimmerman's set.  Well, just recently, thanks to my good friend Sterling, I came across this incredible soundboard of the Rolling Thunder Review on November 11, 1975, 39 years ago today.  This is the complete concert, including sets from The Review (sans Dylan), Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn and of course, Mr Dylan himself.  I couldn't think of a better show to post for this blog's 5th anniversary.  Enjoy and thanks for supporting So Many Roads!

In 1978, Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson teamed up to-produce Hunter’s 4th studio album entitled You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic. That disc went to #35 on the Billboard charts and yielded 2 tunes that received significant airplay on MTv, Just Another Night and Cleveland Rocks. Ten years later, the two were still working together, and this soundboard recording captures them live in San Jose on December 16. 1989, two dozen years ago today. Their set includes a cover of the Velvet Underground’s White Light White Hear. Ronson, of course, was no stranger to that song, having played guitar on David Bowie’s rendition of the tune, recorded in 197, but not released until 10 years later.
