On September 17, The Doors gave a memorable performance of Light My Fire on The Ed Sullivan Show. Before the show, network executives asked that the word “higher” be removed in favor of "better', to avoid any suggestion of drug use. While the group initially agreed, once the band hit the stage, Jim Morrison, in classic 1960s example of the counter-culture defying the establishment, left the original lyric in place. A furious Ed Sullivan canceled another six appearances that had been planned, banning the Doors from the show forever. The Doors found a far more friendly televison show about a year later, however, when the appeared on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour on December 4, 1968, 56 years ago today, as captured in this TV soundboard recording. The Smothers Brothers had become a voice for the counter culture, with their show featuring musical guests such as Joan Baez, Buffalo Springfield, Cass Elliot, Cream, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix and even Pete Seeger, who had been blackballed from television for years due to his anti-war stance. Ray Manzarek said that "The Smothers Brothers were great guys, and very controversial. They wouldn’t bow to the powers-that-be and were always poking fun at the establishment."  John Densmore commented that "The Smothers Brothers were funny and they were political. Their politics were our politics, plus they were against the Vietnam war. In fact, they got kicked off the air due to their politics. We were really proud to be on their show."

1960s - #2:  For The Doors, the year 1967 began with the release in January of their self-titled debut album. The album would steadily rise up the charts, eventually reaching the #2 position, thanks to the single Light My Fire, released in April, which would make it all the way to the top spot! In September, the band released their 2nd album, Strange Days, which went to #3 on the billboard charts. While the album didn’t yield a single as successful as Light My Fire, both People Are Strange and Love Me Two Times made it into the Billboard Top 25. Also that month, The Doors gave a memorable performance of Light My Fire on The Ed Sullivan Show. Before the September 17 show, network executives asked that the word “higher” be removed in favor of "better." While the group initially agreed, once the band hit the stage, Jim Morrison left the original lyric in place. A furious Ed Sullivan canceled another six appearances that had been planned, banning The Doors from the show forever.  Two top 5 albums, a number 1 single, a legnedary if notorious appearance of Ed Sullivan - what more could you expect from a band's debut year.  How about  a concert at a high school?  The band was supposed to play at Western Connecticut State University, but due to construction at the college's auditorium, the show was moved to Danbury High.  Some 2,000 people packed into the 1,200 seat high school auditorium to hear The Doors, with the school principle having to remind folks not to smoke!  You can read more about that noght here.  Ths soundboard recording  - please note, its not perfect - captures that hard to believe night in Danbury on October 11, 1967, 57 years ago today.

The Doors - 1970-08-21 - Bakersfield, CA (SBD) 

Some sources claim that The Doors turned down playing at Woodstock because Jim Morrison hated performing out doors. In 1986, however, Ray Manzarek, explained that The Doors "never played at Woodstock because we were stupid and turned it down. We thought it would be a second class repeat of Monterey Pop Festival." 

About 6 months after Woodtsock, on February 1, 1970, The Doors released their 5th studio album, Morrison Hotel, a return to the band’s roots after the experimental nature of their previous disc, Soft Parade. The band’s approach seemed to work, as Morrison Hotel reached #4 on the Billboard charts. The album also received positive critical reviews. For example, Dave Marsh, the editor of Creem magazine, wrote that the album was: "the most horrifying rock and roll I have ever heard. When they're good, they're simply unbeatable. I know this is the best record I've listened to ... so far.” While the album did not yield any top 40 singles, it did include tunes that would become staples of FM radio play, including Roadhouse Blues, Waiting For The Sun and Peace Frog. This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in support of the album on August 21, 1970, 54 years ago today.

1993 Rock  & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1993-01-12 - Los Angeles, CA (TV SBD)

The 1993 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, the first one not held in New York at the Waldorf Astoria, could be described by borrowing from Charles Dickens - "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. "  On the bright side, all 3 members of Cream - Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce - showed up and played together for the first time since 1968. In addition, the suriving members of The Doors were all present, and played 3 songs with Eddie Vedder on vocals.  On the downside, Van Morrison skipped the ceremony, having Robbie Robertson accept the homor on his behalf, while the Counting Crows were recruited to play Caravan.  Far worse, while all 4 members of Creedence were in attendance for their induction, John Foegerty refused to play with them, continuing the 20 year old feud that effectively destroyed the band.  Instead, he was backed by Bruce Springsteen and Robbie Robertson on 3 CCR tunes.

While the album didn’t yield a single as successful as Light My Fire, both People Are Strange and Love Me Two Times made it into the Billboard Top 25. The 2 day Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival, which bad hosted about 40,000 fans, took place on June 10 a d 11 and in addition to The Doors, featured Jrfferson Airplane, The Grassroots, Canned heat, The Byrds, The 5th Domension and Steve Miller, just to name a few. Unlike Monterey Pop, which was professionally recorded and filmed, very little audio or video can be found of the Fantasy Faoir festiva; This audio of Break On Through, ripped from a short video clipo from the The Door's performance on day 1 of the festival, on June 10, 1967, 55 years ago today, is all that can be found of their 4 song set.

1967 - Few television appearances by a rock band are as famous as when The Doors performed Light My Fire on the Ed Sullivan Show on September 17, 1967. Before the show, network executives asked that the word “higher” be removed in favor of "better', to avoid any suggestion of drug use. While the group initially agreed, once the band hit the stage, Jim Morrison, in classic 1960s example of the counter-culture defying the establishment, left the original lyric in place. A furious Ed Sullivan canceled another six appearances that had been planned, banning The Doors from the show forever!  That wasn't the only TV appearance, however, by the Doors that historic year.  For example, in March and June they appeared on Clay Cole's Diskotek on WPIX Channel 11 in New York.  In May, they performed on Boss City on KHJ-TV Channel 9 in Los Angeles. In July, they made an an appearance on American Bandstand, while in September they performed on Murray The K's Aquarian Age.  This TV soundboard recording captures yet another TV appearance by The Doors that year, on the Johnathon Winters' Show on December 27, 1967, 54 years ago today.

1960s - #6: In the mid 1960s, one of the most prominent DJs in New York City was Murray Kaufman, better known as Murray The K.  He was an early ardent supporter of the Beatles, and one was one of the first DJs to greet and interview them when they arrived in America. He even  nicknamed himself the 5th Beatle! He moved to FM radio in the late 1960s and helped pioneer free form radio.  He also launched a TV program, called Murray The K In New York, featuring up and coming rock artists.This soundbaord recording captures his September 22, 1967 show, from 54 years ago today, featuring The Doors, who had burst on the scene earlier that year with their debut album and the single Light My Fire. By the way, this TV appearance took place just 5 days after the legendary Ed Sullivan show where the Doors also performed Light My Fire.  Jim Morrison, against Sullivan's, sang the line "we couldn't get much higher", resulting in Ed canceling 6 other scheduled appearances!

We thought it would be a second class repeat of Monterry Pop Festival."

Perhaps missing Woodstock inspired the band to make up for their mistake by playing The Isle of Wight Festival in 1970. For 3 straight years, from 1968 to 1970, The Isle of Wight, a small island just off the south east coast of England, was the site of major rock festivals attracting some of the biggest names in rock music.  The 1968 festival was headlined by The Jefferson Airplane while the 1969 concert featured Bob Dylan and The Who.  The 1970 festival, however, has garnered the most attention, however, for two reasons.  First, Jimi Hendrix headlined the show, which in turn attracted additional acts such as Jethro Tull, Ten Years After, Chicago, The Doors, The Who, ELP, The Moody Blues, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, and Miles Davis.  Second, the event attracted over 600,000 people, making it the largest concert ever held until that point.  The massive nature of the event also meant it would be the last such show on the Isle of Wight for over 32 years. In 1971 the British Parliament passed the "Isle of Wight Act" preventing gatherings of more than 5,000 people on the island without a special license.  The 1970 Festival lasted from August 27th to August 30th, with the biggest names performing on the last 2 days.  For more details on the festival, go here. This soundboard recording captures The Doors' set at the Isle of Wight on August 29, 1970, 49 years ago today.  The whole show was played in almost total darkness as Jim Morrison refused to have spotlights on the ban (maybe really didn't like playing outdoors!!) One other note about this concert.First, the date of this show is often listed as either August 30 or 31, but my research seems to indicate that August 29 is correct.

The Doors - 1969-05-23 - New York, NY (SBD)

In late April 1969, PBS spent 2 days filming The Doors for a television special entitled “A Profile of Jim Morrison and The Doors - On and Off Stage”. On April 28, the band was filmed performing 6 songs, including the only known complete live recording of the Soft Parade. The next day, an interview between Richard Goldstein and the Doors was recorded, during which in which Jim attempted to read poetry from his collection entitled from The Lords and The New Creatures. Later, on May 13, PBS filmed a panel discussion about the band that included Goldstein, Patricia Kennealy, William 'Rosko' Mercer from WNEW-FM, and Alfred G. Aronowitz. In between all that filming, a “little” incident occurred in Miami on March 1. During a concert that night, a very drunk and antagonistic Jim Morrison, who spent a good deal of the show taunting the audience and security, was arrested for allegedly exposing his private parts. Whether he did or didn’t is subject to debate until this very day. Despite the incident, PBS did not pull the show, broadcasting it on WNET in NY on May 23, 1969, a half century ago today. On September 18, 1968, a half century ago today, The Doors were booked to perform a mini concert for Television-Byen in Copenhagen, Denmark. For a brief moment, whether The Doors would perform that show, or any other show for that matter, was in doubt as a few days earlier, on September 15, Jim Morrison had over dosed after spending a day in Amsterdam, ingesting every drug handed to him by passer-byes as he the rest of The Doors and Thh Jefferson Airplane, who were on tour with them, walked the streets. Later that day, Morrison collapsed on stage during the Airplane's set, and was rushed to a local hospital.  The rest of The Doors played their set, with Ray Manzarek filling in on vocals. Given Morrison's condition, no one was quite sure how the show in Copenhagen would go, but the band was braced for disaster.  Instead, they turned in a remarkable performance, as captured in this soundboard recording. While Jim was clearly tired from his ordeal, starting the concert sitting on a stool, by the end he was on his feet, fully engaged and giving every ounce of strength to the show.

The Doors were inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 1993, along with Cream, Etta James, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Ruth Brown, Van Morrison and Sly & the Family Stone. Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam not only made the induction speech, but also joined the surviving members of the band to handle lead vocals on a raucous version of Roadhouse Blues.

Now, sometimes in writing these posts, it takes me a while to come up with an interesting story line related to the concert or the band in question. Other times, however, I get really lucky and the post almost writes itself. This is one of those lucky times! The Doors performance at the Toronto Rock & Roll Festival on September 13, 1969, 46 years ago today, has so many story lines associated with it that I may not have enough room or time to write about them all. First off, The Doors, who closed the festival, went on stage at about 2 am, and were the only band that refused to be filmed for a documentary called Sweet Toronto. Second, this was the same festival where John Lennon and The Plastic One Band played a set, with Eric Clapton on guitar. Yoko was so unpopular at the time that her performance was met with a hail of boo's! The subsequent album that Lennon released, called Live Peace in Toronto 1969, was the first live album released by any Beatle, either as a group or separately. Finally, this performance by The Doors was for years incorrectly listed as being from Mexico. In fact, if you look below, you'll not only find the correct artwork showing this concert taking place in Toronto, but also artwork billing this performance as Mexican Caravan. This HQ Audience recording sounds great and is definitely worth having in your collection, regardless of whether it took place north or south of the US border!

Here’s another “Same Tour, Different Show” entry that reflects a different time in the music world, when bands played 2 shows in one night! On September 2, 1968, The Doors flew out of embark on a 17 day tour of Europe flying out of Kennedy International Airport in Queens, NY to launch their first European tour. The band’s 3rd album, Waiting for The Sun, which had been released in July had gone to #1 on the US charts, as did the single, Hello I Love You. This soundboard recording captures the early show in Stockholm, Sweden on the last night of the tour on September 20, 1968, 46 years ago today. The album would steadily rise up the charts, eventually reaching the #2 position, thanks to the single Light My Fire, released in April, which would make it all the way to the top spot! In September, the band released their 2nd album, Strange Days, which went to #3 on the billboard charts. While the album didn’t yield a single as successful as Light My Fire, both People Are Strange and Love Me Two Times made it into the Billboard Top 25. Also that month, The Doors gave a memorable performance of Light My Fire on The Ed Sullivan Show. Before the September 17 show, network executives asked that the word “higher” be removed in favor of "better." While the group initially agreed, once the band hit the stage, Jim Morrison left the original lyric in place. A furious Ed Sullivan canceled another six appearances that had been planned, banning The Doors from the show forever. Controversy continued to follow the band in December, when Morrison was arrested on December 9, 1967, during a concert in New Haven, becoming the first rock artist ever to be arrested onstage during a performance. A few weeks later, The Doors brought a successful but volatile year to a close with a series of performances at the Shrine Auditorium and Winterland. The Doors - 1968-09-06 - London, UK (SBD) 

In April 1968, The Doors released their 3rd album, Waiting For The Sun, which became their first disc to go to #1 on the Billboard charts. The album yielded the single Hello I Love You, which also reached the top spot on the charts. Waiting For The Sun also became the band’s first album to chart in the UK. The Doors played their first European shows in September 1968, including 2 shows each on September 6 and 7 at The Roundhouse in London. The Doors/Grateful Dead Connection 

Of all the bands we are posting this month, The Doors may have the most tenuous connection to the Grateful Dead. According to Deadbase, the Doors and The Grateful Dead appeared on the same bill on 5 occasions, 3 times at The Fillmore in San Francisco in January 1967, a show in Santa Barbara in April 1967 and a festival in San Jose in May 1968. Music from The Doors and The Dead’s Mickey Hart and Bill Kretuzman both appeared on the soundtrack for the movie Apocalypse Now. Several internet sources indicate that Jerry Garcia was not too fond of Jim Morrison, which could explain the lack of connections between the 2 bands.

The band’s approach seemed to work, as Morrison Hotel reached #4 on the Billboard charts. The album also received positive critical reviews. For example, Dave Marsh, the editor of Creem magazine, wrote that the album was: "the most horrifying rock and roll I have ever heard. When they're good, they're simply unbeatable. I know this is the best record I've listened to ... so far.” While the album did not yield any top 40 singles, it did include tunes that would become staples of FM radio play, including Roadhouse Blues, Waiting For The Sun and Peace Frog. This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in support of the album on August 21, 1970, 43 years ago today.
