Big Man On Campus - #4: We finish our Four Of A kind dedicated to rock concerts on college campuses with this soundboard recording of Squeeze at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ on April 29, 1987, 31 years ago today. The band, which had reformed just 2 years earlier, was on tour in advance of the album Babylon And On, which would be released in September. The disc would spawn a surpise hit in the US, the tune Hourglass which went to #15 in the Billboard charts. How big a surprise was it?  wel, while the set list for this concert includes 3 songs from Babylon And On - The Prisoner, Trust Me To Open My Mouth and Striking Matches - Hourglass is nowhere to be found!

Land Down Under #4:  In Spring of 1979, Bob Marley launched the Babylon by Bus Tour in support of the album by the same name. The tour also was designed to bring Marley and reggae music to Asia and Oceania. The tour began in Japan on April 5 1979, and ended in Honolulu, Hawaii, on May 6. 1979. The tour was supposed to have started with with two shows in Ivory Coast in mid-March, but both concerts had been cancelled for unknown reasons. This soundboard recording captures Marley on the 2nd leg of the tour,in Australia, on April 27, 1979, 39 years ago today.

Dire Straits – 1986-04-26 – Sydney, Australia (SBD)

Land Down Under #3: On May 13, 1985, Dire Straits released their 5th studio album, the now legendary, Brothers In Arms. The disc became the first not only to sell one million copies in the CD format but also to outsell its vinyl version. Brothers in Arms would spend nine weeks at number 1 on the US Charts, and ten in that slot on UK charts. The album produced 3 top 20 singles in the US – So Far Away at #19, Walk of Life at #7 and the monster track, Money For Nothing, which went to number 1. Money For Nothing received extensive exposure on MTV, and was a highlight of the Dire Straits set at Live Aid, when Sting joined the band to reprise the backing vocals he had provided on the album version of the tune. Brothers In Arms would win two Grammy Awards in 1986 and also won Best British Album at the 1987 Brit Awards. The band toured extensively in support of the album playing over 247 shows in 100 cities during 1985 and 1986. This soundboard recording captures Dire Straits on April 26, 1986, 32 years ago today, on the last night of the tour in Sydney, Australia. Macca in Tokyo 2017 - #1: In April 2017, Paul McCartney brought his One To One Tour to Japan for what was originally scheduled to be a 3 show stint at the Tokyo Dome. Sir Paul then added a 4th show prior to the original 3, but this one was scheduled at a very special venue, the legendary Budokan Hall.  Originally built to host the judo competition at the 1964 Summer Olympics, Tokyo’s Budokan eventually became one of the most famous rock and roll venues in the world.The Beatles, of course had been the first band to ever play at Budokan when they did 3 shows at the venue during their final tour in 1966. Budokan became a household name in the late 1970s, when Cheap Trick and Bob Dylan released live albums recorded at the venue. Over 20 other bands have since released albums “live from Budokan.” Of course, the arena’s popularity has also become one of rock’s running jokes, with John Hiatt going so far as to release an album entitled Hiatt Comes Alive at Budokan? that actually was recorded in the US! Finally, over a year later, the 3rd single from the disc, All I Wanna Do became a surprise smash hit, climbing to number 2 on the Billboard charts and carrying the album to the number 3 spot. By 1995, therefore, Sheryl was atop the rock world, the latest female artist to ascend to the throne of Queen of Rock. Big Man On Campus - #3: We continue our Big Man On Campus Four Of A kind with this Allman Brothers soundboard from the University of Miami at Ohio from April 21, 1995, 23 years ago today.  The Allmans were no stranger to playing shows on college campuses.  Back in 1971, for example, they played 4 shows Sate University of New York at Stonybrook on  April 28, July 10, July 26 and September 19. Can you imagine 4 opportunities to see Duane, Greg and the entire Allman's contingent in just 6 months at a small college campus right outside New York City? Capitol Theatre - #4:  As mentioned in an earlier post in this Capitol Theater Four Of A Kind, John Scher's status as a promoter enabled him to get rock's biggest acts to play his 3,200 seat theater even when they were selling out major arenas. A perfect example of this can be found during the Allman Brother's 1979 tour. I saw the band at Madison Square Garden on July 21, 1979.  And where were they the night before, on July 20, 1979, 39 years ago today.  Well, where else but the Capitol in Passaic, as captured in this soundboard recording.

Bad Luck is notable, however, for featuring a host of guests, including Jackson Browne, Glenn Frey, Linda Ronstadt, Waddy Wachtel and Joe Walsh, not to mention a tune, Jeannie Needs a Shooter, written with Bruce Springsteen. The Pretenders - 1984-04-18 - Upper Darby, PA (SBD)

Tower Theater - #3: During 1982 and 1983, The Pretenders were a band in crisis. Original members James Honeyman-Scott and Peter Fardon both died of drug over doses during that time.. Undeterred by these twin tragedies, Chrissie Hynde, along with the only other original band member Martin Chambers, soldiered on. Hynde first recruited Billy Bremmer, Tony Butler, and Paul Carrack to temporarily fill in, then later replaced them with new full time band members Rob McIntosh, Malcolm Foster and Rupert Black (Black did not work with the band in the recording studio but did accompany them on tour). Despite the turmoil, The Pretenders produced some of their finest work during that period. The album, Learning To Crawl, released in January 1984, went to number 5 on the Billboard charts. The disc spawned 5 singles, Back on The Chain Gang, My City Was Gone, Middle of The Road, Show Me and Thin Line Between Love And Hate, and also included tunes which became staples on FM Rock radio, such as Time The Avenger and 2000 Miles. Big Man On Campus - #2: We continue our look at rock on college campuses with this soundboard matrix recording of the Grateful Dead from April 17, 1971, 47 years ago today, from Princeton University.Why this show? Well, I attended Princeton, and I'm always looking to plug my alma mater. The Dead played Dillon Gym, which had been built in 1947 to house the school’s athletic facilities. In 1969, however, Jadwin Gym opened, supplanting Dillon as the home of the Princeton Tiger’s basketball team. Dillon continues to serve as the home for the school volley ball and wrestling teams, as well as housing a swimming pool, a fitness center and squash courts. Dillon also serves as a 3200 seat concert hall. In addition to the Dead, Simon & Garfunkel, James Taylor, the Lovin’ Spoonful, Steppenwolf, Frank Zappa, and Jackson Browne all played Dillon in the 1970s. Here’s what The Princeton Alumni Weekly said of the Dead’s show: “The Grateful Dead’s invasion of Dillon on April 17, 1971 — Hell’s Angels motorcycle gang in tow — is famous among devotees for a quintessential performance of “Good Lovin’ ” by band member Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, then suffering from what would be fatal cirrhosis. 'The concert was expensive, $10,000,' says Lockwood, a faithful Deadhead who treasures a cassette recording he made that night. The band played until 'well past midnight,' Lockwood recalls, and 'a substantial part of the audience, which was all students, was stoned out of their minds.' Concertgoers passed ­marijuana joints down the rows of seats, he says. According to legend, when a Princeton proctor demanded that shaggy singer Jerry Garcia extinguish his joint, Garcia snarled, 'I’ll never play here again.' The Alarm - 1988-04-16 - Upper Darby, PA (FM)

Tower Theatre - #2:  When they released of their self titled debut album in July 1983, and served as the lead in for U2 that same summer, The Alarm were quickly heralded as perhaps the next "big thing".  The similarities in their style to that io U2 brought on the inevitable comparisons, which may have been simply unfair to a band just starting out.  In any event, The Alarm never quite reached the heights U2 did, but they most certainly produced some fine tunes, including The Stand, 68 Guns and Rain In The Summertime (my favorite), just to name a few.  This FM broadcast captures The Alarm on tour 5 years after their debut, on at the legendary Tower Theater on April 16, 1988, 3 decades ago today,  Download this one, then come back on April8 and 22 for the rest of this Tower Theater Four Of A Kind.

Land Down Under #1: Today we start a four of a kind set of concerts from Australia! When Bob Dylan embarked on a world tour in 1966, he was a changed man. Gone were the James Dean look and folkie acoustic music. In its place, was fashion straight from Carnaby Street in London, a green hounds tooth skin tight suit with handmade Beatle boots. More significantly, the music was now electric, with Dylan backed by the Hawks, later better known as the Band. The Hawks had also backed Dylan on the immortal album Blonde on Blonde, which was released in May 1966, during this tour. Blonde on Blonde was one of the first double albums in rock history and featured such songs as Rainy Day Women #12 & 35, Most Likely You Go Your Way, Stuck Inside of Memphis and Temporary Like Achilles. This soundboard, from April 13, 1966 in Sydney, 52 years ago this very day,, therefore, captures Dylan at a pivotal moment in in his career. Two months after the 1966 tour ended, he suffered his famous motorcycle injury, after which he retired to Woodstock for several years, recording the legendary Basement Tapes. Big Man On Campus - #1:  Back in the 20th century, especially from 1960 to 1990, rock concerts flourished on college campuses. In my 4 years at Princeton, we hosted concerts by Elvis Costello, David Johansen, The Drifters, ELP, Southside Johnny and Bruce Springsteen, just to name a few. Heck, while running the school newspaper, I came close to getting the Grateful Dead to play Jadwin Gym, only to have the ban on concerts after the Springsteen show damaged the gym floor get in the way.  Well that, and Jerry Garcia's vow never to play the university again, which will cover in our 2nd post in this Four Of A Kind on April 17. In any event, I'm not quite sure what the college music scene is like today (I'll learn soon  when my twin boys go off to Villanova in the fall) but in honor of those glory days of the past, we;re bringing up 4 shows that took place on campus as part of Four Of A kind we affectionately call Big Man On Campus! Jerry Garcia Band- 1982-04-10 - Capitol Theatre, Passaic NJ (SBD)

Capitol Theater - #2: John Scher, the man who owned the Capitol Theater, was also the band's tour manager for the East Coast.  As a result, the Dead and Jerry played the 320 seat theater long after they had become stars capable of selling out 20,0o0 seat arenas and 50,000 seat stadiums. For Garcia, that close relationship paid off in more ways than one, as Scher once bailed him out of jail when he was posted for possession of marijuana.  This soundboard recording captures Jerry at the Capitol on April 10, 1982, 2 dozen years ago today, doing 2 very rare acoustic shows!  Download this one, the come back on on April 18 and 20 for parts 3 and 4 of the Capitol Theatre Four Of A Kind.
