In October 1990, Van Morrison released his 20th studio album, entitle Enlightenment.  The disc went to #62 on the Billboard Album Charts in the US, and climbed all the way to #5 on the British charts. Reviews were strong with Rolling Stone giving the album 4 stars and Robert Christgau grading it a B+. This FM broadcast captures Van The Man in the Netherlands on tour in support of Enlightenment on March 31, 1991, 29 years ago today.

As the 20th century segued into the 21st, Jimmy Buffett had become far more than a musician. He was an entire industry. Under the Margaritaville brand name, he had launched stores, restaurants, liquors and record companies; just to name a few of his ventures. This FM broadcast from march 30, 2017, 3 years ago today, exemplifies just how Buffett has blended his music with his business ventures. The show, broadcast on his Radio Margaritaville Station on Sirius XM radio, takes place at the newly opened Margaritaville Cafe in Hollywood. Only thing left to do is open up a Landshark while you listen!

April's Theme At So Many Roads

In April, our the will be the 1970s. Every post in April will feature a concert from 1970 to 1979! 

Why the 1970s? Well, the decade was one marked by a host of transitions in rock music. The Beatles broke up, and Elvis Presley left us way too soon. The Stones did some of their finest work early in the 1970's, only to fall prey to the excesses of the times, before rebounding near the end of the decade. Some stalwarts of the 1960s, such as the Grateful Dead and CSNY, took extended time off in the 1970s. Other Woodstock era groups underwent a metamorphosis, emerging in a new form. For example, the Jefferson Airplane became the Starship, while the Byrds broke up but reemerged as McGuinn, Clark and Hillman. Bob Dylan underwent his own series of dramatic changes, producing masterpieces such as Desire and Blood on Tracks, and disasters such as Street Legal, then converting to Christianity and recording Slow Train Coming. Led Zeppelin became the biggest band in the world, paving the way for the rise of heavy metal. New genres of rock emerged, such as punk, new wave, progressive rock and glam rock. Bruce Springsteen brought the Jersey Rock scene to national prominence. Singer/song writers such as Billy Joel, Elton John and James Taylor took center stage on the rock scene. Artists such as Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles created a highly polished sound that would come to be known as album oriented rock. Multi-platinum mega albums, such as Frampton Comes Alive, Hotel California and Rumours ruled the charts. And everybody seemed to play live at Budokan. Such were the 1970's, and you'll get a taste of all of it in March here at So Many Roads!

In 2015, as part of the Grateful Dead's 50th anniversary celebration, Phil Lesh played a series of shows dedicated to each year in the band's long, storied history. This webcast captures Phil & Friends in San Rafael on March 29, 2015, 5 years ago today, playing a concert celebrating 1972 by recreating  the Dead's set list from December 10, 1972 at Winterland in San Francisco.

Nobody Told Me There'd Be Days Like These - Please Stay Safe

To quote John Lennon - "nobody told me there'd be days like these".  It's been 2 weeks since we picked our twin boys up from college as the university sent everyone home, with all classes to be conducted on line for the rest of the semester.  That same day, my employer advised us to begin working from home on Monday. So, since March 14, the 4 of us - myself, my wife and my boys - have been home, practicing social distancing, only going out to walk the dogs and buy essentials.  All our favorite restaurants are closed.  The roads and streets are empty.  The lack of in person contact with any human beings other than each other is astonishing.

The good news - we're healthy, as are all our close family and friends.  And we know, that with a little sacrifice for several weeks, we will turn the tide of this pandemic.  This too shall pass.

To all the folks who have been loyal followers of So Many Roads, I hope you are staying safe. And I hope that fact we keep posting music is helping you through these troubled times.  To quote Jerry Garcia - "If you get confused (or lonely, or distressed, or upset, or fearful or whatever feeling troubles you), listen to the music play.

In late 1999, Sting released his 6th album, giving him one more solo disc than he had studio albums with the Police. That album, Brand New Day, hit the top 10 in both the US and UK, and went triple platinum. The album featured numerous guest artists, including James Taylor, Branford Marsalis, and Stevie Wonder, as well as a host of string players conduced by Dave Hartley. In 2000, Sting won 2 Grammy awards for Brand New Day. He also toured extensively in support of the album, launching a world tour on October 14, 1999 that continued until July 29, 2001. This FM broadcast captures Sting during that tour, in London on March 28, 2000, 20 years ago today,

Grateful Dead - 1972-03-27 - New York, NY (SBD)

For the Grateful Dead, the year 1972 would be a transitional one, marked by some incredible high points but marred by sadness. The band would integrate new keyboardist Keith Godchaux (who joined in late 1971) and his wife, vocalist Donna Jean, into the band. The Dead would travel to Europe, a legendary venture originally marked by the triple album, Europe 72, and later commemorated by the official release of every show from that tour. On August 27, 1972, the band would play a show at Veneta, OR which Deadheads rank along with the May 8, 1977 Cornell show as one for the ages. Alcohol abuse finally caught up with founding member and organist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, who played his last show with the band on July 17, 1972, and eventually passed away in March 1973, another rocker whose lifestyle cost him his life at age 27. With Pigpen departing the band, the Dead lost some of their bluesy roots. The band began experimenting with some jazz influenced material, as evident on the album Wake of the Flood released the following year. As many of you know, 1973 and 1974 are often considered (along with 1977) as the Dead's peak, but 1972 set the stage. The soundboard recording captures the Dead during a legendary run of shows at the Academy Of Music in New York, on March 27, 1972, 4 dozen years ago today.  Both the show from the day before, March 26 and the day after, March 28, at the same venue have been officially released, so you know that the band was in peak form!

Elvis Presley & Frank Sinatra - 1960-03-26 - Miami FL (TV SBD)

On March 26, 1960, 6 decades ago this very day, the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami was the site of the taping of what was hoped to be an extraordinary television special. Elvis Presley, fresh put of the Army, was in Miami, to work with Frank Sinatra on a television special entitled The Frank Sinatra Timex Show: Welcome Home Elvis.  It would be Elvis's first TV appearance since January 1957, and his first in front of any live audience since a concert in Hawaii in November of that year. This soundboard regrinding captures that taping, which was aired on ABC Television on May 12, 1960. While all involved hoped this would be an historic TV event, reviews for the show were lukewarm to say the least. Gov't Mule - 2000-03-25 - Macon, GA (SBD) 

For Gov't Mule, the year 2000 began on a high note, with the release of their 3rd studio album (and 5th album in total since their debut in 1995, including 2 live discs), entitled Life Before Insanity. The disc was a critical success, with Michael B. Smith of Allmusic giving it a 4 star rating, writing that "the Mule has recorded what by all accounts seems to be their most creative and intelligent studio album to date." In addition, critic Marc Greilsamer noted that the band "managed to craft a diverse and hardy 74-minute album, using a variety of moods, structures, textures, and time signatures, without ever really straying from their robust core sound." Unfortunately, the band would suffer a horrible loss that summer, when founding member and bass player Allen Woody was found dead in New York City on August 26th. This soundboard recording captures the band between triumph and tragedy, in Macon on March 25, 2000, 2 decades ago today.

SNACK Benefit Concert - 1975-03-23 - San Francisco, CA (FM)

In 1975, legendary promoter Bill Graham, known for his shows at venues such as Winterland and The Fillmores, undertook his first large-scale outdoor stadium concert. On March 23, 1975, 45 years ago today, he presented the SNACK Benefit Concert at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. SNACK was an an acronym for Students Need Athletics, Culture and Kicks. At the time, budget cuts had almost completely wiped out all after-school activities in San Francisco’s public school system. Graham went to bat for the kids, and recruited a host of rock legends to help him. Billed as Jerry Garcia and Friends, The Grateful Dead opened the show, one of only 4 concerts they played that year. Tower Of Power, Santana, The Doobie Brothers, Jefferson Starship and Joan Baez also were also on the bill. The show closed with a set from Neil Young and Bob Dylan, backed by members of the Band. Not sure if Neil was sitting in with Bob and The Band, or the other way around, but either way, this FM broadcast of the show is a must have for your collection.

In 1978 the midst of the punk rock revolution he helped inspire, Lou Reed released the album Street Hassle, a disc described as raw, wounded and unapologetic.  Most of the early punk records could have been described in the same terms. Yet, at the time, Reed had little if any use for the punk scene. He was quoted as saying  "I'm too literate to be into punk rock . . . The whole CBGB's, new Max's thing that every one's into and what's going on in London—you don't seriously think I'm responsible for what's mostly rubbish?" Reed's comments show just how splintered rock and roll had become as the decade of the 1970s wound to a close. This soundboard recording captures Reed about a month after the release of Street Hassle, at the Old Waldorf Theater in San Francisco on March 22, 1978, 42 years ago today. Download this one to hear a veteran who could hold his own with the new generation of angry young rockers who were coming of age at the time.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - 2000-03-21 - Philadelphia PA (SBD)

When CSNY concluded their "Reunion Tour" at Wembley Stadium in late 1974, probably no one would have guessed that the foursome would not tour again for over 25 years.  In that time, the 4 band members worked together in various configurations (most notably the CSN trio) and even appeared together for special events such as Live Aid in 1985, but a full CSNY tour would not take place until just about the turn of the century. Needless to say, therefore, the announcement of the CSNY2K tour, taking its name from the way overblown Y2K computer scare, was a major event and tickets sold out in a matter of minutes once they went on sale.  I was fortunate enough to get 2 for so the April 9, 2000 show at the Continental Arena in NJ.  CSNY did not disappoint, playing 3 sets, 2 electric sandwiching an acoustic one, that included all their classics, as well as solo material, Buffalo Springfield tunes and even a nod to Crosby's days with the Byrds, when the band broke out 8 Miles High!  While I haven't found a bootleg of that yet, I do have this soundboard recording from the March 21 show in Philadelphia, 2 decades ago this very day!

On March 5, 2012, Bruce Springsteen released his 17th studio album, entitled Wrecking Ball, which would eventually climb to #1 on the Billboard charts.  Six days later he launched a world tour that would run until September 2013.  The tour would encompass 133 shows, take Bruce and the E-street Band to 4 continents, and gross over $340 million. The tour was the first without Clarence Clemons, who passed away in 2011.  Jake Clemons, Clarence's nephew, took over for his uncle on saxophone. This IEM recording captures night 2 of the tour, of March 19, 2012, 8 years ago today.

In the early 1990s, the Gin Blossoms had a string of chart successes with songs such as Hey Jealousy, Found Out About You, Allison Road and Follow You Down, Some of that success was overshadowed, however, by the suicide of band founder, Doug Hopkins, who had been dismissed from the group right before they made it big due to his issues with alcohol. Tensions led to the band deciding to disband in 1997, though they would eventually reform. This soundboard recording captures them about a year before that break up, in Pittsburgh on March 181,1996, 2 dozen years ago today.

Simon & Garfunkel - 1967-03-17 - Manchester, UK (SBD)

On March 17, 1967, 53 years ago today, the night before they officially launched their first European tour, Simon & Garfunkel recorded a show which would be broadcast on Granada TV in May. The set, as captured in this soundboard recording featured tunes from their 2 1966 Billboard Top 20 1966 albums, Sounds Of Silence and Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme.  The tour was a tremendous success for the duo, drawing rave reviews, such as this one from Nick Jones of Melody Maker wrote ‘Two people, one guitar, gave a concert of overwhelming beauty, compassion, and entertainment… Paul Simon is mainly responsible for the songwriting, and his fiery guitar playing makes enough sound to be a complete backing group. But they don’t need one. Lean, blond Garfunkel stands rather shyly in the gloom as Paul gradually builds up rapport with the audience, slowly, delightfully nervously, breaking ice that must be broken for everyone to enjoy themselves. This is done mainly with their songs – beautiful harmonies, words biting home, guitar passages punching behind the lyric, driving, and falling."

Peter Frampton - 2016-03-16 - Carmel By The Sea, CA (Webcast)

The 1976 album Frampton Come's Alive came from out of nowhere to take the music world by storm. With songs such as Baby I Love Your Way, Show Me the Way, and the mammoth 14 minute long, Do You Feel Like We Do, which featured Frampton's distinctive talk box guitar, Frampton Comes Alive climbed to the top of the Billboard Charts, sold over 6 million copies, and was voted album of the years by readers of Rolling Stone. The album was so popular that it was still in the #14 position in the charts at the end of 1977, almost 2 years after its release. The disc that came to define rock and roll in the mid 1970's. FM rock stations began to play more album oriented rock (AOR), as Frampton's album and other similar work came to be called. Other bands attempted to copy Frampton Comes Alive, but unfortunately the results were usually excessive, over produced, and downright boring. Other rebelled against the AOR sound and movements such as disco, punk and new wave emerged. All that, from 1 album. This FM Broadcast captures The Animals in Paris on March 15, 1966, 54 years ago today, and also features bonus tracks from shows in that city from 1964 and 1965. All told, these recordings capture most of the band’s classic singles. From 1964 to 1966, the Animals scored 6 top 20 singles on the US Billboard charts - House of The Rising Sun (#1), I’m Crying (#19), Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood (#15), We Gotta Get Out Of This Place (#13), Don't Bring Me Down (#12), See See Rider (#10) (Note - It’s My Life, another classic, reached #23 on the Billboard charts), In 1967, rebilled as Eric Burdon and The Animals, they would score 3 more top 20 tunes - When I Was Young (#15) , Monterey (also #15) and San Franciscan Nights (#9). They’d crack the top 20 one last time in 1968 with Sky Pilot at #14. Less than a year later, The Animals disbanded and Burdon had joined War.

Van Morrison - 1974-03-14 - Cambridge, MA (FM)

On January 11, 1974, Van Morrison launched A US tour that would run until March 16. At just about that same moment, Van released the classic live album It's Too Late Too Stop Now which featured his historic 1973 tour backed by the 11 piece Caledonia Soul Orchestra. Of course, in typical Van fashion, he had disbanded that group and was playing with a new assortment of musicians for this 1974 tour. He was also testing out material he had written during a 3 week vacation in Belfast back in October 1973, songs which would eventually comprise the album Veedon Fleece, released later in 1974. So this show from Cambridge from March 15, 1974, 46  years ago today, finds Van in a period of flux, something he too must have released, as his 1977 album follow up to Veedion Fleece would be entitled A Period of Transition!  Note - the vocals are a tad bit distant on this one, but not much corculated from Van the Man from 1974, so we had to post it!

At about the same time Elvis Presley left this earth for Rock & Roll heaven, another Elvis began his rise to prominence. One of the angry young men of the punk rock and new wave movement, Elvis Costello released his first album, My Aim Is True in July 1977 in the UK, however, due to distribution issues, the disc would not be released in the US until March 1978. That didn't stop Cosello from developing a following in the US. In December 1977, he was asked to appear on Saturday Night Live as a replacement for the Sex Pistols. Scheduled to perform Less Than Zero, Elvis stopped after just a few bars, then launched into Radio Radio, a song he had been specifically asked not to play. He cemented his reputation as a rebellious punk rocker with the incident, but also also earned a 10 year ban from the show! This FM broadcast captures Costello a few months after that incident, back in London, on March, 13, 1978, 42 years ago today.

Rolling Stones - 2003-03-12 - Yokohama, Japan (IEM Matrix)

In August 2002, the Rolling Stones launched their world wide LICKS tour, the name taken from the greatest hits album, Forty Licks, which would be released on October 1 of that year. The album was notable for 2 reasons. First, the 40 song double disc release commemorated the band's 40 year career. Second, and more significantly, the album was the first to combine the Stones' early releases with Decca alongside their later work that had been released on Virgin Records. While many critics wondered why the band needed yet another compilation, fans flocked to purchase 40 Licks, which reached the #2 position on both the US and UK album charts. The tour was also a world wide success, featuring 117 shows across 5 continents and grossing over $300 million in ticket sales before coming to an end in November 2003. This IEM Matrix recording captures the Stones in Yokahama, the 2nd of 6 nights in Japan, o n March 12, 2003, 17 years ago today.

In August 1986, Crowded House released their self titled debut album, which garnered only limited attention initially. In December 1986, however, the 4th single from the album, Don't Dream It's Over, became a huge hit, climbing to #2 on the Billboard charts and carrying the album up to #12.  The follow up single, Something So Strong, also became a top 10 hit in the US, reaching #7 on the Billboard charts.  This FM broadcast captures the band on tour in the US in support of their debut disc on March 11, 1987, 33 years ago today.

In February 1980, Squeeze released the album Argy Bargy, which helped the band finally breakthrough in the US and had some critics hailing Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook as the new Lennon & McCartney. While that praise was a bit over the top, there’s no doubt that the duo filled Argy Bargy with a host of soon to be classic new wave tunes, including Pulling Mussels (from the Shell), Another Nail in My Heart and If I Didn't Love You. This FM broadcast captures the band on tour in London about a month after the release of Argy Bargy, on March 9, 1980, 4 decades ago this very day. While the band would find greater commercial success with their next album, East Side Story, which yielded the hit single, and MTv favorite, Tempted, Squeeze established themselves as a leader of the New Wave movement with Argy Bargy.
