Paul McCartney - 2016-08-07 -  East Rutherford, NJ (Ex Aud)

Here's another show that I was actually at! As I've mentioned previously on this blog, my wife and I took our twin boys to their first concert on Father's Day 2015 - Sir Paul McCartney at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.  To say they had a good time would  be an understatement. So, when he scheduled a show at MetLife Stadium on August 7, 2016, a year ago today, they begged me to get tickets.  We did and Macca Round 2 was just as good as the first show. And very touching for all of us as well - you see it would have been my Dad's 83rd birthday had he not passed away in 2012. Sir Paul must have know because he played Birthday during the encores, the first time I ever heard him play it live! I've provided you 3 different tapes of this show in the download, and all sound good but I think the 3rd one (PM16NJ) sounds the best.  Enjoy. And oh, by the way - at my boy's request we saw Sir Paul again next on September 15, 2017 at Madison Square Garden and on June 18, 2022, again at Met Life Stadium.  That made 4 times going to see Macca as a family, plus my wife and I saw him 5 times prior - in 1993, 2002, twice in 2005, and in 2011!  If you like what you've rerad in this post, you'll find more tales of family and music in my book.

I've seen Sir Paul 9 times, and the last 4, in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2022, I went with both my wife and my twin boys. We started that run back in June 2015, a Father's Day show in Philadelphia, which was also the first concert my boys ever went to! The set list that night included the tune Macca wrote for Destiny, one of my boy's favorite video games. We followed that up with an August 7, 2016 show at Giants Stadium on what what would have been my Dad's 83rd birthday had he not passed away in 2012. Sir Paul broke out Birthday that night, the first time I had ever heard him play that song live. Then on September 15, 2017, at Madison Square Garden on my Mom's 85th birthday, Paul entertained us as almost no other performer can, telling stories, paying tribute to lost friends and lovers, playing over 40 songs scanning almost 60 years of musical history. He played Jet, my boy's favorite McCartney tune, a song that had been missing from the 2 previous shows they attended.  And then, he brought Bruce and Miami Steve on stage for what turned out to be back to back renditions of I Saw Her Standing There.  Most recently, on June 16, 2022, 4 years ago today, as captured in this sometimes excellent, sometimes very good, audience recording the 4 of us saw Sir Paul at Met Life stadium, just 2 days before his 80th birthday! Another 3 hour masterpiece, and another guest appearance by Springsteen, for 2 songs, his Glory Days and The Beatles' I Wanna Be Your Man, plus he sat in during the closing Abbey Road medley to add some blistering guitar work. The encore included a 2nd guest appearance, by a virtual John Lennon.  using footage from the Rooftop Concert, Paul and John did a virtual duet on I've Got A Feeling, and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. At the time, it was the last show he ever performed in the US, until 3 surprise performances at the Bowerey Ballroom in February 2025, which wre followed by a fall tour.

Paul McCartney - 2002-04-03 - San Jose, CA (Ex Aud)

Sir Paul McCartney was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for the first time in 1988 as a member of The Beatles.  He did not show up for that induction as he was in legal disputes with George, Ringo, and John's widow, Yoko, at the time. Macca clearly made peace with everyone by 1994, as that year he inducted John into the Rock Hall as a solo artist. McCartney was then inducted for a 2nd time in 1999 as a solo artist. His daughter Stella wore a T-Shirt emblazoned with the words "About F**king Time" in reference to that fact her dad had to wait 4 years after John to be recognized for his solo work. Paul dedicated the night to his recently deceased wife, Linda. He kicked off the end of night jam with a rousing version of Blue Suede Shoes, paying homage to Carl Perkins in the process, then came back later for a surprise rendition of Let It Be to close the night. 

This excellent audience recording captures McCartney 3 years later in San Jose on April 3, 2002, 2 dozen years ago today, during his Driving The USA tour in April 2002, his first set of concerts in the states since 1993. It was also his first tour in the wake of the death of his wife Linda, his former band mate George Harrison, and the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Maybe those events caused Sir Paul to take a new perspective on his life. Maybe he began to realize that life truly was too short. Whatever the reason, it was clear that something had changed, because on this tour, more than on any previous solo venture, Paul seemed to truly embrace his past. Over 20 songs each night were Beatle classics. The set lists also included tributes to September 11 (Freedom), John (Here Today), George (Something) and Linda (My Love). My lovely bride and I saw Paul during that tour at Madison Square Garden on April 27, 2002, and the emotion that filled the building that night has stayed with me to this very day.

Given Sir Paul's age, I may never get to see him live again, but the memories, especially from the last 4 shows, will last forever. 

This soundboard recording captures Sir Paul in London on December 19, 2024, just 1 year ago today.  Macca had gone back out of the road in late 2024, bringing the Got Back tour to South America, where he had also played in 2023, and to Europe, his first shows on that continent since before the pandemic. This show brought the tour to end in grand fashion, with a performance of Wonderful Christmastime accompanied by The Capital Choir, a guest appearance by Ronnie Wood on Get Back, the reappearnce of his bass guitar that had been missing for 50 years, and finally, a reunion with his fellow surviving Beatle, Ringo Starr on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) and Helter Skelter! By the way, I included an audience recording of the show as well as it contains the soundcheck for the show, which was not part of the IEM recording.

2020s - #3: In the Spring of 2022, Sir Paul McCartney brought his Got Back tour to the United States, his first series of live concerts since the COVID pandemic. The tour's title was both a play on words on the tune Get Back, and a declaration that he had returned, ready to continue to dazzle audiences around the world with his live performances. Then, in fall 2023, Sir Paul took the Got Back tour to Australia and South America. This soundboard recording captures McCartney in Mexcico onNoevmber 14, 2023, just 2 years ago today. By the way, the highlight of every show of the Got Back tour was I Got A Feeling, where using clips from the recent Get Back TV special and an isolated vocal track from the 1969 Rooftop show, Sir Paul did a a virtual duet with John Lennon.

2000s - #2: In September 2005, Paul McCartney launched the “US” tour, his 2nd North American tour in 3 years. His 2002 Back in The US tour had been a triumphant return to the stage for Sir Paul, who had been absent from the concert scene for almost 10 years at that time. The US Tour not only continued the momentum from 2002, but also showcased his critically acclaimed album, Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. On that album, McCartney played every instrument himself, much like on his debut album, McCartney back in 1970. In addition, at the suggestion of George Martin, Paul employed Nigel Goodrich as his producer. Goodrich was able to do something few would have dared – namely, challenge Sir Paul to be at his best. According to McCartney, "Nigel refused to allow me to sing songs that he didn't like, which was very cheeky of him”. Four tunes from the album – Jenny Wren, English Tea, Follow Me, and Fine Line – all were included in the set list. Of course, that still left plenty of room for a host of earlier solo material, several wonderful anecdotes, and 2 dozen Beatles classics. This soundboard recording captures Sir Paul in San Jose during that tour, on November 8, 2005, 2 decades ago today.

Lollapalooza began in 1991 as a touring festival, similar to Furthur and H.O.R.D.E., featuring primarily alternative rock acts. The festival's initial run ended in 1997, then 6 years passed before a relaunch in 2003. That effort did not go well as the 2004 edition was cancelled due to weak ticket sales.  Lollapalooza was revived in 2005 as a two day festival in Grant Park in Chicago, where it has remained ever since. This webcast recording captures highlights of Paul McCartney's appearance at Lollapalooza on July 31, 2015, a decade ago today. The stop was pary of Sir Paul's Out There tour, which encompassed 91 shows across 5 different continents, grossing $275 million in ticket sales.

Live Aid - 1985-07-13 - London, UK & Philadelphia, PA (Part  3) (FM)

Welcome to our 3rd and final post of the FM Broadcast of Live Aid from July 13, 1985, 4 decades  ago today.  This post features the finales at both Wembley and JFK. In London, Paul McCartney played Let It Be, but was not joined on stage by George and Ringo, despite a flurry of rumors. In fact, at one point, when Geldorf and Bowie walked on stage to sing back up for Paul, an announcer briefly yelled "there will be a reunion" before quickly correcting himself! Wembley closed with a rendition of Do You Know Its Christmas by all the performers, after which Sir Paul and Pete Towshend triumphantly hoisted Geldorf up on their shoulders. At JFK, the final acts included Eric Clapton making a triumphant return to the world stage; Phil Collins arriving from London via the Concorde to play a solo set, then playing drums for a reunion of the 3 surviving members of Led Zeppelin; and a solo set by Neil Young followed by his reunion by Crosby, Stills, and Nash. With Mick Jagger and Keith Richards feuding at the time, the Rolling Stones did not appear. Instead, Jagger played with Tina Tuner, while Richards and fellow Rolling Stone, Ron Wood, backed Bob Dylan, the last performer at JFK. Dylan stirred controversy with his remarks about redirecting some of the money to US farmers, which would lead to the first Farm Aid concerts. Live Aid ended with the all star finale at JFK playing We Are the World, the US song written for the event. An amazing and memorable day! I watched and listened to all of it, and had dozens of Maxell tapes of the show. Now we all have a digital recording of one of the most memorable events in rock history, an event that truly showed the power of rock music to make a difference. Twenty years after Live Aid raised millions to "Feed The World", Bob Geldorf launched another massive series of benefit concerts/festivals designed to "Make Poverty History.  Known as Live 8, these concerts, held in 10 countries simultaneously, were timed right before the start of the G8 economic summit in order to gain the attention of world political leaders. Live 8 played a key role in getting the G8 nations to pledge to double aid too impoverished countries from $25 billion to $50 billion by 2010.  This FM broadcast from July 2, 2005, 2 decades years ago today, captures some of the highlights from the London portion of Live 8 festival, including sets from Paul Mccartney, U2, Elton John, Sting, The Who and Pink Floyd, with Roger Waters rejoining David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright for the first time in 24 years.

The Silver Clef Award Winners Concert  - 1990-06-30 - Knebworth, UK (SBD)

Knebworth House in England, an estate from the 15th century, has been the site of major rock festivals since 1974 (go here for more info) when the Allman Brothers drew a crowd of 60,000.  In 1979, Led Zeppelin made their return two live performing with 2 concerts at Knebworth. The Rolling Stones, Queen, Genesis and Van Morrison, as well as dozens of other rock acts, also have graced the stage at Knebworth. On June 30, 1990, 35 years ago today, Knebworth hosted the Silver Clef Awards for outstanding contributions to music in the UK, resulting in an incredible star studded line up, including Eric Clapton, Elton John, Mark Knopfler, Pink Floyd, Robert Plant, Jimmie Page and Sir Paul McCartney. The concert was so big that it was broadcast on the radio world wide. WNEW-FM in NY carried the broadcast, and I filled several Maxell tapes with the historic performances from that show. Of course, then CD's happened, and the tapes sat in a box, as did my 2 Nakamichi tape players! Fortunately, thanks to the digital age, we now have the full FM broadcast of that historic show.

Paul McCartney - 2022-06-25 - Glastonbury, Pilton, UK (Webcast)

On June 16, 2022, I saw Sir Paul McCartney for the 9th time, a concert at Met Life stadium, just 2 days before his 80th birthday! Another 3 hour masterpiece, which included a guest appearance by Bruce Springsteen, for 2 songs, his Glory Days and The Beatles I Wanna Be Your Man. Bruce also sat in during the closing Abbey Road medley to add some blistering guitar work. The encore included a 2nd guest appearance, by a virtual John Lennon.  Using footage from the Rooftop Concert, Paul and John did a virtual duet on I've Got A Feeling, and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Given Sir Paul's age, I may never get to see him live again, but the memories, especially from the last 4 shows which I attended with my wife and twin sons, will last forever. This webcast recording captures Sir Paul just 9 days after that MetLife show, on June 25, 2022, 3 years ago today, doing what any 80 year old would do - headlining the Glastonbury Festival for the 2nd time!.  The set includes the same guest spots by Springsteen, the virtual duet with John, plus an appearance by David Grohl during Band On The Run and The End.

As mentioned in our Allman Brothers post earlier this month, when the Bonnaroo Festival launched in 2013, its focus was on jam bands.  As the years went on, however, the festival diversified to include more traditonal rock artists such as Elton John, BruceSpringsteen, and Stevie Wonder, just to name a few.  In 2013, the festival scored the biggest rock star of all time, when Sir Paul McCartney headlined on June 14, 2013. a dozen years ago today!  Sir Paul brought his Out There tour to Manchester, a 3 hour extraganza that featured a setlist filled with Beatles and Wings classics. The download includes an excellent audience recording of the complete show, as well as a TV SBD recording of the first 14 songs of the concert, which is unfortunately, all that was allowed to be broadcast.

Paul McCartney - 2008-06-01 - Liverpool Sound Concert, UK (SBD)

On June 1, 2008, 17 years ago today, Sir Paul McCartney found himself back in his home city of Liverpool, headlining a festival in honor of the city's year as the European Capitol of Culture. Also on the bill were The Zutons, The Kaiser Chiefs, and comedian Peter Kay. In front of a crowd of over 30,000, including Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison, widows of McCartney's former band mates John and George, Paul rocked the 124-year old Anfield Stadium to its foundations. Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters joined McCartney for 3 numbers, playing guitar on Band On The Run, and manning the drum kit during Back In The U.S.S.R. and I Saw Her Standing There. Paul also played tribute to both George and John. For George, he played Something on a ukulele given to him as a gift by Harrison. For John, he played the first ever live performance of A Day In The Life, which segued into a rendition of Lennon's anthem, Give Peace a Chance. David Grohl joined Paul for 3 songs, Band On The Run, Back In The U.S.S.R, and I Saw Her Standing There. The morning after the concert, Liverpool newspapers claimed that the show was McCartney's best concert ever. Download this historic event and see for yourself if the media folks were correct!
