1998: Robert Plant and Jimmy Page spent over a decade together as part of one of rock’s greatest bands, the mighty Led Zeppelin, before the band's demise in 1980 after the death of drummer John Bonham. In the mid 1990s, almost 15 years after Led Zep dissolved, Plant and Page reunited for an MTv Unplugged special, which received rave reviews. As a result, the duo not only released the Unplugged sessions as an album entitled No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded, but also agreed to tour in 1995. After that tour, the two went back into the studio and recorded another album, entitled Walking Into Clarksdale. The title referred to a town in the Mississippi Delta, a home of Delta blues music that influenced the duo. Released in April 1998, the album went to #8 on the Billboard charts in the US, and climbed all the way to #3 in the UK. Plant and Page went back on tour in support of Walking Into Clarksdale, touring Europe and North America. This soundboard recording captures the duo durng that tour, on September 23, 1998, 28 years ago today, in Las Vegas.

1995: In November 1994, The Black Crowes released their 3rd album, entitled Amorica. The album cover, which featured a picture taken from a 1976 bi-centennial edition of Hustler that showed a bikini bottom that failed to cover all of a women’s pubic hair, generated a host of controversy. Some retailers refused to carry the album until the record company re-issued the disc with an alternate cover. Despite the controversy - or maybe because of it - Amorica climbed to #11 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures the Black Crowes on tour in support of their controversial album, headlining the H.O.R.D.E. Festival, in Mountain View on September 3, 1995, 31 years ago today.

I saw Tom Petty live once, in April 1983 at the Brendan Byrne (later the Continental Airlines, and finally, the Izod) Arena. Nick Lowe was the lead-in band, making for quite a new wave night of music.

Today's post takes us forward about a dozen years after I saw Mr. Petty. In the early 1990’s, Petty took a break from the Heartbreakers to work on his second solo album, Wildflowers, which was released in 1994. The disc sold over 3 million copies, went to #1 on the Billboard charts, and spawned the hit singles, You Don't Know How It Feels, You Wreck Me, It's Good To be King and A Higher Place.  He reunited with the band, however, in 1995, launching the Dogs With Wings Tour. This soundboard recording captures Petty and The Hearbreakers during tha run, in Saratoga Springs on August 15, 1995, 31 years ago today.

*in memory of Jerry Garcia who passed away the previous day

The only time I saw Blues Traveler live was in November 1991, at Madison Square Garden as the lead-in band for Jerry Garcia! That was 3 years before they hit it big with the album "Four", which went to #8 on the Billboard charts. and sold over 6 million copies world wide.  The single from that album Run-Around also went to #8 on the charts.

Speaking on making it big, this post finds Blues Traveler capitalizing on their breakthrough in 1994 by helping headline the H.O.R.D.E festival the following year. This soundboard recordincaptures them in Maine on August 10, 1995, 31 years ago today, and the day after the aforementioned Mr. Garcia passed away. They pay tribute to Jerry with a moment of silence.

1990s - #2: After Led Zeppelin broke up in 1980 in the wake of the death of drummer John Bonham, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page each pursued other musical interests. In 1994, however, all that changed MTv approached Robert Plant to do an episode of the then wildly popular Unplugged series. Plant, not wanting to carry the banner of Led Zep's legacy alone, asked Page to join him. The passage of time seemed to heal any old wounds, and the duo again felt the musical connection that had made them rock legends. They taped the episode on August 25 and 26, pairing Led Zep classics with 4 new tunes. The show aired on October 12 to an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response. As a result, the duo not only released the Unplugged sessions as an album entitled No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded, but also agreed to tour in 1995. This soundboard captures Plant and Page during that tour on March 11, 1995, 31 years ago today in New Orleans.

1990s - #4: On November 29 1994, Nick Lowe released the album The Impossible Bird, which marked yet another reinvention of himself as an artist. According to reviews, the album "has a lot more to do with 1956 country music than with 1978 punk." That's hardly surprising for a man who was quoted as saying his greatest fear in recent years was "sticking with what you did when you were famous." This FM broadcast captures Lowe promoting his then new disc on the show in Philadelphia on January 28, 1995,  31 years ago today.

I saw Bruce Cockburn as the lead in band for Bob Weir in the summer of 1992. Cockburn also joined Weir during the encore of The Weight. The show was part of the Meadowlands Summer Fest series of concerts, which believe it or not, took place in the PARKING LOT of Giants stadium. The ever resourceful John Scher, a promoter who never let anything stand in the way of making a buck, put up a stage and some retractable stands in the lot, put a fence around it, and lo and behold, created a concert venue! You can read more about Mr. Scher and other crazy venues used for concerts in my book, TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT.

In any event, this FM broadcast captures Cockburn in New York on December 17, 1995, 3 decades ago today. In the early 1990s, Bruce Cockburn performed a series of annual Christmas concerts, broadcast from Sony Music Studios. He was often joined by special guests for those shows, as he is with this peformance.

Jerry Garcia Memorial - 1995-08-13 - San Francisco CA (SBD)

On August 13, 1995, 30 years ago today and 4 days after Jerry Garcia left this earth, thousands of Deadheads flocked to Golden Gate Park for a memorial service held in his honor.  Family,  friends and band mates all paid tribute to the late guitarist, telling stories that made the crowd laugh and cry. At one point, when drummers led by by Baba Olatumji started pounding a familiar Bo Diddley beat, the tie-dyed crowd broke into a spontaneous rendition of Not Fade Away, a Dead concert staple. While the surviving band members decided not to play live, tunes from their past concerts, all selected by David Gans, host of the Grateful Dead Hour radio program, filled the air  This soundboard recording captures that day in its entirety and reminds you that "if love is real, not fade away."

On Agust 9, 1995, 30 years ago today, the Allman Brothers, having heard the tragic news of Garcia's passing, decided that the show must go and dedicated their performance to Jerry, which Warren Haynes wrote about in the tune Patchwork Quilt. This soundboard recording captures that historic show, which featured guests appearances from Chris Robinson, Marc Ford, Hook Herrera and Danny Louis. It was only fitting in some ways that the Allmans were on stage the night Jerry passed, given the multitude of connections between the two. Both The Allmans and the Grateful Dead were renowned for their improvisational jams. Both bands had 2 drummers, had roots in blues, country, jazz, folk and bluegrass, and suffered tragic losses in the early 1970s only to rise to new heights. Both bands were connected to Bill Graham, and as a result frequently headlined both Fillmores. In fact, the Allmans closed the Fillmore East, while the Dead did likewise at the Fillmore West. In addition to their 1973 summer tour dates, The Dead and Allmans played 3 dates together in February 1970 at the Fillmore East. On December 31, 1973, the Grateful Dead took a rare break from performing on New Year’s Eve, so who else but the Allman Brothers stepped in to play a show at the Cow Palace. Of course, Jerry couldn’t stay away completely, as he and Bill Kreutzman showed up to join the Allmans for the encores.  And the relationship between the 2 bands continued long after the 1970s as we discussed in our Warren Haynes post earlier this month.

Three decades ago today, on August 9, 1995, Jerry Garcia's long strange trip came to an end as he passed away in his sleep, succumbing to heart failure brought on by years of drug abuse. Ironically, he died at Serenity Knolls, a California treatment center for the very demons that finally ended his life. His brother in music, Bob Weir, who had played side by side with Garcia for some 30 years as part of the Grateful Dead, had a concert scheduled for that night in Hampton Beach, NH, on the other side of the continent. Weir would have been forgiven if he had cancelled the show and flew back to the Bay Area upon hearing the news. Instead, he courageously took the stage to pay tribute to Jerry the only way he knew how. As he said at the outset of the show, "Well, if there's anything our friend taught is, it's that music can be used to ease us through the sad times." Despite personal pain and loss, Weir delivered a stunning set of music, adjusting lyrics as he went along, in homage to his lost companion. For example, during Throwing Stones, he chanted "Papa's gone, we are on our own!" Bassist Rob Wasserman turned his solo into a moving rendition of Amazing Grace, which he dedicated to Garcia. The night ended the only way it could have, with Weir singing the sadly appropriate Knockin' on Heaven's Door, a song normally performed by Jerry to close Dead shows. As Weir left the stage, the crowd erupted in cries of "Jerry, Jerry", followed by the "Not Fade Away" chant (you know our love will not fade away), that for every Deadhead was a symbol of their love for the band and its music. Those of use who loved the Dead still miss Jerry. Our love will not fade away. Bob did his life long friend, and himself, proud that August 9 night. Download this soundboard from that show, listen closely, mourn a little, and then celebrate the music and life of Jerry Garcia.

Sheryl 1995 - Back To Back - #1: When Sheryl Crow released the album Tuesday Night Music Club in August 1993, it garnered some critical accolades but very little public attention. Crow was featured in Rolling Stone’s “New Faces In Rock” section that year, but neither the album or its initial 2 singles charted. Finally, over a year later, the 3rd single from the disc, All I Wanna Do became a surprise smash hit, climbing to #2 on the Billboard charts and carrying the album to the #3 spot. By 1995, therefore, Sheryl was atop the rock world, the latest female artist to ascend to the throne of Queen of Rock. This FM broadcast captures Sheryl in Toronto on March 27, 1995, 3 decades ago today. Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Black Crowes 1995 - Back to Back - #1: In November 1994, The Black Crowes released their 3rd album, entitled Amorica. This soundboard recording captures the Black Crowes on tour in support of their controversial album in Berlin on January 25, 1995, 30 years ago today.
