1996: After achieving commercial success in the late 1970s and early 1980’s, Warren Zevon’s career took a host of twists and turns. He battled alcoholism and obsessive compulsive disorder. He  also served as musical coordinator and occasional guitarist for an ad-hoc rock music group called the Rock Bottom Remainders, a collection of writers performing rock and roll standards at book fairs and other events. The group included Stephen King, Dave Barry, Matt Groening and Amy Tan, just to name a few. He occasionally filled in for Paul Schaffer as bandleader for David Letterman’s Late Night Show. And he continued to release albums and tour. This soundboard recording captures him in Laytonville on September 1, 1996, 3 decades ago today, on tour in support of his 1995 album, Mutineer.

Warren Zevon - 1978-04-24 - Los Angeles CA (FM)

Warren Zevon was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2025, alongside Joe Cocker, Bad Company, Chubby Checker, and Cyndi Lauper, just to name a few other members of the class. Zevon was inducted for "Musical Influence", a category the hall defines as including "artists whose music and performance style have directly influenced, inspired, and evolved rock & roll and music impacting culture". As if every artist inducted as a performers hasn't done all those things. I think it really should be defined as "we've screwed up for countless years in not inducting you, so we created this category to get you in the door."

In any event, this FM broadcast captures Zevon at the Roxy in Los Angeels on April 24, 1978, 4 dozen years ago today. His album Excitable Boy,  which had been produced by Jackson Browne and guitarist Waddy Wachtel, had been released just 4 months earlier. The disc met with both critical and commercial success. Rolling Stone called the album one of the most significant releases of the 1970s. The disc went to #8 on the Billboard charts, and spawned the classic single Werewolves of London, which reached #21 on the singles chart. Interestingly, on that same day, the Grateful Dead were playing a concert in Normal IL, which has been officially released as Dave’s Picks 37. They too had taken notice of Zevon, as their choice for an encore that night was none other than Werevolves of London.

1970s - #5:  In 1978, Warren Zevon became an “overnight success”, when he released the album Excitable Boy, which in addition to the title track, featured Werewolves of London, Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner, Johnny Strikes Up The Band and Lawyers, Guns and Money. Of course, success hadn’t come overnight at all, as Zevon had toiled for years in Los Angeles as a song writer, contributing tunes to albums by artists such as Linda Ronstadt and The Everly Brothers, as well as to the soundtrack of Midnight Cowboy. In addition, he had released 2 albums prior to Excitable Boy, though neither garnered much attention. Excitable Boy helped the general public understand what the rock community had know for years, namely that Zevon was an incredibly gifted song writer, able to cast a cynical eye on events, politics, celebrities and even himself. This soundboard recording captures Zevon playing tunes from Excitable Boy at the Park West in Chicago, on March 23, 1978, 4 dozen years ago today.

Rock Werchter is an annual music festival held in the village of Werchter, Belgium taht has been running annually since 1976. and is a large sized rock music festival. .Originally it was a double-festival, called "Torhout-Werchter", with two festival areas at different sites in Belgium: one in Werchter and one in Torhout. In 1999, the festival dropped the Torhout site and since then has taken place only in Werchter. The 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2012 and 2014 festivals received the Arthur award for best festival in the world at the International Live Music Conference (ILMC).  Since 2003 Werchter has been a 4-day festival with a daily capacity of 88,000. The disc barely cracked the Billboard 200 rankings, peaking at #173, while critical success was moderate, with Rolling Stone and Allmusic both giving the album 3.5 star ratings. Several of the album's songs deal with the topic of death. For example, My Shit's F***ed Up is a mournful lament about the aging process and the inevitable decay that accompanies it. The title track and Don't Let Us Get Sick also feature death as a theme. Perhaps Warren had a premonition of what was in store - just 2 years later he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, and he passed away from the disease on September 7, 2003. This soundboard (or excellent audience) recording captures Zevon on tour in support of the album in South Shields, on May 29, 2000, a quarter century ago today.

Of course, less than 10 years later, on September 7, 2003, we’d lose Warren at the all to young age of 56, due to cancer, but not before he left us with a stunning farewell album, entitled The Wind, which featured guest appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Jackson Browne, Joe Walsh, David Lindley, Emmylou Harris and Tom Petty, just to name a few. Months after his death, Zevon would win 2 Grammys for the album, the only ones of his legendary 30 year career.

And of course, he released albums and continued to tour. This soundboard recording captures Zevon in Syracuse on February 7, 1994, 26 years ago today. Of course, less than 10 years later, on September 7, 2003, we’d lose Warren at the all to young age of 56, due to cancer, but not before he left us with a stunning farewell album, entitled The Wind, which featured guest appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Jackson Browne, Joe Walsh, David Lindley, Emmylou Harris and Tom Petty, just to name a few. In 1989, Warren Zevon was released by Virgin Records after 2 albums that failed to make a commercial impact.  He quickly signed with Giant and in 1991 released the album Mr. Bad Example.  While the disc didn't do much better than its 2 predecessor, the single The Searching for a Heart became a modest hit while another tune from the album, Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead, was featured on the soundtrack of a film by the same name. Zevon went on tour in support of the disc, including this show in Cleveland on January 5, 1992, 28 years ago today.

Warren Zevon - 1978-07-27 - Sausalito CA (SBD)

In 1978, Warren Zevon became an “overnight success”, when he released the album Excitable Boy, which in addition to the title track, featured Werewolves of London, Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner, Johnny Strikes Up The Band and Lawyers, Guns and Money. Of course, success hadn’t come overnight at all, as Zevon had toiled for years in Los Angeles as a song writer, contributing tunes to albums by artists such as Linda Ronstadt and The Everly Brothers, as well as to the soundtrack of Midnight Cowboy. In addition, he had released 2 albums prior to Excitable Boy, though neither garnered much attention. Excitable Boy helped the general public understand what the rock community had know for years, namely that Zevon was an incredibly gifted song writer, able to cast a cynical eye on events, politics, celebrities and even himself.  This soundboard recording captures Zevon playing tunes from Excitable Boy  at the legendary Record Plant in Sausalito, on July 27, 1978, 41 years ago today.
