As you know, we limit the number of audience recordings we post here at So Many Roads, trying to only bring you ones where the sound quality is exceptional. For this entry, I’ll make an exception by posting an average audience tape in order to bring you my first Van Morrison concert from July 10, 1986, 26 years ago today. I was living in New York City at the time, and summers meant Miller Concerts on The Pier. Pier 84 was right next to where the Intrepid, a former aircraft carrier turned into floating museum was docked, and it always felt like the big ship was standing guard over the crowd making sure no one would interrupt the music. Van hit the stage that night in support of his latest album, No Guru, No Method, No Teacher, a mystical disc in the tradition of Astral Weeks. The set list for much of the night reflected Van’s new found spiritualism, with only Moondance reaching back into his early 1970s work. Under a moonlit sky, Van reached into the souls of the audience with the healing power of music and we responded. Perhaps in recognition our appreciation for a set that eschewed the hits, as the night drew to a close, he unleashed the rarely played St. Dominic’s Preview. It was a perfect night except for moron 2 rows behind me who screamed Brown Eyed Girl after every song. Download this audience recording, and while the sound quality isn’t the best, at least you won’t hear the guy behind me!
