While the last leg of the Elevation Tour is remembered for U2's remarkable tribute to the victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, the early parts of the tour were a celebration of the band's amazing new album, All That You Can't Leave Behind. Following the mixed reception to their 1997 album, Pop, U2 returned to their roots for All That You Can't Leave Behind. At the time of the album's release, U2 said on a number of occasions that they were "reapplying for the job of the best band in the world". The public and critics heartily approved, as the disc sold over 12 million copies and won 7 Grammy Awards. The songs Beautiful Day, Walk On, Elevation, and Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of all reached the top 5 on the Billboard charts in the United Kingdom. Of course, many of the album's songs, especially Walk On, New York and Peace On Earth, would take on new meaning in the wake of the events of 9-11. This  IEM recording captures U2 in Buffalo during that legendary tour, on May 31, 2001, 22 years ago today.

In 1992, Steve Miller led in for the Grateful Dead at 10 stadium shows during their Spring/Summer tour.  In also joined the Dead during their set on several nights.  He called that run "the best thing that's happened to me in a long time. We jammed every night and it made me realize I had gotten a little stiff in my own presentation. With them, it's like playing to 80,000 people in a nightclub, or like a Monterey Pop Festival with only two bands." This soundboard recording captures Miller's opening for the Dead in as Vegas on May 30, 1992, 31 years ago today!

10,000 Maniacs - 1993-05-29 - Berkeley CA (FM)

In September 1992, 10,000 Maniacs released the album Our Time in Eden, which featured the singles These Are Days, Candy Everybody Wants and Few and Far Between. The disc would be the last that the band would record with original lead singer Natalie Merchant. While recording of the disc in 1991, Merchant had informed the other members of the group that she would be leaving with the next 2 years to start a solo career. This FM broadcast captures 10,000 Maniacs on their last tour with Merchant on May 29, 1993, 3 decades ago today, in Berkely. Just a little over 2 months later, on August 5, 1993, Merchant formally announced her departure from the band on MTv.  Note - some research by Alan R (see comments) reveals that this may actually be June 2. 1993 in Los Angeles.  The mislabling may be the result of the fact that there's a Greek Thetre in both Los Angeles and Berekely

Bob Weir & Ratdog - 1999-05-29 - Philadelphia, PA (SBD)

During the late 1980s, Bob Weir teamed up with bassist Rob Wasserman and the duo toured for seven years under names such as Weir/Wasserman and Scaring the Children. In 1994, Weir and Wasserman participated in the Woodstock '94 festival. Jay Lane was added on drums and Matthew Kelly on guitar and harmonica in 1995. They played their first show as a full band on April 22, 1995, billed as Friends of Montezuma and then as the Ratdog Revue. They played their first show as Ratdog on August 8, 1995. Just 1 night later, Ratdog would play an emotional show in tribute to Jerry Garcia, Weir’s brother in music and band mate in the Grateful Dead, who passed away that same day, Weir continued with Ratdog after the end of the Grateful Dead, touring regularly for almost 20 years, though recently he has spent time on other projects such as the Campfire Band and the Wolf Bros. This soundboard recording captures Weir & Ratdog on May 29, 1999, 2 dozen years ago today, in Philadelphia.

I'm wondering how many folks simply know the late Eddie Money as the guy in the Geico commercial who owns a travel agency. I give him a lot of credit for being able to poke some fun at himself in that commercial, singing lines to Two Tickets to paradise to a befuddled family! (They need 4 tickets and leave in 2 weeks, not tonight). In any event, Eddie rang up a pretty good career in the 1980s, inducing 4 platinum albums and 9 top 40 singles. His biggest hit was in Take me Home Tonight in 1986, which climbed all the way to #4 on the Billboard charts, That tune featured a duet with Ronnie Spector, who sngs the chorus from her hit, Be My Baby. This soundboard recording captues Eddie about 2 decades after his hey day and 8 years before his Geico commercial, in Detroit on May 28, 2004, 19 years ago today.

The Band - 1994-05-27 - Bergen, Norway (FM)

For a group that had played their supposedly "Last Waltz" in 1976, 1994 proved to be a magical year for The Band. Original members Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson continued to tour relentlessly, incorporating tunes from their 1993 album Jericho into their set list. Among the songs from that disc was a unique cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Atlantic City. They played at Woodstock 1994 in August, 25 years after they had played the original festival in 1969. They capped the year by being elected to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That 1994 class also included John Lennon, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Bob Marley, The Animals, Duane Eddy, and one of The Band’s long time touring partners, The Grateful Dead. Eric Clapton, who had long admired the group and cited them as one of the reasons he moved away from the style of music played by Cream, made the induction speech for The Band. This soundboard recording captures The Band during that historic year, at the Nattjazz Festival in Norway, on May 27, 1994, 29 years ago today.

Over the next 50 years, Santana would encounter the normal ups and downs of any long music career - periods of chart topping sales and times of commercial failure, band line up changes, and variaiosn oin mudical style. On September 16, 2003, Bowie released the album Reality, his 23rd studio disc. The album received mixed reviews but climbed to #29 on the Billboard charts in the US, and made it all the way to the #3 spot in the UK. On October 7, Bowie launched a world tour in support of the album, which included stops in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The tour was cut short in June, however, when after a show in Germany, Bowie was diagnosed with a blocked artery that required an angioplasty procedure. This IEM matrix recording captures Bowie just a few weeks before the tour's premature end, in Buffalo on May 25, 2004, 18 years ago today.

The year 2015 was a momentous one for Phil Lesh.  In late June/early July, he reunited with former Grateful Dead band mates Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, joined by Trey Anastasio, Bruce Hornsby and Jeff Chimenti,2 shows in Santa Clara and 3 in Chicago. Dubbed the Fare Thee Well concerts, the shows were a celebration of the the band's 50th anniversary as well as the last time those 4 original Dead members intended to share the stage together.  In addition, his band Phil & Friends played a series of shows dedicated to each year in the Grateful Dead's long, storied history. Phil also played shows with some "non traditional" friends, continuing to experiment with is musical styles even as he began his 5th decade of stagge.  FOr example, this soundboard recording from San Rafael from May 24, 2015, 8 years ago today finds him joined by Tim Bluhm, Nicki Bluhm, Scott Law, Steve Molitzand Peter Lavezzoli.

In Spring 1992, Steveie Wonder launched a 9 country, 15 city tour of Europe.  For that run, Wonder enlisted Henry Panion, a University of Alabama at Birmingham professor and Grammy Award winning gospel musician, to serve as the conductor for his backing orchestra. Panion got the job through his work with the city orchestra in Columbus, Ohio. His arrangement of the gospel standard O Happy Day so impressed Leslie Dunner of the Detroit Symphony that Dunner recommended Panion to Wonder.  This soundboard recording captures Wonder during that European tour, in Spain, on May 22, 1992, 31 uears ago today.

Bruce Springsteen - 2000-05-21 - Anaheim CA (ALD-IEM)

In 1999, after a long, 11 year separation, Bruce Springsteen, decided, to paraphrase the immortal words of John Belushi in the Blues Brothers, to put the band back back together. The Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band reunion tour launched in April 1999 and stretched until July 2000.  Some highlights included a record sold-out, 15-show run at Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey and a 10-night, sold-out engagement at New York City's Madison Square Garden, which ended the tour.  At key points in each show, usually during Tenth Avenue Freezeout and his newest song, Land of Hope and Dreams, Sprinsgteen played the role of preacher, calling on his disciples in the crowd to feel the healing power of the Ministry of Rock and Roll.  Another special moment each night occurred during If I Should Fall Behind, a song written while Springsteen was away from the E Street band. Now the song became a vow of togetherness, with Springsteen, wife Patti Scialfa, Steve Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, and The Big Man,  Clarence Clemons each singing a verse, promising to wait for each other. It was clear that the Boss was glad to be back with his old comrades. This ALD-IEM recording captures Bruce and the E Street Band near the end of the tour, on May 21, 2000, 23 years ago today in Anaheim.

James Taylor - 1999-05-20 - Hamburg, Germany (FM)

In May 1997, James Taylor released Hourglass, his first studio album in  6 years. An introspective disc, Hourglass focused largely on Taylor's troubled past and family. For example, Enough to Be On Your Way was inspired by the alcoholism-related death of his brother Alex earlier in the decade. The dark tone of the disc was also inspired by Taylor's divorce from actress Kathryn Walker just a year earlier. The album earned Taylor his best critical reviews in some 20 years. In addition, Hourglass was commercial success, reaching No. 9 on the Billboard 200, Taylor's first Top 10 album in sixteen years. This FM broadcast captures Taylor on tour in the wake of the succes of Hourglass, in Germany on May 20,1999, 2 dozen years ago today.

Bruce Hornsby - 1999-05-19 - Orlando, FL (SBD)

On April 12, 1999, I saw one of my favorite concerts - Bruce Hornsby at the Morristown Performing Arts Center. With just over 1000 seats, the MPAC is the perfect place for a show. Hornsby was in excellent form, combining his own material with a host of wonderful covers, including Girl from North Country, Madman Across The Water, Tupeluo Honey and Franklin’s Tower. My lovely bride was pregnant at the time with my twin boys, so I always tell them it was their first concert! You can find that show here! This soundboard recording from May 19, 1999, 2 dozen years ago today, is from a little over a month after when Hornsby played Morristown. Of course, Hornsby learned his lessons well while playing with the Dead, so no two shows of his are alike. That said, even though this performance from Orlando includes just a few of the songs he played in Morristown, it still showcases Hornsby’s tremendous piano playing and improvisational skills.

In 1989, Tom Petty released the album Full Moon Fever, his debut solo effort.  the disc went to #3 on the Billboard charts in the Us, and features 3 singles that cracked the top 25: I Won't Back Down at #12, Running Down a Dream at #23 and Free Falling at #7. Petty was back on tour with the Heartbreakers in 1990, including this show, broadcast on FM radio, from Delaware from May 18, 1990, 33 years ago today, but all 3 of his solo singles were featured in the set list!

The Dead - 2009-05-16 - Quincy, WA (FM)

In 2003, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann launched The Dead, the successor to the Other Ones and the 2nd band formed by former members of the Grateful Dead after the death of Jerry Garcia. The Dead would play together until Spring 2009. Jimmy Herring, Rob Barraco, Jeff Chimenti, Joan Osborne and Warren Haynes were part of a rotating crew of musicians supporting the former GD members. This soundboard recording captures The Dead during their final tour, in Quincy on May 16, 2009, 14 years ago today.

Counting Crows - 1997-05-15 - London UK (SBD)

Released in 1993, the Counting Crtwos debut album, August & Everything After, went to #4 on the Billboard charts in the strength of such songs as Mr. Jones, Round here and Rain King. The disc propelled the band to stardom and they spent the next 2 years on the road, touring relentlessly. They didn't go back into the studio to work on their second album until early 1996.  That new disc, entitled Recovering The Satellites, released in October 1996, went to #1 on the Billboard charts, but received mixed reviews from the critics. Rolling Stone found the tunes, which dealt with the challenges of the band's new found fame, to be "deeply satisfying", and felt the band "largely achieved their serious ambitions." The Independent gave the album a far more negative review, calling the songs "self-pitying", and criticizing lead singer and song writer Adam Duritz for his inability "to shut up about himself".  The band went on tour in 1997 in support of the album, including a spring run in Europe. This soundboard recording captures the band during that trip across the pond, in London on May 15, 1997, 26 years ago today.

Neil Diamond - 2008-05-14 - London, UK (FM)

On May 6, 2008, Neil Diamond released his 27th studio album, entitled Home Before Dark.  The disc went to #1 on both the US and UK album charts, making Diamond at the time, the oldest performer to have a #1 album (That record has since been surpassed by several artists, including Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney and Tony Bennett).  Just about a week after the album's release, on May 14, 2008, 15 years ago today, Diamond made an appearance on BBC Radio, as captured in this FM Broadcast, playing tunes from the new album as well as a host of greatest hits.

Hot Tuna - 2009-05-13 - Portland OR (SBD)

Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady first worked together in 1965, as members of the Jefferson Airplane. In 1969, while still with the Airplane, they launched a side project called Hot Tuna, an acoustic duo that focused on their blues roots. In 1972, after the Airplane dissolved, Hot Tuna went electric, featuring long instrumental jams in concert. While I'm not a big fan of their electric music, I do find something unique and compelling about acoustic Hot Tuna. This one's a soundboard of Jorma and Jack from Portland from May 13, 2009, 14 years ago today.
