2020s - #2: On March 10, 2020, 6 years ago today as captured in this soundboard recording, Jaimoe reunited with a host of other former Allman Brothers Band members to crelebrate the band's 50th anniversary with a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden. Guitarists Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes, bassist Oteil Burbridge, percussionist Marc Quinones, and keyboardist Chuck Leavell joined Jaimoe for the celebration. So did Reese Wynans, who while never a member of the band, was a part of the initial 1969 jam session that led to the Allman Brother’s formation. It was a joyous night, a celebration of incredible music and legends lost, and the last concert at Madison Sqaure Garden for over a year due to the impact of the COVID pandemic.

2010s- #2: In the 21st century, rock and roll has taken to the high seas. Rock and/or Jam Cruises have become a popular vacation option, with fans sailing to exotic locations while getting up close with their favorite bands. Artists ranging from jam band icons such as Bob Weir and Mickey Hart to progressive rockers such as Yes and Steve Hackett to 1980s acts such as Huey Lewis and Modern English have participated in rock cruises in recent years.  Perhaps no band has been more connected with jam cruises than Gov't Mule, whose Island Exodus to Jamaica has become an annual event.  This webcast recording captures the Mule's lead singer and guitarist, the incomparable Warren Haynes, performing a solo set during Island Exodus #4, on January 18, 2013, 13 years ago today.

2000s - #4: When you spend the first 3 decades of your career alongside one of the greatest guitarists in history (namely, the one and only Jerry Garcia), you have to think carefully about who you choose to be your lead guitarist when you start your own band. So, when Phil Lesh launched Phil & Friends in 1998, he made sure that his rotating ensemble always had a Guitar God at the helm. Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastaiso, Derek Trucks, Steve Kimock, and Stanley Jordan are just a few of the names that have played lead guitar for Phil. Another is Warren Haynes, who can be heard loud and clear on this FM broadcast from Boston from November 23, 2001, 2 dozen years ago today. Warren, who has also lit up the stage for the Allman Brothers and Govt Mule, as well as during his own solo shows, was ranked #23 on Rolling Stone's 2003 list of the top guitarists, though he was inexplicably left off the 2011 version of the list. I won't even try to explain that one. The show also features Jimmy Herring, who despite stints with Widespread Panic, The Dead, the Other Ones, the Allman Brothers, Aquarium Rescue Unit and, of course Phil & Friends, just never seems to get any recognition for his amazing guitar work. The incredible 2001 line up also featured drummer John Molo and keyboard plater Rob Barraco.

This soundboard recording captures Warren Haynes at Red Rocks on August 3, 2014, 11 years ago today, playing a tribute to the the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia, backed by a full symphony orchestra. The Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration concerts were just one of numeorus connections between Warren and Jerry. At many of the Symphonic Celebration shows, Warren played Garcia’s famed Wolf guitar. His tune, Patchwork Quilt, is a tribute to Jerry, mentioning how the Allmans were at Jones Beach the night Jerry died. In addition, from 1999 to 2001, Haynes played guitar for Phil Lesh and Friends. Then in 2004 and 2009, he played with The Dead, one of the several post Grateful Dead incarnations of the band.  Of course, in both bands, he took on the lead guitar parts that once belonged to the one and only Mr. Garcia.

2020s - #1: Back in August, we brought you a show by Jorma Kaukonen which demonstrated one way artists played concerts during the pandemic, namely doing webcast broadcasts from their home based studios. This webcast from October 1, 2020, 4 years ago today, show cases another form of pandemic era concert. Warren Haynes played a series of outdoor shows at South Farms in Morris, CT, where folks purchased spaces that were socially distanced.  The shows were also streamed on the web.  Warren's set list at this show included some great cover tunes, including finishing up the second set with a version of Paul McCartney's Maybe I'm Amazed.

The concert that has provided an opportunity for the performing artists, audience and the local community to give back during the holiday season. The first show was dubbed, "The Christmas Jam: Musician's X-Mas Reunion" and was held at 45 Cherry, a local club in Asheville, on December 22, 1988. This event has continued to grow every year and is now dubbed "Warren Haynes Presents: The Christmas Jam". In fact the event has gotten so big thare's even a concert the night before, a warm up you might say, that's aptly dubbed "The Pre Christmas Jam" and is usually held at the Ornage Peel in Asheville.  At the 2011 Pre-Jam, host Warren Haynes did double duty, first playing a solo set and then later coming back to play with his band Gov't Mule.  So, those 2 sets make up today's Back To Back offering.  Ths FM Broadcast captures Warren opening the concert on December 9, 2011, 12 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back later today for part 2 of this Back To Back Set where Warren fronts Gov't Mule.

Phil Lesh 2021 - Back to Back - #1:  When Phil Lesh returned to the Capitol Theatre in October 2021, he brought as many friends along as he could,  His 9 night stand was broken into three 3 show segments, each featuring a different band line up.  But no trio of shows was more anticipated by fans than the first one, from October 11-13, as it reunited the Phil Lesh Quintet, nicknamed the Q.  That line up, featured, in adddition to Lesh, Warren Haynes on guitar & vocals, Jimmy Herring on guitar, Rob Barraco on keyboards and vocals, and John Molo on drums. The Q's original run, from 2002 to 2003, produced some of the best shows ever played by any iteration of Phil & Friends. Warren Haynes was recruited by Dickey Betts to join the Allmn Brothers' Band in 1989, which led to a revival of the band's popularity and a dramtic improvemnt in their live performances.  He quit in 1997 to focus on his other band, Gov’t Mule, but returned in 2000, continuing on until 2014. In fact, Haynes announcement early that year that he intended to leave the band, a sentiment echoed by the band's other guitarist Derek Trucks (you'll hear more about Trucks later thsi month) prompted the Allman's to announce their retirement. They would play their final show at one of their favorite venues, the Beacon Theatre, on October 28, 2014, the 43rd anniversary of the tragic death of Duane Allman.

This soundbaord recording captures Warren at Red Rocks on August 3, 2014, 9 years ago today, playing a tribute to the the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia, backed by a full symphony orchestra. The Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration concerts were just one of numeorus connections between Warren and the Dead. After the tragic death of bassist Allen Woody in August 2000, Warren Haynes and Matt Abts decided to soldier on with Gov't Mule, recruiting David Schools as their new bass player. The Spring 2001 tour was dubbed the New School Of Mule, a play of the new bassist's name and also a reflection of the fact that the band was entering a new stage. In the midst of that spring run, Warren took a night to play an acoustic show in Atlanta, on May 6, 2001, 22 years ago today, as captured in this FM broadcast.  It wasn;t long into the set, though, that his Gov't Mule bandmates joined hiom on stage, for a unique performance that included covers of Van Morrisons And It Stoned Me and Into The Mystic, as well as U2's One.

Warren Haynes, know for his brilliant guitar work with the Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule, not to mention his solo work, has a long history of copnnection to Grateful Dead guitarist and front man, th elate great Jerry Garcia, who passed away 27 years ago this month. Warren's tune, Patchwork Quilt, is a tribute to Jerry, mentioning how the Allmans played a show at Jones Beach the night Jerry died,  In 2013, he launched the first of sveral Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration tours, a series of shows in which he played a set list composed entirely of Garcia & Grateful Dead tunes, backed by a symphony orchestra. For many of those those show, Haynes played Garcia’s famed Wolf guitar. This soundbaord crecording, from August 16, 2003, 19 years ago today, captures Warren playing at another show in tribute to Garcia. This acoustoc set includes the aforementioned Patchwork Quilt, as well as Garcia's To Lay Me Down, as well as covers of In My Life, One, It Stoned Me and Comfotbaly Numb.
