In April 1999, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers released their 10th studio album, entitled Echo. Only a handful of songs from the disc, however, were played on the band's tour that year. The record was written while Petty was going through a difficult divorce, and many of the tunes were highly personal and painful as a result. So, to ease the pain, Petty kept the set list focused on older material. Even his appearance on VH1's Storytellers, captured in the soundboard recording from on March 31, 1999, 18 years ago today, a gig ostensibly designed to promote the new album, only included 2 tracks from it.  R.I.P.

The Yardbirds are England's version of the US’s Buffalo Springfield (or vice versa) – possibly more famous for who was in the band and what future musical acts they spawned than for the music they made! Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page all played guitar for the Yardbirds at some point between 1963 and 1968. That trio all ranked in the top 5 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time with Clapton as #2, Page as #3, and Beck at #5. The Yardbirds begat such bands as Cream, The Jeff Beck Group, and of course, the mighty Led Zeppelin! This soundboard recording captures the band as it neared the end of its run, on March 30, 1968, a half a century ago today, at the Anderson Theater in New York City. Jimmy Page was on guitar for this show, but he was already thinking about the future. The Yardbirds would play their final show on July, 7 1968. By September of that year, Page had recruited Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham to join him in the band. After playing a few shows as the New Yardbirds in late 1968, they changed their name to Led Zeppelin and the rest is history. Download this one, therefore, to hear the last of the Yardbirds and get a glimpse of the future of Led Zep.

My in-laws are snow birds - spend the summer up North near family and spend the winters down south in Fort Lauderdale. When in Florida, they’re regulars at the Hard Rock casino, playing enough blackjack and slots to earn plenty of “comps.’ The casino normally sends them 2 tickets for every concert or show that the venue hosts. A few years ago, my wife was on her weekly call with them to see how everything was going in Florida. I overheard something about getting tickets to a show, but giving them away because they had no idea who the performer was. My wife filled in all the details for me when she got off the phone. Turns out the tickets my in laws gave away were for Eric Clapton. I still haven’t recovered. At least as a consolation prize, I found this high quality audience recording of that EC Show, from March 29, 2013, 5 years ago today.

Santana - 1987-03-28 - Paris, France (FM)

The late 1980s were not kind to Santana. Some 20 years after they burst on the music scene, the band's albums barely made an impact on the Billboard charts. Beyond Appearances, released in 1985, only went to #50, while Freedom, released in 1987, barely cracked the top 100, peaking at #95. Critical reviews of the two discs were just as bad. Rolling Stone wrote that "Beyond Appearances hardly bears consideration on any level." Allmusic wrote that "Freedom was a literal return to form, but, unfortunately, not to the quality of early Santana albums." Santana would endure another decade of commercial and critical disappointment, before the album Supernatural stunned everyone in 1999 by climbing to #1 on the charts. In the interim, unable to make any magic in the studio, Carlos did what he did best - perform live, as evidenced in this FM broadcast from his European Tour in support of Freedom from March 28, 1987, 31 years ago today.

Paul McCartney - 1993-03-27 - Auckland, NZ (HQ Aud) 

On February 18 1993, Paul McCartney launched his New World Tour, which stretched until December and saw Sir Paul, wife Linda, Paul "Wix" Wickens, Blair Cunningham, Robbie McIntosh, and Hamish Stuart visit North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. McCartney was touring in support of his latest album, Off The Ground, so the set list featured 6 songs from the disc - Hope of Deliverance, Peace In The Neighborhood, C'mon People, Biker Like An Icon, Looking For Changes and the title track. The new tunes, however, were not the reason thousands of people flocked to these concerts. No, most folks, like my wife and I , who saw Sir Paul during this tour on June 11, 1993 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, went to hear the "cute Beatle" reach into his illustrious past. We were not disappointed. From the opening Drive My Car to the closing Hey Jude, over half the set list was dedicated to Beatle tunes. Throw in a few Wings classics such as Band on The Run, Live and Let Die, My Love and the rarely played Another Day, and this was a night to remember. We didn't have the best seats -- not sure if there is any such thing as a good seat in a 60,000 seat stadium - but it hardly nattered. We knew every note and sang every word, knowing this was as close to the Beatles as we would ever get. And who knew at the time that it would be another 9 years before Paul would again tour. This high quality audience recorsing captures Sir Paul earlier in that tour, in New Zealand on March 27, 1993, a quarter century ago today.  Take note - the set list includes a rare performance of Mull Of Kintyre.

Rachel Sweet - 1980-03-26 - Cleveland, OH (FM)

Another guilty pleasure this month at So Many Roads. When the then 18 year old Rachel Sweet released her album Fool Around in late 1978, it became a staple on the turntable (yes - it's that old!) in my college dorm room. Part new wave, part early 60's girl group in sound, the album featured songs such a B-A-B-Y, Wildwood Saloon, I Go to Pieces and Sad Song. In the summer of 1979, I got to see Rachel in Central Park as the lead in for Eddie Money. Then, in early 1980, tickets went on sale for Jerry Garcia at the Capitol Theatre, with Rachel Sweet as his lead-in. While my roomies weren't huge Garcia fans, they all agreed we should get tickets so we could see Rachel. And, so I did! The show was scheduled for March 1, 1980. A week before the concert, however, came the announcement that Robert Hunter had replaced Rachel Sweet as the lead-in. No explanation was provided, but I'm guessing there was concern that the Dead Head audience may not have appreciated Ms. Sweet. In any event, while I didn’t get to see Rachel that spring, plenty of other folk did. This FM Broadcast captures Rachel at the Agora in Cleveland on March 26, 1980, 38 years ago today.

In August 2002, James Taylor released his 15th studio album, entitled October Road. The album debuted at #4  on the Billboard 200 with 154,000 copies sold in its opening week, which is Taylor's best sales week performance for an album in the SoundScan era. The album was certified Platinum by the RIAA on November 21, 2002 and has sold over 1 million copies. In March 2003, Taylor launched a brief European Tour in support of the disc. His show at the mermaid Theater in London, o March 25, 2003, 15 years ago today, was broadcast 4 days later n BBC Radio 2.

The Pretenders - 1987-03-24 - Chicago (SBD)

I saw the Pretenders for the 2nd time on April 1, 1987.  Much had changed in the 6 years since the first Pretenders show I attended in October 1981. The band now could hold court at Radio City Music Hall, an art deco architectural masterpiece with incredible acoustics in the heart Midtown, as opposed to the Palladium, a dingy, cramped theater in a somewhat run down neighborhood on 14th street. The Pretenders were a commercial success, having found mainstream appeal with the albums Learning To Crawl and Get Close, no longer an up and coming new wave band looking for a big break. Most significantly, the band had lost 2 founding members, Pete Fardon and James Honeyman Scott, to drug overdoses. What remained constant was Chrissie Hynde's distinctive vocals, stage presence and ability to lead the band through a tight, driving performance. While I have never found a recording of the April 1 show at Radio City, I did find this soundboard from about a week earlier, March 24, 1987, 31 years ago today, in Chicago. Bythe way, I'm off to The Pretenders again in just a few days, on April 2, 2018 in Morristown NJ!

Dave Mason - 1991-03-23 - Buffalo, NY (SBD)

To say Dave Mason has had an interesting rock & roll career would be an understatement. In the late 1960s, he was an on again, off again member of Traffic. Around that time, he played acoustic guitar on Jimi Hendrix's legendary version of All Along The Watchtower, In the 1970s and 1980s. he had a successful solo career,especially with his 1977 album, Let It Flow. That disc would produce 3 top 100 tunes - So High at #89, Let It Go Let It Flow at #45 and We Just Disagree at #12. For a brief time in the 1990s, Mason was a member of Fleetwood Mac, releasing the album Time with them in 1995. In 1997, he was scheduled to be a member of Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band, performing Only You Know and I Know, We Just Disagree and Feelin Alright, but he was dropped from rehearsals before the tour started. That may explain why he doesn't always get the recognition he deserves as he didn't seem to be able to stick around with a band for more than a brief moment. In any event, this soundboard recording captures Mason solo in Buffalo on March 23, 1991, 27 years ago today.

Neil Young - 1996-03-21 - Princeton By The Sea, CA (SBD)

During the Spring of 1996, Neil Young and Crazy Horse (Frank 'Poncho' Sampedro, Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina) were recording a new album up at Neil’s Broken Arrow Ranch in the Santa Cruz mountains near San Francisco. The band planned to launch a tour a Tour of Europe and the US  in mid-June. For whatever reasons, whether to gain inspiration for the new album or to warm-up for the upcoming tour, Neil and Crazy Horse embarked on what has become known as 'The Northern California Bar Tour of 1996' - a string of sixteen performances conducted over a period of three months. Although it was not uncommon for Neil and The Horse to play a few local warm-up concerts before hitting the road, the number of these particular shows led some to speculate that they were a nostalgic celebration of a similar series of shows performed some twenty years earlier in 1976. Although many old favorites from that time period were played, however,  the intensity of the performances and the eventual introduction of all of the songs from the new album showed that this was a far cry from a stroll down memory lane. While two of these shows occurred at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, the remaining fourteen were performed at the Old Princeton Landing bar in Princeton-By-The-Sea, a small harbor town about four miles north of Half Moon Bay on the California Coast south of San Francisco. Given that the club held only 150 people, and to avoid drawing undue attention to themselves, Neil and Crazy Horse played under the pseudonym, The Echoes. This soundboard recording captures the 4th of the shows at the Old Princeton Landing, on March 21 1996, 22 years ago today.  By the way, for more on the he Northern California Bar Tour of 1996, go here.

The 1980's were a difficult period for the Man in Black. His impact on the Country Music charts waned, his long time record company, Columbia, stopped marketing his work, he had a relapse of drug addiction and underwent double bypass heart surgery. He was so frustrated with Columbia that he actually recorded a song called Chicken in Black, about his brain being transplanted into a chicken. That tune helped sever the relationship between Cash and Columbia. Despite his troubles, Cash did have some positive moments during the decade. In 1986, he teamed with Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins on the album Class of '55. He continued to tour successfully, with the Highwayman early in the decade, and later, with wife June Carter and the Carter family. Greg Kihn - 1983-03-19 - Valencia, CA (FM)

Yet another guilty pleasure we're featuring this month at So Many Roads. When MTV launched on August 1, 1981, many of the earliest music videos the station aired were from emerging new wave artists such as Blondie, Elvis Costello, and The Pretenders, just to name a few. That said, at some point, it seemed that almost any MTV video from a new band became classified as new wave, whether or not the artist truly fit that genre. Such was the case with Greg Kihn, whose video for the Breakup Song - simply a clip of the tune being played live - was among the first aired by MTV. As a result of that video being played alongside ones by the artists mentioned earlier, Kihn sometimes was referred to as a new wave act, even though he was really a straight ahead rock and roller. Kihn later received even more attention on MTV for his video for the song Jeopardy. It was one of the first “concept” videos aired on MTV, and was later spoofed by Weird Al Yankovic in the video I Lost on Jeopardy. New Wave or not, Kihn’s video singles did well on the charts, with The Breakup Song reaching #15 and Jeopardy climbing all the way to the #2 position. On March 18, 1967, 51 years ago this very day, Simon & Garfunkel launched their first European Tour with a concert at the Royal Albert Hall, as captured in this soundboard recording.  The duo dazzled the London crowd with their harmonies. Nick Jones of Melody Maker wrote ‘Two people, one guitar, gave a concert of overwhelming beauty, compassion, and entertainment at London’s vast Royal Albert Hall… where enormous crowds flocked to see Simon and Garfunkel’s only London appearance. Paul Simon is mainly responsible for the songwriting, and his fiery guitar playing makes enough sound to be a complete backing group. But they don’t need one. Lean, blond Garfunkel stands rather shyly in the gloom as Paul gradually builds up rapport with the audience, slowly, delightfully nervously, breaking ice that must be broken for everyone to enjoy themselves. This is done mainly with their songs – beautiful harmonies, words biting home, guitar passages punching behind the lyric, driving, and falling."

In October 1981, U2 released their second album, October, to mixed reviews. The band had struggled with this disc, often feeling conflicted between the themes of religion and spirituality contained in the songs and the rock and roll life style they were living.  Recording was further complicated by the fact that a briefcase containing lyrics was stolen by fans, through it was eventually returned.  Perhaps the band reached a bit too far with October.  Years later Bono himself said about the album, "Can you imagine your second album—the difficult second album—it's about God?" In any event, despite the less than stellar reviews and poor sales of October, the band toured extensively in support of the disc.  They arrived in the United States in early 1982 for the 3rd of 4 legs of their October tour, playing small clubs, college campuses and even a riverboat (go here for more details)!  The tour proved that while their studio efforts may have needed improvement, their live performances were as good as those by any band in the industry. This soundboard recording captures them on March 17, 1982 at the Ritz in NY, 3 dozen years ago today.  U2 live on St. Patrick's Day In New York city, home of one of the world's largest parades celebrating Ireland's patron saint -- it doesn't get much better than that.

Dave Edmunds - 1990-03-16 - New York, NY (FM)

In 1989, Ringo Starr launched his first All-Starr Band, gathering a group of fellow musicians for a series of concerts, which featured songs from the Beatles, Ringo's solo career, and each of the individual group members repertoire. The All-Starr tour received such a positive response that Dave Edmunds decided he would try something similar the following year. Edmunds joined forces with Dion, Graham Parker, Kim Wilson (of the Fabulous Thunderbirds) and Steve Cropper, to create the Rock 'N' Roll Revue. Ironically, Edmunds' old Rockpile band mate, Nick Lowe, wasn't part of the show. This WNEW-FM broadcast capture's Edmunds' set from the Rock &amp Roll Revue concert at the Ritz in New York, from March 16, 1990, 28 years ago today. Phil Lesh - 2017-03-15 - Portchester, NY (HQ Aud)

On March 15, 2017, just a year ago today, Phil Lesh celebrated his 77th birthday on stage at the Capitol Theater in Portchester, NJ, as captured in this high quality audience recording. The Capitol, which was a concert hall in the early 1970s, then functioned as a broadway style theater and catering hall foor almost 4 decades before re-opening as a concert venue in 2012, has become sort of a home away from home for Phil & Friends. In fact, tonight, he'll be there again, celebrating birthday #78.  Of course, Phil's connection to the venue goes back to his days with the Grateful Dead, who played 17 shows at the Capitol between March 1970 and February 1971.  Jerry Garcia loved the venue, once proclaiming that "there’s only two theaters, man… that are set up pretty groovy all around for music and for smooth stage changes, good lighting and all that – the Fillmore and The Capitol Theatre. And those are the only two in the whole country.”   Littel wonder then that the lobby bar at the newly renovated Capitol is named Garcia's.  By the way, one other note on this Phil & Friends note - on guitar for Phil is legendary jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan, who just happened to graduate from Princeton in 1981, the same year I did!

Bruce Cockburn - 1988-03-14 - Ann Arbor, MI (SBD)

Bruce Cockburn was born in Canada in 1945, and established a strong following in that country after he began his musical career. He didn’t have much impact in the US until 1980 when his single, Wondering Where The Lions Are, went to #21 on the Billboard charts.His 1984 album Stealing Fire, produced the well know singles Lovers In A Dangerous Time and If I had A rocket Launcher. While I owned that disc, I soon lost tocuh with Cockburn’s music, moving on to other bands. I reconnected with his material, however, in the early 1990s, thanks to Jerry Garcia. At a concert at Madison Square Garden in November 1991, I heard Garcia play a wonderful tune called Waiting For A Miracle. Knowing it wasn’t a Jerry original, I did some research, and lo and behold, learned it was written by Cockburn about the revolution in Nicaragua. As long time readers of this blog know, I have always credited the Dead for introducing me to a host of music and styles that I might never otherwise learned about. This soundboard recording captures Cockburn in An Arbor on March 14, 1988, 3 decades ago this very day. Appropriately, the show closes with Cockburn singing Waiting For A Miracle.

When the Allman Brothers took the stage at the Warehouse in New Orleans on March 13, 1970 4 dozen years ago today, the band was just about 1/2 way between 2 milestones in their career. The first official Allman Brothers band concert took place on March 30, 1969 in Jacksonville, FL. In March, 1971, the Allmans played 2 shows that were recorded for what became one of rock's most legendary live albums, entitled simply At Fillmore East. This March 13 performance, their first at a venue they would play 14 times before it closed in 1973, is considered by both fans and band members alike as one of the finest shows the Allmans played  The Warehouse seemed to bring out the best in the Allmans.  Butch Trucks wrote that "the place was magic. It was an old cotton warehouse on the docks where they use to store cotton for shipping. It was built of wood and had the best acoustics and the best vibes of just about any venue we played back then."   Download this soundboard recording and see (and hear) for yourself.

Rolling Stones - 2003-03-12 - Yokohama, Japan (IEM Matrix)

In August 2002, the Rolling Stones launched their world wide LICKS tour, the name taken from the greatest hits album, Forty Licks, which would be released on October 1 of that year. The album was notable for 2 reasons. First, the 40 song double disc release commemorated the band's 40 year career. Second, and more significantly, the album was the first to combine the Stones' early releases with Decca alongside their later work that had been released on Virgin Records. While many critics wondered why the band needed yet another compilation, fans flocked to purchase 40 Licks, which reached the #2 position on both the US and UK album charts. The tour was also a world wide success, featuring 117 shows across 5 continents and grossing over $300 million in ticket sales before coming to an end in November 2003. This IEM Matrix recording captures the Stones in Yokahama, the 2nd of 6 nights in Japan, o n March 12, 2003, 15 years ago today.

In early 1973, Roger McGuinn disbanded The Byrds - twice! In February 1973, in order to facilitate a reunion of the original Byrds lineup, including David Crosby, McGuinn disbanded the Byrds line up he had been touring with. The original 5 Byrds then recorded and released an album which met little critical or commercial success, ending that endeavor before it even got off the ground. McGuinn wasted no time, however, getting on with his own career. He released his first solo album in June 1973, just a few months after the dual break ups. This FM broadcast captures McGuinn on his first solo tour,in Cmabridge, on may 11, 1974, 44 years ago today!

As mentioned earlier, we're trying to bring you shows this month from bands we're big fans of but don't post that frequently strictly because of a shortage of live tapes. Lone Justice, fronted by Maria Mckee, is one of those bands. a guiltily pleasure of mine since the very first time I heard the tunes Ways To be Wicked and Shelter. This excellent audience recording captures Lone Justice in Munich on March 9, 1987, 31 years ago today. The band was on tour in support of their second album Shelter, which was co-produced by Jimmy Iovine and Steve Van Zandt. Yet even those two rock heavy weights and an infectious title track, couldn’t help the band achieve the breakthrough commercial success they sought, The album stalled at #65 on the Billboard charts, while the single made it only to #47. A shame that the public didn’t take to this vastly under rated band. Download this one and you can see for yourself what everyone missed.

Jerry Garcia Band - 1980-03-08 - San Francisco, CA  (SBD Matrix)

As promised, here's another show from a member of the Grateful Dead flying solo. As February 1980 closed, and March 1980 began, the Jerry Garcia Band was in peak form. Their February 28 show from Kean College has been officially released on the album, After Midnight. The album takes its name from the legendary After Midnight > Eleanor Rigby > After Midnight jam that closed the first of the 2 shows the band played that night. At the show the next night, February 29, 1980, Jerry was joined for 2 songs, Tiger Rose and Promontory Rider, by his lyricist (and opening act), Robert Hunter. The March 1, 1980 concerts (I was at the early show) from the Capital Theatre in Passaic, NJ were released as Garcia Live, Volume 1. This soundboard matrix recording captures Jerry just 7 days after the Capital shows, back on his home turd in San Francisco. The 2nd set opens with yet another dazzling version of the After Midnight > Eleanor Rigby > After Midnight jam.

Peter Frampton - 2012-03-07 - Mesa, AZ (SBD)

Few discs in rock history have impacted rock & roll quite like the one Peter Frampton released on on January 6, 1976, That 2 disc live album, entitled Frampton Comes Alive came from out of nowhere to take the music world by storm. With songs such as Baby I Love Your Way, Show Me the Way, and the mammoth 14 minute long, Do You Feel Like We Do, which featured Frampton's distinctive talk box guitar, Frampton Comes Alive climbed to the top of the Billboard Charts, sold over 6 million copies, and was voted album of the years by readers of Rolling Stone. The album was so popular that it was still in the #14 position in the charts at the end of 1977, almost 2 years after its release. Framptom Comes Alive virtually took on a life of its own. The album defined Frampton for the rest of his career, casting a shadow over all his future endeavors. More significantly, the disc came to define rock and roll in the mid 1970's. FM rock stations began to play more album oriented rock (AOR), as Frampton's album and other similar work came to be called. Other bands attempted to copy Frampton Comes Alive, but unfortunately the results were usually excessive, over produced, and downright boring. Other rebelled against the AOR sound and movements such as disco, punk and new wave emerged. All that, from 1 album.
