For a band that released only one album, Seconds of Pleasure, Rockpile has an amazing legacy. What many folks don't know is that songs like Cruel to Be Kind, credited to Nick Lowe, and Girls Talk, credited to Dave Edmunds, were really recorded while they were working together as Rockpile! Because the two were on different labels, however, they could not credit the band! Moreover, it’s a bit strange, to say the least, that an English group that started as a new wave band also was known for its strong rockabilly influences. Unfortunately, Rockpile had a short lived career as tensions between Lowe and Edmunds split the band apart. This FM broadcast captures Rockpile in Amsterdam, on March 31, 1978, 43 years ago today.

Pat Benatar - 1997-03-30 - Las Vegas NV (SBD)

In June 1997, Pat Benatar, the 1980s Queen of Rock, released her 10th studio album, entitled Innamorata.  While the disc barely cracked the top 200 on the Billboard charts, peaking at 171, critic Howard Cohen called the disc "her most honest album, and it's her best."  In any event, despite the mixed commercial and critical feedback, Benatar launched a tour in support of the album.  This FM broadcast captures her a few month's prior to its release, in LAs vegas, on March 30, 1997, 2 dozen years ago today.

Well, we brought you shows from Joe Jackson and Grham Parker this month, so its only fitting we have one from the Third Angry Young Man of Punk and New Wave, Mr Elvis Costello. In January 1979, Costello released his 3rd album, Armed Forces, although during production the working title for the disc was Emotional Fascism. The disc continued Costello’s run of commercial and critical success. Armed Forces climbed to # 10 on the Billboard charts in the US, and did even better in the UK, reaching the #2 position. Famed critic Robert Christgau gave the album a grade of A-, while Rolling Stone wrote that it’s “an album that's a killer in several senses of the word.” In 2000, Q magazine placed Armed Forces at number 45 on its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. Then, in 2003, the album was ranked number 482 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. This soundboard recording captures Costello on tour in support of Armed Forces, in Boston on March 29, 1979, 42 years ago today.

The mid 1970s was a difficult time for Roy Orbison. He bounced from record label to record label, without producing any singles or albums that found their way on to the Billboard charts. Yet, he remained in the public eye in two ways.  First, numerous rock and country artists covered his tunes.  For example, Sonny James' version of Only the Lonely reached number #1 on the country music charts while Linda Ronstadt's co ver of Blue Bayou went to #3 on the rock charts. Second, he continued to tour regularly, even opening several shows for The Eagles in 1976.  This FM broadcast captures him in London on March 3, 1977, 44 years ago today.

Jerry Garcia Band - 1980-03-26 - Berkeley CA (Ex Aud)

The Jerry Garcia Band's 1980 tour was a magical ride, as evidenced by the fact that 2 shows from the run were officially released. The February 28 show from Kean College has been released on the album, After Midnight, which takes its name from the legendary After Midnight > Eleanor Rigby > After Midnight jam that closed the first of the 2 shows the band played that night. The March 1, 1980 concerts (I was at the early show) from the Capital Theatre in Passaic, NJ were so good that they were selected to be the first release in the Garcia Live series. This excellent recording captures Garcia during that run, back on his home turf, in Berkeley on match 26, 1980, 41 years ago today.

Graham Parker - 1977-03-25 - Nottingham UK (SBD) 

In the late 1970's, as the punk and new wave scene flourished, the UK produced the 3 angry men of rock and roll - Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson and Graham Parker. Of the 3, Graham Parker often gets over looked, which is a shame. His first two albums, Howling Wind and Heat Treatment, both released in 1976, were widely hailed by critics. For example, Robert Christgau gave both discs a grade of A! In March 1979, Parker released his masterpiece, Squeezing Out Sparks. The album was not only a critical success, but also a commercial one, as the disc cracked the top 40 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures Parker between Heat Treatment and Squeezing Out Sparks, i Nottingham on March 25, 1977, 44 years ago today. Led Zeppelin - 1975-03-24 - Los Angeles CA (SBD)

During the decade of the 1970s. one band towered above all others - the mighty Led Zeppelin. Their 1975 tour found the band at the peak of their powers, both in the studio and on stage. As the tour launched, Led Zep released the double album Physical Graffiti, which went to #1 on the charts in both the US and UK. The disc also received strong critical reviews. Billboard magazine gave the disc 5 stars while Rolling stone wrote that Physical Graffiti was "the band's Tommy, Beggar's Banquet and Sgt. Pepper rolled into one." On stage, after some early issues due to Page having suffered a broken finger and Plant contacting the flu, the band rounded into form, playing one memorable show after another. In fact, by the end of the run, Plant proclaimed "this has been our most successful tour on every level and I had a great time all the way through." This soundboard recording captures Led Zep in Los Angeles on March 24, 1975, 46 years ago today. Unfortunately, it's a partial show, but some Led Zep is better than none!

In January 2019, Joe Jackson released his 19th studio album, entitled Fool.  Forty years earlier, in 1979. Jackson had burst on the music scene with not one but 2 album releases, Look Sharp and I'm The Man, as good a 1-2 debut punch as you may find in rock history. Of course, in those 4 decades, Jackson's style and music changed significantly, as he moved from punk and new wave to jazz to Cole Porter  and beyond! One thing stayed the same during that time, however, namely the man on bass, the one and only Graham Maby! This IEM recording captures Jackson on tour in support of Fool, in Italy on March 23, 2019, 2 years ago today.

In August 1986, Crowded House released their self titled debut album, which garnered only limited attention initially. In December 1986, however, the 4th single from the album, Don't Dream It's Over, became a huge hit, climbing to #2 on the Billboard charts and carrying the album up to #12. The follow up single, Something So Strong, also became a top 10 hit in the US, reaching #7 on the Billboard charts. In the spring of 1976, Paul McCartney, with his new band Wings, toured the United States for the first time since the Beatles last show in San Francisco in 1966. It was a historic event, commemorated afterwards by a then unheard of release of a 3 album set called Wings Over America. Wings played 2 nights at Madison Square Garden, on Monday May 24 and Tuesday May 25. I was a junior in high school, so my buddies and I couldn't go - school night! Not that we were all that upset. Rumors abounded that the Beatles were on the verge on re-uniting (it had only been 6 years since the break up), so we figured why see 1/4 of the group when it would just be a matter of time before you could see them in their entirety. As we know, the rumors never came true, and just 4 years later, in 1980, John Lennon was tragically shot and killed. Now looking back, its clear I should have found a way to go as Wings never again toured the US. I missed out on history.  About 6 weeks prior to that historic US tour, McCartney and Wings played 5 dates in Europe, hitting 4 countries - Denmark, Germany,Netherlands and France - in just 6 days. This excellent audience recording captures night 2 in Denmark, on March 21, 1976, 45 years ago today. Note - the vocals on this one are a tad bit distant but otherwise soounds great.

In June 1972, the Eagles released their self titled debut album to critical acclaim and commercial success. Three singles from the album, Peaceful Easy Feeling, Witchy Women and Take It Easy, all hit the top 25 on the Billboard charts. Moreover, the album played a key role in popularizing a new 1970s musical genre know as the Southern California country rock sound. In early 1973, the Eagles returned to England, where they had recorded their debut album, to again team with producer Glyn Johns, on their second album. While in London, they did a show for BBC Television on March 20, 1973, 4 dozen years ago today, which is captured in this soundboard recording. The set features several songs from their first album, including all 3 hit singles, as well as 2 tracks from their soon to be released second disc, Out of Control and Saturday Night.  Interestingly, the Eagles do not play the 2 best known songs from that 2nd disc, the title track, Desperado, and Tequila Sunrise. Perhaps those tunes were not yet complete, as the album was not released until a month after this performance. In any event, download this show to catch the Eagles near the very beginning of their career.

Southside Johnny - 2016-03-19 - Scranton, PA (SBD Matrix)

The New Jersey music scene rose to prominence in 1975 thanks to Bruce Springsteen. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the 2nd most famous act to emerge from that scene. Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences. All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band. Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. While Southside never rose to the prominence that Springsteen achieved, the band remained a vibrant live force in the 1990s and beyond, touring almost non stop! In fact, just last month here in his home state, Southside hosted a socially distanced, drive in concert in the midst of the pandemic,  having everyone show up, and stay, in their cars, sort of like the old drive in movie. In any event, this soundboard matrix recording captures Southside and the Jukes in Scranton, on March 19, 2016, 5 years ago today.

Steve Winwood - 2004-03-16 - New York, NY (SBD)

On March 15, 2004, Steve Winwood was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of Traffic in a ceremony held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. Also inducted that year were Bob Seger, George Harrison, Jackson Browne, Prince, The Dells and ZZ Top. Dave Matthews handled the induction speech, though many felt Eric Clapton should have been accorded the honor due to his work with Winwood in Blind Faith.  In any event, the next night, March 16, 2004, 17 years ago toay, Winwood was back on stage, this time at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden for the 4th Annual Jammy Awards! He was the recipient of that year's Lifetime Achievement Award. Chris Robinson presented the award. In his brief acceptance speech, Winwood exclaimed, "It's nice to know I've been jamming for the past forty years!" This soundboard recording captures Winwood's set that night, featuring tunes from his long storied career, including his time with the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and his solo efforts. The Police - 1979-03-15 - Kansas City, KS (FM) 

As the decade of the 1970s came to a close, a host of punk and new wave bands rose to prominence. While many would reach the peak of their fame in the 1980s, they paid their dues in the 1970s. For example, in early 1979, The Police went on tour in North America in support of their debut album, Outlandos d’Amour. The tour kicked off on March 1 at the legendary Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles and ran until May 25, with the band criss-crossing the US and Canada. They often played 2 shows a night, and rarely took a day off. Given that the album had flopped when initially released, the band felt compelled to tour relentlessly in hopes of gaining exposure for themselves and airplay for their songs. The strategy seemed to work, as the album eventually climbed to the #23 position on the Billboard charts in the US, and rose all the way to the #2 position in the UK. In addition, 3 singles from the disc – Roxanne, Can’t Stand Losing You and So Lonely - charted in the top 20 in the UK in 1979. Roxanne also climbed to the #32 spot on the US Billboard charts. This FM broadcast captures the band just 14 days after the start of the tour, on March 15, 1979, 42 years ago today.

After a series of hard rocking albums with Crazy Horse in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Neil Young returned to his acoustic roots with 1992’s disc, Harvest Moon. The album was Neil’s 20th studio disc, and in name, tone, and supporting cast, harkened back to his landmark recording Harvest, released 2 decades prior. Ben Keith, Tim Drummond and Kenny Buttrey backed Neil on Harvest Moon, just as they had on Harvest. Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor made guest appearances on the 1992 disc, just as they had on its 1972 predecessor. Interestingly, 3 folks who played on Harvest that did not appear on Harvest Moon were Neil’s sometime band mates, Crosby, Stills and Nash. In any event, Harvest Moon climbed to #16 on the Billboard charts, and received a four star review from Rolling Stone. AllMusic wrote that the title track was “positively gorgeous". In addition, Classic Rock Review named Harvest Moon its album of the year for 1992. This soundboard recording captures Neil at Farm Aid 5, on March 14, 1992, 31 years ago today, playing 3 tunes from Harvest Moon, along with 2 classics from Harvest, Old Man and Heart of Gold.

Marshall Tucker Band - 1975-03-13 - New Orleans, LA (FM) 

One of the many genres of rock music that emerged during the 1970s was Southern Rock. While the Allman Brothers were the clear leaders in the rise of Southern Rock, other artists such as Charlie Daniels, The Outlaws, Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special and The Marshall Tucker Band (MTB) also thrived during the 1970s. The MTB released 8 albums in the 1970's, and all but one made the top 40 on the Billboard charts. They released their highest charting album, Searching For A Rainbow, in August 1975. The disc went to #15, and included the single Fire On The Mountain, which climbed to #38 on the charts. Only the single Heard It In A Love Song, which went to #14 in 1977, would perform better than Fire On The Mountain. This FM broadcast captures the MTB just a few months before the release of that album, in New Orleans, on March 13, 1975, 46 years ago today.

In 1977, Dennis Erokan, publisher of Bay Area Music magazine, founded the Bammies, of Bay Area Music Awards, designed to recognize the best musicians and musical performances by San Francisco area bands. The Bammies ran for about 20 years, finally fizzling out in 1997. Each year's awards ceremony was highlighted by musical performances, and would inevitably end with everyone onstage together for a free-for-all jam session. This FM broadcast captures the Grateful Dead & friends at the 11 Annual Bammies on March 12, 1988, 33 years ago today. The Dead swept almost all the awards that night, on the heels of the commercial and critical success of the album In The Dark and the single Touch of Grey in 1987.

Many bands from the 1960's took extended time off during the 1970s. The Grateful Dead, for example, took a break from touring from October 1974 to Spring 1976. During the Dead's hiatus, Bob Weir joined his long time pal, Matthew Kelly in the band Kingfish. Weir's arrival had two major impacts on the band, which were both a blessing and a curse. First, Kingfish finally got a recording contract, thanks to the Grateful Dead's new label, Round Records. Second, from that point in they were often identified as Bob Weir's backing band. Yet, as can be seen from this show, an FM Broadcast from 45 years ago today, March 11, 1976, the band only included 3 Grateful Dead tunes in their set list. So, clearly they had their own unique sound. Download this one and take a listen for yourself.

Gregg Allman - 1987-03-10 - Buffalo, NY (SBD)

In 1982, the Allman Brothers broke up, unable to operate as band anymore due to tensions, alcohol and drugs. Betts explained that "we broke up in '82 because we decided we better just back out or we would ruin what was left of the band’s image." For most of the next 5 years, Gregg Allman wandered around in a drunken haze, unable or unwilling to make new music. He later explained that “No two ways about it, the ’80s were rough. [...] It was seven years of going, "What is it that I do?” Being self-employed your whole life, that becomes a certain rock, a reinforcement. When that’s gone, not only are you bored stiff, but you just want to cry—"What do I do? I know I used to serve a purpose." In 1987, somehow, Allman again found that purpose, recording a solo album for Epic Records appropriately entitled I'm No Angel. The title track became a top 40 hit, and Allman went on tour in support of the disc. This FM broadcast captures him during that tour, in Buffalo on March 10, 1987, 34 years ago today. By the way, the success of that album brought new attention to the Allman Brothers, which was further reinforced 2 years later by the release of the box set Dreams, celebrating the band's 20th anniversary. As the 1980s closed, the Allman Brothers would reform, and stay together for another 30 plus years!

Following the collapse of Manassas and just prior to the monumental 1974 CSNY reunion tour, Stephen Stills hit the road with one of the hardest rocking bands he ever assembled. Two of the most memorable nights of the tour occurred on March 8th and 9th, when Stills and the band took to the stage of Chicago's Auditorium Theatre. These two shows were recorded by the King Biscuit Flower Hour for this broadcast later that year. Additional material - not from the broadcast -  from those same two shows for the Stills Live album released the following year.  This FM broadcast captures night 2 in Chicago, on March 9, 1974, 4 dozen years ago today.

In December 1973, Bachman-Turner Overdrive released their 2nd album, the appropriately, if not all that originally, titled Bachman-Turner Overdrive II, The disc became a huge hit in the US, climbing to #4 on the Billboard charts. The album also yielded two of the band's best known and most successful singles, Let It Ride and Takin' Care of Business, which went to #23 and #12, respectively, on the Billboard charts.  This FM broadcast captures the band just 3 months after the release of BTO II, in Chicago, on March 8, 1974, 47 years ago today.
