Crossroads Guitar Festival - 2007-07-28 - Bridgeview, IL (Part 4) (SBD)

Here's our 4th post of the day, containing parts 7, 8 and 9 of the 2007 Crossroads Festival, from July 28, 2007, 18 years ago this very day. First, Jeff Beck plays a sensational set, including a stunning reinvention of the Beatles’ A Day in the Life, in which he recreates all the elaborate vocal melodies and orchestrations with little more than the six strings of his guitar. Then, EC himself took the stage, for a set heavy on music from Derek and the Dominos. Derek Trucks sat in for the entire set, helping to push Clapton to be at his best. EC also got some help from Robbie Robertson for 2 songs, before reuniting with Blind Faith compatriot, Steve Winwood! And how fitting that they end their set with Crossroads! After that, Chicago blues Buddy Guy took the stage followed a 3 song finale featuring all the day's performers! A veritable legion of Guitar Gods all on stage at once!

In 1999, Eric Clapton launched the Crossroads Guitar Festival to raise money for the drug treatment facility he had established in Antigua. Each iteration of the festival features an amazing array of acts, all hand picked by Slow Hand himself! This FM Broadcast captures the 2004 festival, from Dallas, on June 6, 2004, 21 years ago today.

2005 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2005-03-14 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 2005 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductions featured something old and something new.  Jerry Lee Lewis and Bo Diddley commemorated the 50th anniversay of rock & roll with some help from Eric Clapton and the late Robbie Robertson. EC also sat in with Buddy Guy, as the legendary bluesman took his rightful place in the hall after far too long a wait (he'd been eligible since 1993!). U2 and The Pretenders highlighted the inductions, with the former getting some help from Bruce Springsteen and the latter from Neil Young.

Eric Clapton - 1990 - #1: In 1987, Eric Clapton opened the year with a series of concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London. That tradition would last for another 9 years, until 1996. Over that decade, EC played countless memorable shows at the RAH.  Highlights from the 1990 and 1991 runs were captured on the live album 24 Nights. While 24 Nights is a wonderful album, I’ve never been a big fan of live discs that pick and choose songs from different nights on the tour. Every concert has its own unique feel and rhythm and live compilation albums can never capture that energy or emotion. That’s why we all love bootlegs, because we get to hear the show exactly as it happened, spectacular moments, unexpected surprises and even outright flubs. In that vein, this soundboard recording captured Slowhand at the RAH on February 3, 1990, 3 decades ago this very day.  This is the first of 3 consecutive nights featuring EC playing the blues (That year, in addition to Blues Nights, EC played some shows with his standard 4 piece band and others backed by a full orchestra!)  Download this one, then come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this Same Tour, Different Show set.

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Buddy Guy - 1989-07-30 - Chicago, IL (SBD)

One final post this month dedicated to the great blues guitarists of the rock and roll era. Buddy Guy has been called the bridge between the blues and rock and roll. He is one of the historic links between Chicago electric blues pioneers Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf and rock  guitarists such as Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page , Keith Richards and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Vaughan once stated that "Without Buddy Guy, there would be no Stevie Ray Vaughan."   Guy was ranked At #30 in Rolling Stones 2003 list  of the top 100 guitarists and #23 on the magazine's 2011 list.  This soundboard recording captures Guy along with one of the men he inspired, Stevie Ray Vaughn on July 30, 1989, 28 years ago today.  Guy was cerebrating his 53rd birthda at his club, Legends, in Chicago and SRV showed up to wish him well!
