Grateful Dead - 1970-01-30 - New Orleans, LA (SBD)

GD 1970 - Back to Back - #1: On January 31, 1970, upon returning to their hotel in New Orleans after a concert at The Warehouse with Fleetwood Mac, the Grateful Dead were greeted with an unpleasant surprise. The police, search warrants in hand, were waiting for the band and arrested them for possession of illegal drugs. As Jerry Garcia put it  "the southern cops, they had just what they wanted: hippies. Oh, boy.”  The incident would inspire a legendary verse in the tune Truckin' - "busted, down on Bourbon Street, Set up, like a bowlin’ pin, Knocked down, it gets to wearin’ thin, they just won't let you be, oh no".  Fortunately, no one in the band stayed in jail long, as the Dead were back on stage at The Warehouse the next night, playing a concert billed as a benefit to raise funds for their legal defense. This soundboard captures the show the night before their arrest, on January 30, 1970, 55 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back to Back set.

Elvis Presley - 1974-01-27 - Las Vegas, NV (dinner) (SBD)

Elvis 1974 - Back To Back - #1:  On January 26, 1974, Elvis kicked off his annual winter residency at Las Vegas Hilton, which would run until February 9.  The King would play 29 shows over that span, with most nights featuring both a dinner and a midnight engagment.  Elvis was in good form for this run, unlike some of his future stints in Vegas, with his on going addictions at least held at bay for the time being, though his weight gain was quite obvious. Variety wrote "A chubby Elvis Presley is in the throes of romping through his various exercises with playful glee, animal spirits and bemused kissing games with ringside cuties this fortnight …  Certainly the extra poundage doesn’t interfere with his familiar type of belting or mooning ballads. His quips and asides are many, humorous in effect and help to light up delivery of some 15 or more tunes ranging from early rockers to religious and solemn ‘American Trilogy."  This soundboard recording captures the dinner show from January 27, 1974, 51 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this Back To Back set.

Los Lobos - 2024-01-26 - Kilauea, Kaua'i, HI (SBD Matrix)

Los Lobos 2024 - Back To Back - #1:  In 1973, original members David Hidalgo, Louie Pérez, Cesar Rosas and Conrad Lozano began their career playing revved-up versions of Mexican folk music in restaurants and at parties. In 1984, the group added saxophonist Steve Berlin, released its full-length, major-label debut, How Will the Wolf Survive?, and was named Artist Of The Year by Rolling Stone magazine. Then in 1987, their cover went to #1 on the Billboard charts whil etheir album By Light of The Moon received rave critical reviews, with Rolling Stone, All Music, and Robert Christgau, just to name 3, all singing its praises. While Los Lobos never agian achieved that level of commercial and crtical acclaim, they have remained a constant on the music scene, releasin over a dozen albums and developing a reputation for their outastanding live performances.  The 50th anniverary tour took them to Hawaii for two shows in early 2024.  This soundboard matrix recording capturs night 1, on Janaury 26, 20204, just a year ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Black Crowes - 1995-01-25 - Berlin, Germany (FM)

Black Crowes 1995 - Back to Back - #1: In November 1994, The Black Crowes released their 3rd album, entitled Amorica. The album cover, which featured a picture taken from a 1976 bi-centennial edition of Hustler that showed a bikini bottom that failed to cover all of a women’s pubic hair, generated a host of controversy. Some retailers refused to carry the album until the record company re-issued the disc with an alternate cover. Despite the controversy - or maybe because of it - Amorica climbed to #11 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures the Black Crowes on tour in support of their controversial album in Berlin on January 25, 1995, 30 years ago today. Grateful Dead - 1979-01-17 - New Haven, CT (SBD)

Grateful Dead 1979 - Back To Back - #1: As the Grateful Dead swung through the East Coast in January 1979, make up dates for shows cancelled in late 1978 due to Jerry Garcia getting sick, the band was on the cusp on the end of an era.  By February, Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux, who had joined the band in late 1971, would be gone. While the duo had been with the band through some of its peak years - 1972-1974, and 1976-1977, they were both battling addiction. Keith's playing had dropped off substantially, as he was dealing with both heroin and alcohol dependency. Donna was also drinking heavily.  Depending on the source you choose, either Keith and Donna decided to leave the band to get their lives in order and pursue new musical directions, or the band fired them as they could no longer meaningfully contribute to the group's sound. Whatever the truth, this soundboard recording from New Haven frm November 17, 1979, 46 years ago today, captures Keith & Donna during their last tour with the Dead.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set

The Beatles - 1964-01-16 - Paris, France (day) (SBD)

Beatles 1964 - Back To Back - #1: Less than a month before their historic appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show that officially brought Beatlemania to America, the Beatles were "across the pond' in Paris, lauching an 18 day run at the Olympia Theatre,  They would perform twice, and sometimes 3 times, each day, topping a 9 act bill that included French singer Sylvie Vartan or America's Trini Lopez.  The set list featured From Me To You, Roll Over Beethoven, She Loves You, This Boy, Boys, I Want To Hold Your Hand, Twist And Shout and Long Tall Sally, although for some shows, particularly the matinée performances, they played fewer tunes,.  The Olympia, a classic old world theater, was not quite equipped for modern rock & roll, with the band's amps often overloading and blowing out fuses!  This soundboard recording captures the day show from Janaury 16, 1964, 61 years ago today.  Stop back later today for the evening performance which is the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

The Airplane 1966 - Back To Back - #1: It’s hard to think about the Jefferson Airplane with out visualizing Grace Slick out front of the band, the strong female lead singer embodying the new freedoms women were seeking as a cultural revolution swept across the US in the late 1960s. Grace’s powerful voice helped propel songs such as White Rabbit and Somebody To Love into the Billboard Top 10. Yet, before Grace, there was Singe. Signe Toly Anderson, the original female vocalist of the Jefferson Airplane. Signe left the band in October 1966, a few months after the birth of her daughter. Her last show was October 16. The next night Grace Slick took the stage with the Airplane, and the rest, as they say. is history.  This soundboard recording captures the Airplane with Signe still on vocals in Vancouver on January 14, 1966, 59 years ago today,  Download this one, then comeback tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

Joe Russo's Almost Dead - 2018-01-12 - Scranton, PA (SBD Matrix)

JRAD 2018 - Back To Back - #1: Formed in 2013, Joe Russo's Almost Dead (JRAD) are one of the many Grateful Dead offshoots and cover bands that emerged in the wake of Jerry Garcia's death in 1995. Of course, JRAD has a bit more credibility tha most such bands since their leader, drummer Joe Russo, was part of Furthur with Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, as well as a member of the 2014 line up of Phil & Friends. This soundboard matrix recording captures JRAD on January 12, 2018,7 years ago today, at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY, a very appropriate venue for a Dead releated band.  Afterall, in recent years Phil Lesh has tended to celebrate his birthday there, while the theater's bar is named Garcia's, in tribute to the departed lead gutarist of the Grateful Dead!  Download this one, then come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this back to back set.
