I saw Hall & Oates twice in the late 1970s, both times at the Garden State Art Center - my second concert ever on June 23, 1977 and then again on September 14, 1978. While my buddies and I were big fans of the songs Sara Smile and She's Gone. with the exception of Rich Girl, I don't really care for any of the 6 tunes that the duo took to #1 on the Billboard charts. In any event, soon after seeing them for the 2nd time, my musical tastes moved in new directions.

In early 1976, Hall & Oates released the single Sara Smile, on RCA records, which became the group’s first top 10 hit. Then in July, their former record company, Atlantic, re-released the single She’s Gone, hoping to capitalize on the success of Sara Smile. It worked, as the song climbed to #7 on the Billboard charts. RCA had the last laugh, however, when the band’s next single, Rich Girl, from the 1976 album, Bigger Than Both of Us, became the duo’s first number one hit! This soundboard recording captures Hall & Oates during their climb to the top of the charts, in London on May 18, 1976, a half century ago today.

I saw Hall & Oates twice in the late 1970s, both times at the Garden State Art Center - my second concert ever in June 1977 and then again in September 1978. While my buddies and I were big fans of the songs Sara Smile and She's Gone, with the exception of Rich Girl, I don't really care for any of the 6 tunes that the duo took to #1 on the Billboard charts. In any event, soon after seeing them for the 2nd time, my musical tastes moved in new directions. 

Despite my lack of interest in Hall & Oates post 1978, the band soared to new heights, scoring five #1 hits in the early 1980s. This FM broadcast captures the band near the start of that run of commercial success, on December 7, 1979, 46 years ago today, in Boston.

1970s - #5: In several posts here at So Many Roads, we’ve discussed the Live From The Record Plant series of shows that KSAN-FM would broadcast each week during the early 1970s. Those programs, which originated from Sausalito CA, featured rock artists playing live before a small studio audience. Not to be outdone, the East Coast had a similar series of shows broadcast on WLIR-FM from Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead NY. The roster for those broadcasts included Billy Joel, Lou Reed, Peter Frampton, Little Feat, The Band, Jackson Browne, The Doobie Brothers, and the Marshall Tucker Band, just to name a few. This WLIR-FM broadcast from the Ultrasonic Studios features Hall & Oates, from November 18, 1973, 52 years ago today. The dDuo feature tracks from their recently released album, abandoned Lunceonette, including the sing;e She's Gone, which initially did not farewell on the charts, but when re-released in 1976, climbed all the way to the #7 spot on the charts.

Live Aid - 1985-07-13 - London, UK & Philadelphia, PA (Part  3) (FM)

Welcome to our 3rd and final post of the FM Broadcast of Live Aid from July 13, 1985, 4 decades  ago today.  This post features the finales at both Wembley and JFK. In London, Paul McCartney played Let It Be, but was not joined on stage by George and Ringo, despite a flurry of rumors. In fact, at one point, when Geldorf and Bowie walked on stage to sing back up for Paul, an announcer briefly yelled "there will be a reunion" before quickly correcting himself! Wembley closed with a rendition of Do You Know Its Christmas by all the performers, after which Sir Paul and Pete Towshend triumphantly hoisted Geldorf up on their shoulders. At JFK, the final acts included Eric Clapton making a triumphant return to the world stage; Phil Collins arriving from London via the Concorde to play a solo set, then playing drums for a reunion of the 3 surviving members of Led Zeppelin; and a solo set by Neil Young followed by his reunion by Crosby, Stills, and Nash. With Mick Jagger and Keith Richards feuding at the time, the Rolling Stones did not appear. Instead, Jagger played with Tina Tuner, while Richards and fellow Rolling Stone, Ron Wood, backed Bob Dylan, the last performer at JFK. Dylan stirred controversy with his remarks about redirecting some of the money to US farmers, which would lead to the first Farm Aid concerts. Live Aid ended with the all star finale at JFK playing We Are the World, the US song written for the event. An amazing and memorable day! I watched and listened to all of it, and had dozens of Maxell tapes of the show. Now we all have a digital recording of one of the most memorable events in rock history, an event that truly showed the power of rock music to make a difference. I was a big fan of the tune She's Gone, which when re-released in 1976, went to #7 on the Billboard charts. I also really enjoyed the songs Sara Smile, which went to #4 on the Billboard charts, and Rich Girl, which became the duo's first #1 hit. I saw the band for a 2nd time on September 14, 1978, also at the Arts Center. At that point, the duo's sound started to take on more of a pop music feel, and I lost interest in them. Despite my lack of enthusiasm for the new direction, the band soared to new heights, scoring five #1 hits in the early 1980s. 1975 - In August 1975, Hall & Oates released thier 4th album, and first with RCA, which was simply titled, Daryl Hall & John Oates.  fans often refer to the disc as the "Silver" album because of the metallic cover.  Whil ethe disc did not get alot of attention, it eventually spawned the single Sara Smile, which went to #4 on the Billboard charts, which was the band's big commercial breakthrough. Then in July, their former record company, Atlantic, re-released the single She’s Gone, hoping to capitalize on the success of Sara Smile. It worked, as the song climbed to #7 on the Billboard charts. While my buddies and I were big fans of the songs Sara Smile and She's Gone. with the exception of Rich Girl, I don't really care for any of the 6 tunes that the duo took to #1 on the Billboard charts. In any event, soon after seeing them for the 2nd time, my musical tastes moved in new directions. Believe it or not, the 2nd concert I ever attended was Hall & Oates on June 23, 1977 at the Garden State (now the PNC Bank) Arts Center in Holmdel NJ. I was a big fan of the tune She's Gone, which when re-released in 1976, went to #7 on the Billboard charts. I also really enjoyed the songs Sara Smile, which went to #4 on the Billboard charts, and Rich Girl, which became the duo's first #1 hit. I saw the band for a 2nd time on September 14, 1978, also at the Arts Center. At that point, the duo's sound started to take on more of a pop music feel, and I lost interest in them. Despite my lack of enthusiasm for the new direction, the band soared to new heights, scoring five #1 hits in the early 1980s. This FM broadcast captures the band at the start of that run of commercial success, on August 19, 1980, 38 years ago today, in Pittsburgh.

Hall and Oates have always been part of a musical style known as "blue eyed soul", a term coined in the 1960s to describe R&B and soul music played by white artists. such bands often played songs recorded in a style similar to music found on the predominantly black Motown and Stax labels.  Little wonder then, that during the New Year's Eve 1978 concert, 338 years ago today in Pittsburgh, Hall and Oates performed a cover of The Temptation's number one single from 1965, My Girl.
