The Silver Clef Award Winners Concert  - 1990-06-30 - Knebworth, UK (SBD)

Knebworth House in England, an estate from the 15th century, has been the site of major rock festivals since 1974 (go here for more info) when the Allman Brothers drew a crowd of 60,000.  In 1979, Led Zeppelin made their return two live performing with 2 concerts at Knebworth. The Rolling Stones, Queen, Genesis and Van Morrison, as well as dozens of other rock acts, also have graced the stage at Knebworth. On June 30, 1990, 35 years ago today, Knebworth hosted the Silver Clef Awards for outstanding contributions to music in the UK, resulting in an incredible star studded line up, including Eric Clapton, Elton John, Mark Knopfler, Pink Floyd, Robert Plant, Jimmie Page and Sir Paul McCartney. The concert was so big that it was broadcast on the radio world wide. WNEW-FM in NY carried the broadcast, and I filled several Maxell tapes with the historic performances from that show. Of course, then CD's happened, and the tapes sat in a box, as did my 2 Nakamichi tape players! Fortunately, thanks to the digital age, we now have the full FM broadcast of that historic show.

1980s - #2: When Eric Clapton went out on the road in 1988, he was accompanied by another guitarist of some note. Mark Knopfler, on a break from Dire Straits, backed EC throughout the year, a rare case of one artist putting aside his ego to perform with another musician that he admired. Knopfler did step out front once each night, during the encores, to play Money For Nothing from his days with Dire Straits. This soundboard (or excelelnt audience) recording captures EC with a little help from Knopfler on February 7, 1988, 35 years ago today, in Guildford.

Eric Clapton – 1989-02-03 – London (SBD)

As mentioned in earlier posts, in 1987 Eric Clapton began an annual tradition of starting the year with a series of concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London. In 1989, he played 12 shows at that venue. For the first 6, EC was joined on stage by Nathan East on Bass, Greg Philliganes on keyboards and Phil Collins on drums. For the last 6 shows, however, the band line up changed significantly. First, Steve Ferrone replaced Collins on drums and Alan Clark stepped in for Philliganes on keyboards. Second, EC added Ray Cooper on percussion, and Katie Kissoon and Tessa Niles on backing vocals. Finally, and most significantly, Mark Knopfler, of Dire Straits fame, joined Eric on guitar. This soundboard recording from the February 3, 1989 show, 33 years ago today, captures EC on the last night of that year's Royal Albert Hall run.

EC & MK 1987 - Back to Back- #2: Welcome to post #2 in our Back to Back to Back set featuring Eric Clapton during his first run of shows at the Royal Albert Hall, a soundboard recording from january 11, 1987, 34 years ago today!. These shows were the warm up for his 1987 world tour which featured EC playing songs from August, which had been released in November 1986. The album, produced by Phil Collins, became EC's best selling disc, yielding 3 Billboard top 10 singles, Miss You at #9, Tearing Us Apart at #5 and It's In The Way That You Use It, which reached #1 thanks to being part of the sound track to the Tom Cruise movie, The Color of Money. Producer Phil became drummer Phil at this show, joining Clapton on stage. Mark Knopfler also sat in again. Download this one now, then come back tomorrow for closing night from the RAH.

EC & MK 1987 - Back to Back- #1: Opened in March 1871, The Royal Albert Hall was built to fulfill the vision of Prince Albert of a 'Central Hall' that would be used to promote understanding and appreciation of the Arts and Sciences. Standing at at the heart of the South Kensington estate, the RAH would be surrounded by museums and other places of learning. Estimates are that the venue has hosted over 150,000 different events, from classical concerts to plays to operas to movie premiers. In the rock era, Eric Clapton has been tied to the RAH throughout his storied career. Cream played their farewell gigs at the hall in 1968, as well as their initial reunion shows in 2005. In 1987, Clapton played a series of shows at the RAH to open a year, a tradition which would continue for another 9 years until 1996. This soundboard recording captures EC on January 10, 1987, 34 years ago today, backed by his then new band of Nathan East on bass, Greg Phillinganes on keyboards and Steve Ferrone on drums. When Slowhand launched his North American tour on September 1, 1988, Mark Knopfler was on board to help out on guitar and vocals. Then, when Eric went to Japan for 5 dates in late October/early November, not only did Knopfler make the trip, but Elton John joined the band as well. It's not often that 3 giants of rock and roll share the stage together, and even more rare to have 2 submerge their egos to play a supporting role. While the set list each night featured primarily music from the entire breadth of EC’s career, it also allowed both Knopfler and Elton to step out front on a few of their own tunes. This excellent audience recording captures the trio in Nagoya on October 31, 1988, 32 years ago today.

The Prince's Trust All Star Rock Concert  - 1986-06-20 - London UK (SBD)

Founded in 1976 by Charles, the Prince of Wales, The Prince's Trust is a charity in the UK which helps vulnerable young people get their lives on track. It supports 11 to 30 year-olds who are unemployed and those struggling at school and at risk of exclusion. Many of the young people helped by The Trust are in or leaving care, facing issues such as homelessness or mental health problems, or have been in trouble with the law.  To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the charity, and help raise funds for the work it does, rock royalty turned out in force to support British royalty.  Held on June 20, 1986, 32 years ago today, at Wembley Arena,, as captured in this FM broadcast, The Prince's Trust All Star Rock Concert featured such luminaries as Elton John, Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Rod Stewarr, David Bowie, Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney, plus a host more!.  For McCartney, it was just his 2nd live performance since the last Wings Tour in 1979, the first having been his appearance at Li ve Aid a year before.

1990s - #3 - In April 1996, Mark Knopfler, formerly of Dire Straits, went on the road in support of his debut solo album, Golden Heart, which he released on March 26 of that year. The tour encompassed 84 concerts in 66 cities, all in Europe, including this show on June 8, 1996, 16 years ago today, in Hamburg. Knopfler had disbanded Dire Straits in 1995, and the band’s last tour had been in 1992. His set list included several Dire Straits classics, such as Sultans of Swing, Romeo & Juliet, Money For Nothing and Walk of Life, but his focus was his new solo material. In fact, as the years have passed, Knopfler’s solo tours have drawn less and less on his Dire Straits heritage. Download this soundboard recording to hear Knopfler as he takes his first steps as a solo artist.
