1994: In 1994, Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody of The Allman Brothers Band launched a side project called Gov’t Mule. Haynes and Woody, who were fans of power trios such as Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, recruited Matt Abts to handle the drums. The new band, affectionately known to its fans as The Mule, released their self titled debut album in October 1995. This soundboard recording captures them a little over a year prior to the release of that disc, on September 10, 1994, 32 years ago today, at Wetlands in New York City.

Steely Dan - 1994-09-02 - Dallas, TX (SBD)

After an Independence Day concert in Santa Monica in 1974, Steely Dan retired from touring to focus on studio recordings. Band leaders Walter Becker and Donald Fagan had tired of the grind associated with live performing and preferred to focus on song writing and album production. After producing 4 more albums (Kati Lied, The Royal Scam, Aja & Gaucho) between 1975 and 1980, Becker and Fagan announced a split in their partnership in June 1981. It would be another 12 years before the two would formally reunite, ironically, to produce 2 solo albums. Becker produced Fagan’s album Kamakiriad, while Fagan returned the favor by serving as co-producer on Becker’s 11 Tracks of Whack. Even more irony followed, as the two then reformed Steely Dan, not to record an album, but to go on tour! While their 2 solo albums didn’t sell all that well, their live concerts received rave reviews. They had such a good time on the road in 1993, they “did it again’ in 1994. This soundboard recording captures the band on September 2, 1994, 32 years ago today, in Dallas.

The Band - 1994-08-26 -Asbury Park NJ (FM) 

I only saw The Band live just twice, both times in 1985. The first concert, in August at Pier 84 in New York, they were the lead in for CSN. The 2nd show, in October, they headlined at one of their favorite venues, the Lone Star Cafe. 

This post fast fowards 9 years after I saw them to 1994, which proved to be quite a magical year for The Band. Original members Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson continued to tour relentlessly, incorporating tunes from their 1993 album Jericho into their set list. Among the songs from that disc was a unique cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Atlantic City. They played at Woodstock 1994 in August, 25 years after they had played the original festival in 1969. They capped the year by being elected to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That 1994 class also included John Lennon, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Bob Marley, The Animals, Duane Eddy, and one of The Band’s long time touring partners, The Grateful Dead. Eric Clapton, who had long admired the group and cited them as one of the reasons he moved away from the style of music played by Cream, made the induction speech for The Band. They also helped legendary FM station WNEW-FM celebrate the station's 20th anniversary, as captured in this FM broadcast from the Stone Pony on August 26, 1994, 29 years ago today.

Bob Dylan - 1994-08-14 - Woodstock 94, Saugerties, NY (SBD)

I've seen Bob Dylan on 3 occasions - with the Grateful Dead serving as his back up band for a set in 1987 (after the Dead played 2 sets of their own!), as a headliner in 1989, and as the lead in band for the Dead in 1995, their last tour before Jerry Garcia passed away.

Today's post captures Bob Dylan in 1994 making up for missin out on the most famous rock festival in history. Twenty five years after the original festival, rock royalty came together once again at Woodstock in August 1994.  That 25th anniversary concert was originally scheduled for August 13 and 14 and billed as “2 more days of peace and music”, borrowing from the 1969 concert’s promotional posters. A 3rd day was eventually added on August 12. Interestingly, many of the artists who played Woodstock 1994 did not perform at the original festival, such as the one and only Bob Dylan.  This soundboard recording captures Dylan on August 14, 1994, 32 years ago today, performing before an audience of 350,000. Despite the rain and mud, conditions similar to those in 1969, the crowd was mostly well behaved and embodied the spirit shown by those who attended the original Woodstock.

The Pretenders - 1994-06-10 - Mountain View, CA (FM)

I've seen the Pretenders live 3 times - early on in their career in October 1981 at the Palladium, in April 1987 at Radio City Music Hall after the commercial success of the albums Learning To Crawl & Get Close, and then just a few years ago, in April 2018, at the Morristown PAC. That gap of 31 years between 1987 and 2018 is the 4th longest I ever went between seeing a concert by the same band. (FYI - the 3 longest gaps were: 40 years between seeing Pat Benatar in 1981 and 2021, 38 years between my first America concert in 1978 and the 2nd one in 2016, and 34 years between seeing John Hiatt in 1987 and then again in 2021).  If you like keeping track of statisics releated to the concerts you attended, similar to what I've just discussed, my book has a whole section filled with charts I'm sure you'll enjoy!

In any event, this FM broadcast captures The Pretenders in Mountain View on June 10, 1994, 32 years ago today. The band was on tour in support of their 6th studio album which had been released a month earlier, entitled Last Of The Independents. The disc yielded the single I'll Stand By You, which went to #16 on the Billboard charts in the US, and included a cover of Bob Dylan's Forever Young. The album also marked the return to the band of drummer Martin Chambers, who had been fired by Chrissie Hynde, 8 years earlier.

Blues Traveler - 1994-06-06 - Princeton, NJ (SBD)

The only time I saw Blues Traveler live was in November 1991, at Madison Square Garden as the lead-in band for Jerry Garcia! That was 3 years before they hit it big with the album "Four", which went to #8 on the Billboard charts. and sold over 6 million copies world wide. The single from that album, Run-Around, also went to #8 on the charts.

Speaking on making it big in 1994, this soundboard recording captures Blues Traveler during that break out year at McCarter Theatre on June 6, 1994, 32 years ago today.  The band was playing on their home turf, as they had originally formed while attending Princeton High school in 1987.

Robert Cray - 1994-06-03 - Mesa, AZ (SBD)

I've seen Robert Cray in concert twice, both times in 1987. The first time, in April, he led-in for Eric Clapton at Madison Square Garden. Then I saw Cray again in August 1987 at Pier 84 in New York. He was the headline act with John Hiatt as his lead in. It was a fitting pairing since just as Hiatt had his commercial breakthrough that year, so did Cray. His album Strong Persuader, released in late 1986, climbed into the top 15 on the Billboard charts in 1987. 

This soundboard recording captures Cray 7 years after I saw him live, leading in for Santana in Arizona on June 3, 1994, 32 years ago today.

The Holmes Brothers - 1994-01-08 - Bethlehem, PA (Ex Aud) 

1990s - #1: If you look at the page on this blog where I list all the concerts I've attended, (or peruse the countless lists in my book about all the shows I've seen), you won't see any mention of the Fabulous Holmes Brothers. That's because I saw them so many times, at so many different blues clubs in New York in the late 1980s that I lost count. For those of you unfamiliar with them, the New York Times described the band as playing “Timeless, deeply soulful and uplifting gospel-drenched blues, street corner doo-wop, ballads, R&B, country and funk." This excellent audience recording captures the Holmes Brothers in Bethlehem on January 8, 1994, 32 years ago this very day.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, WWSW-FM - branded 94.5 3WS - in Pittsburgh built a reputation as one of the premier "oldies" rock stations in the US.  In fact, the station would hold an annual "oldies festival" which would fill the 60,000 seat Three Rivers Stadium each year. This FM broadcast captures The Grass Rots at the 1994 version of the festival on June 4, 1994, 31 years ago today.  Also on the bill that day were Ronnie Spector, Jan & Dean, Get Back (a Beatles Tribute band) and James Brown.

1994: Someone must have had a premonition when they asked a then relatively unknown band to fill in for Van Morrison, who skipped his own induction, at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony on Janaury 16,1993. Later that year, that band released the album August & Everything, whihch went to #4 on the Billbaord charts in the strength of such songs as Mr. Jones, Round here and Rain King. The Counting Crows had arrived. This FM broadcast captures the band on tour in Europe in support of their stunning debut disc, on November 8, 1994, 3 decades years today.

1994: In November 1994, Eric Clapton played series off shows at s,all intimate venues where the set list featured nothing but the blues. No Layla, no Sunshine Of Your Love, no Lay Down Sally, etc. Nope, EC went back to his roots and broke out ones blues classic after another. Santana - 1994-08-14 - Saugerties, NY (SBD)

Of all the band's to play Woodstock, few got as significant a career boost as Santana did. Their incendiary performance was featured in the movie and helped propel sales of their debut album, which would be released on August 30, 1969, to #4 on the Billboard charts. Incredibly, Sanatna almost didn't get to perform at Woodstock. When Bill Graham negotiated to have the Grateful Dead at the festival, he insisted that 1 of 2 other bands that he managed be on the bill. The 2 bands in question were It's A Beautiful Day and Santana. After listening to recordings of both groups, Michael Laing, who had helped organize Woodstock, couldn't decide between them. So he flipped a coin. Santana won and the rest is history.

Like his fellow Woodstock alum Joe Cocker, Santana also played at the 25th anniversary concert.  This soundboard recording captures that performance, on August 14, 1994, 30 years ago today.

Joe Cocker - 1994-08-13 - Saugerties, NY (SBD)

At Woodstock on August 17, 1969, Joe Cocker did what others could only dream of, namely take a tune by the most famous and arguably greatest rock band of all time and make it his very own. Cocker closed his set with a cover of The Beatles' With A Little Help From My Friends, turning Ringo's sing along into a "gospel-flavored soulful spectacle and painting Joe as its mad maestro." Cocker’s recorded version of the song went on to hit #1 on the UK charts, was used as the theme song for hit TV show The Wonder Years, and is ranked as one of the greatest cover versions of all time, up there with Jimi's rendition of Dylan's All Along The Watchtower.

Twenty five years later, as captured in this soundboard recording, Cocker was on stage at the 25th anniversary concert celebrating the Woodstock Festival, on August 13, 1994, 3 decades ago this very day. 1994 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1994-01-19 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 1994 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction ceremony was another marked by both wonderous moments and lingering tensions. Jerry Garcia decided to skip the Grateful Dead's induction, though the rest of the band did their best to make light of the situation by bringing along a life size cardboard cut out of their lead guitarist.  Robbie Robertson of The Band was in attendance, but Levon Helm decided not to show up due to long running issues with Robertson. Paul McCartney, who skipped The Beatles' induction in 1988 due to legal dispues with his former bandmates and Yoko Ono, was on hand to induct John Lennon, He even hugged Ono at the end of his induction speech in an emotional reconciliation. If  only McCartney had performed in tribute to Lennon, instead of the odd pairing of Bruce Springsteen and Axl Rose who played Come Together. No one in attendance will ever forget Bono's tribute to the late Bob Marley - "Showman, shaman, human, Jamaican!" Perhaps the best musical moments of the night belonged to 2 men not inducted in 1994. Jeff Beck played a moving version of People Get Ready to honor Rod Stewart, who had to miss the ceremony due to an earthquake in Los Angeles.  And Chuck Berry strutted his stuff at the age of 68 on Roll Over Beethoven, backed by  Bob Weir and Bruce Hornsby.

The Mule 1994 - Back To Back - #1: In 1994, Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody of The Allman Brothers Band launched a side project called Gov’t Mule. Haynes and Woody, who were fans of power trios such as Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, recruited Matt Abts to handle the drums. The new band, affectionately known to its fans as The Mule, released their self titled debut album in October 1995. This soundboard recording captures The Mule about 10 months prior to the release of that disc, on December 28 1994, 29 years ago today, in Asheville.  Download his one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Neil Young 1994 - Back to Back - #1: Neil Young has always believed in the power of rock and roll to create political and social change. Just think about songs like Ohio, Hungerton, the 2006 CSNY Freedom of Speech Tour to protest the War in Iraq, and his contributions to Farm Aid. Another social cause that Neil has championed has a far more personal connection. His son Ben is afflicted with cerebral palsy, so Neil and former wife Peggy founded The Bridge School, to help children with severe speech and physical impairments. Every year from 1986 to 2016, with the exception of 1987, Neil has hosted a benefit concert to raise funds for the Bridge School. This soundboard recording captures Neil and Crazy Horse at the Bridge School benefit on October 1, 1994, 29 years ago this very day.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back to Back Set.

The Band - 1994-08-26 -Asbury Park NJ (FM) 

For a group that had played their supposedly "Last Waltz" in 1976, 1994 proved to be quite a magical year for The Band. Original members Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson continued to tour relentlessly, incorporating tunes from their 1993 album Jericho into their set list. Among the songs from that disc was a unique cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Atlantic City. They played at Woodstock 1994 in August, 25 years after they had played the original festival in 1969. They capped the year by being elected to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That 1994 class also included John Lennon, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Bob Marley, The Animals, Duane Eddy, and one of The Band’s long time touring partners, The Grateful Dead. Eric Clapton, who had long admired the group and cited them as one of the reasons he moved away from the style of music played by Cream, made the induction speech for The Band. They alos helped legendary FM station WNEW-FM cdelebrate the stations 20th anniversary, as captured in this FM brosdcast from the Stone Pony on August 26, 1994, 29 years ago today.
