On September 22, 1985, Neil Young, Willie Nelson & John Mellencamp, inspired by Bob Dylan's pleas at Live Aid to help the family farmer in America, launched Farm Aid intending to do just that! That first festival, which was held at the University of Illinois, attracted 80,000 fans and raised over $9 million. Over the past 4 decades, the effort has raised well over $75 million to help America's family farms while also serving a a key organization to raise awareness of the importance and plight of those farmers. This TV SBD recording captures highlights from Fam Aid 1986, held in Manor, Texas on July 4, 1986, 39 years ago today.  In addition to all the artists who performed live in Texas, the organizers simulcast portions of a concert in Buffalo featuring Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead!

To say Dave Mason has had an interesting rock & roll career would be an understatement. In the late 1960s, he was an on again, off again member of Traffic. Around that time, he played acoustic guitar on Jimi Hendrix's legendary version of All Along The Watchtower, In the 1970s and 1980s. he had a successful solo career, especially with his 1977 album, Let It Flow. That disc would produce 3 top 100 tunes - So High at #89, Let It Go Let It Flow at #45 and We Just Disagree at #12. For a brief time in the 1990s, Mason was a member of Fleetwood Mac, releasing the album Time with them in 1995. In 1997, he was scheduled to be a member of Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band, performing Only You Know and I Know, We Just Disagree and Feelin Alright, but he was dropped from rehearsals before the tour started. That may explain why he doesn't always get the recognition he deserves as he didn't seem to be able to stick around with a band for more than a brief moment. That said, Mason has never stopped touring, playing upwards of 100 shows a year. This soundboard recording captures Mason in Chicago on September 29, 2007, 17 years ago today.

The 2004 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremomy was a rare one as almost every inductee not only showed up, but also played live.  The only one not present was the late George Harrison, but the tribute to him produced one of the iconic moments in the Hall's history.  Harrison was inducted by his Traveling Wilbury partners Tom Petty & Jeff Lynne, who performed Handle With Care.  They were them joined by Prince and Harrison's son, Dhani, for a breathtaking version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. How good was it - well cleveland.com ranked it as the best Induction Ceremony performance of all time.

This TV soundboard recording captures the musical highlights from that ceremony on March 15, 2000, 20 years ago today..  A complete list of inductees is provided below.

A historical note - The Schaefer Music Festival ran summers from 1968 to 1976 at the Wollman Skating Rink in Central Park. The festival had originated in 1966 and was sponsored that year and the following one by Rheingold. Dr. Pepper took over sponsorship in 1977. In 1981, the festival moved to Pier 84, next to where the Intrepid is docked. Miller took over sponsorship in 1983 until the series ended in 1988. During that 20 year span, some of the biggest names in rock played the summer series, including Led Zeppelin, The Byrds, The Band, Van Morrison, The Eagles, and CSN, just to name a few. In the early days, ticket prices ranged from $1 to $3, making it one of the best bargains in rock.

In April 1967, Dave Mason joined Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood to form Traffic.  As the Summer of Love dawned in June 1967, the band released its first single, Paper Sun, which went to #5 on the charts in the UK, though it barely cracked the top 100 at #94 in the US. The band set to work its first album, Mr. Fantasy which was released in December 1967, but by that time Mason had left the band. He then returned in the middle of recording their follow up disc in 1968. After the band broke up and reformed, Mason rejoined for a brief period in 1971, only to depart the band once again soon after. This FM broadcast captures Mason over 2 decades after the Summer Of Love, during the height of his success as a solo artist, on June 2, 1979, 38 years ago today. He's joined  by some very special friends, including 2 veterans from 1967, Stephen Stills and Joe Cocker. Cocker sings lead on Feeling Alright, a song originally written by Mason, and recorded by Traffic!

1974: After leaving Traffic in 1969, Mason released a solo album every year from 1970 through 1975. His best charting single during that period was Only You Know and I Know, which hit Number 42 on the Billboard charts in 1970. His biggest success, however, would come in 1977, with the release of the album Let It Flow. That disc would produce 3 top 100 tunes - So High at #89, Let It Go Let It Flow at #45 and We Just Disagree at #12. This high quality recording, however, is from before that run of hits, as it features Mason on March 2, 1974, 43 years years ago today, from the Orpeheum Theater Concert Hall in Boston. By the way, while many shows in the Northeast during this time were taped by Dan Lampanski, this one was recorded by Steve Hopkins. One other note - Mason plays a cover of All Along The Watchtower., a highly appropriate choice since he played acoustic guitar on Jimi Hendrix's legendary version of that tune!

Dave Mason has played with both Traffic and Fleetwood Mac, in addition to having a successful solo career. After leaving Traffic in 1969, Mason released a solo album every year from 1970 through 1975. This FM recording, however, is from before that run of hist, as it features Mason on December 31, 1975, 4 decades ago today, from the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Maybe that's why the set list features only a few of his solo tracks and is dominated by tunes from his days with Traffic.

As discussed in several earlier posts here at So Many Roads, Eric Clapton quickly grew tired on being in Blind Faith. During that band's only tour in 1969, EC found himself spending more time with opening act Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett than he was with Winwood and Baker! Once the tour ended, EC left Blind Faith and joined up with Delaney & Bonnie. This soundboard recording finds EC on tour with Delaney & Bonnie on December 2, 1969, 46 years ago today! Also on stage is Clapton's good friend, George Harrison, as well as Dave Mason!

This soundboard recording of Dave Mason from December 20, 1975, 39 years ago today, includes his version of the Bob Dylan classic All Along The Watchtower. Of course, numerous artists have covered that tune, such as Dave Matthews, U2 andThe Grateful Dead, but of course, the definitive version of the song has to be the one by Jimi Hendrix in 1968. So, at first glance, it would seem that Mason is just another in a long line of folks covering Dylan but never equaling Hendrix. What many people don’t know, however, is that Dave Mason played acoustic guitar on Hendrix’s legendary cover!

While the rock festival may have originated in the decade of the 1960s with the Monterrey Pop festival in June 1967, many of the most famous festivals actually took place in the 1970s. For example, the largest attended festival in US history, with over 600,000 concert goers on hand to hear the Allman Brothers, The Band and The Grateful Dead,, took place in August 1973 at Watkins Glen. Beginning in 1974, Knebworth in the UK became the site an almost annual outdoor festival, hosting such acts as Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd. Ontario Motor Speedway in California actually hosted 2 festivals in the 1970s, Cal Jam 1 in April 1974 and then its successor, Cal Jam 2 on March 18, 1978, 35 years ago today. Cal Jam 2 reflected the rise of a host of new hard rocking musical acts, with performances from Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Heart, and Mahogany Rush. Dave Mason also appeared on the bill, with his set focusing more on his 1970s solo material than on his music with Traffic. Download this one to hear Dave Mason play at one of the last great festivals of the decade. PS - thanks to the folks at Rock Rare Collection Fetish for the artwork.
