I've seen Squeeze on 2 occasions - in August 1981 at the South Mountain "Music Festival" - in reality, the side of a hill - and in August 1985, at Pier 84 in New York.

Today's post goes back to 1991 when Squeeze released their 9th studio album, entitled Play. The liner notes to the album are, appropriately, in the form of a play that incorporates the lyrics of the songs in a script that also references the plays Our Town by Thornton Wilder and Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett.  While the album did not have much commerical success, crtical reviews were strong, with AllMusic gving the disc 4 stars, calling it "Squeeze's best post-reunion album" and naming the tracks The Truth and Walk A Straight Line as "particular highlights".  This FM broadcast captures Squueze on tour in suppprt of Play about a year after its release, in Joliet on August 9, 1992, 34 years ago today.

This FM broadcast captures Squeeze on June 30, 1980, 46 years ago today, in Chicago. The band was on tour in support of the album Argy Bargy, which helped them finally breakthrough in the US and had some critics hailing Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook as the new Lennon & McCartney. While that praise was a bit over the top, there’s no doubt that the duo filled Argy Bargy with a host of soon to be classic new wave tunes, including Pulling Mussels (from the Shell), Another Nail in My Heart and If I Didn't Love You.

ENGLAND - In 1985, 3 years after disbanding, the 5 members of Squeeze who recorded Argy Bargy in 1980 - Difford, Tilbrook, Holland, Lavis, and Bentley - reformed for a charity gig in the UK. The concert was such a success that the band unanimously agreed to resume recording and touring as Squeeze. Searching for a different sound, however, the band replaced Bentley with bassist Keith Wilkinson. This new line-up released the 1985 album Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti, then launched a tour of the US and UK. When the Cochella Music and Arts Festival launched in 1999, the 2 day event hosted about 37,000 concert goers, just slightly more than half the foretasted 70,000 the organizers had hoped to draw.  The festival was then cancelled in 2000, and retained in 2001, but only as a single day event.  Things looked bleak for the future until AEG purchased the original promoters of the festival, providing a strong source of funding in the process. Cochella returned to a 2 day format in 2002 and hasn't looked back. Artists such as Prince, Paul McCartney, Jay Z, AC DC, Kayne West, Lada Gaga and Beyonce have headlined the festival in recent years.  In 2007, the festival expanded to 3 days.  In 2012, it grew to encompass back to back 3 day weekends, each featuring the same line of artists.  This soundboard recording captures Squeeze, 7 years ago today at that the 2012 Festival, on April 14 during the 2nd day of the first weekend of performances!

In the 1980s, The Ritz (as Webster Hall was then known) was a major venue for the host punk and new wave bands that has now garnered mainstream attention, such as Squueze,  Their 1980 disc, Argy Bargy, had some critics hailing Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook as the new Lennon & McCartney. While that praise was a bit over the top, there’s no doubt that the duo filled Argy Bargy with a host of soon to be classic new wave tunes, including Pulling Mussels (from the Shell), Another Nail in My Heart and If I Didn't Love You. The follow up disc, East Side Story, released in May 1981 went to #44 on the US Billboard charts, the band’s highest charting album, In addition, the single Tempted, sung by Paul Carrack who had replaced Jools Holland on keyboards, went all the way to #8 on the charts. This FM broadcast captures Squeeze at The Ritz just a month after the release of East Side Story, on June 29, 1981, 37 years ago this very day.
