Farm Aid - 1986-07-04 - Manor TX (TV SBD)

On September 22, 1985, Neil Young, Willie Nelson & John Mellencamp, inspired by Bob Dylan's pleas at Live Aid to help the family farmer in America, launched Farm Aid intending to do just that! That first festival, which was held at the University of Illinois, attracted 80,000 fans and raised over $9 million. Over the past 4 decades, the effort has raised well over $75 million to help America's family farms while also serving a a key organization to raise awareness of the importance and plight of those farmers. This TV SBD recording captures highlights from Fam Aid 1986, held in Manor, Texas on July 4, 1986, 39 years ago today.  In addition to all the artists who performed live in Texas, the organizers simulcast portions of a concert in Buffalo featuring Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead!

In September 1965, John Kay joined a popular Canadian band called The Sparrows. In early 1967, the band toured alongside The Doors and The Steve Miller Band, but eventually broke up.  Later that year, Kay recruited several members of his former band, renamed the group Steppenwolf, and the rest they as they say is history.  The group would release its first single that year,  Girl I Knew/The Ostrich, then in 1968 rocket to fame with such tunes as Sookie Sookie, The Pusher, Magic Carpet Ride and of course, Born To Be Wild.  This FM broadcast captures Steppenwolf 2 years after the Summer iof Love, in Germany on June 7, 1959, 53 years ago today.

1960s - #1: While 1967 was the Summer of Love, 1968 may have been America's darkest hour. Violence appeared to be the order of the day - riots in Chicago during the Democratic National Convention, the My Lai massacre in Viet Nam, and of course, the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert kennedy. Perhaps its not a surprise that music that year also had a darker tone. In 1967, a band called the Sparrows changed their name to Steppenwolf, inspired by the Hermann Hesse novel of the same name. That novel portrays man's struggle between spirituality and aggression, similar to what was transpiring in America in 1968. About a year later, in June 1968, the band skyrocketed to fame when they released the single Born To Be Wild. The song contains the lyric "heavy metal thunder", which of course became the name for the more aggressive, thunderous genre of music that emerged as the 1960;s evolved into the 1970's. The song climbed to #2 on the Billboard singles charts, and over the years it has become one of rock’s legendary tunes. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Born To Be Wild at No. 129 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. Since being included in the soundtrack for the movie Easy Rider in 1969, Born to Be Wild has been featured in dozens of other films, such as Coming Home, Borat, Dr. Dolittle 2, and Mr. Bean's Holiday, as well as countless TV shows, such as Married With Children and Miami Vice. This soundboard recording captures Steppenwolf in Dallas on February 2, 1968, 53 years ago today, and just a few months before the release of Born To Be Wild.

1980 - After having disbanded twice in the 1970s, once in 1972 and then again in 1976, Steppenwolf reformed for a 3rd time in 1980.  lead singer John Kay was the only member of the original band, however, to be part of the groups 3d incarnation. When the band went on the road for a "reunion" tour, WNEW-FM was on hand at My Fathers place to broadcast their return to New Yor on February 16, 1980, 37 years ago today.
