In November 1985, Pat Benatar released her sixth studio album, Seven the Hard Way. The title of the album is based on a type of bet in craps. The album was the Benatar’s seventh release in seven years, though it was the first to only certify as gold after the first 6 had all reached platinum status. Seven The Hard Way went to #26 on the Billboard charts and yielded the top 10 single Invincible and the top 40 hit, Sex As A Weapon. This FM broadcast captures Benatar on tour in support of Seven The Hard Way on Portland on March 31, 1986, 28 years ago today. After this tour, she would score one more gold album with Wide Awake In Dreamland in 1988, then yield her spot as the Queen of rock and roll the early 1990s to one Ms. Sheryl Crow.

While the last leg of the Elevation Tour is remembered for U2's remarkable tribute to the victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, the early parts of the tour were a celebration of the band's amazing new album, All That You Can't Leave Behind. Following the mixed reception to their 1997 album, Pop, U2 returned to their roots for All That You Can't Leave Behind. At the time of the album's release, U2 said on a number of occasions that they were "reapplying for the job of the best band in the world". The public and critics heartily approved, as the disc sold over 12 million copies and won 7 Grammy Awards. The songs Beautiful Day, Walk On, Elevation, and Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of all reached the top 5 on the Billboard charts in the United Kingdom. Of course, many of the album's songs, especially Walk On, New York and Peace On Earth, would take on new meaning in the wake of the events of 9-11. That tragic moment, however, was still in the future when U2 hit the stage in Atlanta on March 30, 2001, 13 years ago today. This soundboard is considered one of the best recordings from the entire tour, and showcases U2’s return to the top of the rock world.

Chuck Berry - 1972-03-29 - London, UK (FM)

In May 1970, Howlin' Wolf traveled to Olympic Sound Studios in London, England, to record songs for The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions. The album was released in August 1971 and peaked at number 28 on Billboard magazine's R&B Albums chart and number 79 on the Billboard 200. Inspired by Wolf's success, Muddy Waters recorded his own London Sessions album in December 1971, and then Chuck Berry Berry did the same in 1972. While in London, Berry played a number of live shows, including one  on February 3, 1972, portions of which were included on the London Sessions album. Ironically, the single from the album an edited version of the novelty song My Ding A Ling, became the only number 1 hit for a man who reached the top 40 on at least a dozen occasions with songs such as Promised Land, Maybellene and of course, Johnny B. Goode This FM broadcast captures Chuck during that same London visit, on March 29, 1972, 42 years ago today.

In February 1980, Squeeze released the album Argy Bargy, which helped the band finally break through in the US and had some critics hailing Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook as the new Lennon & McCartney. While that praise was a bit over the top, there’s no doubt that the duo filled Argy Bargy with a host of soon to be classic new wave tunes, including Pulling Mussels (from the Shell), Another Nail in My Heart and If I Didn't Love You. This FM broadcast captures the band on tour about a month after the release of Argy Bargy, in Boston on March 28, 1980, 34 years ago today. The band would find greater commercial success with their next album, East Side Story, which yielded the hit single, and MTv favorite, Tempted, but Squeeze established itself as a leader of the New Wave movement with Argy Bargy.

To be blunt, I was less than happy when the Angry Joe Jackson of the late 1970s and early 1980s became Sentimental Joe with the release of songs like Stepping Out. I missed the unhappy, growling punk rocker behind songs such as I’m the Man, One More Time and Is She Really Going Out With Him. In 2003, however, Jackson reunited with Grham Maby, David Houghton and Gary Sanford, his original backing band, for an album entitled Volume 4. While not the success his early albums were, Volume 4 was a welcome return to Jackson’s original rock roots. This soundboard recording captures Jackson on tour on March 27, 2003, 11 years ago today, just about 2 weeks after the release of Volume 4. Download this one to hear Joe reach back to his glory days just “one more time”.

Bruce Hornsby - 1999-03-26 - Ashland KY (SBD)

On April 12, 1999, I saw one of my favorite concerts - Bruce Hornsby at the Morristown Performing Arts Center. With just over 1000 seats, the MPAC is the perfect place for a show. Hornsby was in excellent form, combining his own material with a host of wonderful covers, including Girl from North Country, Madman Across The Water, Tupeluo Honey and Franklin’s Tower. My lovely bride was pregnant at the time with my twin boys, so I always tell them it was their first concert! Unfortunately, I’ve never come across a tape of that show. This soundboard recording from March 26, 1999, 15 years ago today, is from just about 2 weeks prior to when Hornsby played Morristown. Of course, Hornsby learned his lessons well while playing with the Dead, so no two shows of his are alike. That said, even though this performance from Ashland includes very few of the songs he played in Morristown, it still showcases Hornsby’s tremendous piano playing and improvisational skills.

Sheryl Crow - 2002-03-25 - Munich, Germany (SBD)

In April 2002, Sheryl Crow released her 4th album, entitled C’Mon, C’Mon. The disc became her 4th platinum album, and 4th to chart in the top 6 on the Billboard Top 200. In fact, it reached #2 on the charts, the best showing by any of her albums to date. The lead single from the disc, Soak Up the Sun, peaked at reached #17 on the Billboard Hot 100, while climbing all the way to #1 on the Billboard adult music charts. This FM broadcast captures Sheryl in Germany on March 24, 2002, a dozen years ago this very day, on tour in support of her soon to be released album. In addition to featuring 4 tunes from C’Mon C’Mon, the set list includes many of her earlier hits as well as covers of Midnight Rider and Good Times, Bad Times.

Rolling Stones - 2006-03-24 - Tokyo, Japan (SBD)

When the Rolling Stones released A Bigger Bang in September 2005, it was their first studio album in almost 8 years. To support the album, the Stones launched a massive world wide tour, that started at Fenway Park, and included a performance at the Super Bowl in February 2006. The tour continued for another 18 months, covering South America, Asia, several return trips to North America and finally ending in Europe in August 2007, 2 years after it began. The Stones set a record by grossing over $558 million for the 147 shows they performed. It truly was a Bigger Bang, especially for the bucks! This soundboard captures the band on march 24, 2006, 8 years ago today, in Tokyo, about 10 months into the tour.

In 1970, Santana had an enormous commercial and critical success with the band's second album, Abraxas, which featured such soon to be classics as Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen and Oye Como Va. The album went to #1, and drew widespread acclaim for its mix of Latin influences with traditional rock arrangements. Then in early 1971, the band added San Francisco teenage guitar prodigy Neil Schon to its lineup, giving the group two dynamic lead guitarists. This soundboard captures the new line up at The Forum in Los Angeles on March 23, 1971, 43 years ago today. In addition, Carlos is joined by Jose Feliciano for the last 3 songs of the night. This is classic Santana and a show you can't miss. By the way, the artwork lists this show as March 21, but as you can see from the poster below, March 23 is the correct date!

McGuinn, Clark & Hillman - 1979-03-22 - Austin TX (FM)

As the decade of the 1970s came to a close, the Byrds seemed to be on the verge of a reunion. Roger McGuiin, Gene Clark and Chris Hillman, along with David Crosby, played together on December 8, 1977 and February 9, 1978. While the Byrds never officially re-formed, those shows did lead to McGuinn, Clark and Hillman touring and recording together. In early 1979, they released their self titled debut album, which spawned the top 40 hit, Don’t You Write Her Off Like That. The album was a disappointment to both fans and critics, who were expecting the Byrds but instead of crisp harmonies and McGuinn’s trademark Rickenbacker guitar, got disco rhythms, slick production, strings and horns. McGuinn, Clark and Hillman went on tour in support of the album in the Spring of 1979, and fortunately their live shows featured plenty of material from their days with The Byrds.This FM broadcast captures the band in Austin on March 22, 1979, 35 years ago today.

Steve Winwood - 1991-03-22 - Yokohama, Japan (SBD)

In late 1990, Steve Winwood released his 6th solo album, entitled Refugees Of The Heart. The disc climbed to #27 on the Billboard charts, which while not as success ful has his 2 previous albums, to his Back in The High Life and Roll With It, which had reached #3 and #1 respectively, was still a strong showing. Winwood reunited with former Traffic band mate Jim Capaldi to write the tune One and Only man for the album. That collaboration sowed the seeds for an eventual Traffic reunion in 1994. This soundboard recording captures Winwood in Japan on March 22, 1991, 23 years ago today, on tour in support of Refugee Of The Heart. The set list includes 3 songs from that disc, surrounded by a host of earlier Winwood solo tunes, Traffic classics and Spencer Davis Group hits.

About 2 years ago, we posted The Police live from Cleveland on January 21, 1980.  Today, we catch them 60 days later, on the same tour, except an ocean away in Sydney, Australia!  The set list from this FM broadcast of the band on March 21, 1980, 34 years ago today, is almost identical to the Cleveland show, with one small, but important exception.  About halfway through the show, Sting launches into a new song, Driven To Tears, from the band's forthcoming album, Zenyatta Moondatta.  He even comments that unless folks in the audience had been at one of the earlier Sydney shows, they would never have heard the song!  Driven To Tears, with its references to poverty, would be the first Police song to have a political bent to it.  Another song on Zenyatta Moondatta, Bombs Away, would also comment on world events, referring to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.  This show, therefore, provides the first peek into maturation of The Police as a band, moving from being simply a new wave phenomenon to becoming artists championing social causes and expressing political views.

In our 4 plus years here at So Many Roads, we’ve brought you almost 20 JimI Hendrix shows, including his legendary performances at Monterey Pop and Woodstock. None of those shows, however, are from 1968. That changes today with this soundboard recording from Ottawa, Canada on March 19, 1968, 46 years ago today. Jimi had returned to North America in the winter of 1968 for the first time since his 1967 summer shows leading in for the Monkees! He was touring in support of his second album, Axis Bold As Love, which had been released on December 1, 1967 in the UK and in early January in the US. The album climbed to #3 on the US charts, and has stood the test of time, with Rolling Stone ranking #83 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. As most of the album’s tracks were composed using complex studio recording techniques, they did not lend themselves to being played live. Only Little Wing and Spanish Magic Castl became long term fixtures in Jimi’s setlists. This show features the latter of those 2 tracks, along with a host of Hendrix classics.

Roger Waters - 2007-03-18 - Buenos Aires, Argentina (SBD)

On June 2, 2006, at the Rock in Rio Festival, Roger Waters launched the Dark Side of The Moon Live, tour, which would eventually run for 2 years and encompass 119 concerts. The tour was comprised of 7 legs, and visited 5 of the 7 continents, Europe, North America, South America, Australia and Asia, The tour featured elaborate stage design by Mark Fisher, who had been the architect of Pink Floyd's The Wall shows, and included giant puppets, giant video screen displays and a 360° quadraphonic sound system. Each concerted was divided into 2 sets, with the first consisting of a mixture of Pink Floyd classics and Water’s solo material, while the second featured Dark Side of The Moon album in its entirety. The encores featured 5 songs from The Wall. This soundboard captures Waters on Leg 4 of the tour, in Argentina on March 18, 2007, 7 years ago today. David Crosby - 1984-03-17 - Mahopac NY (SBD)

Over the years here at So Many Roads, we’ve posted solo shows from Neil Young and Steven Stills, and Graham Nash with the Hollies, but we’ve yet to bring you anything from David Crosby outside of the CSNY confines.. Well, today we rectify that issue by posting a soundboard recording of a solo show by Crosby from March 17, 1984, 3 decades ago this very day. The show takes place during a very turbulent time in Crosby’s life. A few years in earlier, in 1982, Crosby was arrested and later spent nine months in prison in Texas on a variety of drug and weapons charges. Then about a year after this concert, in 1985, he was arrested for a hit-and-run incident, as well as possession of a concealed pistol and drug paraphernalia. Crosby had driven into a fence in a Marin County suburb and responding officers found a .45-caliber pistol and cocaine in his car. Seemingly the only place Crosby could function was on stage, as his performance does not seem impacted in any way by his troubled personal life.

Pink Floyd - 1994-03-16 - San Bernadino, CA (SBD)

On March 30, 1994, Pink Floyd launched their Division Bell Tour, in support of the album of the same name. This marked the 2nd tour and album since Roger Waters left the band in 1985 and David Gilmour took on the leadership role in the group. The album went to number 1 on the Billboard charts as soon as it was released, but the impressive sales were not matched by glowing reviews. In fact, most critics panned the album. Rolling Stone, for example, wrote that Gilmour's guitar solos "were once the band's centrepieces, as articulate, melodic and well-defined as any in rock, but he now has settled into rambling, indistinct asides that are as forgettable as they used to be indelible." The critics had little impact on the fans, who not only bought 3 million copies of the disc in the US alone, but turned out in droves for the live shows. The band played to 5.5 million people in 68 cities; with over $250 million in ticket sales, making it, at the time, the largest grossing tour in history. Nick Lowe - 1982-03-15 - London, UK (FM)

Our second post today features an FM broadcast of Nick Lowe on March 15, 1982, 32 years ago today, from London.  In 1981 after the break up of Rockpile, Lowe recorded a solo album entitled Nick The Life.  The disc, however, has several ties to his former band.  First, it includes a slowed down cover of the Rockpile tune, Heart.  Second, both drummer Terry Williams and guitarist Billy Bremner from the band back Lowe on The album.  So too do guitarist Martin Belmont, from The Rumour and Paul carrack, from would Squeeze. Bremmer, Belmont and Carrack also join Lowe for this set for the bBC, which draws tunes from Nick The Knife, Lowe’s days with Rockpile and his classic 1978 debut disc, Jesus of Cool, which was originally released in the uS as Pure Pop for Now People to avoid having the Jesus reference in the UK title offend anyone! By the way, Carrack takes the lead on Tempted from his days with Squeeze and Lesson In Love, from his 1982 solo album Suburban Voodoo.

Neil Young - 2008-03-15 - London, UK (HQ Aud)

In March 2005, while working on the Prairie Wind album in Nashville, Neil Young was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. He was treated successfully in an operation performed in a New York hospital on March 29.  Two days later, Young passed out on a New York street from bleeding from the femoral artery, which surgeons had used to access the aneurysm. Neil was again treated, and again, recovered. After 2 such close brushes with death, most people would have probably retired to a nice quiet life, thankful to still have some more days ahead of them. Neil Young, however, is not most people. His life since the aneurysm has been as busy as prior to the operation. By September 2005, Prairie Wind had been released, and the album's live premiere in Nashville was immortalized by filmmaker Jonathan Demme in the 2006 film, Neil Young: Heart of Gold. The next year, he was back on the road with CSNY as part of the Freedom of Speech tour, protesting the policies of then President George Bush. In 2007, he released Chrome Dreams II, a sequel to an album he never released! Typical Neil -- always doing things his way! He continued to tour extensively, playing over 100 shows in 2007 and 2008 combined. This HQ audience recording catches Neil in London on March 18, 2008, 6 years ago today and just about 3 years after his aneurysm. Download this and you’ll see (and hear) that despite all he’s been through, Neil can still rock with the best of them.

As promised in our Jerry Garcia post earlier this month, here’s a soundboard recording of Robert Hunter on March 12, 1983, 31 years ago today, Hunter’s set includes his version of Run For The Roses, a tune he and Jerry co-wrote around that time and which Garcia rrleased on an album of the same name. In addition, Hunter’s performance includes a version of Touch of Grey, the tune that would become the Dead’s only top 10 hit some 4 years later in 1987!  Believe it or not, The Dead first performed Touch oF Grey live months earlier, on September 15, 1982, but it wouldn’t be released commercially until the In The Dark album hit record stores in the summer of 1987, Of course, the video for the song, with its marionette version  of the band, would receive extensive airplay on MTV and earn the Dead a whole new legion of fans.

Simon & Garfunkel - 1967-03-11 - Medford, MA (SBD)

The artwork included with this soundboard recording leaves no doubt that Simon & Garfunkel played at Tufts University on March 11, 1967, 47 years ago today.  We have jpgs of posters for the show and newspaper articles advertising the event.  What we don't know for certain is whether the music was played at that show, or at an earlier performance at the same location.   The original uploader of this show make a compelling argument, based on the set list and comparison to other bootlegs, that this recording is actually from a late 1966 performance.  See the notes included with the download for all the details.  Regardless of the actual date the tunes were recorded, this show is an outstanding example of S&G's early work, including wonderful versions of I Am A Rock, Sounds Of Silence, The 59th Street Bridge Song and Homeward Bound.

Cream - 1968-03-10 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

When Cream toured the US in the Spring of 1968, they established a record at the time for the longest tour by a British band in North America. Yet even as they were filling venues from California to New York, the band was coming apart. When the tour ended, basically so did Cream The band members announced that they would dissolve the group by year end, after a final farewell tour in the US and 2 dates at the Royal Albert Hall in London, The tensions between Clapton, Baker and Bruce simply had become too much for the trio to endure. This soundboard recording captures Cream on March 19, 1968, 46 years ago today, at Winterland in San Francisco. Download this one to hear the beginning of the end for one of rock’s legendary bands.

The Eagles - 1973-03-09 - Voorburg, Netherlands (SBD)

In June 1972, the Eagles released their self titled debut album to critical acclaim and commercial success. Three singles from the album, Peaceful Easy Feeling, Witchy Women and Take It Easy, all hit the top 25 on the Billboard charts. Moreover, the album played a key role in popularizing a new 1970s musical genre known as the Southern California country rock sound. In early 1973, the Eagles returned to England, where they had recorded their debut album, to again team with producer Glyn Johns, on their second album. While in Europe, they performed this show in the Netherlands on March 9, 1973, 41 years ago today. The set features all 3 hit singles from their first album, as well as 5 tracks from their soon to be released second disc - Tequila Sunrise, Saturday Night, Certain Kind Of Fool. Outlaw Man and Out of Control. Interestingly, the Eagles do not play the title track from that disc, Desperado, a track, which would eventually become one of their signature tunes.

A century ago, in 1914, the building that houses the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem inNew York City first opened as Hurtig and Seamon’s New Burlesque Theater.  The theater became the Apollo in 1934, after a campaign led by then Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia closed many of the city’s burleeque houses. The Apollo focused on presenting musical acts, especially reaching out to Harlem’s growing African American community. The theater rose to prominence during the Harlem Renaissance of the pre-World War II years. Billing itself as a place "where stars are born and legends are made," the Apollo became famous for launching the careers of artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, who made her singing debut at 17 at the the theater on November 21, 1934.  In 1962, James Brown recorded the now legendary album, Live at the Apollo, at the venue. Jimi Hendrix won the first place prize in an amateur musician contest at the Apollo in 1964. Other performers whose careers started at the Apollo include Billie HolidayDiana Ross & The Supremes, Wilson Pickett, The Miracles, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Dionne Warwick, The Jackson 5, Patti LaBelle, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Ben E. King, and Sarah Vaughan, and that list is hardly all includive.  In recent years rock legends have line dup to play the theatre, in large part to pay homage to its legacy.  Metallica, Paul McCartney and bruce Springsteen for example have all performed at the theater in recent years.  This FM broadcast capture’s Springsteen’ show at the Apollo on March 9, 2012, just 2 years ago today. The show was the warm up for Springsteen’s Wrecking Ball tour, and also celebrated the 10th anniversary of Sirius satellite radio.  Fin tribute to the Apollo, Bruce broke out a covers of several R&B classics, including The Way You Do the Things You Do and Hold On I’m Coming. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - 2002-03-08 - Washington DC (HQ Aud)

When they concluded their historic 1974 tour, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young would not go on the road again for over 25 years. Then, with the start of the new century, they launched 3 tours in 6 years. In 2000, they reunited for the first time since 1974 for the CSNY2K tour, the name being derived from the infamous Y2K computer scare that turned out to be much ado about nothing. In 2006, they launched the Freedom Of Speech tour, protesting the policies of then President George W. Bush. In between, in 2002, the quartet embarked on the Tour of America. a 40 concert run that started on February 6 in Detroit and ran until the final show on April 29 in Portland. This high quality audience recording (note there was a screamer near the taper who shows up loudly every now and then!) captures the band on March 8, 2002, a dozen years ago today, in Washington DC near the middle of the run. Download this one for a host of CSNY and CSN classics, as well some solo material and a stunning encore of 8 Miles High, a tune from Crosby’s days with The Byrds.
