Bob Marley - 1976-04-23 - Upper Darby PA (SBD)

Bob Marley was also part of the 1994 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Class, along with the Grateful Dead, The Band, The Animals, John Lennon, and Elton John, just to name a few.  He holds the distinction of being the first reggae artist inducted into the institution. No one in attendance at the ceremony will ever forget Bono's tribute to Marley - "Showman, shaman, human, Jamaican!"

1980s - #6: In 1980, Bob Marley was slowly dying of cancer which had begun in his toe. Diagnosed with the disease in 1977, Marley had refused to amputate the toe due to his religious beliefs. As the cancer spread throughout his body, Marley recorded the album Uprising, a deeply religious disc addressing his Rastafarian faith. The final track in the album is Redemption Song, in which Marley deals with his own mortality. Marley would go on tour in support of the album, playing his final live performance on September 23, 1980 in Pittsburgh. This soundboard recording captures him earlier in that tour, playing a free concert in Zimbabwe, in celebration of Zimbabwe's declaration of self-government and independence from the UK, on April 19, 1980, 45 years ago today.

Bob Marley - 1979-12-15 - Nassau, Bahamas (SBD)

1979 - On October 2, 1979, Bob Marley released the album Survival, a disc filled with songs dealing with the theme of African unity. The title might have also been a reflection of his own life, as in 1976 he survived a gunshot attack at his home in Jamaica. He was also fighting cancer, which had begun in his foot and was slowly spreading to the rest of his body. That disease would claim his life on May 11, 1981. This soundboard recording captures Marley on December 15, 1979, 43 years ago today, in Nassau in the Bahamas, where he had spent 2 years in self imposed exile after the attempt on his life. Bob Marley - 1978-06-08 - Boston, MA (early) (SBD)

Bob Marley 1978 - #1: In December 3, 1976, Bob Marley, his wife, and manager were wounded in an assault by unknown gunmen inside the singer’s home in Jamaica, in what was believed to be a politically motivated attack. Nonetheless, Marley performed just 2 days later at a concert before a crowd of over 80,000 people. When asked why, Marley responded, "The people who are trying to make this world worse aren't taking a day off. How can I?” Marley then spent a month in the Bahamas recovering from his wounds, after which he moved to London, where he spent the next 2 years in self-imposed exile. While in the UK, Marley recorded the albums Exodus, released in 1977, and Kaya, released in April of the following year. The release of Kaya coincided with the One Love Peace Concert held in Jamaica on April 22, 1978. At that concert, Marley made his triumphant return to Jamaica after his 2 year stint in London. This soundboard recording captures Marley just a few weeks later, during the early show in Boston, on June 8, 1978, 43 years ago this very day.  Download this one, then come back later today for the late show in this Same Tour, Different Show set!

In 1973, Bob Marley and The Wailers, which included both Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, released Catch A Fire, their first album on a major record label. Catch a Fire was followed in October by Burnin', which included future classics, Get Up, Stand Up, and I Shot the Sheriff.  The latter tune captivated Eric Clapton, whose cover version in 1974 went to #1 on the Billboard charts and brought reggae to the attention of an entire new audience. The Wailers also captured the attention of Sly Stone, who asked them to open 17 of his shows on his 1973 tour. After 4 shows, Sly fired the Wailers because they were too popular! Fans wee chanting “Wailers” during Sly’s set, much to the headliner’s chagrin! Soon after that incident, KSAN-FM invited the band to perform on their Live From The Record Plant series.  This FM broadcast captures that concert on October 31, 1973, 45 years ago today.  Download this one to hear the original Wailers, before Tosh and Wailer left to pursue solo careers in 1974.

Land Down Under #4:  In Spring of 1979, Bob Marley launched the Babylon by Bus Tour in support of the album by the same name. The tour also was designed to bring Marley and reggae music to Asia and Oceania. The tour began in Japan on April 5 1979, and ended in Honolulu, Hawaii, on May 6. 1979. The tour was supposed to have started with with two shows in Ivory Coast in mid-March, but both concerts had been cancelled for unknown reasons. This soundboard recording captures Marley on the 2nd leg of the tour,in Australia, on April 27, 1979, 39 years ago today.

The Bob Marley/Grateful Dead Connection 

Believe it or not, the Grateful Dead and Bob Marley never appeared on the same bill. In fact, the Dead covered just one Marley song, Stir It Up, which was played on just 3 occasions. Yet the band, and especially Garcia, always seemed connected to Reggae music. For example, Sitting in Limbo and The Harder They Come from Jimmy Cliff were staples of the Jerry Garcia Band live repertoire. Perhaps that connection was best demonstrated in November 1982, when Jamaica hosted the World Music Festival at the Bob Marley Performing Arts Center. The roster of acts, which predominately featured new wave, punk and reggae artists, also included the one and only Grateful Dead.
