1960s - #3:  In the winter of 1968, Jimi Hendrix returned to North America for the first time since his 1967 summer shows leading in for the Monkees! He was touring in support of his second album, Axis Bold As Love, which had been released on December 1, 1967 in the UK and in early January in the US. The album climbed to #3 on the US charts, and has stood the test of time, with Rolling Stone ranking #83 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. As most of the album’s tracks were composed using complex studio recording techniques, they did not lend themselves to being played live. Only Little Wing and Spanish Magic Castle became long term fixtures in Jimi’s set lists. This soundboard recording captures Jimi during that tour, in Worcester on March 15, 1968, 58 years ago today.

Sly 1968 - Back To Back - #1:  Sly & The Family Stone was yet another band that emerged from the San Francisco music scene in the mid 1960s, They were also another band to release their debut album in 1967! While that disc, entitled A Whole New Thing. did not chart, CBS record executive Clive Davis saw potential in the band and persuaded them to write some music with more commercial appeal. Sly produced the single Dance To The Music, which was released in February 1968 and went to #8 on the Billboard charts!  They followed that in April with an album by the same name, and then just 5 months later, another album, enitled Life. This soundboard recording captures them on tour in support of both discs, during the early show at the Fillmore East on October 5, 1968, 57 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back in a few hours for the 2nd half of this Back to Back set.

1960s - #2: Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Richie Furay, Dewy Martin, Bruce Palmer and Jim Messina. Six historic rock names who came together for all too brief a period to produce some of rock's finest music, only to break apart to spawn a dozen more rock legends. For a group that barely lasted 3 years, Buffalo Springfield has one of the most impressive legacies of any rock and roll band. Their 3 albums included such classics as Mr. Soul, Burned, Sit Down I Think I Love You, Bluebird, Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing, Special Care, Kind Woman and, of course, For What Its Worth. From the ashes of their break up arose such groups as CSN/CSNY, Poco, Loggins & Messina and Souther-Hillman-Furay band, not to mention the historic solo careers of Neil Young and Stephen Stills. This soundboard recording captures the band near the end of their time together, in Gainsville on April 10, 1968, 57 years ago today. While the surviving members - Young, Stills and Furay - reunited for the first time in in October 2010 to play 2 shows at the Bridge School Benefit and then a half dozen more in early 2011, they then once gain went their separate ways.  Sadly, its doubtful the Springfield will ever play another show.

On September 17, The Doors gave a memorable performance of Light My Fire on The Ed Sullivan Show. Before the show, network executives asked that the word “higher” be removed in favor of "better', to avoid any suggestion of drug use. While the group initially agreed, once the band hit the stage, Jim Morrison, in classic 1960s example of the counter-culture defying the establishment, left the original lyric in place. A furious Ed Sullivan canceled another six appearances that had been planned, banning the Doors from the show forever. The Doors found a far more friendly televison show about a year later, however, when the appeared on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour on December 4, 1968, 56 years ago today, as captured in this TV soundboard recording. The Smothers Brothers had become a voice for the counter culture, with their show featuring musical guests such as Joan Baez, Buffalo Springfield, Cass Elliot, Cream, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix and even Pete Seeger, who had been blackballed from television for years due to his anti-war stance. Ray Manzarek said that "The Smothers Brothers were great guys, and very controversial. They wouldn’t bow to the powers-that-be and were always poking fun at the establishment."  John Densmore commented that "The Smothers Brothers were funny and they were political. Their politics were our politics, plus they were against the Vietnam war. In fact, they got kicked off the air due to their politics. We were really proud to be on their show."

In November 1966, the Jimi Hendrix Expereince performed at the Bag O'Nails nightclub in London, with Eric Clapton, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, Brian Jones, and Mick Jagger in attendance. The reaction was stunned disbelief - they had never seen or heard anyone like Jimi. McCartney was so impressed that when asked for recommendation for acts to play at Monterey Pop, he insisted on Hendrix. Jimi did not disappoint, delivering a performance for the ages, including lighting his guitar on fire! Just a few weeks later, his debut album, Are You Experienced was released in the US, climbing to #5 on the Billboard charts, The disc stayed on the charts for 106 weeks, 27 of those in the Top 40. Critics also raved about the album with author Chris Smith, calling the release "a landmark in a summer of landmark albums", Robert Christgau wrote that the disc was "a roiling sea of guitar that would change how a generation of fans heard music and conceived their on blown minds." Of course, as could only happen in the music industry, as a result of Jimi's success at Monterey Pop, he was asked to tour that summer with THE MONKEES as their opening act! Fans of The Monkees hated Jimi, who left the tour after just 6 shows. Years later, it was revealed that the whole tour had been engineered to gain more publicity for Jimi and The Experience! This TV soundboard recording captures Jimi a year after the Summer Of Love, as a guest on Durty Springfied's UK televsion series on June 5, 1968, 54 years ago today. Dusty, by the way, also has ties to 1967, as that year she released the single The Look Of Love, which climbed to #22 on the Billboard charts in the US.  She also hosted her own TV series that year, the 2nd year of her 4 year run of variety shows on BBC televison. This set features Jimi playing 2 of his own tunes - Stone Free and Voodoo Chile - as well as dueting with Dusty on Mockingbird! Note - the sound isn't perfect but this has too much historical value not to post!

1968 -  In July 1968, the Grateful Dead released their 2nd studio album, entitled Anthem Of The Sun.  The disc consisted on just 5 songs, 4 of which were 7 minutes of more in length.  It was a far cry from the early 1960s when 2 minute pop tunes ruled the day. Three of those tracks - The Other One, Alligator and Caution (Do Not Stop On The tracks) would become staples of the band's 1968 and 1969 concerts which centered on psychedelic and blues based jams.  This soundboard recording from Los Angeles from December 21, 1968, 53 years ago today, features all 3, serving as an excellent example of "primal Dead".

Cream 1968 - Back to Back - #1: In August 1968, Cream released the double album, Wheels of Fire, which went to the top of the charts in the US and reached the #3 position in the UK. The album included soon to be classics such as White Room and Born Under A Bad Sign, as well as an incredible live version of Crossroads. Despite the album’s commercial and critical success, Cream was on its last legs as a band. Lead guitarist Eric Clapton had grown tired of the psychedelic jamming that become Cream’s trademark and wanted to go in a new direction. He was heavily influenced at the time by The Band’s debut album, Music From Big Pink, with its simpler approach to songs that drew from such genres as folk, country and blues. Clapton was also tired of playing peace maker between bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker. With all 3 members in agreement that the end had come, Cream launched a farewell tour, which consisted of 22 shows at 19 venues in the US between in October and November 1968, as well two concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London on November 26. This  soundboard recording from Los Angeles captures them during that Farewell Tour on October 19, 1968, 53 years ago today! 1960s - #5: This FM broadcast captures the Jefferson Airplane in Amsterdam on September 15, 1968, 53 years ago today but its more famous for what transpired with The Doors, who they were on tour with. On this night, Jim Morrison ingested far too many of the pills and narcotics found freely on the streets of the city. As a result, when the Airplane launched into Fantastic Plastic Lover, Morrison walked onstage and began dancing to the music. It wasn’t long before the drugs, the dancing, the music, well just about everything, hit him, and he toppled over, passed out. The Doors played their set later that night, sans Jim, with Ray Manzarek filling in on vocals.

1960s - #1: While 1967 was the Summer of Love, 1968 may have been America's darkest hour. Violence appeared to be the order of the day - riots in Chicago during the Democratic National Convention, the My Lai massacre in Viet Nam, and of course, the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert kennedy. Perhaps its not a surprise that music that year also had a darker tone. In 1967, a band called the Sparrows changed their name to Steppenwolf, inspired by the Hermann Hesse novel of the same name. That novel portrays man's struggle between spirituality and aggression, similar to what was transpiring in America in 1968. About a year later, in June 1968, the band skyrocketed to fame when they released the single Born To Be Wild. The song contains the lyric "heavy metal thunder", which of course became the name for the more aggressive, thunderous genre of music that emerged as the 1960;s evolved into the 1970's. The song climbed to #2 on the Billboard singles charts, and over the years it has become one of rock’s legendary tunes. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Born To Be Wild at No. 129 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. Since being included in the soundtrack for the movie Easy Rider in 1969, Born to Be Wild has been featured in dozens of other films, such as Coming Home, Borat, Dr. Dolittle 2, and Mr. Bean's Holiday, as well as countless TV shows, such as Married With Children and Miami Vice. This soundboard recording captures Steppenwolf in Dallas on February 2, 1968, 53 years ago today, and just a few months before the release of Born To Be Wild.

1960s - #2:
Carlos Santana emerged from the San Francisco music scene in 1967, and over 5 decades  later, continues to be a mainstay on the rock and roll scene. The band has undergone a host pf changes in musical style over the years, and as part of our November theme, you’ll get to experience several of those. We’;; start you off with some early Santana, a soundboard recording from The Matrix in San Francisco on November 13, 1968, 52 years ago today. Carlos, who had yet to release an album, was leading in for Elvin Bishop, thus the short set.
