1980: The New Jersey music scene rose to prominence in 1975 thanks to Bruce Springsteen. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes were the 2nd most famous act to emerge from that scene. Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences. All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band. Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. This FM broadcast captures them taking the Jersey sound to Cleveland on September 15, 1980, 46 years ago today.

I've attended 9 Springsteen concerts, in 4 different decades (70s, 80s, 90s, & 2000's) with 2 different backing bands (the E-Streeters and those other guys he played with in the 1990s, whoever they were!). On top of that, I've seen Bruce twice in the same year 3 times - 1978, 1992 and 2003! The other 3 shows I attended were in 1984, 1984, and 1988. If that's not enough, I saw Bruce in a 5th decade, the 2010s, when he, along with Miami Steve, were special guests of Paul McCartney on September 15, 2017 at Madison Square Garden. They played I Saw her Standing There, and when the crowd wouldn't stop screaming when it was over, Macca did the only thing he could do - count them down into a 2nd rendition of the same song. Yep back to back versions of I Saw her Standing There featuring Sir Paul, Bruce and Miami Steve. Then 3 years ago, I saw Springsteen in a 6th decade, on June 16, 2022 as he was once again a guest of Macca's. Bruce played Glory Days, with Macca on backing viocals, then the 2 of them dueted on the Beatles' tune, I Wanna Be Your Man. Bruce also came back during the closing Abbey Road medley to add some guitar work! So, that's 11 dufferent times I've seen Springsteen take the stage.

In Dcember 2001, Bruce Springsteen played 5 concerts in Asbury Park, billed on the marquee as “Bruce Springsteen with the Max Weinberg 7 and Friends – A Holiday Show".  This soundboard recording captures the last of the 5 nights, on December 8, 2001, 2 dozen years ago today. The lucky ones who got tickets for the show were treated to a Springsteen concert unlike any other. Bruce's take on holiday tunes, such Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and Merry Christmas Baby, were paired with long lost favorites, such Thundercrack. E Street band members Max Weinberg, Nils Lofgren and Patti Scialfa each got to step out front on several tunes. Friends Elvis costello, Bruce Hornsby and Garland Jeffreys joined in the fun, Another of Bruce’s friends, Southside Johnny, expressed the feelings of everyone in attendance when he led the band through his classic tune, I Don’t Want To Go Home. This one is a holiday treat!

The Belgium Rhythm 'n' Blues Festival (BRBF), often referred to as Blues Peer for short, had been held annually in the town of Peer since 1985. The festival initially started as a two-day event, but in the early 1990s it became three days with the full inclusion of Friday, so that teh event had enough space to include local Belgian bands. As with other festival, Blues Peer expanded to include other generes of music.  This FM broadcast captures Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes at the festival on July 19, 2009, 16 years ago today.

When Bruce Springsteen took the rock world by storm in 1975, he opened the door for other Jersey Shore acts to try to hit the big time. Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes are probably the 2nd best known band from that era. Unfortunately, Van Zandt left the band in 1979, and they never did achieve national prominence. That said, Southside and the Jukes have always been fantastic live performers, as evidenced in this soundboard recording from the Capitol Theater on their home turf in NJ, September 20, 1985, 39 years ago today.

The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone. While Southside never rose to the prominence that Springsteen achieved, the band remained a vibrant live force in the 1990s and beyond, touring almost non stop! This FM broadcast captures them taking the Jersey sound to Paris on April 3 1992, 31 years ago today. Download this one, then come back on April 8 for the 2nd half of this Same Tour, Different Show set.

1981 - The Capitol Theatre in Passaic NJ was unlike any concert hall in world. Rock and roll venue by night, the Capitol was an x-rated movie theater by day. The theater was owned and run by legendary concert promoter John Scher, the Bill Graham of the East Coast. Scher started producing shows at the 3200-seat Capitol in 1971, soon after the Fillmore East closed. Thanks to Scher, many of rock's largest acts, such as The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, The Who and Bruce Springsteen, would play shows at the Capitol long after they became superstars selling our 50,000 seat stadiums. (For a complete history of the Capitol, including copies of playbills and a list of every show ever at the venue, go here.) This WNEW_FM broadcast captures the Capito's 10th anniversary concert on December 10, 1981, 41 years ago today.  The show ran well into the next morning, and featured performances by Edgar Winter, the Allman Brothers Band, Steve Forbert, Gary US Bonds, Dave Edminds, Jack Bruce and Southside Johnny!

Southside Johnny 1979 - Same Tour, Different Show Double Play - #1: When Bruce Springsteen took the rock world by storm in 1975, he opened the door for other Jersey Shore acts to try to hit the big time. Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes are probably the 2nd best known band from that era. Unfortunately, Van Zandt left the band in 1979, and they never did achieve national prominence. This FM broadcast captures Southside and the Jukes across the river from their NJ home, at te Palladium in NYC on November 7 1979, 43 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back on November 14 for the 2nd half of this Same Tour, Different Show Double Play.
