I saw Jerry Garcia solo on 4 occasions, the last time in 1991, a show I only got to attend thanks to my job! About 8 years or so into my business career, I wound up running Event Marketing for a large, East Coast corporation. In other words, I was in charge of huge expenditures of cash designed to keep customers happy and entice them to buy more products from us. That included sponsorship of the US Tennis Open, Broadway Theater tickets, seats for Yankee and Met Games, special events at locations such as the Intrepid, Lincoln Center, numerous museums and Ellis Island, and perhaps most important of all, a luxury box at Madison Square Garden. Now, in theory, luxury box tickets were strictly for use in entertaining customers. In reality, there were far too many events at MSG, and far too many tickets each night, to ensure that only customers would use them. And besides, since I was in charge of these tickets, I occasionally needed to go to an event to make sure we were getting our money’s worth! One of my first visits to the MSG luxury box was on November 15, 1991, 20 years ago today, to catch the Jerry Garcia Band. As I mentioned in my September 10 Grateful Dead post, Jerry was playing extremely well in the fall of 1991, with some feeling that this was his last run of great shows before his untimely death 4 years later. Headlining the World’s Greatest Arena clearly inspired Jerry, as he delivered a 2 set show filled with stellar performances and unexpected gems. The middle of set 1 included covers of Van Morrison’s He Aint Give You None, Dylan’s Simple Twist Of Fate, Clapton’s Lay Down Sally and The Band’s The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. During set 2, Garcia broke out a covers of Shining Star, from the Manhattan’s, and another Van The Man classic, Bright Side of The Road. He sent us all home happy with a beautiful rendition of What A Wonderful World, which I’m sure made Louis Armstrong smile from up in heaven. This excellent audience recording captures every note of that amazing show. While the 11-09-1991 Hampton concert, with Bruce Hornsby sitting in, was officially released as Volume 7 of the Pure Jerry series, I think this MSG show just might have been better!
