Bruce Springsteen - 1978-09-30 - Atlanta, GA (FM)

1978 - On May 23, 1978, Bruce Springsteen launched a 115 show tour that would last through the end of the year in support of his new album, Darkness On The Edge Of Town, which was released on June 2. Darkness was Springsteen’s first disc since Born To Run In 1975; the 3 years wait the result of a legal battle with his former manager, Mike Appel. All 10 songs from the album found their way into the Bruce’s set list at some point during the tour, with Badlands taking the prominent role of show opener. Perhaps the long wait for the album had increased the level of emotion among Bruce’s loyal fans, as the shows on this tour are often described as intense. Springsteen biographer Dave Marsh wrote, for example, “The screaming intensity of those '78 shows are part of rock and roll legend in the same way as Dylan's 1966 shows with the Band, the Rolling Stones' tours of 1969 and 1972, and the Who's Tommy tour of 1969: benchmarks of an era.” This soundboard recording captures Bruce during that historic tour in Atlanta on September 30, 1978, 41 years ago today/

Paul McCartney - 2005-09-30 - Madison Square Garden, NY, NY (Ex Aud)

2005 - In September 2005, Paul McCartney launched the “US” tour, his 2nd North American tour in 3 years. His 2002 Back in The US tour had been a triumphant return to the stage for Sir Paul, who had been absent from the concert scene for almost 10 years at that time. The US Tour not only continued the momentum from 2002, but also showcased his critically acclaimed album, Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. On that album, McCartney played every instrument himself, much like on his debut album, McCartney back in 1970. In addition, at the suggestion of George Martin, Paul employed Nigel Goodrich as his producer. Goodrich was able to do something few would have dared – namely, challenge Sir Paul to be at his best. According to McCartney, "Nigel refused to allow me to sing songs that he didn't like, which was very cheeky of him”.  Four tunes from the album – Jenny Wren, English Tea, Follow Me, and Fine Line – all were included in the set list. Of course, that still left plenty of room for a host of earlier solo material, several wonderful anecdotes, and 2 dozen Beatles classics. My wife and I were fortunate enough to see Sir Paul twice on this tour, on September 30 and October 1 at Madison Square Garden  This excellent audience recording captures the first of those 2 shows, on September 30, 2005, 14 years ago this very day.

1977 - As long time readers of this blog know, I've made my case on numerous occasions for 1977 being the finest year in the Grateful Dead's epic history of live performances. As such, I've already posted every Spring 1977 soundboard that's available and hasn't been officially released. While the 2nd half of 1977 doesn't get quite the attestation that the first portion does, the band continued to deliver stellar live shows from September to December. In fact, the first show of the fall, September 3 at Englishtown (also my 1st Dead show!) was officially released as part of the Dick's Picks series. Concerts from November 4, 5 and 6 and December 29 also were officially released, as were portions of shows from October 7, 11, 14 and !6, November 2 and December 30. We've done our best to bring you every soundboard from that year that hasn't been officially released. Here's another from Seattle on September 29, 1977, 42 years ago today.

2004 - On November 9, 2004, Elton John released Peachtree Road, his 28th studio album. The disc took its name from a street in Atlanta where one of Elton’s 4 homes was located. The disc climbed to #17 on the Billboard charts in the US and reached #21 in the UK. As part of the promotional efforts for Peachtree Road, Elton appeared on Italian Radio on September 29, 2004, 15 years ago today, to give folks a sneak peak at the album, along with a host of classics!

Led Zeppelin - 1971-09-29 - Osaka, Japan (SBD)  

1971 - From December 1970 to March 1971, Led Zeppelin spent time at Basing Street Studios and later, Headley Grange, working on their 4th studio album. During these sessions, the band decided that the album would have no title! After the adverse reviews their 3rd album had received, despite going to #1 on the charts in the US and UK, Led Zep decided that their 4th album should be almost anonymous. In place of a title, each band member would pick a symbol that would appear on the record’s inner sleeve. “We decided that on the fourth album, we would deliberately play down the group name, and there wouldn't be any information whatsoever on the outer jacket", Jimmy Page explained. "Names, titles and things like that do not mean a thing.” The record company strongly opposed the decision, but the band, using their considerable clout, held fast. Clearly the band knew what they were doing. The 4th Led Zep album – unofficially known by any and all of the following names: Led Zeppelin IV, Untitled, Zoso, and Runes - would be their biggest yet. Since its release on November 8, 1971, the disc has shipped over 23 million units in the United States alone, making it the third-best-selling album ever in the US. The album featured such classics as Black Dog, Rock & Roll, When The Levee Breaks, Going To California,and of course, the one and only, Stairway to Heaven. This soundboard recording captures Led Zep on September 29, 1971, 1971, 4 dozen years ago today, in in Osaka just before the release of Led Zep IV.  Listening to Plant introduce Sta airway as the new one from our upcoming album, long before it became the tune most classic rock sations rank as the greatest of all time, really puts things in proper historical context!

For October 2019, we're introducing a brand new theme that we call European Vacation   In other words, every show will take place across the pond from the USA on the continent which was home to the philosophers of Greece, the Renaissance, the birth of democracy and. of course, The Beatles (not to mention the Stones, Led Zep, Pink Floyd and The Who!),  Our journey will take us to at least a dozen countries and span 6 decades (from the 1960s to the 2010s).

Eric Clapton - 1974-09-28 - Hampton, VA (SBD)

1974 - The year 1974 marked EC's triumphant return to the top of the rock world. After playing at the Rainbow Concert in January 1973, Clapton worked to kick his heroin addiction and finally was united with long time love Patti Boyd, who had been the inspiration for Layla. He recorded the album 461 Ocean Blvd in the spring of 1974. The disc would go to #1 on the Billboard charts after its release, as would the single from the disc, I Shot The Sheriff. EC went on the road in support of the album in June 1974, his first tour since 1970. This soundboard recording captures Slowhand during that famed comeback tour, on September 28, 1974, 45  years ago today, in Hampton VA. By the way, the bootleg's title, a Drunkard's Night,  lets you know that a new demon had replaced his addiction to heroin, namely a growing dependency on alcohol

Frank Sinatra - 1986-09-27 - Milan, Italy (SBD)

1986 - In 1986, the then 70 year old Frank Sinatra (he’d turn 71 on December 15 of that year) continued to tour to packed houses in the United States. While most his performances alternated between the Golden Nugget resort and casino in Las Vegas, and its sister property in Atlantic City, he also filled indoor arenas such as the Spectrum in Philadelphia and outdoor venues such as The Garden State Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ. Frank also played 2 shows overseas in 1986, on September 25 in Madrid, Spain and September 27 in Milan, Italy. This soundboard recording captures that Milan concert, which took place 33 years ago today. From the research I've done, it appears this was Frank's first performance in Italy since 1962! In addition, Sinatra message boards praise the set list for this show, and cite the version of All The Way as the best ever performed by Old Blue Eyes. In 1997, a decade after he released his breakthrough disc Bring The Family, John Hiatt released the album, Little Head. Unfortunately, Little Head was the complete opposite of Bring The Family - both a commercial and a critical flop. That didn't stop Hiatt from spending the next two years on the road in support of the album. This FM broadcast captures Hiatt in Aptos Ca on September 26, 1998,  21 years ago today.

Bruce Springsteen - 1975-09-26 - Iowa City, IA (SBD)

1975 - On August 13, 1975, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band began a five-night, 10-show stand at New York's Bottom Line. The engagement, broadcast live on WNEW-FM, attracted major media attention and convinced many skeptics that Springsteen was for real. Decades later, Rolling Stone magazine would name the stand as one of the 50 Moments That Changed Rock and Roll. As the Bottom Line run ended, the album Born To Run was released. The album reached number 3 on the Billboard charts, and while there were no hit singles, the title track, Thunder Road, Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out and Jungleland became staples of album oriented rock radio stations. Born to Run is now considered by many critics and fans to be among the best rock and roll albums of all time and Springsteen's finest work. Amidst all that publicity and attention, Bruce continued his small club and college tour that took him across America's heartland. Grateful Dead - 1980-09-25 - San Francisco CA (SBD + HQ AUD)

1980 - In 1980, the Grateful Dead celebrated their 15th anniversary. To commemorate the occasion, the band embarked on a very special fall tour, playing runs at the Warfield Theater (15 shows) in San Francisco, The Saenger Theatre (2 shows) in New Orleans and Radio City Music Hall (8 shows) in New York where each night opened with an acoustic set, followed by 2 electric sets. The last night at Radio City, on October 31 was broadcast on closed circuit TV. These 3 runs would spawn the live albums Reckoning and Dead Set, which were released in 1981. This soundboard (1 set) and excellent audience (2 sets) recording captures the band during that fall run, in San Francisco on September 25, 1980, 39 years ago today.

In Memory Of Robert Hunter

Sadly, Robert Hunter, long time lyricist for the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia's writing partner, passed away today at the age of 78.  You can read about it here.

In memory of Hunter, here's video one of his solo concerts from 1978 from the Capitol Theater in Passaic, on a night he lead in for Garcia. I was there that night. In addition, we have re-posted the links to every Robert Hunter show on this blog - go here to download the memories he has left us.

2015 - In October 2015, Joe Jackson released the album Fast Forward, a disc dedicated to 4 different cities, New York, Berlin, Amsterdam, and New Orleans. The album features 16 tracks, 4 per city, and each city's specific songs were arranged and recorded there. Jackson worked with a different set of musicians in each location. About a month before the album's release, on September 24, 2015, 4 years ago today, Joe appeared live on WFUV-FM in New York playing a set that previewed the new disc, while also reaching back to his new wave days from the late 1970s!

1997 - When U2 released their 9th studio album, Pop, in March 1997, it had been 4 years since their last disk, Zooropa. Clearly fans were anxiously awaiting he disc, as upon release it went to #1 in 35 different countries. The band would eventually release 6 singles from the disc, more than from any other album they had produced. Yet, despite that incredible early commercial success, Pop would eventually become one of the more disappointing moments in U2’s long, storied career. The album was a new direction for the band, combining influences from genres such as techno, dance, and electronica, and utilizing techniques such as sampling, loops, and programmed drum machines. Neither fans nor critics knew what to make of the band’s new sound. While Rolling Stone praised the disc, giving it a 4 star rating (out of 5), famed critic Robert Christgau called it “a dud”. To be honest, he didn’t write anything, he just used a picture of a bomb to indicate his displeasure! The band eventually agreed with that assessment, recording numerous songs from the album for re-release, and dropping most of the material from it during their later tours. In 1997, however, they were still in full support of the album, launching the massive Popmart tour that would feature 94 shows on 6 different continents. This soundboard recording captures U2 in Sarajevo on September 23, 1997, 22 years ago today. .

1994 - On March 1994, Elvis Costello  released Brutal Youth,  the first album recorded with his band the Attractions since Blood and Chocolate  in 1986. All the albums in between had been recorded with session musicians. Brutal Youth was the third of Costello's albums to peak at number two in the UK Albums Chart, after Armed Forces in 1979 and Get Happy!! in 1980. In the US, Brutal Youth went to #34 on the Billboard charts.  Costello and the Attractions went on a world tour in support of the disc, playing 9 shows in Japan in September 1994. This soundboard recording captures the 4th night of that run, in Tokyo, on September 22, 1994, 25 years ago today.

Tom Petty  - 1985-09-22 - Champaign, IL (SBD) 

1985 - As mentioned in our Willie Nelson post this month, the first Farm Aid benefit concert was held in Champaign, IL on September 22, 1985, 34 years ago today. One of the highlights of that show, as captured in this FM Broadcast, was Tom Petty's performance. About halfway through his set, Petty was joined by Bob Dylan, whose plea for the American farmers at Live Aid, has spurred Neil Young, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp to launch Farm Aid. The Clash - 1979-09-21 - The Palladium, NY (SBD)

1979 - London’s Calling, the album released by the Clash in early 1980 in the US, has taken its place among rock’s masterpieces. Rolling Stone ranked it 8th on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time and #1 on its list of the best albums of the 1980s. Robert Christgau gave the album an A+ rating, calling it the best double album since Exile on Main Street. London’s Calling was the album that truly made The Clash the only band that matters. The disc is not only renowned for its music, but also for its album cover. That cover, featuring a picture of bassist Paul Simonon smashing his instrument, surrounded by the album title in lettering mirroring that used on the cover of Elvis Presley’s first album, has become a rock icon. Ironically, photographer Pennie Smith didn’t want the shot used because it was slightly out of focus as she was backing up to avoid debris from Simonon’s smashed bass. Fortunately, Joe Strummer insisted that it become the cover shot, and the rest as they say, is history. Smith shot her historic photo on September 21, 1979, 4 decades ago today, during a Clash concert at the Palladium in New York City. One For Woody - 2000-09-21- Roseland Ballroom, New York, NY (HQ AUD)

2000 - On August 26, 2000, Allen Woody, the bass player for Gov't Mule, Woody was found dead at the Marriott Courtyard Motel in Queens, NY.  A preliminary autopsy was inconclusive, but he was subsequently determined to have died of a heroin overdose. Warren Haynes and Matt Abts, the surviving members of the Mule, hosted an all star tribute to their late band mate and friend at the Roseland Ballroom in New York, on September 21, 2000, 19 years ago today.  This high quality audience recording captures the entire show, which feature performances ny Phil Lesh & friends, the Allman Brothers, The Black Crowes and a 14 song set by Warren & Matt featuring a host of guests (go here for details). Warren also sat in with the Allmans, which spurred his full time return to the band.

A.R.M.S Concert - 1983-09-20 - London UK (SBD)

1983 - Stricken by multiple sclerosis, Ronnie Lane, the ex-bassist for both the Small Faces and Faces, organized a charity concert the Royal Albert Hall in London on September 20, 1983, 3 dozen years ago today, to raise money to combat the disease.  The show featured a star-studded line-up of British musicians, including Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Steve Winwood, Andy Fairweather Low, Bill Wyman, Kenney Jones and Charlie Watts. Lane appeared at the end of the show to thank the audience and the musicians, then took the  vocals on the closing tune, Goodnight Irene. The concert marked the first time Clapton, Beck and Page, each a former lead guitarist for The Yardbirds, performed together on stage. 1970 -  On September 14, 1970, The Byrds released the album Untitled, a double disc featuring both live and studio material. The disc was a critical and commercial success, being heralded as a return to form for the band. Three days after the album’s release The Byrds took up residence at the Whiskey A Go Go for a 3 night stand, 2 shows each night, with the Flying Burrito Brothers as their opening act. The line-up of original member Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Gene Parsons and Skip Battin had developed a reputation for stellar live performances, and the shows at the Whiskey would be no exception. These soundboard recordings capture both the early and late shows from the last night at the Whiskey, on September 19, 1970, 49 years ago today. The tape of the late show also includes the Burrito Brothers set. In fact, The Burrito Brothers stayed on stage all night, playing back up for The Byrds during their set. Download this one to hear The Byrds at their live peak, on a night when Roger McGuinn would jam with former band mate Chris Hillman, who had left the Byrds in 1968 to join the Flying Burrito Brothers!  And of course, McGuinn and Hillman would reunite in the late 1970s, along with fellow former Byrd Gene Clark, to form McGuinn, Clark and Hilllman.

2002 - On June 11, 2002, David Bowie released the album, Heathen, which would reach # 14 on the Billboard charts, his highest charting album in the US since Tonight in 1984. The disc also earned some of his strongest reviews since Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) in 1980. Worldwide, Heathen sold over two million copies and ranked in the top 5 on the charts in England, France, Germany, Norway and Denmark. Most significantly, the album dealt with Bowie’s impressions of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the US. Bowie was living in NY at the time of the attacks, and opened the Concert For New York City at Madison Square Garden in October 2001 that raised money for victims of the tragedy. Heathen, with songs such as Slow Burn, that described a world coming apart and gripped by fear, and Sunday, with lyrics such as "Nothing remains...everything has changed”, reflected the devastating impact of that day.  This FM broadcast captures Bowie in London at the BBC Studios on September 18, 2002, 17 years ago today, playing a set featuring a host of tracks from Heathen.

1976 - Although Elton John wrapped up his Louder Than A Concorde on August 17 at Madison Square Garden, the last of 7 shows at that venue, that performance was not the final show he played that year. Exactly 1 month later, Captain Fantastic played a solo gig at the Edinburgh Playhouse Theater in Scotland on September 17, 1976, 43 years ago today, as captured in this soundboard recording The Playhouse had opened on August 12, 1929 as a movie theater seating 3400, during an era when such venues were designed to create a sense of grandeur and opulence. The Theater closed in 1973, but was saved from the demolition heap and turned into a concert hall. Crosby & Nash, Santana, The Clash, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, and The Who, just to name a few, all played the venue. 1987 - As the 1980s progressed, U2 moved from their new wave/dance roots toward a more serious and complex musical style. The albums War in 1983 and The Unforgettable Fire in 1984 expanded the band’s audience beyond the UK. Their set at Live Aid in 1985 brought them worldwide acclaim and positioned them to headline the 1986 Amnesty International Tour. None of that could have prepared the band or the music world, however, for what transpired in 1987 when they released their 5th album, The Joshua Tree. The album was filled with lyrics and music that, in Rolling Stone’s words, turned “spiritual quests and political struggles into uplifting stadium sing-alongs.” In the US, the disc debuted at #7 on the Billboard charts, then quickly climbed to #1, where it stayed for 9 weeks. The album yielded the band’s first two #1 singles, With or Without You and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, as well as its first 2 Grammy Awards. In April 1987, the band became just the 4th act to appear on the cover of Time Magazine, demonstrating that their influence had transcended the music world. This soundboard recording captures U2 on tour in support of their landmark album in Boston on September 22, 1987, 32 years ago today.
