The Beatles - 1966-06-30 - Tokyo, Japan (SBD)

1960s - #5 - Originally built to host the judo competition at the 1964 Summer Olympics, Tokyo’s Budokan Hall eventually became one of the most famous rock and roll venues in the world. Budokan became a household name in the late 1970s, when Cheap Trick and Bob Dylan released live albums recorded at the venue. Over 20 other bands have since released albums “live from Budokan.” Of course, the arena’s popularity has also become one of rock’s running jokes, with John Hiatt going so far as to release an album entitled Hiatt Comes Alive at Budokan? that actually was recorded in the US! Back in 1966, however, long before all the notoriety, Budokan hosted its first rock concerts, when the Beatles performed 5 shows at the venue from June 30 to July 2nd. Their visit elicited protests from segments of the Japanese population who felt that the concerts defiled the sanctity of the martial arts arena. The soundboard recording captures the first Beatles concert at Budokan, on June 30, 1966, 46 years ago today. Download this one to hear the Fab Four during the last year they would tour!

Robert Plant - 2005-06-29 - Nashville TN (SBD)

2000s - #5:  In April 2005, a quarter century after Led Zeppelin disbanded, Robert Plant released his eighth solo album, entitled The Might ReArranger. The disc was also his second with his band Strange Sensation. According to Plant, The Mighty ReArranger is a Fate-like entity that controls the affairs of humanity. As such, the disc, The album, which contains a blend of world and Western music, explores themes of mysticism and fate. Thee disc went to #22 2 the Billboard and was nominated for two Grammy Awards: Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance for Shine It All Around and Best Hard Rock Performance for Tin Pan Valley. This soundboard recording broadcast captures Plant 2 m onths after the release of the album, in Nashville on  June 29, 2005, 11 years ago today.

1980s - #5 -  The Grateful Dead played the SPAC 4 times, in 1983, 1984, 1985 and 1988. The 1985 show set an attendance record at the venue when over 40,000 fans showed up, packing the lawn far beyond its untended capacity, Since then, the SPAC has limited attendance to 25,000. This FM broadcast captures the final time the Dead played Saratoga, on June 28, 1988, 2 dozen years ago today.

1970s - #5 - When promoter Bill Graham decided to close both the Fillmore East and West in 1971 (you can read his letter explaining the decison in this article), he scheduled a series of concerts to send both venues out in style.  For the Fillmore East, he selected the Allman Brothers to headline the last 3 concerts at the venue. After all,  the Allmans had played so many shows at the Fillmore East, including the ones that were recoreded for the legendary At Fillmore East live album, that they were nicknamed “Bill Graham’s House band”.  The Beach Boys, however, who were on the bill for the the final show at the Fillmore, on June 27, 1971, 45 years ago today, had other ideas. When they arrived at the theater and began unload their gear, they insisted that they go on last.  Graham, who had little tolerance for anything that wasn't done his way quickly told the band, "Well, just pack up your shi*t. I have my closing band."  The Beach Boys had to swallow their pride and went on 5th, out of 7 bands, as captured in this FM Broadcast.

The Who - 2000-06-27 - Auburn Hills, MI (SBD) 

2000s - #4: After playing 7 shows in late 1999 that highlighted material from Pete Townshend’s Lifehouse project, the band decided to embark on a full scale tour in 2000. By the way, the Lifehouse project was originally intended as a rock opera that would follow Tommy, but instead morphed into Who’s Next, one of the greatest albums in rock history. That said, Townshend continually revisited material from the Lifehouse project throughout his career, including the 1999-2000 tours. In addition to original members Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle, the band included Zack Starkey on drums and John Bundrick on keyboards. The Who played 38 dates, beginning on June 6 in New York, and concluding on November 27 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. This soundboard recording captures the band on June 27, 2000, 12 years ago today, in Michigan. Download this one to hear The Who continue to experiment with tunes from what might be their signature album, almost 30 years after its release.

Pink Floyd - 1977-06-25 - Cleveland, OH (HQ AUD) 

1970s - #4: Spring 1977 was an incredible time for rock music, with some of the largest names in the business, representing numerous genres, all on tour at once. Pink Floyd was one of the acts on the road at that time, promoting their latest album, Animals as part on the In The Flesh Tour. The tour featured the famous character inflatables puppets, a pyrotechnic "waterfall" and one of the biggest and most elaborate stages to date, including umbrella-like canopies that would raise from the stage to protect the band from the elements. The set list each night consisted of playing the entire Animals disc, then the entire Wish You Were here album, and ending with encores from Dark Side of The Moon. Throughout the tour, Roger Waters demonstrated all sorts of aggressive behavior, from arguing with the lighting crew in NY, to yelling at the audiences for talking during quieter numbers, to even spitting in the face of a fan. Waters began to realize that fame had alienated him from his audience, which became part of the inspiration behind Pink Floyd's next project, The Wall. Despite the difficulties on this tour, the band's playing was, for the most part superb as evident in this  high quality audience tape from June 25, 1977, 38 years ago today,

Bruce Hornsby - 1989-06-24 - Telluride, CO (SBD)

1980s  #4 - Having seen Bruce Hornsby over a dozen times, counting solo shows and stints with the Grateful Dead, I've learned one important thing - he's an artist who refuses to be categorized. Not content to rest on his laurels or simply play the same sort of music over and over, Hornsby has branched out into jazz, bluegrass and is even currently working on a Broadway musical. This soundboard from the Telluride Bluegrass Festival on June 24, 1989, 23 years ago today, captures one of Bruce's earliest forays outside the world of rock and roll. Joined by the New Grass Revival, Hornsby plays a great set mixing his own tunes, some Leon Russell numbers (the New Grass Revival had backed Leon!) and assorted covers from The Beatles, The Stones, The Dead, Bob Dylan and Buddy Holly! This is an amazing set and one you'll definitely want for your collection.

A Life Well Lived

Nine days ago, my dad passed away from complications from a difficult surgery. He would have been 79 this August. The viewing and funeral were held this past Wednesday and Thursday, 2 events that were both a final celebration of a life well lived and a time of sadness for all those who knew him. In thinking about my dad, I struggled with the fact that while I love history, no history book will ever record the events of his life. We record for posterity the sagas of presidents and poets, of actors and musicians, of heroic leaders and horrific dictators, but the lives of men like my dad are deemed “ordinary” and no book will document his accomplishments. Such a shame, because my dad was far from “ordinary”:

• Though my dad was only 8 when he lost his father so he had no role model growing up, he somehow became an extraordinary father, who always put the needs of his wife, children and grandchildren before his own.
• He was a devoted husband, who married his childhood sweetheart, loved her with all his heart, and remained by her side until his death, faithful to the end in an era where divorce has become commonplace.
• Though he had never gone to college, he raised 2 children who both attended Ivy League universities, and his grandchildren appear to be on the same path.
• While my sister and I will always cherish our educations, no college ever taught us more important lessons than my dad did, lessons that family comes first, that giving to and helping others is the highest calling, that work ethic is the key to success and that no goal is unattainable if you dedicate yourself to it.
• He adored his grandchildren, and spending time with them, being silly with them, making them laugh, and showing them what family truly means.
• He was a great boss at work, helping those who worked for him not only move their careers forward, but also live better lives.
• My wife and my sister’s husband never thought of him as an “in law”, but as their 2nd father, a man who treated them as if he raised them himself. (And, of course, they feel the same way about my Mom).
• Every close friend my sister and I ever had referred to him as “Dad” (and of course, called my mother “Mom”) because he treated them as if they were family.

Hundreds showed up for the viewing on Wednesday, so many that we overflowed the room and spilled into the hallways and outside. That was the moment that I realized it didn’t matter if the history books ever recorded my dad’s life. It didn’t matter because he would be remembered in a much more important place - the hearts and souls of every person he ever touched.

I love you dad, and I’ll miss you every day of the rest of my life, but I’ll make it through because I know you’ll be with me always, in my heart and my soul, guiding me as you always have. Thank you for teaching me all that you did, especially the value of a life well lived.

2000s - #3: On September 19, 1970, at Worthy Farm between the small villages of Pilton and Pylle in the county of Somerset, six miles east of the town of Glastonbury, the T-Rex headlined the first Glastonbury Festival before a growth of 1500 people. Over 4 decades later, the Glastonbury Festival, now held in June over a 4 day period, is still going strong, with crowds a 100 times larger than those at the first concert! Artists such as Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Van Morrison, The Rolling Stones, Tom Jones, The Who, U2 and Stevie Wonder have all headlined the festival. The first Glastonbury festival of the 21st century, ran from June 23 to 25, featuring over 500 different acts on 8 unique stages and/or tents.  The Counting Crows appeared on the Pyramid Stage on Friday, June 23, 2000, 12 years ago today, as captured in this FM broadcast.

McGuinn, Clark & Hillman - 1979-06-22 - Capitol Theatre, Passaic NJ (FM)

1970s - #3 - On December 8, 1977 and February 9, 1978, David Crosby sat in with former Byrds band mates Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark and Chris Hillman for 2 memorable and historic shows. While the Byrds never officially re-formed, those shows did lead to McGuinn, Clark and Hillman touring and recording together. In early 1979, they released their self titled debut album, which spawned the top 40 hit, Don’t You Write Her Off Like That. The album was a disappointment to both fans and critics, who were expecting the Byrds but instead of crisp harmonies and McGuinn’s trademark Rickenbacker guitar, got disco rhythms, slick production, strings and horns. McGuinn, Clark and Hillman went on tour in support of the album in the Spring of 1979, and fortunately their live shows featured plenty of material from their days with The Byrds. This FM broadcast captures the trio on June 22, 1979, 33 years ago today, at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ. Download this one to hear the closest thing to the Byrds since their break up.

1970s - #2 - It was during my sophomore year in college back in 1979 that I first encountered the legend of the Santana album entitled Lotus. One of my roommates was a huge fan of Carlos, and he explained that Lotus was a live disc, recorded during a July 1973 tour of Japan, that featured some of Santana’s finest guitar work. The problem was that CBS records refused to release the disc in the US. The record company didn’t think the US public would be receptive to the long improvisational music that comprised Lotus. Nor did Capitol think anyone would pay for a triple album. As a result, the disc was only released overseas, and could only be bought in the US as an illegal import, much like a bootleg. Making the record unavailable only served to make it even more desirable. My roomie finally got his copy of the holy grail of Santana disks when his girlfriend (later his wife) plunked down the then incredible sum of $60 to buy him a copy of Lotus for Christmas. Just prior to the Japanese shows recorded for Lotus, Carlos played in Anchorage on June 21, 1973, 39 years ago today. Download this one to hear Carlos warm up for the legendary Lotus shows!

Dire Straits - 1992-06-20 - Bedfordshire, UK (SBD) 

1990s - #5: After disbanding Dire Straits in 1988, Mark Knopfler reformed the band three years later in 1991. The released the album on Every Street later that year, which sold over 8 million copies and went # 1 on the UK charts while reaching #12 on the Billboard charts in the US. Despite that success, by comparison to their prior release Brothers In Arms, the new disc was both a critical and commercial disappointment. The band launched a massive 300 show, 2 year tour in support of the album. The strain of that tour, however, proved to be too much for the band, and in its aftermath, Knopfler dissolved Dire Straits for the 2nd, and final, time.This soundboard recording captures Dire Striats during that final tour, on June 20, 1992, 2 decades ago today.

1960s - #4 -Forty Seven years ago today, The Beatles played 2 concerts at the Palais de Sportes in Paris, France on June 20, 1965. The Paris shows were the first of a 9 date, 15 concert European tour, the last time the Beatles would play live on that continent. The set lists for the 2 shows included several songs from their most recent album, Beatles For Sale, released back in December 1964 in the UK. Many of the songs on that album were covers, as the Beatles were short of new material at the time. In the US, that album was split into 2 discs, Beatles ’65 and Beatles VI, as Capitol Records, mistakenly felt that the band’s material wasn’t suited to the US Market. All 3 discs went to number 1 on the charts. Interestingly, right before they left for this tour, The Beatles spent 4 days in the studio working on their next disc. That album, entitled Help, would feature almost all new material with only 2 covers, the last time the band ever recorded a composition that they didn’t write. In addition to the title track, Help would feature a tune that would become the most recorded song in Yesterday. The album would be the precursor to such landmark records as Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Pepper’s, The White Album and Abbey Road. Download this soundboard recording of their Paris concerts, therefore, to hear the Beatles on the cusp of taking rock in directions no one had ever imagined. 1960s - #3 - It was the first major rock festival, hosting over 200,000 people over 3 days, with 90,000 fans in attendance at its peak on Sunday night. It was the place where Jimi Hendrix and The Who made their U.S. debuts. It marked the first major public appearances by Janis Joplin and Otis Redding. It embodied the counter culture spirit of San Francisco, with almost all the acts performing for free. It was the first multi-racial and multi-genre musical event. And it marked the beginning of what ever since been known as the Summer of Love. It was officially, The Monterey International Pop Music Festival, better known simply as Monterey Pop. On opening night, Friday, June 16, 1967, 45 years ago today, the featured act was Simon & Garfunkel, a duo who had taken folk rock to a new level. During 1965 and 1966, the pair had three top 5 singles, Homeward Bound at #5, I Am A Rock at #3 and Sounds of Silence, which climbed all the way to the top spot. The next 3 years would bring even more artistic and commercial success, though it ended all too soon when the duo broke up in 1970. Tom Petty - 1985-06-16 - Saratoga Springs, NY  (SBD)

1980s - #3 -  Famed sports writer Red Smith once penned that to get to Saratoga from New York City, “you drive north for about 175 miles, turn left on Union Avenue and go back 100 years,”  Smith gave those directions over a half century ago but his quip endures because so much of historic Saratoga is still intact. Along Union Avenue, Victorian houses still stand proudly with and their wraparound porches fronting deep lawns.  On Broadway, the town’s well-preserved main street still evokes a late 19th century spa resort. For six weeks each summer, Saratoga’s population of 26,000 doubles as people come to watch America’s top horses and jockeys compete on dirt and turf at Saratoga Race Course, which turns 153 years old this year.  The site is to horse racing what Fenway Park and Wrigley Field are to baseball, an awe-inspiring monument to a bygone era. The area also boasts one of the premier outdoor concert venues in the US, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Just off the Avenue of The Pines in Saratoga Spa State Park, the SPAC is the official summer home of the New York City Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra, both of which are in residence for two or three weeks during the summer. The Doors played the first rock concert at the SPAC on September 1, 1968, and since then, the venue has featured some of the biggest names in the business each and every summer. It even hosted Farm Aid in 2013.  This soundboard recording captures Tom Petty at the SPAC on June 16, 1985, 27 years ago today.

Rolling Stones - 1990-06-16 - Madrid, Spain (SBD) 

1990s - #4 - On August 29, 1989, the Rolling Stones released the album Steel Wheels, their first disc in 3 years. Two days later, they launched a US tour in support of the album, their firsty live concerts in the US since 1981, a stretch of 8 years. During that time, stories had abounded that the tensions between Jagger and Richards might lead to the end to the band. So, fans were relieved that the Glimmer Twins had resolved their issues and fired up that the Stones were returning to the stage. The album went to #3 on the Billboard charts in the US, and climbed one spot higher than that in the UK. In addition, The tour was a massive financial success. After completing their North American run in late 1989, and then a short tour of Japan in early 1990, the Stones launched a European leg in May 1990, under the name The Urban Jungle Tour. Regardless of what moniker The Stones gave the tour, the result was the same, unprecedented ticket sales and sold out stadiums in every city. Neil Young - 1989-06-14 - Wantagh, NY (SBD)

1980s - #2: - Neil Young has always been a man who marched to the beat of his own drummer. Just take a look a the years 1988 to 1990 for a perfect example. In 1988, Neil briefly reunited with Crosby, Stills and Nash to record the album American Dream, but he chose not to tour with his sometime band mates. The next year, he recorded the solo album Freedom, a disc which included several songs featuring the heavy use of feedback and distortion. In 1990, he was back with Crazy Horse, recording the album Ragged Glory, an album similar to Freedom in its use of distortion. Those 2 discs foreshadowed the rise of grunge, with musicians such as Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, citing Young as a major influence. So while Neil was in the studio making music with CSNY and Crazy Horse, what was he doing on stage? What else but touring the globe playing acoustic shows with support from Ben Keith and Frank Sampedro. This soundboard recording captures one of those concerts from June 14, 1989, 23 ago today, at the Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, NY. By the way, that venue has a stage built right out in the water, with all the seats having a fantastic view not only of the performers, but also of the Atlantic Ocean. Rolling Stones - 1978-06-14 - Capitol Theatre, NJ (SBD)

1970s - #1: The mid 1970s were not the best of years for "The Greatest Rock and Roll Band In The World". The Stones' albums during that period had not lived up to the standard set by 1972's Exile on Main Street. Drug problems plagued Keith. Mick seemed more interested in the party life (he was a regular at Studio 54) than rock and roll. Mick Taylor quit the band. As the punk scene took a leading role on rock's stage, many depicted The Rolling Stones as decadent, aging millionaires and criticized their music as stagnant and/or irrelevant. All that changed in 1978. The Stones stuck back at their critics with a vengeance, releasing Some Girls in June of that year. Some Girls, with songs such as Miss You, Beast of Burden, When The Whip Comes Down and Shattered, was easily the best Stones album since Exile, and ranks as one of the finest of their career. Concurrent with the album's release, the Stones launched a US tour, starting with dates at some small clubs, before launching into high gear in stadiums across the country. Night 3 of the tour, June 14, 1978, 34 years ago today, found the Stones at the legendary Capitol Theatre in Passaic NJ. Here's a soundboard recording from that historic show. 2000s - #2: In the wake of the original (and subsequent) breakups and reunions of Simon and Garfunkel, the former has established himself as a significant solo artist in his own right. Simon has also used his musical talents to support numerous social causes. He is a major benefactor and one of the co-founders, with Dr. Irwin Redlener, of the Children's Health Project and The Children's Health Fund. We’ve presented several benefit shows here at So Many Roads that Simon played in support of that endeavor. In addition, he has sponsored several projects to support musical education for children. Moreover, Simon has worked with Paul McCartney for the Adopt A Minefield charity, an organization which raises awareness about landmines and their dangers, and raises funds to clear minefields and help survivors of landmine accidents. On June 14, 2001, Simon joined McCartney for a benefit concert for the foundation in Beverly Hills, CA. The night before, June 13, 2013, 11 years ago today, Simon played a concert in Los Angeles, where Sir Paul stopped by to play a version of I’ve Just Seen A Face with Simon. It turned out to be a sort of dress rehearsal as that would be the tune they sang the next night to conclude the benefit show. Download this soundboard to hear 2 legendary Paul’s on stage, together.

Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood - 2009-06-13- Washington, DC (HQ Aud) 

2000s - #1: Few bands stayed together for less time, yet produced as lasting a legacy, as did Blind Faith. They recorded one album, which when released in August 1969, immediately went to #1 on the Billboard charts. They toured in support of the album that same month, the Blind Faith’s only live performances, except for their debut gig in Hyde Park in July we posted earlier this month. Since the group had less than an hour's worth of material, they also had to play tunes from Eric Clapton's days with Cream and Steve Winwood's time with Traffic. Eric was unhappy that the band seemed to be evolving into Cream, part 2, and by October, Blind Faith was no more. With the exception of 1973’s Rainbow Concert, Clapton and Winwood would not reunite for a live performance for almost 4 decades. Then, on May 19, 2007, about halfway through Winwood's set at the UK’s Country Side Rocks Festival, EC strolled on stage to recreate history. That night's collaboration was followed up by appearances together at Clapton's Crossroads festival in July 2007, 3 nights at Madison Square Garden in February 2008 and joint tours in 2009, 2010 & 2011. This HQ audience recording captures the duo during that 2009 tour, on July 13, 3 years ago today, Download this one and you'll see (and hear), that in rock, as in life, the more things change, the more they stay the same!

1960s - #2 -  On June 11, 1964, The Beatles arrived in Australia for their first and only tour in the land down under. They were without Ringo, however, who was hospitalized in London with tonsillitis. Jimmy Nichol filled in for Ringo on drums for the first few stops on the tour. On June 12, The Beatles made their way to Adelaide, where over 300,000 people lined the streets to watch the band make the drive to their hotel! That night, exactly 48 years ago today, John, Paul, George and Jimmy played 2 shows at Centennial Hall in Adelaide. The first was taped for an FM broadcast the next day. This bootleg captures that FM broadcast, a unique moment in time when only 3 of the original 4 Beatles were on stage together. But don't despair Ringo fans - the download also includes 6 tracks from the June 17 show in Melbourne, by which time Richard Starkey had rejoined his band mates. Get this one and capture the Fab Four at a moment when Beatlemania was at its peak!

1990s - #3 - In March 1996, Sting released his 5th solo album, entitled Mercury Falling. The 11 song disc (which was only 10 in the US and Canada as the track, Twenty Five to Midnight was not included for some inexplicable reason) is considered by many fans as a transitional album for Sting, moving his music away from jazz oriented rock to a more adult contemporary sound. Critics also did not regard it as highly as his earlier records, nor as well as they would rate its follow up, Brand New Day. Nevertheless, Sting launched a world tour in support of the album, which would take him to 4 continents in 16 months. This FM broadcast captures him on June 8, 1996, 16 years ago today, at the Fleadh Festival near London. While 4 songs from the show were not included in the broadcast, we make up for that with 4 bonus tunes from his appearance on VH-1 storytellers about a month later on July 15. Download this one and judge for yourself how well the Mercury Falling material stacks up to Sting's other work.

1990s - #3 - In April 1996, Mark Knopfler, formerly of Dire Straits, went on the road in support of his debut solo album, Golden Heart, which he released on March 26 of that year. The tour encompassed 84 concerts in 66 cities, all in Europe, including this show on June 8, 1996, 16 years ago today, in Hamburg. Knopfler had disbanded Dire Straits in 1995, and the band’s last tour had been in 1992. His set list included several Dire Straits classics, such as Sultans of Swing, Romeo & Juliet, Money For Nothing and Walk of Life, but his focus was his new solo material. In fact, as the years have passed, Knopfler’s solo tours have drawn less and less on his Dire Straits heritage. Download this soundboard recording to hear Knopfler as he takes his first steps as a solo artist.

Bob Dylan - 1988-06-07 - Concord, CA (SBD) 

1980s - #1: In May 1988, Bob Dylan released Down In The Groove, his 25th studio album. While the disc did not receive good reviews, nor sell particularly well, Dylan launched a summer tour in support of the album. When he took the stage on June 7, 1988, 24 years ago today in Concord, CA for the first show of that tour, fans immediately noticed a dramatic shift. Where in recent years, Dylan’s live shows often featured collaborations with high-profile artists such as Mick Taylor, the Grateful Dead, and Tom Petty, the 1988 tour centered around a small, 'garage rock'-type combo, consisting of guitarist G.E. Smith , bassist Kenny Aaronson, and drummer Christopher Parker. Influenced by his time with the Grateful Dead, Dylan’s set list became more adventurous during this tour, with song selection varying dramatically from show to show. He also began to incorporate more traditional cover songs into the set lists. For Dylan, this show would be the start of what is now known as the Never Ending Tour, which is 27 years and almost 2700 shows strong as of June 2015.
