1990s - #7: During the late 1980s, Bob Weir teamed up with bassist Rob Wasserman and the duo toured for seven years under names such as Weir/Wasserman and Scaring the Children. In 1994, Weir and Wasserman participated in the Woodstock '94 festival. Jay Lane was added on drums and Matthew Kelly on guitar and harmonica in 1995. They played their first show as a full band on April 22, 1995, billed as Friends of Montezuma and then as the RatDog Revue. They played their first show as RatDog on August 8, 1995 and would continue to play live shows well into the 21st century.  The soundboard recording captures Weir and Ratdog in Albany, on October 31, 1997, 27 years ago today.

1980s - #7: On July 7, 1986, after a show in Washington DC, Jerry Garcia lapsed into a near fatal diabetic coma, which lasted for 5 days. When he finally recovered, he needed to re-teach himself how to play guitar! Incredibly, Garcia was back on stage in October, performing several solo shows. This soundboard recording captures the soundcheck from the last of those concerts, in Oakland on October 31, 1986, 38 years ago today.

NOTE AS OF 11/01/2024 - thanks to a good friend of So Many Roads, Brett Alan, we now have a version with the tracks split.  New link to that version was put up this morning!

2020s - #6: In recent years, the Capitol Theater in Westchester has regained the prominence as a rock venue that it held way back in the early 1970s. The fabled theater, which in the 1970s hosted bands such as The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers, Hot Tuna, Leon Russell, James Taylor, Traffic, Van Morrison, Jefferson Airplane and Derek & The Dominos, eventually closed as a concert hall, then spent 40 years as a Broadway style theater and a catering hall. In 2012, however, the Capitol once again became a rock and roll venue. In doing so, it never forgot its jam band roots. The bar in the newly renovated Capitol is named Garcia's, in honor of the late great spiritual leader and lead guitarist of the Grateful Dead. And a new generation of jam bands have made the Capitol home, including Govt Mule,  the Tedeschi Trucks Band, and Phil Lesh & Friends.  Lesh and his assorted friends have played over 100 shows at the Capito, including spring runs in celebration on his birthday and fall residencies known as Phil-O-Ween! This webcast recording captures Phil on night 8 of his 9 show stand in fall 2022, on October 29, 2022, just 2 years ago today.  PS - when I selected this show to post about a month ago, I had no idea it would come just a few days after Phi's passing.  Lesh was undeniably one of the most innovative bass players in history, not to mention a man decicated to his family and charitable causes.  He will be sorely missed - may he rest in peace.

2010s - #7: In 2013, the Rolling Stones launched their 50 And Counting Tour to commemorate the band’s 50th anniversary. They clearly weren’t kidding about the “and counting part” as on February 21, 2014, just one year ago today, they launched the 14 on Fire tour in Abu Daabi. The tour would travel to Asia, Europe and Australia after the opening concert, encompassing a total of 28 additional shows before coming to a close in November. This IEM recording captures night 2 of the Australia leg of the tour, in Perth on October 29, 2014, a decade ago today.  Of note, the Stones get some help from former band mate Mick Taylor on 2 tunes.

2010s - #6: On October 29, 2014, a decade ago this very day, the Allman Brothers Band's 45 year run of live performances came to an end. That they chose the Beacon Theater for their final show was appropriate, given that the band had played almost 250 shows at the venue since 1989, with their spring residencies becoming the stuff of legends. This soundboard captures that historic final bow at the Beacon, the last night of 6 show run.

1990s - #6: After a brief 11 show East Coast tour in September 1990 that featured the debuts of Vince Welnick and Bruce Hornsby, as well as an incendiary 6 night run at Madison Square Garden in New York (the entire 9/16 show and parts of the 9/18, 9/19 and 9/20 shows have been officially released), the Dead headed across the pond in October for their last European tour. While the playing may not have been quite up the the MSG level, the tour still found the band in good form, especially in its latter stages. This soundboard recording captures The Dead in Paris on October 28, 1990, the day after a show that has been officially released and 34 years ago today.

Marshall Crenshaw - 2001-10-27 - Philadelphia PA (SBD)

2000s - #7: As long time readers of So Many Roads know, one of my favorite musicians is Marshall Crenshaw. Crenshaw is so under rated that he makes John Hiatt, whose lack of attention I have frequently mourned, look like Mr Popularity. Crenshaw was born in Detroit, MI but got his big break in New York, when he played John Lennon in the off Broadway production, Beatlemania. While in New York, he recorded Someday, Someway, a song that Robert Gordon covered and took to #76 on the Billboard charts in 1981. Crenshaw released his version the next year, which went to #36 in the charts, his only top 40 single. Crenshaw’s first 2 albums are must owns for every rock fan. Famed critic Robert Christgau summed those 2 discs up in one simple word - PERFECT. This soundboard recording captures Crenshaw in Philadelphia on October 27 2001, 23 years ago today.

- Opened for The Grateful Dead

1960s - #7:  On October 25, 1969, 55 years ago today when the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane were scheduled to play Winterland, one or more of the opening acts had to cancel. Stephen Stills and Graham Nash were at the venue as they were in San Francisco at the time recording the Deja Vu album with David Crosby and Neil Young, so they filled in, performing a short acoutic set as a duo, as captured in this soundboard recording  This show might be the only time just the 2 of them performed together, sans Crosby. The 2nd song of the night was Teach Your Children, which wouldn't be officially released until March 1970 when Deja Vu hit stores so this might be the first time the song was ever perfromed live. The set ends with Black Queen, a tune Stills had written in hope that the Grateful Dead would record it, though they never did.  When I saw Stills sit in with the Dead, however, in April 1983, they backed him oin that tune! Note - with a thanks to Albums That Should Exist for the original files.

1990s - #4: In 1999, after a long, 11 year separation, Bruce Springsteen, decided, to paraphrase the immortal words of John Belushi in The Blue Brothers, to put the band back together. The Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band reunion tour launched in April 1999 and stretched until July 2000. On highpoint of the tour was a record sold-out, 15-show run at Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey. Another was a 10-night, sold-out engagement at New York City's Madison Square Garden. At key points in each show, usually during Tenth Avenue Freezeout and his newest song, Land of Hope and Dreams, Springsteen played the role of preacher, calling on his disciples in the crowd to feel the healing power of the Ministry of Rock and Roll. Another special moment each night occurred during If I Should Fall Behind, a song written while Springsteen was away from the E Street band. With the band reunited, the song became a vow of togetherness, with Springsteen, wife Patti Scialfa, Steve Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, and The Big Man, Clarence Clemons each singing a verse, promising to wait for each other. It was clear that the Boss was glad to be back with his old comrades. This ALD Matrix recording captures Bruce & E-Streeters during the early stages of their reunion tour, on October 23, 1999, 25  years ago today, in Los Angeles.

In March, 1971, the Allmans played 2 shows that were recorded for what became one of rock's most legendary live albums, entitled simply At Fillmore East. So this soundboard recording finds the band on the rise to stardom. By the way, in addition to this concert, the Allman's played Stony Brook 3 other times that year on April 28, July 10 and July 26. Can you imagine 4 opportunities to see Duane, Greg and the entire Allman's contingent 4 times in 6 months at small college campus right outside New York City?

1980s - #6: Most artists, if they want to record a live album go on tour, record numerous shows, then compile the best tracks to release on record. Not Joe Jackson - he decided to do it the opposite way!  First, he played 6 shows in 3 nights in late January 1986 at the Roundabout Theater in New York City.  From those shows, he compiled the Big World album which was released on March and climbed to #34 on the Billboard charts. And then, he launched a world tour in support of Big World, that took him to Europe, North America, Australia, Asia and back to Europe!  This soundboard recording captures Joe during that tour, in Japan on October 21, 1986, 38 years ago today.

1980s - #4: After a short 5 show run in Europe in March 1981, done as favor to Pete Townshend of The Who, the Grateful Dead returned to Europe in Fall of that year for 13 shows in 7 countries between September 30 and October 19. The set lists showcased songs from their latest album, Go To Heaven, including Althea, Alabama Get Away, Far From Me, Feel Like a Stranger, Lost Sailor and Saint Of Circumstance. Generally, the band's playing is strong throughout the run, though some signs of the trouble that would plague the band in the mid 1980s are evident. Most noticeably, Jerry Garcia takes less of a leadership role in driving the band musically, hanging back at times and even having difficulty with some of the faster solos. Garcia's heroin use had begun to impact his personality and musical skills, and his band mates were growing weary of it. In fact, on the last night, in Barcelona, they presented Jerry with a letter, penned by Phil but signed by everyone in the band, expressing their dissatisfaction. The letter opened with “Dear Sir and Brother. You have been accused of certain high crimes and misdemeanors against the art of music. To wit: playing in your own band; never playing with any dynamics; never listening to what anyone else plays…” For band that tended to avoid any sort of confrontation, this was quite a large step, though it did not seem to have any lasting impact. In any event, this soundboard recording captures the band on that fateful night in Barcelona, on October 19, 1981, 43 years ago today.

2020s - #4: In the Spring of 2022, Sir Paul McCartney brought his Got Back tour to the United States, his first series of live concerts since the COVID pandemic.  The tour's title was both a play on words on the tune Get Back, and a declaration that he had returned, ready to continue to dazzle audiences around the world with his live performances. Then, in fall 2023, Sir Paul took the Got Back tour to Australia and South America. This excellent audience recording captures McCartney on night 1 in Australia, in Adelaide, on October 18, 2023, just a year ago today.  By the way, the highlight of every show of the Got Back tour was I Got A Feeling, where using clips from the recent Get Back TV special and an isolated vocal track from the 1969 Rooftop show, Sir Paul did a a virtual duet with John Lennon.

1980s - #3: After Rockpile broke up in the early 1980s, Nick Lowe embarked on a solo career. This FM broadcast captures Lowe on Oct 17, 1985, 39 years ago this very day in Boston. Billed as Nick Lowe and His Cowboy Outfit, this show also features Paul Carrack, of Ace and Squeeze fame, on the keyboards behind Nick. In fact, the set list includes Carrack’s two best known tunes, How Long and Tempted. Also, included is Shake and Pop, which is basically the same song as They Called It Rock, just with different lyrics for the chorus. Typical Nick Lowe, the master of satire! By the way, if you don’t own Lowe’s first album, Jesus of Cool, which was released in the U.S. as Pure Pop For Now People, then you’re missing one of the great pop albums of all time.

1970s - #5: In late 1973, when Chicago went into the studio to record their 7th album, the band initially intended to record a pure jazz record. During the sessions, however, some members of the band grew leery about the commercial risk of the endeavor. The group compromised, turning the project into a double album that incorporated jazz music along with some traditional rock tunes. The album, Chicago VII, was released on March 11, 1974 and went to the top of the Billboard charts. Three singles from the album, (I've Been) Searchin' So Long, Call On Me and Wishing You Were Here, all cracked the top 15 on the Billboard singles chart. This soundboard recording captures Chicago on tour in support of their double album in Louisville on October 17, 1974, a half century ago today. Download this one to remember when Chicago could still rock, thanks to the guitar work of the late Terry Kath.
